Pennsylvania’s craft beer scene is about to make traveling tastier. D.G. Yuengling & Son, known as America’s Oldest Brewery, is opening the Yuengling 1829 Bar & Grill at Harrisburg International Airport (HIA), bringing fresh pints and Pennsylvania pride to travelers.

A Landmark Opening for Yuengling at HIA

Harrisburg International Airport (HIA) recently announced the upcoming debut of the Yuengling 1829 Bar & Grill, slated to open by Labor Day. This exciting venture offers flyers and beer enthusiasts alike a unique opportunity to sample Yuengling’s storied brews and classic fare just steps from their gate. The new establishment will not only serve a full range of Yuengling’s celebrated beers on tap and in bottles but also pair them with a thoughtfully crafted bar and grill menu.

Why Yuengling Brewery Is a Craft Beer Icon

Historic Roots—America’s Oldest Brewery

Founded in 1829 by David G. Yuengling in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, Yuengling Brewery has long been synonymous with American brewing tradition. Remaining family-owned across six generations, the brewery expertly blends old-world craftsmanship with modern innovation.

Expanding Reach & Market Impact

Yuengling is not only the oldest operating brewery in the U.S., but also the country’s largest craft brewery by sales volume. Despite industry challenges and competition from macro-brewers, Yuengling’s approachable lagers and ales continue to win new fans, gaining market share even against national giants.

Signature Beers to Enjoy at the Airport

Visitors to the Yuengling 1829 Bar & Grill can expect to experience the brewery’s flagship pours, including:

  • Traditional Lager: A rich amber lager with roasted caramel malt and balanced hopping—synonymous with “lager” in much of Pennsylvania

  • Light Lager: Lower in calories, but full-flavored and crisp.

  • Black & Tan: A flavorful blend of 60% Dark Brewed Porter and 40% Premium Beer.

  • Golden Pilsner: A modern pilsner with a blend of Hallertau and Saaz hops.

  • FLIGHT: Yuengling’s low-cal, low-carb beer for modern palates.

  • Other classics like Lord Chesterfield Ale and Premium Pilsner round out the offerings

Experience & Amenities

Travelers can look forward to a destination that celebrates not only excellent beer, but also Pennsylvania’s hospitality:

  • Historical Beer Selection: Enjoy brews nearly two centuries in the making.

  • Locally-Inspired Cuisine: The menu is expected to showcase regional favorites and classic American fare.

  • Unique Environment: The bar and grill will be designed to immerse guests in Yuengling’s heritage.

  • Convenient for Flyers: Located inside HIA, making craft beer accessible to travelers from across the country

About Yuengling’s Legacy

Since its earliest days as Eagle Brewery in Pottsville, Yuengling has persevered through Prohibition, economic hardships, and intense market competition. Its ability to maintain consistency, quality, and independence has helped the brewery earn a loyal following and a prominent place in the American craft beer movement.

  • Production: Multiple facilities, including the original Pottsville site and a Tampa, Florida brewery.

  • Recognition: Frequently ranked as America’s largest craft brewer.

  • Family-Owned: Now under the leadership of Richard Yuengling Jr., the brewery continues to innovate while honoring tradition

Overview of Harrisburg International Airport (HIA)

Harrisburg International Airport (IATA: MDT) is the primary commercial airport serving South Central Pennsylvania and is located in Middletown, about nine miles southeast of Harrisburg. As the third-largest airport in the state, HIA is a convenient gateway for both business and leisure travelers, offering daily nonstop flights to 17 cities and a variety of one-stop routes connecting to destinations worldwide. The airport is served by major carriers including Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier, and United, ensuring accessibility to key U.S. hubs and beyond.

Facilities and Traveler Experience

HIA stands out for its traveler-friendly amenities and efficient layout. The terminal, completed in 2004, features 12 gates and a range of services such as free Wi-Fi, rocking chairs in the waiting area, an observation deck, a variety of dining and retail options, and rental car services on-site. The multi-modal transportation facility provides ample parking and easy access to ground transportation, including limos, taxis, hotel shuttles, and public transit. Clean, quiet facilities, short lines, and convenient highway access further contribute to a hassle-free airport experience, making HIA a preferred choice for residents and visitors in Central Pennsylvania.

Travelers passing through Harrisburg International Airport soon won’t just be catching flights—they’ll be toasting to Pennsylvania’s enduring beer legacy with a pint of Yuengling in hand. Whether you’re a craft beer aficionado or simply craving a taste of local flavor, the Yuengling 1829 Bar & Grill will be a must-visit destination on your journey.

A fresh hop-forward adventure is heading to Northampton County this July as Ranch City Brewing prepares to open its doors at the revitalized Simon Silk Mill complex. The brewery will be located at Simon Silk Mill, 1250 Simon Blvd., Easton.

Set to launch with a soft opening in the second week of July and a tentative grand opening on Saturday, July 12, Ranch City Brewing promises to be more than just another taproom—it’s aiming to be Easton’s newest destination for beer lovers and foodies alike.

Occupying the former home of Böser Geist Brewing Co., which closed in 2023 after a seven-year run, Ranch City Brewing is the brainchild of six passionate entrepreneurs: AJ and Nikki Mitchell, Dan and Daneal O’Leary, and Kyle and Cynthia Randell. Together, they’re bringing experience, energy, and community spirit to the table.

“We’re building the kind of brewery we’d want to hang out at ourselves,” said co-owner AJ Mitchell. “Whether you’re out with friends catching the game, or on a date night looking for quality food and drinks, we’ve got something for you.”

Craft Brews and Culinary Roots

At the heart of Ranch City’s beer program is Dan O’Leary, a seasoned brewer with over 15 years of experience, including stints at Blue Point Brewing, Port Jeff Brewing, and several Iron Hill Brewery locations. Dan will helm a 10-barrel brewhouse, producing a rotating lineup of styles from hoppy IPAs to rich stouts, balanced lagers, and even hard seltzers.

Expect 24 taps pouring everything from house flagships to seasonal specialties and guest beers. Highlights include:

  • Quiet Man – a silky nitro Irish dry stout

  • Soft Saddle – a crisp cream ale

  • Schitzen Giggles – a playful German pilsner

In addition to beer, Ranch City will serve local wine, craft cocktails, and a curated bourbon selection with an emphasis on Pennsylvania distilleries.

Elevated Pub Grub

Food is no afterthought here. With a chef who’s sharpened his knives in New York’s Little Italy for over two decades, Ranch City will serve an inspired menu that includes:

  • Artisan pizzas (personal and sharable)

  • Smash burgers on fresh-baked rolls

  • Cheesesteaks, chicken wings, hush puppies, bacon-wrapped shrimp

  • Twisted Tees favorites like loaded potato scoops and the “Dirty Dog” chili-cheese hot dog

As AJ puts it, “It’s all about high-quality, made-to-order food that pairs perfectly with beer.”

A Space That Blends City and Country

The renovated interior stays true to its industrial roots while weaving in rustic-modern elements—think exposed brick, corrugated metal, graffiti murals, and pendant lights hanging from rope. With seating for around 150 patrons, the vibe strikes a balance between casual comfort and visual flair.

The name Ranch City reflects the team’s diverse backgrounds—some from cityscapes, others from rural and suburban roots—and speaks to the inclusive atmosphere they’re cultivating. As co-owner Nikki Mitchell explains: “We wanted a place where everyone feels at home.”

A New Chapter at the Silk Mill

Ranch City Brewing joins a growing community at Easton’s Simon Silk Mill, which already includes local hotspots like:

  • Seven Sirens’ The Blendery

  • Easton Wine Project

  • The Tipsy Crow

  • Owowcow Creamery

  • Spectracolor Coffee Roasters

With bold brews, inventive food, and a welcoming ambiance, Ranch City Brewing is set to become a key player in the Lehigh Valley beer scene.

Grist House Craft Brewery of Millvale is bringing its signature brews to Butler County with a brand-new taproom at Saxonburg’s beloved Sprankle’s Neighborhood Market on West Water Street. This exciting expansion officially opens its doors on Saturday, February 15, 2025, marking Grist House’s third dynamic location in the region. In a one-of-a-kind partnership, Grist House is teaming up with Pocha by Kye‑Won, a Korean-style eatery known for its authentic comfort food. Diners can expect a mouth-watering fusion of hearty Korean dishes and Grist House’s expertly crafted beers—served in a cozy indoor taproom or the heated patio outside.

The origins of this collaboration trace back to a successful 2023 pop-up event at Sprankle’s, which inspired both parties to seal the deal. Marketing manager Christie Massari explained, “Our pop‑up was so well‑received, we decided to make it permanent”. The new space includes an eight-seat bar, a dedicated keg storage room, and newly installed restrooms—renovations courtesy of the Sprankle family.

How to Start a Brewery Without Upfront Capital: 4 Proven Strategies for Success https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/10/02/how-to-start-a-brewery-without-upfront-capital-4-proven-strategies-for-success/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-to-start-a-brewery-without-upfront-capital-4-proven-strategies-for-success Wed, 02 Oct 2024 17:13:45 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15595 How to Start a Brewery Without Upfront Capital: 4 Proven Strategies for Success

Starting a brewery is a dream for many passionate brewers, but for those without substantial startup funds, it might feel like a long shot. The good news? You don’t need to have deep pockets to turn your brewery dreams into reality. Here are four practical ways to launch a brewery even if you don’t have upfront capital.

The brewhouse from a large production brewhouse in Tampa, Florida.

1. Crowdfunding: Turn Your Brewing Dream into a Community Movement

The rise of crowdfunding has opened doors for entrepreneurs across industries, including craft beer. Platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo give you the opportunity to pitch your brewery concept to backers who are excited about supporting the next big thing in beer.

How It Works: Crowdfunding isn’t just about asking for donations. Offer enticing rewards such as early access to your brews, limited-edition merchandise, or VIP experiences at your brewery. This gives backers a reason to support you while validating whether there’s real interest in your brewing concept.

By tapping into crowdfunding, you’re not just raising money—you’re also building a community of early supporters who are invested in your success. A well-executed campaign can bring in significant startup capital while generating buzz around your brand.

2. Angel Investors: Partner with Investors Seeking Craft Beer Gold

If crowdfunding feels too unpredictable, consider pitching your brewery concept to angel investors. These individuals are often on the lookout for promising ventures, and a unique craft brewery might just pique their interest.

Why It Works: Angel investors provide capital in exchange for equity, but you’ll need to present a solid business plan to secure their support. Craft a compelling pitch that showcases your expertise, market research, and the potential profitability of your brewery. Highlight how your brewing skills, innovative recipes, and dedication to quality will set your brewery apart from the competition.

Angel investors aren’t just financial backers—they can become valuable partners, offering business advice and industry connections that help your brewery thrive.

3. Business Partnerships: Share the Load and Double Your Chances of Success

Another route to funding your brewery is finding a business partner. Whether it’s a friend, colleague, or someone you meet at industry events, a partner who brings financial backing to the table can accelerate your journey to opening a brewery.

How It Works: A business partner typically provides capital in exchange for partial ownership. The key is to find someone whose skills complement yours. If you’re the brewing expert, look for a partner with a strong background in finance, operations, or marketing. By combining forces, you’ll share the workload, spread the risk, and have someone to collaborate with on key decisions.

Just ensure that you and your partner are aligned in your vision for the brewery and share a commitment to its success.

4. Grants: Secure Free Funding from Federal and State Programs

For those who believe “free money” doesn’t exist, grants might be the exception. There are grants available from government programs and private organizations that support small businesses, particularly those in specific industries like brewing.

Where to Look: Federal programs like the USDA Rural Business Development Grants and state-level grants often support new local businesses. While the application process can be daunting, securing a grant is a fantastic way to cover startup costs without taking on debt or giving up equity.

If you’re serious about getting a grant, be prepared to dive into the paperwork. Detail your business model, explain your brewery’s potential impact, and outline how the grant will help your business grow. Persistence pays off, and winning a grant can be a game changer for your brewery.

Bonus Tips: Master the Basics for Brewery Success

Launching a brewery takes more than just capital. Keep these crucial tips in mind to ensure your brewery’s long-term success:

  • Sharpen Your Business Skills: If your strengths lie in brewing, consider partnering with or hiring someone who excels in finance and business management. Running a brewery requires solid financial acumen.
  • Perfect Your Brewing Craft: Before launching, make sure your brewing process is consistent. Quality and consistency will earn you repeat customers.
  • Choose the Right Location: Whether opening a taproom or focusing on distribution, your location matters. Find a spot with high demand for craft beer and easy access for customers.
  • Invest in Quality Equipment: Good beer starts with good tools. Don’t cut corners on essential brewing equipment—reliable gear is key to producing great beer consistently.
  • Stay Licensed and Legal: Brewery regulations are strict. Ensure you have all the necessary permits to operate legally and avoid costly penalties.
  • Build a Strong Brand: From your logo to your packaging, your brand should reflect your brewery’s personality and story. Great branding will set you apart in the competitive craft beer market.

Final Thoughts: From Vision to Reality—How to Launch a Brewery Without Capital

Starting a brewery without upfront capital isn’t just a pipe dream. With creative funding solutions like crowdfunding, angel investors, business partnerships, and grants, you can turn your passion for brewing into a thriving business. Combine these financial strategies with a solid plan, sharp business skills, and a commitment to quality brewing, and you’re well on your way to launching a successful brewery.

Remember, perseverance is key. Every step you take—whether it’s crafting the perfect business plan or nailing down your first batch of beer—brings you closer to turning your brewery dream into reality. Cheers to your success!

Key Takeaways: How to Start a Brewery Without Upfront Capital

  • Crowdfunding: Engage backers with exciting rewards.
  • Angel Investors: Attract investors with a winning pitch.
  • Business Partnerships: Partner with someone who complements your skills.
  • Grants: Apply for free funding to kickstart your brewery.

We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

How to Start a Brewery: Essential Tips for Beer Enthusiasts https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/10/01/how-to-start-a-brewery-essential-tips-for-beer-enthusiasts/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-to-start-a-brewery-essential-tips-for-beer-enthusiasts Tue, 01 Oct 2024 16:28:41 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15590 How to Start a Brewery: Essential Tips for Beer Enthusiasts

Dreaming of opening your own brewery? It’s a thrilling venture, but there’s more to it than crafting great beer. From planning and legalities to branding and marketing, launching a brewery requires dedication and insight. Here’s your comprehensive guide to starting a successful brewery.

1. Research & Planning: Building a Strong Foundation

Understanding the Craft Beer Market

Before diving into the brewing business, it’s crucial to research the local market. Identify potential competitors, analyze trends, and understand your target audience. Knowing the preferences of craft beer lovers in your area helps tailor your brewery’s offerings and sets you apart in a crowded market.

Developing a Business Plan

Your business plan serves as your blueprint. It should cover business goals, target audience, marketing strategies, operational structure, and financial forecasts. A solid business plan not only guides your brewery’s growth but also attracts investors and helps secure necessary funding.

2. Legal & Regulatory Requirements: Navigating the Paperwork

Securing Licenses and Permits

Starting a brewery requires several licenses and permits. These include brewing licenses, health and safety permits, and often environmental clearances. Contact local regulatory bodies to ensure full compliance and prevent legal headaches down the line.

Understanding Tax Responsibilities

Breweries face a unique tax landscape, particularly regarding excise taxes on alcohol production. Partnering with a tax professional who specializes in the brewing industry will help you navigate the intricacies of brewery taxes and avoid costly mistakes.

3. Choosing Location & Equipment: Setting Up for Success

Finding the Ideal Brewery Location

The success of your brewery can heavily depend on its location. Look for spots with high foot traffic, easy access for customers and suppliers, and enough space for expansion. Proximity to local attractions or being part of a beer trail can also drive customer visits.

Investing in Quality Brewing Equipment

Quality brewing equipment is non-negotiable. Whether it’s fermenters, kegs, bottling lines, or refrigeration units, investing in reliable gear ensures product consistency and smooth operations. Also, consider essential office equipment, such as accounting software and customer management tools, to keep your brewery running efficiently.

4. Recipe Development & Production: Crafting Unique Brews

Experimenting and Innovating

To stand out in the craft beer market, you need to offer something unique. Experiment with ingredients and brewing techniques to create signature beers that set your brewery apart. Pushing the boundaries with new flavors or seasonal specialties can keep customers intrigued and coming back.

Maintaining Consistency in Your Beers

Once you’ve developed standout recipes, consistency is key. Customers want to experience the same great taste with every batch. Implement strict quality control measures and use consistent brewing techniques to ensure uniformity.

5. Branding & Marketing: Building Your Brewery’s Identity

Creating a Strong Brewery Brand

Your brand is much more than a name or logo; it’s the core identity of your brewery. Craft a compelling brand story that resonates with your target audience. Your brewery’s values, design, and packaging should all reflect this identity to build a loyal customer base.

Leveraging Social Media for Brewery Marketing

Social media marketing is one of the most cost-effective ways to promote your brewery. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook offer the perfect venue to showcase your products, connect with customers, and share behind-the-scenes content. Engage your audience with regular posts and promotions to build a strong online presence.

Participating in Local Events

Engaging with the local community can be a powerful way to promote your brewery. Attend beer festivals, farmers markets, or community events to get your brews in front of potential customers. Offering brewery tours and tastings at your facility can also foster stronger connections with your audience.

6. Financial Management: Ensuring Long-Term Success

Securing Startup Funding

Starting a brewery is capital-intensive. Explore various funding options, including bank loans, personal savings, investor backing, or crowdfunding campaigns. Make sure you have a clear understanding of your financial requirements and cash flow to cover both startup and operational expenses.

Monitoring Brewery Finances

Once your brewery is up and running, effective financial management is crucial. Keep close tabs on expenses, sales, and profits. Regular financial reviews and a dedicated accountant can help you stay profitable and avoid financial pitfalls.

7. Staffing & Operations: Building a Skilled Team

Hiring Passionate, Skilled Staff

Your brewery staff will be the backbone of your operation. Hire skilled and enthusiastic individuals, from brewers to marketing professionals, who share your vision and passion. Offering continuous training and development can help retain top talent and improve overall operations.

Streamlining Operations for Efficiency

Efficient brewery operations are essential for keeping up with demand and maintaining quality. Implement systems to streamline production, manage inventory, and optimize distribution. Regularly review your processes and make necessary adjustments to keep costs down and production flowing smoothly.

8. Customer Engagement & Feedback: Building Loyalty

Building Strong Customer Relationships

Engaging with your customers is key to long-term success. Design loyalty programs and offer personalized experiences to make customers feel valued. Actively seek out customer feedback and use it to improve your products and services.

Offering Brewery Tours and Tastings

Brewery tours and tastings are a great way to showcase your brewing process and give customers a more personal connection to your brand. A well-curated tour or tasting experience can turn one-time visitors into regular customers.

9. Sustainability Practices: Brewing with the Environment in Mind

Embracing Sustainable Practices

Sustainability is a growing concern for consumers. Implement eco-friendly initiatives in your brewery, such as recycling, energy-efficient brewing systems, and locally sourced ingredients. Not only does this appeal to eco-conscious customers, but it can also reduce your operational costs over time.

Communicating Your Sustainability Efforts

Promoting your sustainable brewing practices can boost your brand image. Highlight your eco-friendly initiatives on your website, packaging, and social media to appeal to environmentally conscious beer enthusiasts.

10. Continuous Learning: Staying Ahead in the Brewing Industry

Staying Updated with Industry Trends

The brewing industry evolves rapidly, with new techniques, styles, and trends emerging regularly. Stay updated by attending industry conferences, joining associations, and participating in online brewing communities.

Seeking Feedback and Improving

Finally, be open to continuous improvement. Regularly gather feedback from customers, staff, and industry experts to fine-tune your processes and adapt to new challenges. Continuous learning and flexibility are essential for long-term success.

Conclusion: Turning Your Brewery Dream into Reality

Starting a brewery can be a rewarding adventure, but success requires strategic planning, dedication, and a passion for brewing. By following these essential tips—researching your market, creating unique brews, engaging your audience, and managing finances efficiently—you’ll be well on your way to establishing a successful brewery. Cheers to your brewing journey!

Rubber Soul Brewing to Open New Taproom Saturday https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/06/21/rubber-soul-brewing-to-open-new-taproom-saturday/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rubber-soul-brewing-to-open-new-taproom-saturday Fri, 21 Jun 2024 15:18:30 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15185

Rubber Soul Brewing to Open New Taproom Saturday

This Saturday – June 22nd, 2024, Rubber Soul Brewing is set to open their brand new taproom on North Hanover Street, in Hummelstown PA.

After quite a while building the brand new building (and not without some town controversy) the opening is right around the corner. The new taproom will also host their brewery in the lower level (visible from the giant parking lot). Their original location will now just be a full restaurant and taproom. (See: A Sneak Peek at Rubber Soul Brewery.)

Original Location

Rubber Soul Brewing was originally intending to open their first location in Hummelstown around March of 2020, but with the pandemic, things got pushed back, and they finally held their grand opening in October of 2020. Their current location is in the old Hummelstown Police and Borough Building, located at 136 S Hanover St, Hummelstown, PA 17036.

The current plan for the original location is that they have removed the brewing production from the location to their new brewery facility and taproom, and extending the seating and restaurant.

New Location

Rubber Soul Brewing’s New Taproom Interior (photo courtesy of Rubber Soul Brewing)

The new location is located at 17 N Hanover St, Hummelstown, PA 17036, just 0.3 miles north of their current taproom (on the same street). The new facility took over an old warehouse that formerly sat on the property, as well as Maritza’s House of Style, which they had removed for extra parking. The new taproom has their brewing facility on the lower level, and the upper level features a deck and patio area that faces the 7-11 across the street and some abandoned buildings / businesses.

Hummelstown is currently in the midst of a big tourism push, including the mayor, the governor, and other officials and board members (some of which are involved with Rubber Soul Brewing). At a town meeting where they got permission to bulldoze the Maritza House of Style (despite having full ownership technically as per law at the time), Rubber Soul Brewing stated that their parking lot would be usable by the public for events in town including the parades, carnivals, as well as parking for other Main Street square activities (2nd Friday’s, Memorial Day, etc.)

A quick map from their current location to their new location: From Rubber Soul Brewery to Rubber Soul Brewing Company’s New Taproom. Their current location is still not listed on Google Maps. The old warehouse which was removed was listed as 17 North Hanover Street. As per their Facebook post their brewery’s address will be “21 North Hanover Street”.
Rubber Soul Brewing Company was originally a brewery located in Salisbury Maryland. They were bought and are now owned by Ghost Brewing LLC. They were bought whole-stock, meaning the equipment, recipes, and social media passcodes and usage were all part of their purchase.

More Information on Rubber Soul

The following comes via Untappd.

They are listed as a brew pub from Hummelstown, PA. They have 123 unique beers and over 51,000 ratings, with a global average rating of 3.77 (as of 6.21.24). Their Untappd description reads: “We are pumping the air back into the tires of Rubber Soul Brewing Company. New location, new owners, new (and familiar) beer…same old sOul! In this world of instant gratification, superficial “likes” and followers instead of friends, we think it’s more important than ever to find your sOul. See, more and more often, people are so focused on doing what’s ‘right’ by someone else’s standards, obsessed with how other view them that they forget who they are. They give and give and give, follow all of the rules and do all of the ‘right’ things, until one day they wake up and realize their empty. Spend 5 minutes on social media and you will see countless bright pictures of smiling faces, but how many of us are genuinely satisfied? We’re talking deep, within your sOul, fire blazing, satisfied. At Rubber Soul, our mission is to refuel each and every sOul that walks through our doors. Our craft beer and local vibe is the end result of people who decided to just go for it and follow their passion, regardless of the opinion of others. We look forward to welcoming you to our brewery. No judgements. No impossible standards. #NoFilter. All that we require is that you do a little sOul searching.
