Stealing and Dealing Your Beer
by: Paul R. Kan

Fontana Police’s capture of a recent beer heist

Without knowing it, you may have been drinking a stolen beer at your last happy hour. Organized rings of beer thieves across the United States have been taking thousands of gallons of beer from trains, breweries and delivery trucks. Rather than Robin Hoods—stealing beer from the rich to give to the thirsty—these criminals sell the looted beer to bars and restaurants.

Beer heists are more than shoplifting a couple of six packs from the local liquor store.

But it was a ring of beer thieves busted last spring in the Northeast United States that perpetrated the widest ranging number of beer heists. For at least two years, the “Beer Theft Enterprise” stole hundreds of thousands of dollars of Corona and Modelo across four states. Often armed with guns, the group cut through fences, broke locks and hauled out beer from railyards and warehouses under the cover of night. According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s announcement of the gang’s indictment —and without realizing the pun—the criminal group had “left several beverage distribution and railroad companies ailing.”

How does looted beer get from railyard to bar? Understanding how beer makes its way to the black market—and potentially to your glass—it’s important to first learn why beer is targeted for heists.

The Felony in the Fridge

In many ways, beer is not an ideal product for a criminal gang to steal and deal. Unlike narcotics, criminals aren’t producing their own beer and selling it directly to consumers. Nor do they partner with illegal producers seeking to move their beer on the street. Beer thieves, instead, must rob businesses to procure the product. Breaking into a business heightens the risks of being caught, arrested and imprisoned. Not only do thieves have to burgle a location where beer is kept, but to be profitable, they have to take a lot of it. This makes clandestinely transporting and storing large quantities complicated.

Complicated, but not impossible. Despite the downsides, beer is an attractive target for organized thieves. Criminal gangs know there’s a demand among bar and restaurant owners for cut-rate beer. Criminals also know that stolen beer easily blends-in with the legitimately purchased stock. Glancing in a walk-in refrigerator, the difference between legally and illegally acquired beer inventory is nearly indistinguishable. The ease of concealing stolen beer is tempting enough for some business owners to risk paying criminals for some. All of this makes beer, unlike some goods from other robberies, easier for criminals to offload. No visits to shady pawnshops required.

Getting caught stealing and dealing beer also have lower legal penalties than trafficking illegal products like hard drugs. Police and prosecutors are often more focused on crimes that directly, and more severely, harm public safety. After all, it’s not cocaine; it’s just beer.

The relative ease of selling stolen beer, the lower criminal penalties and the potential of a high payoff can be seductive reasons for individuals to join a heist. In fact, the ringleader of the Beer Theft Enterprise openly recruited on Instagram for help with his robberies by promising lucrative paydays. One post read that participants “in the beer train method” would be guaranteed “100k+ in a month.” Another post included a picture of a railroad with the caption “Need workers who want to make [money bag emoji]” with a “Yes” or “No” vote button.

How many people hit the “yes” button for a heist isn’t publicly known. But the brazen recruitment on Instagram reveals how manpower is essential for a beer heist. Lookouts, drivers, and people with the ability to operate heavy machinery like forklifts are usually needed for a large-scale beer robbery. Someone willing to threaten or use violence to gain access to the targeted beer may also be included. A member of the Beer Theft Enterprise threatened railyard and warehouse employees at gunpoint for entry into railcars and warehouses.

To avoid the possibility of violence, criminal rings can include an employee where beer is stored to leave a door unlocked or an alarm unarmed. This insider may also be able to pre-position beer for accomplices to load more quickly. For example, an insider was intimately involved with the beer distribution warehouse robbery in Austin, Texas. On an agreed upon date and time, he moved cases of selected beers closer to the loading dock for easier removal by the beer thieves.

After the gang accesses the beer, it’s loaded in vehicles for transport to another location. There, the criminal gang inspects the beer for any damage. Broken bottles, burst cans or cracked kegs are worthless on the black market.

For the gang, selling the undamaged beer is the next step. In one instance, the Beer Theft Enterprise sold its looted beer to a middleman…and a middlewoman. According to a West Haven Police arrest warrant, one of the ring’s members admitted that after a heist the group unloaded “the stolen beer at a garage in the Bronx next to a bodega, where the receiver was ‘a Russian guy and a young girl.’” The pair paid the thieves in cash for the beer, which was likely destined for bars, restaurants and stores around New York City.

Over a Barrel

The beer industry is uniquely vulnerable to large-scale thefts by criminal rings. America’s three-tier liquor distribution system almost invites beer heists. Put in place after Prohibition, the system is comprised of producers who make alcohol to sell to distributors in the middle who collect alcohol tax when selling to retailers. The first and second tiers create the black market for criminals—by taking beer, criminals remove the costs of tax for retailers while pocketing the money for themselves.

The result is millions of dollars in lost revenue for brewers, distributors and communities. Because of their economic damage, these crimes deserve to be a higher priority for law enforcement. But it’s unknown how often beer heists occur. Neither the U.S. Department of Justice nor beer industry groups keep statistics on large-scale beer thefts. Beyond media reporting, there is little information about these crimes. This dearth of information is part of the
problem. Without knowing the scope and scale of this type of criminal activity, prioritization won’t happen, and effective solutions will be wanting.

Without a more comprehensive examination of beer heists along with serious efforts to combat them, your happy hour beer will always be a little suspicious….

Twelve78 Brewing Company To Open Its Doors on May 17th In Phoenixville

Phoenixville is set to expand its brewing scene with the opening of Twelve78 Brewing Company located at 35 Bridge Street. This new establishment is owned by Steve and Kara Rogacki, who are residents of Phoenixville and are preparing to open their doors on May 17th, 2024.

Twelve78 Brewing Company has already made waves in the local beer community, earning high praise at the inaugural Pennsylvania Homebrew Invitational. The brewery started its journey about three years ago, achieving notable success at various beer festivals. The operation is spearheaded by Steve and his wife, Kara, who have been married for nearly 24 years and are parents to two sons, Jake and Aidan. Both sons have played a role in the establishment of the brewery and taproom.

The brewery plans to merge traditional beer styles with innovative brewing techniques, producing Thiolized Lagers, Pale Ales, and IPAs. Particularly popular is their Sour Smoothie Ale line, which features sour ales mixed with a variety of fruit purees, ice cream, marshmallows, and more. Twelve78’s operations are based around a 3-vessel 3.5 BBL brewhouse complemented by both 3.5 and 7BBL fermenters.

Visitors will be able to enjoy these creations from 16 taps located in a 5,000-square-foot space that includes three large roll-up doors, aiming to bring the outdoors inside regardless of the weather. While there won’t be an in-house kitchen, a permanent food truck will be stationed on the premises. Additionally, Twelve78 will offer an assortment of 4-packs for takeaway, including mixed options. Planned events include Bingo nights on Tuesdays and Trivia on Thursdays.

Steve’s brewing passion began almost three decades ago in college, where his advanced Chemistry class included a segment on brewing for students over 21. He brewed his first batch in the early 90s and, despite medical restrictions that prevent him from drinking, continued to find satisfaction in the enjoyment his brews brought to others. For Steve, brewing is both a passion and an art form.

We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

A map of all the breweries we visited in 2023 for the first time.

This is a map of all the “new to us” breweries we visited in 2023. And by this I mean the physical locations. (So some of these will be breweries I’ve been to before, but a new location of theirs, like the Spring House Tavern.)

This list is Ben’s first time visits (mostly visited with Amy, and then later Scarlet).

How to Use The Map

You can zoom in, and click on each of the beer mugs with the paw prints on them to see the breweries. This will call up their address via Google Maps, as well as any other information they have supplied to Google (phone numbers, websites, etc.). You can also save this map to your Google Maps so when you call up Google Maps these locations will be pinned onto your map as an overlay.

Maps of Breweries in the United States of America (USA)

The below is a list of maps of the states, territories, and districts of the United States. As well as a fun map of all the breweries that The Beer Thrillers have been to. I am working on getting these done geographically, starting with Maine. (When the state is underlined and in color, means the map is done and ready to be viewed.)

Craft beer has been on the rise in recent years, with more and more people turning away from mass-produced, commercial beers in favor of unique, artisanal brews. As a result, craft breweries have been popping up all over the country, each with their own unique take on beer. One such brewery is Beer Drop, a craft beer subscription service that delivers top-notch, small-batch beers straight to your doorstep.

Beer Drop is a unique concept in the craft beer world. Unlike traditional breweries that sell their beers in stores or bars, Beer Drop is a subscription service that brings the beer to you. Each month, subscribers receive a curated selection of four different beers from different breweries across the country. The beers are carefully selected by Beer Drop’s team of experts, who are passionate about bringing the best and most unique craft beers to their subscribers.

The selection of beers available through Beer Drop is truly impressive. Each month’s selection includes a variety of styles, from IPAs to stouts to sours and everything in between. What sets Beer Drop apart from other beer subscription services is the quality of the beers they offer. They work directly with small, independent breweries to source the best and most interesting beers, often featuring limited-release brews that you won’t find anywhere else.

One of the best things about Beer Drop is the flexibility it offers. Subscribers can choose from different subscription plans to fit their budget and drinking preferences. Options include monthly or bi-monthly deliveries, as well as a “hoppy-only” plan for those who love IPAs and other hop-forward beers. Additionally, subscribers can pause or cancel their subscription at any time, giving them complete control over their deliveries.

But Beer Drop is more than just a subscription service. They also offer a range of beer-related merchandise, including glasses, shirts, and bottle openers. They even have a “Beer School” section of their website, which provides information on beer styles, brewing techniques, and more.

Overall, Beer Drop is a fantastic option for anyone who loves craft beer. With their carefully curated selection of high-quality, small-batch beers, flexible subscription plans, and range of beer-related merchandise, they offer a truly unique and enjoyable experience for beer lovers across the country.

Savor the Flavor: Why Beer Drop Should Be Your Go-To Craft Beer Subscription Service

Beers that Beer Drop has Offered in the Past

More

than just a subscription service, Beer Drop is also committed to supporting independent breweries and helping to grow the craft beer industry. They work directly with small, family-owned breweries to help them reach a wider audience and connect with beer enthusiasts all over the country. By doing so, Beer Drop is helping to support the local economies where these breweries are based and promoting the unique flavors and styles that can be found in craft beer.

In addition to their commitment to supporting independent breweries, Beer Drop is also dedicated to sustainability. They use recycled and biodegradable materials in their packaging, and they work with breweries that prioritize sustainable brewing practices. By doing so, they are helping to reduce waste and minimize the environmental impact of the craft beer industry.

Finally, Beer Drop offers a fantastic experience for those who are looking to expand their knowledge of craft beer. Their team of experts provides tasting notes and information about each beer in the monthly selection, helping subscribers to learn more about different beer styles and flavors. This makes Beer Drop a great option for both seasoned craft beer drinkers and those who are new to the scene.

Overall, Beer Drop is a standout in the world of craft beer subscription services. Discovering the Best Independent Breweries with Beer Drop Craft Beer Subscription Service

Beer Drop

One of the great things about Beer Drop is that they are always introducing new and exciting breweries and beers to their subscribers. Each month’s selection features a different lineup of breweries, ensuring that there is always something new and interesting to try. This is a great way for beer lovers to discover new breweries and expand their palate beyond what they might find at their local liquor store or bar.

Another benefit of Beer Drop is the convenience it offers. Rather than having to visit multiple breweries or liquor stores to find unique and high-quality craft beers, subscribers can have them delivered right to their doorstep. This is especially helpful for those who live in areas where craft beer options may be limited, as it allows them to experience a wide range of flavors and styles without having to travel.

Finally, Beer Drop is a great way to support the craft beer industry as a whole. By subscribing to Beer Drop, you are not only supporting independent breweries, but you are also helping to promote the idea that craft beer is worth seeking out and enjoying. This is important in a world where mass-produced, commercial beers dominate the market and independent breweries often struggle to gain a foothold.

Embracing Craft Beer Culture: A Journey of Taste and Tradition

Craft beer culture is more than just a pastime; it’s a way of life that brings people together to celebrate the art and tradition of brewing. Craft beer enthusiasts are not just consumers; they are part of a vibrant community that thrives on exploration, innovation, and camaraderie. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the world of craft beer culture, exploring its history, values, and the experiences it offers to those who are drawn to it.

A Brief History of Craft Beer Culture

Craft beer culture can trace its roots back to the late 20th century when a few passionate individuals challenged the dominance of big breweries by producing small batches of unique, high-quality beer. This movement emphasized creativity, quality, and traditional brewing methods. As craft breweries sprang up across the United States and around the world, a unique subculture emerged. Today, the craft beer community continues to grow, fueled by a shared appreciation for artisanal beer.

Craft Beer

Key Values of Craft Beer Culture’

  1. Independence: Craft beer culture values independence from corporate influence. Craft breweries are typically small, independently owned, and free from the pressures of mass production.
  2. Quality over Quantity: Craft beer enthusiasts prioritize quality and flavor over mass production and low cost. This focus on quality leads to an astonishing diversity of beer styles and flavors.
  3. Innovation: Innovation is at the heart of craft beer culture. Brewers constantly experiment with ingredients, techniques, and styles, pushing the boundaries of what beer can be.
  4. Local Focus: Many craft beer aficionados support their local breweries, fostering a strong connection between the brewery and its community.
  5. Education: Craft beer culture encourages learning and exploration. Enthusiasts often seek to expand their knowledge of beer styles, brewing techniques, and the history of beer.

Experiences Within Craft Beer Culture

  1. Visiting Breweries: One of the most enjoyable aspects of craft beer culture is visiting local breweries. This allows enthusiasts to connect with the brewers, see the brewing process firsthand, and sample fresh, unique beers that can’t be found in stores.
  2. Beer Tastings and Pairings: Tasting events and beer pairings are a great way to explore different styles and discover how beer complements various foods.
  3. Homebrewing: Many craft beer enthusiasts take their passion a step further by trying their hand at homebrewing. This hands-on experience deepens their appreciation for the craft.
  4. Community Engagement: Craft beer culture fosters a sense of community. Beer enthusiasts often join clubs, attend festivals, and participate in charity events, strengthening their bonds with fellow enthusiasts.
  5. Education and Appreciation: Beer appreciation classes, books, and online resources are readily available for those eager to expand their knowledge of craft beer.

Craft Beer is Culture

Craft beer culture is a celebration of craftsmanship, tradition, and camaraderie. It’s a culture that values independence, quality, innovation, and education. For those who embrace it, craft beer is more than just a drink; it’s a gateway to a world of diverse flavors and rich experiences.

As you embark on your craft beer journey, remember that it’s a culture built on inclusivity and a shared love for the art of brewing. Whether you’re enjoying a pint at your local brewery or exploring new flavors in your own home, you’re part of a community that revels in the simple pleasure of a well-crafted beer. So, raise your glass to the craft beer culture and savor every sip of its rich heritage and ever-evolving future.

Now obviously, this is a list, and should be taken at just face value. Its just a list. This is in no way all encompassing nor does it strive to be the absolute most thorough. This is an example of some of the larger, more well known, and more liked breweries across the United States.

I hope you enjoy the list for what it is. A talking and discussion starting off point, especially for newer people to the craft beer scene.

Craft Beer

The craft brewing industry in the United States is booming. In 2022, craft brewers produced 24.8 million barrels of beer, representing 13.1% of the overall beer market. This growth is being driven by a number of factors, including the increasing popularity of craft beer among consumers, the growing number of craft breweries, and the increasing availability of craft beer in stores and restaurants.

With so many great craft breweries to choose from, it can be tough to know where to start. Here are a few of the best craft breweries in the United States.

Map of New Breweries We Visited in 2022 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/01/01/map-of-new-breweries-we-visited-in-2022/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=map-of-new-breweries-we-visited-in-2022 Sun, 01 Jan 2023 19:06:55 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15354

A map of the breweries we visited for the first time in 2022

Map of New Breweries We Visited in 2022

This is a map of all the “new to us” breweries we visited in 2022. And by this I mean the physical locations. I’ve obviously been to Boneshire Brew Works (since their very first day of opening), but this was the first time going to their “Taps @ Soma” location. The ZeroDay location is similarly the same, its technically a “new” location for them, thus why it makes the list.

Brews and Bands for Bart https://thebeerthrillers.com/2021/08/11/brews-and-bands-for-bart/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=brews-and-bands-for-bart Wed, 11 Aug 2021 22:00:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=7900
Brews and Bands for Bart

Block Party of the Summer

How do you recognize one of the baddest and coolest party throwers around? By throwing one of the biggest and baddest bashes ever in his honor! Thats just what’s in store this Saturday at Tattered Flag. We’ve discussed Bartley Kaminski here on the blog before, in numerous different ways, but recently with his passing, and with the event here and various events in the distant past.

This event has been planned out for quite a while now, but has really blown up with Bart’s passing. Tons of breweries adding their names to the list, and lots of other additions, and add – ons and groups adding to it and showing up in various ways to help the cause. It looks to be one hell of a bash, and one hell of a way to salute, and remember Bart and to throw one final rad party in his honor and memory.

Bartley Kaminiski

We talked about Bart before here, and talked about his passing previously here: Farewell to Bartley Francis Kaminski. He founded Kollision Media, Hop Hedz Gear, and has been referred to as “The Willy Wonka of Beer Events”. I could go on and on about him here. He was just a great guy, the life of the party without being too much, and everyone who knew him, or even just met him at one event or the other has amazing memories or stories to tell about him. My buddy talks about Bart’s green – suit or green – man appearance at the Atlantic City Brewfest all the time. There was very rarely an event in the Central PA area where you didn’t see a Hop Hedz Gear stand or Bart himself. And I guarantee you there was at least one person walking around in a tee shirt or hoodie that he made.

I can’t do him justice here discussing his amazing life, but we can do him justice by having one heck of a party in his honor.

Brews and Bands for Bart

The final brewery list for Brews and Bands for Bart posted today (Wednesday 8.11.21)

Look at that line-up! And word is there might be more additions to come and stuff, even though this is the “finalized” list. And I’m sure some might have their own little additions or add ons or secret hidden stashes too.

Here is a full list with all of their Untappd links:

Word is also Lancaster Brewing Company, North Country Brewing, and maybe one or two more will be unofficially added. That is one hell of a lineup right there! With breweries from out of state like Tripping Animals (Florida) and much more.

And let us not forget the bands part of this event as well!
