Background on the Awards

From NAGBW themselves:

This year, the competition consisted of 269 works from 96 authors, writers, journalists, historians, podcasters, professors, and other creators. These entrants represent 10 countries, 29 U.S. states, and two Canadian provinces.

Roughly 50 judges selected the top works across 15 categories. These judges collectively have more than 900 years of experience in journalism, media, academia, brewing, and related fields. Judges could award first, second, and third place awards, as well as an honorable mention. They could also designate an emerging voice award to a piece of work by an individual who has covered the beer industry for less than three years.

Best in Beer – Farm Show Awards (2024) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/01/09/best-in-beer-farm-show-awards-2024/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=best-in-beer-farm-show-awards-2024 Tue, 09 Jan 2024 20:35:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13547 The 108th Annual Farm Show

On Friday – January 5th, 2023 – the 108th Annual Pennsylvania Farm Show kicked off at the (historic?) Farm Show Arena / Expo Hall / Building in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The annual event brings people from all across the states in various agricultural industries to Harrisburg; to showcase, to compete, to interact, intermingle, and have a good time.

It also usually brings bad weather as well. As was apparent Saturday (January 6th) when we did our podcast with Lew Bryson for his “Seen Through a Glass“.

Friday was primarily just the food market and a few other events. The milkshakes were out, the talk of all the land, as always, and there was also free parking Friday so the food court was absolutely jammed pack. There was also a rodeo hosted on Friday.

Today – Tuesday, January 9th, they announced the winners of the Beer Competitions.

Farm Show – Best of Beer Awards

The Farm Show introduced the Best of Craft Beer Awards in 2019. This makes it the fourth year of them doing the awards (the awards went virtual in 2020).

You can read the rules for entry here: Department 34 – Beer Awards Rules and Entry Information.

Over the years there has been numerous winners from across the state. In this year’s competition, 44 breweries across 26 Pennsylvania counties submitted 255 beers to be judged, with 32 different breweries placing in the top 3 of these categories.

Let’s get to this year’s winners:

Best in Beer Winners – 2024

First, you can see the full list of entries and winners directly from the Farm Show’s site here: Department 34 – Craft Beer Entries (PDF). The PDF page is a bit confusing and shows all entries, how many points they received, if they are PA Preferred, and if they won a medal. No mention of categories or anything.

I will help you out here and break down the categories (best that I can) and show who won what place, and will list if it’s PA Preferred (more on what that is afterwards).

For a full list of all Farm Show competitions, and winners, you can view their Results page here: 108th Annual Farm Show Results.

PA Preferred

PA Preferred is a big deal, but even a bigger deal around Farm Show time. The breweries and brewers who do it make a big mention of it and a big “to – do” about it. The point of it is to use all Pennsylvania products, from the malt and grain to the hops and to the water and everything else in between. There is becoming more and more of a bigger push to go “all Pennsylvanian” with breweries. Troegs Brewing, Wallenpaupack Brewing, Logyard Brewing, Boneshire Brew Works, Hemauer Brewing, and several others are striving to make more and more of their beers this way.

We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

The North American Guild of Beer Writers also wanted to celebrate, showcase, and endorse some of the newest writers in the field. The following list is those that they wanted to recognize:

Ashley Joanna

Melanie Epp

William Costa

Jessica Infante

Stephanie Shuttleworth

Ray Ricky Rivera

Andrew Sanders

Noelle Phillips

Jemma Beedie

North American Guild of Beer Writers

The North American Guild of Beer Writers is the preeminent guild for writers about craft beer (and the beer industry). You can find out more about them here – at their homepage:

This year for their awards they had “about” 250 entries submitted across 14 different genres, from all over the world. The Beer Thrillers are a member of the Guild but we did not submit any writings this year. We are looking to do so in 2023 (and had honestly meant to submit some this year, but a lot of real life time issues popped up around the time). But here is looking to 2023 when we hopefully will get something submitted – and who knows; possibly even win!

Cheers and congratulations to all the winners announced this year!

Allusion Brewing Company Wins Two Top Awards https://thebeerthrillers.com/2022/05/05/allusion-brewing-company-wins-two-top-awards/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=allusion-brewing-company-wins-two-top-awards Thu, 05 May 2022 20:30:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=9216

Craft Beer Conference Awards

At the annual Craft Beer Conference (in Minneapolis, Minnesota this year), held over the past few days; Allusion Brewing Company received two awards. Both in “Craft Beer Marketing”. They won their awards for “Best Tap Handle” in the US and “Best Flight Display” in the US.

These are two big awards for the small brewery out of Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. Receiving any award is always a great moment for any brewery, but being recognized at the Craft Beer Conference and winning a national award (and top place) is especially huge for the small hometown brewery.

The Awards

Much like the Great American Beer Fest, the World Beer Cup, and many others – the Craft Beer Conference has their own award ceremony where they announce winners in several different categories on a whole host of things.

Their first award was for “Best Flight Display” in the US. They have a very cool flight board, which are pull out drawers from an old library’s card catalog cabinet. They use the cabinet to keep track of the flights that are out. You can see the flight below:

Their second award they have won was for “Best Tap Handle” in the US. I didn’t have a good picture of their tap handles, but found a picture of their bar background from TribLive back in 2020 (October 9th, 2020) when they were opening. You can see the tap handles in the background of it:

Allusion Brewing Company

I got to stop out at Allusion Brewing Company in November of 2020 when I was taking my trip out to Indianapolis and back. It was early in the day so the place wasn’t full yet (actually I was the only person there at the time, they had just opened), but it was a really lovely building and brewery. The beers were great. And if you are ever in the outskirts of Pittsburgh you definitely should stop in.

For more information on my trip there, you can check out these articles:

You can find them on Google Maps here: Allusion Brewing Company.

From Untappd, they are listed as a microbrewery from Vandergrift, PA. With 40 unique beers and 2,686 ratings. Their global average rating is 3.83. Their Untappd description reads: “Vandergrift’s hometown brewery, offering a consistent library of approachable beers taking the tradition of each style seriously. Craft beer is about bringing people together – come join our story.”

Allusion Brewing Company’s Announcement

The following is their Facebook and social media announcement about winning the awards:

The North American Guild of Beer Writers

What is the North American Guild of Beer Writers you might ask? Quite possibly you’ve never heard of them, even if you do read several beer blogs on the internet. So what exactly are they? Are they a shadowy underworld movement similar to the Illuminati? Are they like the Free Masons of beer? Or are they similar to the Stonecutters?

Well, I’ll let them explain in their own words (from their website):

The North American Guild of Beer Writers (NAGBW) is the leading member organization of beer writers, authors, reporters, and podcasters who cover the beer industry.

Some of us do it for fun, others make a living, or at least a portion of it, covering beer and brewing. We tirelessly cover the brewing industry and those who appreciate beer.

We are a group dedicated to elevating the level of our craft as we cover the art of brewing. We are serious in our purpose, but strive to enjoy ourselves in doing our jobs.

….

We host annual awards that highlight the accomplishments of our members. We also support the annual Diversity in Beer Writing Grant, with a goal to highlight the value of stories that can showcase diversity and inclusion – in all its forms and challenges – within beer.

North American Guild of Beer Writers – Home – North American Guild of Beer Writers Homepage

So thats the basis in a nutshell.

Every year they have an awards event a little bit after the Great American Beer Festival where they announce that year’s awards and winners for various writing and articles of the year. The selection timeframe is July through August and they announce the winners late September.

You can read the 2020 winners here: 2020 NAGBW Winners. I am not entered in anything for 2021, but will hopefully have some stuff to enter for the 2020 year.

So What Does This Mean

So what all does this mean for The Beer Thrillers? Shrugging… honestly not a whole lot that you all might see. A bit more behind the scenes happens for us here at The Beer Thrillers. Hopefully more notice, coverage, and attention.

We are looking to soon start doing podcasts and videos and much more travels and coverage here on The Beer Thrillers. We are also looking to pick up another writer (or two) and hopefully someone with more digital graphics skills and such, and get the site improved graphically, and with a lot more writing.

So please, if you like what you see, make sure to hit the like button, subscribe and follow our page, and be sure to share with all your friends. We appreciate it!
