Beer Wall on Penn has announced they are officially closed.

Beer Wall on Penn has announced they are officially closed

Another staple of craft beer in Reading, Pennsylvania, has announced they are closed. Located at 619 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611, the Beer Wall on Penn has been in operation for nearly five and a half years. On the same street as Chatty Monks Brewing / Pagoda City Brewing, Willow Creek Brewing, and Broken Chair Brewery. In just the past two years Chatty Monks has undergone big changes and turned into Pagoda City Brewing with new management, Willow Creek Brewing has closed, and Broken Chair Brewery just recently closed as well.

Their announcement on social media reads:

🌟 **Important Announcement** 🌟
After 5 1/2 incredible years the ave, we regret to inform you that Beer Wall on Penn has closed it’s doors. We want to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our amazing current and past employees. Your hard work, dedication, and passion have played an essential role in making Beer Wall a household name. To our customers, thank you for every pint poured, every smile shared, and every memory created. We couldn’t have done it without you. I got to live out a dream and for that, I’m forever thankful. It was one hell of a run! ❤️
We have retained our assets and “R” liquor license. If anyone is interested, please email beerwallonpenn@gmail.com

Reactions

Some reactions from people on Reddit, Facebook, and others talk about Reading, and the craft beer industry as a whole. For examples…

Broken Chair brewing, Say Cheese, Nitro Bar, Willow Creek Brewery, and now Beer Wall on Penn closed. WHAT THE HELL WEST READING?!?!?!

Scott Horner

And from Reddit:

Say Cheese, Nitro Bar, and West Reading Motor Club all closed because of a scandal involving the club owners son who managed Nitro and WMC. From what I’ve heard: none of those restaurants were profitable anyway.

Broken Chair’s owner said he was promoted at work, close to retirement, wanted to slow down and not invest more into growing the business.

Willowcreek closed because the owners retired.

Beer Wall: no clue.

My opinion: the restaurant/brewery business isn’t an easy one. And there were so many in WR. Two of the originals (Chatty Monks and Barley Mow) still seem busy. People might say it’s prices and inflation but Barley Mow is the most expensive of them all yet they’re busy because the food is amazing.

Most businesses fail in good times and bad. Honestly, I have no idea how half the businesses in WR make any money and most close within a year. Either there’s just no demand, they don’t market, or another business in a saturated market gets most of the business. That’s how capitalism works!

Mellow Mink Brewing is Closing https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/07/02/mellow-mink-brewing-is-closing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=mellow-mink-brewing-is-closing Tue, 02 Jul 2024 22:45:11 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15242

Mellow Mink Brewing’s Closing Announcement

Mellow Mink

This. One. Hurts. Some places, some breweries, just become a part of you and part of your craft beer experience, and world, and enjoyment. As we see more and more breweries closing this year, and the upcoming years, some are going to hurt more than others. Each person is different, and each brewery’s closing will affect people differently; but this one really just hurts. Matt and Cole are such wonderful people, who have done a lot for the beer community, have made a tremendous brewery and bar experience, and have been such wonderful people to talk beer with, this absolutely hurts. Like The Alementary and their closing, Mellow Mink Brewery held a very special place in our hearts here at The Beer Thrillers. We just want to go above and beyond to say thank you to all Matt and Cole and have done for the community.

Mellow Mink Brewing is located at 4830 Carlisle Pike in Hampden Township (4830 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050).

Mellow Mink Brewing is a craft brewery located in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, known for its unique and innovative approach to brewing. Founded by Matt Miller and Cole Taylor, Mellow Mink specializes in producing a wide range of craft beers, with a particular focus on sours and barrel-aged brews. The brewery has gained a reputation for its meticulous brewing process and the use of high-quality ingredients, ensuring each beer offers a distinct and memorable flavor profile.

The brewery’s taproom provides a welcoming and stylish environment for patrons to enjoy their beverages. With a sleek and modern design, the taproom offers a comfortable space for beer enthusiasts to gather and savor Mellow Mink’s diverse selection. In addition to its regular lineup, the brewery frequently releases limited-edition and seasonal beers, keeping the menu fresh and exciting for visitors. The taproom also hosts various events, including beer tastings, food pairings, and community gatherings, enhancing the overall experience.

Josh and Ben hanging out with Matt and Cole at Mellow Mink Brewery (January 2020)

When our blog was still new and baby fresh, Matt invited Josh and I out to their brewery to have a behind the scenes tour and get an intimate look at their operation, their beers and their sours, and we had such a wonderful time hanging out with Matt and Cole and spending hour and hour after hour talking about beer to no end. (See: Brewery Visit – Mellow Mink Brewery) I can’t thank Matt and Cole enough for that experience, as we learned so much from it all, and more importantly – just had a wonderful night.

Mellow Mink Brewing is Closing

As more and more breweries are closing, theres a lot of dynamics at play, and a lot of reasons for why they are closing. There is certainly a ‘bubble bursting’ in the craft beer industry, no matter how much some will tell you otherwise. And there is so many reasons and things that go into what makes a brewery great, or what will keep it standing out, and will keep people going back. The loss of Mellow Mink will be a big blow to the Central PA and the Harrisburg area and Harrisburg adjacent beer area.

Here is their announcement posted to social media:

Mellow Mink Brewing’s Closing Announcement

Today, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the upcoming closure of Mellow Mink Brewing. We have cherished the opportunity to serve our fans and community for the past six years. We are deeply proud of the beers and cocktails that we crafted, and the all-inclusive environment that we fostered. We now plan to wind-down brewing and taproom operations and close permanently by the end of August 2024. We hope you will visit us again before we are gone – we will be releasing several small batch and full-scale blends that are currently in the tanks. Thank you all for your love and support over the years!

Mellow Mink Brewing – Facebook Post

The out pouring of support started immediately right after they made their announcement and posts. The love the community has for them clearly shown, sadly, not enough support was given while they were fully in operation.

But, please everyone, lets go and visit them throughout July, and August, until their last day. Lets show Matt and Cole all the support we can while the doors are open — and afterwards. Let them know how much they are loved by the community. How great their sours are, and how much their stouts, and IPAs, kicked butt as well.

I just want to reiterate how much love we have for Matt and Cole and all the staff at Mellow Mink Brewery, and wish the absolute best for all involved in the future and everything they do. Lets all raise a pint to Matt, Cole, the staff of Mellow Mink, and the brewery itself!

(Join us, Josh, Ben, and Amy, as we will be visiting Mellow Mink, Friday – July 5th, after 6PM.)

Beers at a bar

Dude Fest: A Bar In Idaho Has Declared It ‘Heterosexual Awareness Month’ And Will Be Giving Free Beers To All Straight Men

In an unexpected turn of events, a quirky bar in Idaho, which also hosts a Conspiracy Theory Trivia Night (sounds intriguing), is celebrating Male Mondays throughout June. They are offering a free draft beer to all straight men. At first, I assumed it was a Gay Bar showing appreciation for their allies, but no, it turns out to be a straightforward political statement. This is yet another reminder of the complexities we navigate in the United States today. June, as many know, is also Pride Month, yet surprisingly, nine NFL teams have not yet acknowledged it on their social media platforms.

Our societal landscape is quite peculiar. I firmly believe in the freedom to do whatever you want, with whomever you want, whenever you want. However, the obsession with monitoring logo changes to rainbow colors, organizations debating these changes, and subsequent boycotts is rather amusing to me.

But that’s a topic for another time. The focus here is on the amusing irony of a bar trying to counter Pride Month by offering free beer to straight men. If things go as expected, the bar might end up distributing a significant amount of free beer (potentially even to gay individuals who grab their free drink and leave). Moreover, the idea of “sticking it to Pride Month” by packing a bar full of men seems quite counterintuitive and rather funny.

Philadelphia Beer History

Philadelphia has a rich beer history that dates back centuries, making it an even more enticing destination for college students interested in craft beer. The city played a significant role in shaping America’s brewing landscape and has been home to influential breweries throughout its history.

In the 19th century, Philadelphia was a brewing powerhouse, with over 100 breweries operating within the city limits. German immigrants, who brought their brewing traditions and techniques with them, played a crucial role in shaping Philadelphia’s beer culture. Lager beers, characterized by their crisp and clean flavors, gained popularity during this time. The city became known for its high-quality lagers, attracting beer enthusiasts from far and wide.

One prominent figure in Philadelphia’s brewing history is John Wagner, who established the first lager brewery in America in 1840. Wagner’s brewery laid the foundation for the rise of lager beer in the country and set a precedent for quality brewing practices. The legacy of Philadelphia’s early brewing pioneers can still be felt today, as the city continues to produce exceptional craft beers.

Fast forward to the modern craft beer movement, and Philadelphia remains at the forefront of the industry. The city has witnessed a resurgence of breweries, each with its own distinct style and creative approach to brewing. From traditional German-inspired lagers to innovative hop-forward IPAs and barrel-aged delights, Philadelphia’s craft breweries offer a wide spectrum of flavors and experiences for beer enthusiasts.

Moreover, Philadelphia hosts various beer festivals throughout the year, such as Philly Beer Week and the Craft Beer Express, showcasing the city’s commitment to celebrating and promoting its thriving craft beer scene. These events provide an opportunity for college students to immerse themselves in the local beer culture, engage with brewers, and sample an extensive array of beers from both local and national breweries.

By exploring Philadelphia’s beer bars, college students not only indulge in the present craft beer renaissance but also become part of a historical continuum. They can appreciate the city’s brewing heritage while supporting the next generation of innovative brewers who carry forward Philadelphia’s proud tradition of quality and craftsmanship.

In summary, Philadelphia’s beer history adds an extra layer of significance to the city’s craft beer scene. College students have the opportunity to connect with the past, present, and future of brewing while exploring the diverse range of beer bars that Philadelphia has to offer.

Conclusion

Philadelphia’s beer bars offer college students an array of options to explore the city’s thriving craft beer scene. From the Belgian delights of Monk’s CafĂ© to the local craft brews at Standard Tap and City Tap House, these beer bars provide an exciting and educational experience for beer enthusiasts of all levels. Whether students seek a cozy ambiance, a vibrant social scene, or an opportunity to expand their beer knowledge, Philadelphia’s beer bars are sure to satisfy their craft beer cravings. So, grab a pint, engage in spirited conversations, and embark on a flavorful journey through the diverse world of craft beer in Philadelphia. Cheers!

How to Successfully Open a Bar: A Step-by-Step Guide https://thebeerthrillers.com/2021/02/03/how-to-successfully-open-a-bar-a-step-by-step-guide/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-to-successfully-open-a-bar-a-step-by-step-guide Wed, 03 Feb 2021 15:45:06 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15489

A good craft beer bar contains beers of all different styles.

Opening a bar can be a lucrative venture, especially in areas with limited competition. With fewer bars around, you have more freedom to shape your business and attract a loyal customer base. However, before you can start pouring drinks, there are several crucial steps you need to follow. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process of opening a bar:

1. Develop a Comprehensive Business Plan

Every successful bar begins with a well-thought-out business plan. This document will serve as the foundation of your venture, detailing your business model, concept, and objectives. It should clearly outline your long-term goals as well as the short-term milestones you need to hit along the way.

Your business plan should also cover key details such as staffing requirements, vendor partnerships, and contractor agreements. Equally important is your brand identity—craft a compelling brand kit that includes your unique value proposition, logo, color scheme, and overall visual style. A strong brand will set your bar apart from competitors and resonate with your target audience.

2. Choose the Ideal Location

Once your business plan is in place, the next step is to find the perfect location for your bar. High-traffic areas are generally the best spots to attract a steady stream of customers. However, if you’re aiming for a more exclusive atmosphere, a less conspicuous location might be more suitable.

Consider your budget when selecting a location, as prime real estate in urban areas like downtown Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, or Harrisburg can be costly. While negotiating rent is an option, it’s not always feasible in markets where commercial property prices are on the rise.

3. Obtain the Necessary Licenses and Permits

Since your bar will be serving alcohol, securing the right licenses is critical. Each locality has specific regulations concerning the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with local laws and obtain the necessary permits. This may include a liquor license, health permits, and possibly a building permit if you’re constructing your bar from the ground up.

4. Design a Themed Ambiance

An elegant, beautiful craft beer bar can set the right tone for your establishment.

Your bar’s design should reflect the concept and atmosphere you want to create. The interior should align with the preferences of your target audience. For instance, if you aim to attract working-class patrons, consider a classic, midwestern theme complete with a vintage jukebox. On the other hand, if you’re targeting young professionals, opt for sleek, modern decor with ambient lighting.

Promoting your bar’s interior on social media is also essential. Use platforms like Instagram and Facebook to showcase your bar’s unique ambiance and entice potential customers.

5. Craft a Tempting Menu

A Charcuterie board is a great fun, light, and hip food menu item to include.

A well-curated menu is key to your bar’s success. In addition to offering a diverse selection of local and international drinks, ensure your food offerings complement the overall theme of your establishment. If your bar caters to a luxury crowd, include premium options like charcuterie boards featuring high-quality cheeses and expertly sourced meats such as wagyu beef.

A thoughtfully designed menu can attract both drinkers and non-drinkers, making your bar a go-to spot for a wide range of customers.

Conclusion

Opening a bar is a rewarding endeavor when approached with careful planning and a clear vision. By following these steps and staying focused on your goals, you can create a thriving bar that becomes a favorite in your community. If you’re passionate about the idea, now is the perfect time to turn your dream into reality.
