Mellow Mink Brewing’s Closing Announcement

Mellow Mink

This. One. Hurts. Some places, some breweries, just become a part of you and part of your craft beer experience, and world, and enjoyment. As we see more and more breweries closing this year, and the upcoming years, some are going to hurt more than others. Each person is different, and each brewery’s closing will affect people differently; but this one really just hurts. Matt and Cole are such wonderful people, who have done a lot for the beer community, have made a tremendous brewery and bar experience, and have been such wonderful people to talk beer with, this absolutely hurts. Like The Alementary and their closing, Mellow Mink Brewery held a very special place in our hearts here at The Beer Thrillers. We just want to go above and beyond to say thank you to all Matt and Cole and have done for the community.

Mellow Mink Brewing is located at 4830 Carlisle Pike in Hampden Township (4830 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050).

Mellow Mink Brewing is a craft brewery located in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, known for its unique and innovative approach to brewing. Founded by Matt Miller and Cole Taylor, Mellow Mink specializes in producing a wide range of craft beers, with a particular focus on sours and barrel-aged brews. The brewery has gained a reputation for its meticulous brewing process and the use of high-quality ingredients, ensuring each beer offers a distinct and memorable flavor profile.

The brewery’s taproom provides a welcoming and stylish environment for patrons to enjoy their beverages. With a sleek and modern design, the taproom offers a comfortable space for beer enthusiasts to gather and savor Mellow Mink’s diverse selection. In addition to its regular lineup, the brewery frequently releases limited-edition and seasonal beers, keeping the menu fresh and exciting for visitors. The taproom also hosts various events, including beer tastings, food pairings, and community gatherings, enhancing the overall experience.

Josh and Ben hanging out with Matt and Cole at Mellow Mink Brewery (January 2020)

When our blog was still new and baby fresh, Matt invited Josh and I out to their brewery to have a behind the scenes tour and get an intimate look at their operation, their beers and their sours, and we had such a wonderful time hanging out with Matt and Cole and spending hour and hour after hour talking about beer to no end. (See: Brewery Visit – Mellow Mink Brewery) I can’t thank Matt and Cole enough for that experience, as we learned so much from it all, and more importantly – just had a wonderful night.

Mellow Mink Brewing is Closing

As more and more breweries are closing, theres a lot of dynamics at play, and a lot of reasons for why they are closing. There is certainly a ‘bubble bursting’ in the craft beer industry, no matter how much some will tell you otherwise. And there is so many reasons and things that go into what makes a brewery great, or what will keep it standing out, and will keep people going back. The loss of Mellow Mink will be a big blow to the Central PA and the Harrisburg area and Harrisburg adjacent beer area.

Here is their announcement posted to social media:

Mellow Mink Brewing’s Closing Announcement

Today, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the upcoming closure of Mellow Mink Brewing. We have cherished the opportunity to serve our fans and community for the past six years. We are deeply proud of the beers and cocktails that we crafted, and the all-inclusive environment that we fostered. We now plan to wind-down brewing and taproom operations and close permanently by the end of August 2024. We hope you will visit us again before we are gone – we will be releasing several small batch and full-scale blends that are currently in the tanks. Thank you all for your love and support over the years!

Mellow Mink Brewing – Facebook Post

The out pouring of support started immediately right after they made their announcement and posts. The love the community has for them clearly shown, sadly, not enough support was given while they were fully in operation.

But, please everyone, lets go and visit them throughout July, and August, until their last day. Lets show Matt and Cole all the support we can while the doors are open — and afterwards. Let them know how much they are loved by the community. How great their sours are, and how much their stouts, and IPAs, kicked butt as well.

I just want to reiterate how much love we have for Matt and Cole and all the staff at Mellow Mink Brewery, and wish the absolute best for all involved in the future and everything they do. Lets all raise a pint to Matt, Cole, the staff of Mellow Mink, and the brewery itself!

(Join us, Josh, Ben, and Amy, as we will be visiting Mellow Mink, Friday – July 5th, after 6PM.)

Black Rock Brewing Company – Downtown Pottsville

Black Rock Brewing Company in Downtown Pottsville Will Not Be Re – Opening

It is with a sad heart we have to yet again report unfortunate news in the craft beer industry. As just announced (under a half hour ago), the Black Rock Brewery in downtown Pottsville, Pennsylvania; will not be re – opening.

They shared a post by Bobby Weaver on their Facebook account just a bit ago which states why they won’t be re – opening. The shared post reads:

It is with a heavy, heavy heart that I am forced to announce that Black Rock will not be re-opening. We love Pottsville. Anyone who knows myself or Abby knows this all too well. If I wasn’t someone challenging Pottsville City Hall and the “leaders” of this City who sit on City Council – Black Rock would still be open today.

We love the old YWCA building, with its iconic architecture and rich history shared with many who still live here. However, restoring and converting old buildings like this one, built in 1893, is an extremely difficult endeavor. We took out massive loans to finance this major historical restoration and conversion. Personally, I’ve never been more proud of a project I’ve worked on. It’s a survivor, having suffered through an INCREDIBLY difficult first 2 years of life. We NEEDED year 3 to be the payoff, just like all new businesses. We fought through our growing pains, figured out what people wanted, and had a kickass staff ready for an epic summer in Pottsville. We even expanded our outside seating with the picnic patio, added a pool table and dart boards, and had exciting events lined up, such as more beer/wine train excursions, an art installation with the Schuylkill Historic Society, and SO many scheduled bands.

Then, on the early morning of May 17th, we had an after-hours fire. It was caused by a freak equipment malfunction with our grill, and it led to one of the worst calls (so far) I’ve ever received as a business owner. When I arrived, a fleet of fire trucks, representing all fire departments in Pottsville, was already on the scene. Every fire is dangerous, but we were fortunate that the alarms in our building miraculously alerted a passing Pottsville PD officer at 1am. He gained access to the building and extinguished the fire within minutes from when it started – absolutely incredible. By the time the first firefighters arrived, the fire was already completely extinguished. The damage was minimal, contained, and we couldn’t have been luckier. We even got the whole thing on video!

However, upon learning that a local business had suffered a fire, our City Council members used it to score cheap political points. The code office condemned our building and revoked our certificate of occupancy, which left us utterly shocked and completely confused.

They knew the fire was small, they knew it was extinguished extremely fast, and they knew there was no reason to take such drastic action. A few days after the fire, representatives from the City of Pottsville government conducted a “life safety inspection” of our building. These code officers were the same individuals against whom I had filed official complaints. The same 3rd Party Code Inspector, who gladly accepted $3,000+ for our final inspection just 2 years ago, accompanied them. They meticulously examined our entire building that was approved, inspected, and untouched from the fire, from top to bottom, for over an hour, and then they left without saying a single word. They found 67 items, literally everything they could find, with the most petty violation being the height at which we hung our basement bathroom mirrors was a few inches too high. Violation. There were certainly some legitimate items on the list, such as emergency lights needing repairs and outlet covers, or our temporary use of extension cords. However, these were all easy fixes that we’ve completed weeks ago and would not have caused us to close.

We have been closed for 6 weeks, and our hope is gone. Due to the revocation of our certificate of occupancy, we were required to submit entirely new architectural designs for the project. Unfortunately, every plan we have submitted so far has been denied, despite being submitted and sealed by licensed architects. The lack of clear answers and constantly shifting requirements have left us without hope. Our efforts have been consistently shot down, with emails and calls going unanswered or weeks in between contact, and general correspondence hostile. We can’t go on like this. They have bullied yet another business into closing its doors in Pottsville, we aren’t the first.

I’m choosing my family. Abby & I are having our second child, a girl, here in a few days. I’m also choosing our other two businesses, Pressed & Farlows, both of which won Readers Choice awards this year! Best coffeehouse AND best deli & hoagies, it was such an honor. If the City of Pottsville government isn’t willing to fight for this project and save a historic building, neither am I. The dark and pathetic side of small town politics snuffed out Black Rock Brewpub. This is the embodiment of everything I’ve been working to change in Pottsville, and why I’m running for City Council.

We have remained closed through Memorial Day Weekend and the entire month of June. As a primarily outdoor venue, the summer season is crucial for us. However, with the roadblocks, red tape, and ever-changing rules, we have been crippled. We can’t plan events, retain our staff, or do ANYTHING when we have no idea when we can open, and we have no other options. Our employees are out of jobs, this historic building is closed, and it pains us to see Pottsville suffer. We hope that this goodbye is not forever.

Black Rock Brewing Company – Facebook Shared Post

Unfortunate News

This is very unfortunate news as Black Rock was a staple to the Pottsville community. There is other Pottsville breweries in the area (most notably the Yuengling Brewery as well as Pilger Ruh Brewing).

There is no talk or word yet on the Black Rock Brewing in Linglestown, Pennsylvania.

The fire back on May 17th really set them back, and as it turns out, crippled the business. Its a shame to see travesties and tragedies like this happen to businesses and that force them to shut down.

Fires aren’t new to breweries – in just the past few years, Victory Brewing had a fire and explosion at their Kennett Square location, and the Funk Brewery in Elizabethtown had a fire. As well as the brewers Brooke and Shannon Hemauer had a fire at their own home.

We offer our condolences to those affected by the loss of Black Rock Brewing, and we wish the best for all in the future going forward.

May 17th Fire

Back on May 17th, Black Rock Brewing had a fire. Their Facebook post from the date sums it up:

In case you didn’t hear, we had a silly little freak fire in the kitchen late last night. No one was there at the time and it’s minimal damage, but we will be temporarily closed while we work on cleaning up and making sure everything is in normal tip-top shape. Stay tuned for re-opening updates!

As always, our whole team is super grateful for the incredible speed and effeciency of our local police and fire departments. They’re the real MVPs.

Black Rock Brewing Company – Facebook Post (May 17th, 2023)

The post was accompanied by a Black Rock Brewing Company logo with “OK but Temporary Closed”.

They have 27 unique beers with a total of 2,918 ratings, and a global average rating of 3.58 (as of 6.28.23). Their Untappd description reads: Black Rock Brewing is a landmark craft microbrewery in Downtown Pottsville, featuring our own local brews, Yuengling Beer, SpringGate Wine, and food sourced from the historically rich coal region.

Fury Brewing Company’s Facebook post

Announcement

Scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed just a few minutes ago, (which is mostly breweries and beer related pages), I passed over Fury Brewing Company’s post. Which you can read here: “Fury Brewing Company – Facebook”.

This was posted at 9:40AM (and I saw this at 10:02 and writing this very post up right now at 10:05AM).

Their post reads:

All of us here at Fury Brewing have loved serving you all for the past four and a half years. With those years come many memories we will always cherish!

We are very sad to announce that we are officially closed.

For some people who didn’t see our original post about our closing – Unfortunately, Covid has taken a toll on many business’ including ours, but we are thankful for the years spent with our customers.

We love each and everyone of you and are going to miss the conversations with you!

Thank you for continuing to come in during our last month!

Fury Brewing Company (Facebook)

The Closure

Sadly, this isn’t the first closure in the area, and unfortunately its not the only one listed as a result of COVID. Certainly COVID-19 has not been kind to the brewing industry, and quite a few breweries, businesses, restaurants, and various other companies have also shuttered doors over the past year or so.

Fury Brewing Company was located on the outskirts of Pittsburgh in Irwin. Spigot Brewing also located in the Pittsburgh area has also recently closed, citing COVID as one of the reasons. You can still check out Fury Brewing’s website here: Fury Brewing Company Homepage.

It is with a heavy heart making this announcement. Fury Brewing had a devoted following and was very involved with their community, so it is sad to see them go. We wish the best for all involved in their futures and hope some good may come of this with their workers and the property.

Thanks For Reading

Thank you all for reading. Hopefully things will turn around, as COVID starts to get more under control, and life gets back to normal more and more. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy and happy. Today I’m looking to get to do another road trip of breweries and will be heading my night at Boneshire Brew Work’s 5th Anniversary Celebration. Hopefully I will see you there.

Prost!

Stoudts Brewing Closing https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/02/05/stoudts-brewing-closing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=stoudts-brewing-closing Wed, 05 Feb 2020 13:19:12 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=2100
Stoudts Brewing Company logo

This is certainly not the blog article I wanted to do today. Yesterday (2.3.20) the news came out while I was at work. In the morning before work, I started writing my next beer review – This Is The Way – by Broken Goblet, but with the news of Stoudts Brewing closing, I’ve pushed that back. Around 1PM or so yesterday, Stoudts Facebook page posted this message:

Friends,

As we’re sure you know, the craft beer industry is changing. 33 years ago, when Carol Stoudt became America’s first female brew master since prohibition, craft beer was a total rarity with only about 150 breweries nation-wide. Today there are nearly 8 thousand. The truth is, with such an increase in competition, and with Carol and Ed preparing for retirement, we’ve had to make the incredibly difficult decision to drastically scale back brewery operations, with a plan to cease production by Winter’s end. At this point, we will still have a limited supply of beer for purchase and on tap in our brew pub.

We are considering all investment opportunities, but regardless of the brewery’s future, Stoudts as a whole will live on. The restaurant which has stood for 58 years will continue to serve scratch-cooked dishes and hand-trimmed steaks. The bakery’s 120-year old yeast culture will continue to produce perfect sourdoughs, and we will not slow down our commitment to vegan and heritage baking. The antiques mall will continue to house only the finest pieces, and the bier garden will be home to ever more musical evenings and dog-friendly events.

Thank you so much for joining us on this multi-generational journey. Your support has always meant the world, and we hope that you will continue to shape the future of Stoudts with us.

Prost!
The Stoudt Family

P.S. our official press release can be found here: https://stoudts.com/brewery/

Source: Stoudts Facebok page
Stoudts new signature logo

Predictably, the Craft Beer online community erupted upon the news. Soon after their announcement, PennLive.com and LancasterOnline both ran stories (links provided at the ending in the sources). In Central PA, this is sadly not the first closing news in recent history. On January 25th, Crystal Ball Brewing in York PA closed up permanently. (You can read our coverage of it here: Crystal Ball Closing.)

All day yesterday, and so far today, my Facebook and Twitter feeds, Facebook groups, etc, are all posting the Stoudts message. Accompanied by congratulations to Carol Stoudt for retiring, as well as dismay at the closing of the actual brewery. Even across the country where Stoudts isn’t readily available there is all kinds of talk about its closing. Being one of the oldest craft breweries – at least of the new wave – and closing, its extremely disheartening.

Just to give you some kind of scope and size of Stoudts’ Brewing, look at how they have their own Wikipedia page: Stoudts Brewing Co. Not many craft breweries can claim that, let alone ones in Pennsylvania.

For some background on the Stoudts and their brewery, lets look to their beginning. Carol and Ed Stoudt began brewing and opening their brewery and restaurant in Adamstown, Lancaster County, PA, back in 1987. Carol is credited as being one of the first female brewers since Prohibition. At the time of their startup, there was only 150 active breweries in America, there is currently 8,000 some (at the start of the year).

Carol announced her retirement this year, and with that, the brewing aspects of the business will be shutting down. The Black Angus restaurant – Ed’s original start-up – will continue. At the start, Ed had his Black Angus restaurant and they added the brewing operations to it.

“This was a difficult decision to make, but we’re not moving enough volume to justify the expense of keeping the brewery open. However, we’re not closing the doors to any business opportunities that could help the Stoudts brand live on.” Carol Stoudt stated for the press release posted on their website (and circulated on social media).

Recently, Sly Fox and Stoudts did a collaboration for a new beer – Black Lager.

Similar to Crystal Ball’s closing recently, cited reasons are over-saturation of the market, pressures from giant breweries like In-Bev and CoorsMiller, and economic factors like the new sales tax, aluminum upticks, and other factors. PennLive recently did a write-up (just posted a few days ago) on the over-saturation of the craft beer market: Suds Up. Its a rather weak article, but does go over the talking points that most people have been discussing (in and out of the industry). (This will possibly be a future article here on The Beer Thrillers, where, perhaps myself and J. Doncevic and maybe others will discuss reasons for closings, and preventative measures for breweries in the area.)

Central PA definitely has a large assortment of breweries, and the list is ever growing. In Dauphin county, looking at towns like Hershey – Troegs Independent Craft Brewery and Iron Hill Brewing (with a Rotunda Brew Pub), in Harrisburg – The Millworks, ZeroDay Brewing, Boneshire Brew Works, The Vegetable Hunter, and Pizza Boy’s secondary location at Official BBQ and Burgers, in Middletown with Tattered Flag (as well as their location primarily for their distillery options in Hershey), Elizabethtown has Cox Brewing Company as well as Moo-Duck Brewery, and Hummelstown is set to open Rubber Soul Brewing (tentative date being April / May) and Howling Henry’s Tap Room. And this is just a small sample size. Its not going into other new breweries opening like Hemeaur’s and Wolf Brewing. Or the many other options in the Lebanon, Lancaster, Perry, and other counties close by.

For Stoudts Brewing, the brewery operations will cease in Spring, allowing the brewery to go up for sale. No word on any specifics on the sale or if there is any interested parties yet. The restaurant, and other adjoining and adjacent businesses will remain open for the foreseeable future. No word on exact dates, just the ambiguous ‘spring’ announcement. Most likely to give time to move all product on their floor. And to finish out the tanks and release what has been made.

In 2019 the Brewers of Pennsylvania Association honored Carol Stoudt with their inaugural “Presidents Award”. She was a pioneer and an inspiration for many in the industry, male or female, race or creed, she was an inspiration and a fantastic spirit for the community and industry as a whole. Her retirement is well deserved and hopefully will be blissful and peaceful. At the end of the press release she stated that she’s done her turn and its time for the next generation to take over. That regardless of the brewery’s future, the Stoudts tradition will live on. The Restaurant and Antiques Mall will remain in operation, and hopefully through investors or potential interested parties the brewery itself will be bought and remain brewing.

Hopefully this will be the last of these closings articles I’ll have to write for a while. This was intended to be a beer review, not a sad closing article. I do have several beer review articles to post, some of which are: Doppelganger by Tree House, Loki (by Karl Larson) of Newfangled Brew Works, This is the Way by Broken Goblet, Anagnorisis by Boneshire Brew Works, and much more.

Sorry for this article only now coming out Wednesday morning, I started it yesterday morning (Tuesday, 2.4.20) and intended to finish it after work, but didn’t get a chance to (kids, life, stopping in at Newfangled Brew Works to try Karl Larson’s first small batch for them – Loki, myriad of things, etc.), but its finished now. I am finishing up a six-day work week today (yay!), but will have off the next three days (unexpected and unplanned three day weekends in the casino industry are basically unheard of, but so very well beloved). Tomorrow I have a funeral for my great Uncle Ed, who passed away on the 1st, on his 90th birthday. Possibly Thursday (tomorrow) night I will be doing the podcast for LOST Seasons 3 and 4, if not Thursday, probably Friday night. Saturday is the big bottle share at Tattered Flag with Breweries in PA. Myself and D. Scott will be attending that. So that should be interesting.

For those new to the blog, please check out some of our recent articles. Like the Tree House series of beer reviews: Sap, Autumn, Julius, and Haze (with Doppelganger forthcoming). Or check out my beer review of Florence by Hill Farmstead. Or you can check out some of our older beer reviews like LazerSnake by Three Floyds, or Baby Genius by Bissell Brothers, or The Veil’s Black & Blue Tastee.

And as always, I’ll recommend checking out our Facebook and Twitter pages (located at the bottom on the icons), and please click to follow us either through WordPress or by signing up with your e-mail so you’ll be alerted as to our next blog’s posting.

Cheers everyone! And maybe I’ll get to see you at the bottle share. Leave a comment here for any of your fondest Stoudts memories or if you’ll be going to the bottle share so we can meet up. Prost!
