Mellow Mink Brewing’s Closing Announcement

Mellow Mink

This. One. Hurts. Some places, some breweries, just become a part of you and part of your craft beer experience, and world, and enjoyment. As we see more and more breweries closing this year, and the upcoming years, some are going to hurt more than others. Each person is different, and each brewery’s closing will affect people differently; but this one really just hurts. Matt and Cole are such wonderful people, who have done a lot for the beer community, have made a tremendous brewery and bar experience, and have been such wonderful people to talk beer with, this absolutely hurts. Like The Alementary and their closing, Mellow Mink Brewery held a very special place in our hearts here at The Beer Thrillers. We just want to go above and beyond to say thank you to all Matt and Cole and have done for the community.

Mellow Mink Brewing is located at 4830 Carlisle Pike in Hampden Township (4830 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050).

Mellow Mink Brewing is a craft brewery located in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, known for its unique and innovative approach to brewing. Founded by Matt Miller and Cole Taylor, Mellow Mink specializes in producing a wide range of craft beers, with a particular focus on sours and barrel-aged brews. The brewery has gained a reputation for its meticulous brewing process and the use of high-quality ingredients, ensuring each beer offers a distinct and memorable flavor profile.

The brewery’s taproom provides a welcoming and stylish environment for patrons to enjoy their beverages. With a sleek and modern design, the taproom offers a comfortable space for beer enthusiasts to gather and savor Mellow Mink’s diverse selection. In addition to its regular lineup, the brewery frequently releases limited-edition and seasonal beers, keeping the menu fresh and exciting for visitors. The taproom also hosts various events, including beer tastings, food pairings, and community gatherings, enhancing the overall experience.

Josh and Ben hanging out with Matt and Cole at Mellow Mink Brewery (January 2020)

When our blog was still new and baby fresh, Matt invited Josh and I out to their brewery to have a behind the scenes tour and get an intimate look at their operation, their beers and their sours, and we had such a wonderful time hanging out with Matt and Cole and spending hour and hour after hour talking about beer to no end. (See: Brewery Visit – Mellow Mink Brewery) I can’t thank Matt and Cole enough for that experience, as we learned so much from it all, and more importantly – just had a wonderful night.

Mellow Mink Brewing is Closing

As more and more breweries are closing, theres a lot of dynamics at play, and a lot of reasons for why they are closing. There is certainly a ‘bubble bursting’ in the craft beer industry, no matter how much some will tell you otherwise. And there is so many reasons and things that go into what makes a brewery great, or what will keep it standing out, and will keep people going back. The loss of Mellow Mink will be a big blow to the Central PA and the Harrisburg area and Harrisburg adjacent beer area.

Here is their announcement posted to social media:

Mellow Mink Brewing’s Closing Announcement

Today, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the upcoming closure of Mellow Mink Brewing. We have cherished the opportunity to serve our fans and community for the past six years. We are deeply proud of the beers and cocktails that we crafted, and the all-inclusive environment that we fostered. We now plan to wind-down brewing and taproom operations and close permanently by the end of August 2024. We hope you will visit us again before we are gone – we will be releasing several small batch and full-scale blends that are currently in the tanks. Thank you all for your love and support over the years!

Mellow Mink Brewing – Facebook Post

The out pouring of support started immediately right after they made their announcement and posts. The love the community has for them clearly shown, sadly, not enough support was given while they were fully in operation.

But, please everyone, lets go and visit them throughout July, and August, until their last day. Lets show Matt and Cole all the support we can while the doors are open — and afterwards. Let them know how much they are loved by the community. How great their sours are, and how much their stouts, and IPAs, kicked butt as well.

I just want to reiterate how much love we have for Matt and Cole and all the staff at Mellow Mink Brewery, and wish the absolute best for all involved in the future and everything they do. Lets all raise a pint to Matt, Cole, the staff of Mellow Mink, and the brewery itself!

(Join us, Josh, Ben, and Amy, as we will be visiting Mellow Mink, Friday – July 5th, after 6PM.)

Broken Chair Brewery Has Announced They Will Be Closing

In more sad news, Broken Chair Brewery – out of West Reading, Pennsylvania; has announced that they will be closing (no later than the end of August 2024). In a heartfelt post on their social media just an hour ago, they announced that as they will be easing into retirement, they have decided to close down the brewery.

Broken Chair Brewery has been a staple of West Reading Pennsylvania since 2017. Located at 424 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611 the small but mighty brewery has been churning out amazing beers since 2017 and has garnered quite a bit of a reputation, love, and community following them. Located on the same street as Pagoda Brewing (formerly known as Chatty Monks Brewing), as well as the recently closed Willow Creek Brewery, and The Barley Mow, and Beer Wall on Penn; they carved out a niche as a wonderful brewery to hit in the city.

Just an hour ago, Broken Chair Brewery made this announcement via their social media:

Dear friends of Broken Chair Brewery,
We are writing to let you know that we have had a tremendous time selling beer and good times in West Reading, but it is time for us to start slowing down and get ready for retirement. Broken Chair Brewery will be closing at the end of August depending on how much beer we have.
This decision was not made lightly. Despite the incredible journey and the many successes we have shared, a recent job promotion in my full time job and actually wanting to start slowing down has made this necessary. The business would need to expand to keep being successful and would need further investment. I just do not have the time and do not want to further invest this close to my retirement. I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has been part of this journey. Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or have only recently discovered our brews, your support has been vital to our story.
I want to thank our dedicated staff which has been with us for several years. Their hard work is what made our brewery. A business is only as strong as its staff, and we had the best. I will miss every one of them.
To our beloved customers, thank you for the enthusiasm and loyalty you have shown. Your appreciation for our craft has been a constant source of motivation. We hope that our paths will cross again in the future, maybe at a beer fest.
To my family who made this dream a reality I want to give my love and sincere thanks. I am not the easiest person to deal with and you rose to that challenge and kept me in line when it needed to be done. I know you are looking forward to other endeavors and rewards in the future.
We invite you all to visit us for one last toast before we close. It would be a joy to share a final round of cheers with the community that has made Broken Chair Brewery more than just a brewery, but a family.
Thank you once again for all the memories and good times. Although we are closing this chapter, the experiences we shared will always be cherished.
Cheers,
Todd, Joan, Dan

More Information on Broken Chair Brewery

The following comes via Untappd.

Broken Chair Brewery is a micro brewery from West Reading, Pennsylvania. They have 88 unique beers and over 16,000 ratings, with a global average rating of 3.67 (as of 6.18.24). Their Untappd description reads: “Broken Chair Brewery, like most small businesses started in a garage. After getting tired of settling for beers that were extreme in taste, flavor and hoppiness we wanted to create beers that everyone could enjoy. We wanted to make a large variety of beers so that everyone could find a beer they could drink. It took a lot of trial and error and sometimes pouring the beer down the drain until we had beers that we liked. After years of brewing we decided to take our beer to the next level. It took several months to find a place to do this. We knew we wanted to be in West Reading because it is welcoming to small businesses and the community around Penn Avenue is also very supportive. The community is friendly and wiling to get involved in their neighborhood. The tasting room is all brick that we found under a layer of stucco. This was a wonderful surprise that allowed us to keep the patch work tile floor that was there from the tile shop that was previously in the building. The environment is warm and relaxing. When you walk to the back you can see the brewery through a glass paneled door. The brewery is all stainless steel with a small 2 BBL brewing system. This small brewing system allows us to make a variety of different beers and the ability to rotate different beers when one has kicked.

The Lancaster Craft Beerfest is Returning August 2024

Finally returning for the first time since COVID (since 2019, postponed in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023), the Lancaster Craft Beerfest is set to return this August 2024. In a time when some brewfests are closing up (Mount Hope Renaissance Faire Brewfest Ending) and many more are downsizing, its nice to see this one return.

Maybe we will start to see a resurgence of brewfests. Maybe even the Mt. Hope Ren Faire one will come back next year. In just two weeks time there will be the Hoppy Valley Brewfest in Beaver Stadium, State College, PA. There has been a lot of talk the past two years about how brewfests and big beer events were on the decline, mainly pointing out the Great American Beer Fest (GABF) and similarly sized events and in general just how much the world has changed since 2020 and COVID-19.

Announcement

BEERFEST IS BACK! The Lancaster Craft Beerfest is returning on Saturday, August 24, 2024. After a hiatus that began in 2020, we are returning to the City of Lancaster with your favorite local & regional breweries. It’s time to toast once again–and celebrate the eighth year of Lancaster’s favorite beer festival. Tickets will go on sale mid-May. Learn more at www.lancastercraftbeerfest.com
