It’s sobering when one of the craft-beer world’s landmark names draws the curtain early. After 37 years, Rogue Ales & Spirits has stunned the industry and its loyal followers by shutting down its Newport, Oregon, production operations and all associated restaurant/taproom venues seemingly overnight. The move marks a dramatic fall for a company that helped define the Pacific Northwest craft-beer boom—and underscores the harsh remains of a beer market in contraction.

Just this past week we reported on Hell in a Bucket Brewing closing and West Connection Beer Vault closing.

Rogue Ales was a Top 50 Brewery (production size) for the country. Their production facility was located at 2320 SE Marine Science Dr, Newport, OR 97365 (which Google already lists as ‘Temporarily Closed’ just six hours after the announcement).

What Went Down

On Friday morning, the team at the Port of Newport was informed that Rogue would be vacating its 47,000-square-foot facility in South Beach—home to its brewery, warehouse, and flagship pub. Immediately thereafter, closure signs appeared at Rogue’s locations in Astoria, West Salem and Southeast Portland.
The financial troublescape is stark: Rogue reportedly owed roughly $545,000 in back rent to the Port of Newport, plus more than $30,000 in local taxes. That kind of liability postures a brewery once ambitious enough to distribute nationally in peril.

A Legacy in the Rear-View Mirror

Founded in Ashland, Oregon in 1988, Rogue rapidly became a cornerstone of the craft-beer revolution. Its Newport relocation in 1989 placed it on the coast, with a workhorse production facility and multiple pub outposts. Yet the past few years haven’t been kind. The craft beer sector is grappling with declining sales, rising overheads, labor and supply-chain costs—and even for stalwarts like Rogue, the pressure has mounted. For example, while Oregon’s craft segment shrank by roughly 4 percent in 2024, Rogue’s sales reportedly dropped by around 18 percent. The company tried to pivot—closing its distilling operations and seeking new lease terms—but the pace and scale of contraction appears to have overwhelmed the effort.

Unfortunately the rough year that is 2025 continues, as another brewery announces its taproom closure. On the heels of numerous large announcements, as well as Iron Hill announcing three taproom closures, Boxcar Brew Works is the next to announce their closure. There is a silver lining in this though, with the announcement of Premise Brewing emerging.

The following is the announcement that Boxcar Brew Works just posted on Facebook:

Hi Everyone,

I would like to thank you for your continued support and loyalty to Boxcar Brew Works over the years! It has been a joy to serve you all over the last 8+ years.

This is a message I have been regretting writing. It saddens me to inform you that the taproom for Boxcar Brew Works located on the Doolittle Station complex (1290Rich Hwy) will be closing permanently on Sunday 09/28/2025. With the new owners of the property, we were unable to come to a short- or long-term lease agreement. It’s with bittersweet and mixed feelings that I make this announcement. The complex and customers have been good to us over the years with us making many new friends and seeing some old friends with which we have lost touch. You never know who would be in the train car.

It’s not the end of the story for us though. Boxcar Beer will be available at a few different places until we can no longer distribute at the end of the year. Until then you can pick us up at some of our regular stops; El Gordo Burro (Du Bois, PA), Handlebar Cafe and Craft House, Saxonburg, PA, Super Sub & Six Pak (Du Bois, PA), Angry Goat (Du Bois, PA) and a few others out in the wild (Mike’s Beer Bar(Pgh), Federal Taphouse (State College). Please stop into any of them and enjoy a cold Boxcar beer.

This isn’t the end of us though! We will be opening a new brewery in downtown Du Bois soon. Located at 285 Hahne court, Du Bois, PA, Premise Brewing will be a place you want to stop and enjoy a cold one. Like and Follow us on FaceBook and Instagram to find out more about Premise Brewing. Boxcar Brew Works is currently located at 1290 Rich Hwy #300, DuBois, PA 15801. They have enjoyed over 8 years in business, and have been a lovely spot for the community and tourists alike. A unique spot with a unique appearance and vibe comparatively to other breweries. The new Premise Brewing will be located at 285 Hahne Ct, DuBois, PA 15801. Iron Hill has abruptly shuttered three of its brewpub locations — an unexpected shift in what was once a stable regional brand. While sixteen of its venues remain active for now, today’s announcement speaks to the larger challenges facing scaled brewpub chains in a changing marketplace.

What Just Happened

On September 10, 2025, Iron Hill revealed the closure of three distinct sites:

• Newark, Delaware (147 E Main Street)

• Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA (8400 Germantown Ave)

• Voorhees, New Jersey (13107 Town Center Blvd)

According to the chain’s press release, the decision was made “as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to adapt to a changing business landscape while focusing on strengthening its long-term growth and success.”

The remaining 16 locations are still open — for now — but the tone of the announcement suggests a pivot rather than maintenance of status quo.

Why This Matters

For craft-beer lovers in Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Iron Hill was more than a restaurant that brewed; it was a regional anchor. Founded in 1996 in Newark, DE, it held a reputation for blending scratch-kitchen fare with in-house beer, earning a string of medals at the Great American Beer Festival over more than two decades.

But the business model that served well when Craft Beer was still niche now confronts intense competition, rising overhead, and shifting consumer habits. As one Reddit commenter put it:

“They over-extended. A lot of these breweries think opening all these locations increases synergies… But once it tips, you’d be better off with a few locations that you have to turn people away at.”

And though the announcement didn’t use the words “bankruptcy” or “chain restructure” directly, the suddenness of the closures speaks volumes.

What’s Next (and What to Do)

If you frequented the shuttered venues, here are a few take-aways:

• If you had gift cards, frequent-visitor punches or beer club credits at the closed sites, check with Iron Hill’s corporate office for redemption options.

• Visit one of the still-open 16 locations to support the brand while it’s still around.

• Follow developments closely: this may be the leading edge of a broader contraction, not just a localized correction.

Final Tap

When a regional brewpub chain like Iron Hill pulls the plug on multiple sites in one fell swoop, it sends waves. In the craft-beer universe, where place, community and memory matter, these closures are more than square footage—they’re social geography. Whether Iron Hill can recalibrate and survive with its remaining locations remains to be seen. But one thing’s certain: for the Newark, Chestnut Hill and Voorhees communities, something beloved has ended.

You ever walk into a room that’s heavy with history? That’s the vibe when you step into Grist House Command, the newest spot from Grist House Craft Brewery, tucked inside what was once a Cold War-era Nike missile command center in Collier Township. This isn’t your typical craft beer launch—it’s a full-on story, a place where aviation relics meet hazy IPAs and dog-friendly patios.

From Military Mission to Malt Mission

Originally built in 1957 and activated in 1960 to guard Pittsburgh from aerial threats, the massive bunker—known as PI-62—sat quietly on one of the highest points in Allegheny County for decades. Now, it’s being reborn, with the heart of a brewery beating where a radar once blinked.

Grand Opening: September 6–7

Clear your calendar: Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., marks the grand opening, followed by a Sunday session from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Expect to walk into something that’s equal parts blast from the past and cutting-edge craft beer haven.

What’s On Tap (Literally and Figuratively)

• A 30-barrel brewhouse right on-site—hello, more core favorites and adventurous new brews

• Four bars, each pouring from 24 taps—yes, that’s 96 taps total waiting to be conquered
• Indoor seating for around 140, plus three dog-friendly decks to accommodate up to 300 patio-loving patrons
• A full kitchen dishing out family recipe–inspired fare that pairs just as well with conversation as it does with the suds
• History on display—glimpse photos, signage, and memorabilia from the bunker’s military days, where former service members are encouraged to drop by and reminisce over a pint

Why This Spot Matters

Co-owner Brian Eaton, along with partner Kyle Mientkiewicz, took over the property back in 2018, and today their vision is turning one of Pittsburgh’s hidden high-ground pieces into a landmark—beverage-style. While Grist House’s Millvale location started life in a repurposed slaughterhouse back in 2014, this new command-post-style taproom is something else—a bold next chapter with 30,000-barrel potential per year, compared to the current 2,500.

This place isn’t just beer-adjacent history—it’s built on it. And in a beer market that’s pretty crowded, there’s no better way to stand out than by honoring the past while embracing the present.

When a place you’ve been raising pints at for years closes its doors—without much warning—it cuts deeper than you’d expect. That’s exactly what happened on—and yes, I’ll say it—Saturday, August 16, 2025. That day marked the final pouring for one of Cincinnati’s most storied staples in the craft beer world: Listermann Brewing Company.

A Sudden Farewell, A Lifetime of Flavor

On Friday, August 15, 2025, the taproom, nestled at 1621 Dana Avenue in Evanston, posted a heartfelt message:

“Tomorrow, Saturday, August 16th, will be our final day of operations. We are deeply grateful to our amazing staff, loyal customers and community… You’ve been part of our story, and it’s been an honor to share our beer and our space with you.”

They didn’t lay out a reason why they had to close—and that silence echoes even louder in this town. The beer scene here has taken hit after hit lately—Brews like Humble Monk, 16 Lots, Taft’s, and even BrewDog Cincinnati have faded from the taplines this year alone.

What Made Listermann More Than Just a Brewery

To really get what we’ve lost, you have to go way back. The name “Listermann” started as Dan Listermann’s homebrewing gear business in 1991—not as a brewery, but a beacon for homebrewers, who’d gather, curious and tinkering. By 1994, it evolved into a full-blown homebrew shop; and by 2008, they’d flashed a brewery license and launched the Listermann Brewing Company on that same Dana Ave campus.

This place was a workshop, a classroom, a microbrewery, and a community hub—all rolled into one. Any local brewer you ask? There’s a good chance they got their first gear, their first guidance, their first inspiration right here.

Passing the Torch—Then the Lights Go Out

Founders Dan and Sue Listermann stepped back in 2023, handing the reins to Terrie and Steve Ipson. In January 2024, the new team opened a taproom kitchen—adding food, giving explorers one more reason to stay.

It all seemed like a path to longevity. But then August 2025 arrives, and bam: the beer stops flowing.

What Now for the Craft Community?

With Listermann gone, what’s next for Cincinnati’s beer lovers? We’ve lost a pioneer—but maybe, just maybe, that vacuum will spark the next wave. There’s a lot of spirit, literally and figuratively, in this town. I still believe—knowing this crowd—the drought won’t last. In a major shake-up for Arizona’s craft beer scene, two beloved hometown breweries—Huss Brewing Co. and PHX Beer Co.—have officially merged to create a new powerhouse: Zonafide Beverages LLC.
