Tattered Flag at Hollywood Casino Opening: August 22nd, 2021 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2021/08/22/tattered-flag-at-hollywood-casino-opening-august-22nd-2021/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=tattered-flag-at-hollywood-casino-opening-august-22nd-2021 Sun, 22 Aug 2021 14:47:11 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=7912
Tattered Flag at Hollywood Casino (Grantville) Logo

Tattered Flag’s Fifth Location Opens Today

Today is a big day for Tattered Flag and for Hollywood Casino. Firstly, as we’ve mentioned earlier (Tattered Flag to Open its 5th Location) today will be the grand opening of Tattered Flag’s fifth location. On top of having their brewery and distillery in Middletown, the lounge in Hershey (the former Hershey Biergarten), their Gettysburg location, as well as opening their barrel house in Lancaster, they are opening a dining room and pub in the Hollywood Casino at Grantville. Formerly the Skybox Restaurant in the casino (second floor), it is now going to be a dining room, pub, and restaurant for Tattered Flag.

Penn National Gaming and Hollywood Casino has recently been on a big push with their ‘myheroes’ promotion, to honor the heroes of America. Military veterans, EMTs, nurses, and other front line heroes. They have recently built a massive stage near the employee parking lot called the “myheroes stage” and tonight kicks off the start of their “Outdoor Concert Series” with Journey. Other acts include Larry The Cable Guy, John Fogerty, and Jeff Dunham.

But first, a look at the dining room and pub that Tattered Flag is opening today:

Hollywood Casino

The Hollywood Casino in Grantville is located at 777 Hollywood Blvd, Grantville, PA 17028. It is considered a “racino” because it has both a race track and a casino. It is 240,000 square feet, and has slots, table games, a poker room (which has been closed since the COVID outbreak), an indoor stage, a race track, several restaurants, a Top Golf, and now an outdoor stage. The track first opened August 30th, 1972, and the casino itself opened on February 12th, 2008.

Formerly, prior to COVID, the upstairs restaurant at Hollywood Casino was a sportsbar themed restaurant called The Skybox. After the first COVID shut – down, it did not reopen, and following the second shut – down Hollywood Casino instead turned their H Lounge area (near the indoor stage) into a quasi eatery / restaurant using the Skybox themed menu (though slimmed down). Now, finally, on August 22nd, 2021, the restaurant is reopening, but also completely rebranded as “Tattered Flag at Hollywood Casino”.

Tattered Flag at Hollywood Casino will boast an impressive 8,900 square foot restaurant and kitchen that overlooks most of the casino floor from the second floor. You can access it from the elevators or the main stairway near the one entrance.

The new restaurant will be serving the distinct craft beers and spirits created at their Middletown location. They are still operating and brewing (and distilling) from just their Middletown location. For more information on Hollywood Casino, the myheroes promotions, the outdoor concert series, Tattered Flag at Hollywood Casino, and much more, see the links at the end of the article.

Journey at the myheroes Outdoor Stage

Journey at Hollywood Casino’s outdoor stage “myheroes stage”

Tonight also kicks off the Outdoor Concert Series for Hollywood Casino in Grantville. With the first band performing in their series – Journey. Future concerts are John Fogerty, Larry the Cable Guy, and Jeff Dunham. The stage was just finished construction yesterday, and is located near the main drive – in entrance by the employee parking lot. (Impossible to miss as you drive in the main entrance.)

This is the first ‘big’ concert that Hollywood Casino in Grantville has scheduled. And its all a big part of their ‘myheroes’ promotion, to give back to military veterans and frontline workers who have been indispensable , especially in recent history with COVID and everything else that has gone on in the world and in America. This is Penn National and Hollywood Casino giving back. Tattered Flag’s rebranding of the upstairs restaurant also ties in with the ‘myheroes’ promotions.

Grand Opening: LoveDraft’s Brewing Company – August 7th, 2021 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2021/08/06/grand-opening-lovedrafts-brewing-company-august-7th-2021/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=grand-opening-lovedrafts-brewing-company-august-7th-2021 Fri, 06 Aug 2021 22:30:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=7892
LoveDraft’s Brewing Company’s Grand Opening is Tomorrow – August 7th, 20221 in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. (Photo courtesy of LoveDraft’s Brewing Company’s Facebook page.)

The Grand Opening

Its finally here! Tomorrow is the full, true, grand opening for LoveDraft’s Brewing Company! We’ve talked before on the blog of their soft opening, and their continued soft opening, and their “no kids allowedpolicy, and all the media and attention, and controversy that has ensued because of that. But, now its time to talk about their full grand opening.

We first broke the news that the Harrisburg downtown bar – JB LoveDraft’s Micropub – was going to be getting their own brewery back in October 20220. “Is JB LoveDraft’s Opening a Brewery?” And now its time for that realization to happen.

Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania

Its time to get ready Mechanicsburg, because LoveDraft’s is going to be a lot different than a normal bar and a normal brewery on your block. Just take a look at their social media presence and you’ll understand.

Recently, LoveDraft’s got some nation wide attention with their “no kids allowed” policy post, which you can read about here: “NO KIDS ALLOWED“. They followed this all up with a list of their in-house rules, some of which are: everyone must be 21+, no politics, no religion, no sports, no wearing certain colors, be accepting of all people, and finally and most importantly “HAIL CTHULU.”

They are going into the old Quakerstate Lube off the Carlisle Pike. The address for the LoveDraft’s Brewery is 165 Gateway Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA.

The head brewer for LoveDraft’s will be Terry Hawbaker. The award winning former brewer for Pizza Boy. If you are from the Central PA area, you are most likely familiar with his work and his beers, and I’m sure you will be loving the beers he gets to make at LoveDraft’s.

The Venue

The venue is designed to be very similar to their bar in Harrisburg. They will be a big music presence in the area, and are working with the former production and agents from the Chameleon Club to book talents for their stage. Along with their rules policy, they will have a very eclectic and loud brand of music playing, with a much more adult theme to it than most other breweries and bars, especially in the area.

Their kitchen is going to be “Smokehouse” themed, ran by ShakeDown BBQ. They will specialize in BBQ, vegan and meat, and similar cuisine. Their Facebook page (under the MENU tab) currently has a code reader to let you see their full menu.

Grand Opening

The grand opening party / event kicks off at 5PM – tomorrow – August 7th, 2021. You can find their Facebook event page here: LoveDraft’s Grand Opening. It is looking to be a banger of a party!

Social Media Links and other Links

You can follow LoveDraft’s on the following social media outlets:

Can’t wait to get to see you guys out there at LoveDraft’s, listening to some killer tunes, eating amazing grub, and washing it down with Terry’s fantastic beers. Cheers all and Hail Cthulu!

Brewery Opening: Howling Henry’s (Hummelstown) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/10/10/brewery-opening-howling-henrys-hummelstown/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=brewery-opening-howling-henrys-hummelstown Sat, 10 Oct 2020 13:25:20 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=4638
Howling Henry’s Brewery logo – the latest brewery to open; opening on October 9th, 2020.

To little or no fanfare, the latest brewery, and another to Hummelstown, opened on October 9th, 2020 (yesterday). They had posted on their Facebook page their permit and that they would be opening soon, but, to my surprise, I had seen no notice of their actual opening date.

Howling Henry’s Permit

Their last Facebook post was on September 28th, and with the above picture, it stated:

“A temporary permit was given to me to open my taproom this morning. Shooting for October 9th for the grand opening of Howling Henry’s Taproom. Check my website for more information.”

I had seen this notice and post and re-shared it on our Facebook page, but for some reason, the little notice of “shooting for October 9th” I overlooked. I unfortunately, despite having my day off was out of town with friends (we went to Wellsboro, PA for the PA Grand Canyon), so I was out of town and unable to attend the opening.

They are the second Hummelstown brewery to open this week. Rubber Soul Brewing Company opened on Monday, October 5th, 2020, along South Hanover Street (across from the Rita’s) in the former borough building.

Howling Henry’s Merchandise Stand

Howling Henry’s has been around for a while in the Hummelstown area. They have been at the Mount Hope Renaissance Faire brewfest for several years (with their unique stand and jockey box of the doghouse). They have also been selling their bottles to the local shops and bars (JoJo’s Pizza Shop Restaurant on Main Street often carried their bottles in their cooler), and they distributed some kegs to local bars (Warwick Hotel would occasionally have them on tap). They’ve also been selling their bottles in the recent year or so at various farmer’s markets (the Hershey’s Chocolate Street Market primarily).

COVID-19 (the coronavirus) has certainly played an interesting issue in their opening this year, and has delayed much in the way of the taproom opening. Several other breweries opened amid the pandemic – Hemauer, Rubber Soul, Highway Manor, Cox’s Rally Point, etc. This is certainly an interesting time and a hard time for businesses to open, thrive, and grow their brands. There has been a lot of uncertainty, but it’s great to see Greg get to realize his dreams and open Howling Henry.

Greg – the owner and brewer for Howling Henry’s (per their Twitter)

Howling Henry’s taproom is located at 35 East 2nd St in Hummelstown. This is located near the exit of Hummelstown (the underpass) heading towards South Hanover (where South Hanover street becomes Grandview leading out towards Route 39 and East Hanover / Hershey). It is across the street from M&S Auto (a used car shop and garage). It is about three blocks down from the square of Hummelstown (Main Street / South Hanover crossing).

A walking map of Hummelstown, showing Howling Henry’s and Rubber Soul

This will become the second brewery / taproom in Hummelstown now (coincidentally both opening this week as well, going from 0 to 2 in five days flat!). The above map shows a walking path from Howling Henry’s to Rubber Soul. Making the town a nice tourist stop for craft beer enthusiasts now.

The Hummelstown Area enlarged (Howling Henry’s and Rubber Soul route by car shown)

Howling Henry’s joins a growing community of breweries within five-fifteen minute driving distance from the Hummelstown area. Including:

  • Troeg’s Independent Brewing (Hershey)
  • Iron Hill Brewing (Hershey)
  • Tattered Flag Distillery Lounge (Hershey)
  • Tattered Flag (Middletown)
  • Rubber Soul Brewing (Hummelstown)
  • Howling Henry’s (Hummelstown)
  • The Englewood (Hummelstown / Hershey)
  • Boneshire Brew Works (Rutherford)
  • Official BBQ – Pizza Boy (Rutherford)
  • Newfangled Brew Works (Rutherford)
  • The Millworks (Harrisburg)
  • ZeroDay Brewing (Harrisburg)
  • Appalachian Brewing Company (Harrisburg)
  • The Vegetable Hunter (Harrisburg)
  • Lancaster Brewing Company – Harrisburg Location (Harrisburg)

You can use the Brew Baron’s App to find more in the larger (Central PA) area. So as you can see from the above list, and the app, within just this small subset local area of Central PA there is many brewery choices. All good and well done establishments with wonderful beer offerings. You can see an older (and mostly outdated article I wrote about the breweries in the Hummelstown area here: Breweries On the Outskirts of Harrisburg 9.6.19).

Currently, on Untappd, Howling Henry’s is listed as a Nano Brewery, and recently updated their description page with the following: “Opening our taproom on October 9th at 6 PM. Howling Henry’s Brewery is crafting beer without rules, which causes our beers to be an nontraditional representations of their contemporaneity styles. Are you ready for a different take on traditional beer styles, then you should give Howling Henry’s a try? Our beers are not filtered, so we can offer as much flavor as possible. Tap room coming to Hummelstown soon; check my website out for details.” They have 11 Unique Beers listed, with a global average rating of 3.21 out of 3,825 ratings.

Their hours on their Facebook page for the taproom are listed as:

  • MONDAY: CLOSED
  • TUESDAY: CLOSED
  • WEDNESDAY: 5:00PM – 10:00PM
  • THURSDAY: 5:00PM – 10:00PM
  • FRIDAY: 5:00PM – 10:00PM
  • SATURDAY: 11:00AM – 6:00PM
  • SUNDAY: CLOSED

They use the old Theo’s Attanasoff pizza warehouse to brew their beers in a corner of the building. The old Theo’s warehouse is located at the corner of Duke and 2nd Street in Hummelstown, and is now primarily used by Pnuma Outdoors. (You can see a map of the Howling Henry’s brewing location and taproom below). The brewing location is off limits to tourists though.

Howling Henry’s to Pnuma Outdoors

Howling Henry’s has several social media outlets which you can keep abreast of their activities. Including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. You can also check out their website.

On their website you can read their backstory, which is:

My brewing story began after a department store wine kit was hauled off by the trashmen. Yes, a wine kit started my passion with brewing beer, and in time my business. I trashed the kit  because I  lacked knowledge in the process of wine-making, and more frighteningly, in how to clean and sanitize the equipment. The instructions emphasized sanitization, but the concern that I may get someone sick caused me to drop kick the kit into the waste can.

I then read a magazine article about home brewing. Who doesn’t like beer, right? This article made it clear that cleanliness is a very important part of the process, but as I read, I realized that  I was overthinking it. I began to understand that all of debris needs to be removed from the brewing equipment, and then a sanitizer is added to the equipment to kill most of the bacteria, so that your pitched yeast has no competition when it infects your bitter wort. Simple! I am a simple guy, and I figured that I can do that.

I bought my first brewing kit: 5 gallon brew kettle, a 5 gallon carboy, and a 7 gallon food grade bucket. The recipe was a brown ale. It was good for a month or two, and then it started losing flavor. I came to realize that bottling introduces oxygen to the finished beer. Oxygen in finished beer after time will degrade that beer’s flavor.

After a year of making my own recipes my wife and I were seated at a local watering hole for lunch (the Wednesday before Thanksgiving). She said, “Why don’t you start a brewery?” To be honest it was in the back of my head, but I figured that thought would never become a conversion with my wife. So, I agreed with her, as a good husband would do. Although, at the time, neither of us really understood what we were getting ourselves into.

I started reading from a website devoted to the entire brewing process. With this knowledge, I began brewing beers around ingredients I knew a little brewery could access without to much hassle. Through this site I also learned of a movie made in the mid 90’s called ‘Frankenbrew’. This video showed me that one guy with some determination, out of the box thinking, and hard work could start a brewery without investors, a bank loan, or a truck load of cash. I then followed the movie’s suggestions on what to buy from the used dairy equipment market. This offset the price of starting a new brewery significantly, since I had already priced out a real brewery’s equipment prior to seeing the movie. I knew I could never come up with a million or so dollars myself, and I wanted this brewery to be mine. Yes, you read that correctly! I am the only owner, investor, employee, brewer, boss, maintenance guy, and janitor. I did it all with help from some wonderful family members and great friends when they had time to help. It is a wonderful feeling to know I only have me to answer to.

Years later, I had the stainless steel equipment needed. I found a space three blocks from my home. By this time, I realized that I needed a real brew kettle. Having well over 200 gallons of boiling wort would be very dangerous in anything less than a proven kettle, so I ordered and purchased a 10 bbl Bennett Forgeworks brew kettle. I then started getting the paperwork inked with both the Federal and State government agencies. Approvals took a lifetime, okay about 6 months (a lifetime for a guy with barely any budget).

Please check out the pictures of my equipment here (if you’re interested in seeing what my frankinbrew system looks like).

Howling Henry’s Backstory.

So when in the Hummelstown area, be sure to check out the newest brewery – Howling Henry’s. Make sure you are in town during their hours (5PM-10PM on Wednesday through Friday and Saturday 11AM-6PM). The taproom is limited currently due to COVID restrictions, but its still a place to check out. Be sure to do so!

Brewery Opening: Highway Manor https://thebeerthrillers.com/2020/09/24/brewery-opening-highway-manor/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=brewery-opening-highway-manor Thu, 24 Sep 2020 19:33:13 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=4427
Highway Manor Brewing Co. will be opening Saturday 26th, 2020 in Camp Hill (Pennsylvania)

Another brewery is due to open in the greater Central Pennsylvania area (Central PA); this time its Highway Manor and it will be opening up in Camp Hill. This has been a long time work, and they’ve been working hard to get here. Yet again another brewery opening despite / during COVID-19 and the mess that the coronavirus has created this year (2020).

The Highway Manor Brewing Co. will be opening their doors as a taproom this Saturday – September 26th, 2020 – in Camp Hill at 11:00AM. They are located on Gettysburg Road (Camp Hill).

This has been their building that they’ve been brewing out of for years, but is now finally being turned into a taproom and will be opened to the public.

For many, if you are a big sour fan, or lambic, or Belgian, or saison fan, you are fully familiar with the portfolio that Highway Manor has to offer. They’ve been doing many brewfests for years, a highlight of which being their consistent showings and offerings at Lititz Brewfest. I remember one particular year, me and friends were there and had their Sour Stout (yes, you heard that correctly – a SOUR STOUT). Very unique and interesting beer. To see their full portfolio of beers you can check out their website here: Highway Manor’s Portfolio.

For others, you might have become familiar with them due to their statewide shipping that they’ve started during the COVID-19 and quarantine lockdown. They like several others in the state (Levante, Tired Hands, Tattered Flag, The Larimeer, etc.) have adapted, and overcame during the pandemic, creating a delivery system that allowed for them to ship statewide. If you would like to order statewide from them through their “drink from the barrel” – #drinkfromthebarrel – system, you can order here: Highway Manor Statewide Shipping – Ordering – Drink From the Barrel.

Highway Manor Logo

Highway Manor is ran by brewery owner and head brewer – Johnnie Compton III. He specializes in saisons, sours, lambics, and Belgians – especially Belgian Farmhouse styles. For those with knowledge of wine, and an appreciation for it, you will definitely enjoy his style and take on beers then as well. The house yeast for Highway Manor has been personally cultivated since the 1840s from Liverpool, Pennsylvania.

Be sure to follow Highway Manor Brewing Co. on their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts.

As always with us here at The Beer Thrillers we will be definitely checking them out in person hopefully very soon. So be sure to stop by Saturday when they open, starting at 11AM.

Also, please make sure to follow us on our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as well. Our account links are on every page (just click the logos), and be sure to sign up here on our site to subscribe and follow us directly.
