The Battle of the Breweries (2024): Preliminary Qualifiers https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/02/26/the-battle-of-the-breweries-2024-preliminary-qualifiers/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-battle-of-the-breweries-2024-preliminary-qualifiers Mon, 26 Feb 2024 13:58:56 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=14463

The Preliminary Qualifiers

The Battle of the Breweries – 2024

Lets get this thing started! Its time to RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

The 2024 Battle of the Breweries is officially kicking off —– NOW — with the preliminary qualifiers. Each of the four conferences: Bravo, Crystal, Fuggle, and Galaxy, are hosting a single fatal four-way “win and you’re in” match. These are sixteen breweries that we have not been to yet, and will be traveling to and visiting in 2024 (or at the latest – early 2025). The winner of each of the four fatal four-ways will be added as the 32nd seed to their respective conference. (ie. winner of the Bravo fatal four way will become the 32nd seed in the Bravo conference, etc.)

The Battle of the Breweries (2024) is set up with four conferences of 32 (counting the “win and you’re in” brewery) for a total of 128 breweries in the main tournament (140 participating breweries in total). They will compete in single elimination rounds (Best of 32, Best of 16, Best of 8, Final Four, Finals) for each conference, before each conference will send their winner to the “Finals Fatal Four-Way” to determine the winner of this year’s Battle of the Breweries.

Breweries will be competing from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Arizona, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.

You can see our previous topics about the tournament for this year here:

We encourage you to go onto social media and share this post, as well as to follow our Facebook, Instagram, and other pages to stay up to date on the tournament. You can vote once per day for each conference’s blocks (once we’re in the main tournament, each conference will have their own distinct article). So to better your favorite (or your own personal) brewery’s chances of winning – we highly recommend sharing and letting all of your friends and family (and even your enemies) know to vote for you.

You can follow along with us on Facebook and Instagram.

The Rules

There’s gotta be some kind of rules to this madness right? This madness of March (and well, this year the end of February as well… and yes… also a bit of April as the tournament goes into that month as well). So… what are the rules involved?

To pull straight from the initial March Madness / Battle of the Breweries post:

So how’s this going to work? Who all is invited? What all breweries are going to be in it? How many breweries? How’s voting going to work? Who decides whose in and whose out? Whats the seeding? Why is Rick such a jerk to Morty? Why is Jurassic Bark the saddest episode of Futurama ever?  Why is the sky blue?

Ok…. enough with the questions!

March Madness (2021) – The Battle of the Breweries (2021)

Breweries are selected from breweries that have been visited by The Beer Thrillers staff.

Voting Rules

Each day you will be able to come to the site to make your votes in the polls. It will be set-up by IPS, so it limits you to voting just once per day per vote. You can vote as many times as you want per round, but only once per day.

Rounds will be one week (ending on Sunday nights at 11:59:59 PM EST) and the new week of voting starting up the next day (Monday) when I get the articles posted (usually around 8:30 – 9:30 AM EST).

Voting will typically be a week long, but the scheduling might be a bit in-flux, stay tuned to the follow up Preliminary Qualifiers post, which will spell out the scheduling a bit better. I prefer to have the rounds last Monday – Sunday for ease. The preliminary qualifiers will end on Thursday (February 29th), and  the tournament will start on a Friday (March 1st). So most likely the opening round will just have a few extra days of voting.

Schedule of Rounds

  • Preliminary Qualifiers: February 26th – February 29th
  • Round of 32: March 1st – March 10th
  • Round of 16: March 11th – March 17th
  • Round of 8: March 18th – March 24th
  • Round of 4: March 25th – March 31st
  • Conference Finals: April 1st – 7th
  • Finals Fatal Four-Way: April 8th – April 14th

VOTE HERE

Lets do this! Enough with the fine print, and the rules, and the boring stuff. Lets get to voting! Here you go, here’s where you get to vote for the Preliminary Qualifiers. The fatal four-way “Win And You’re In” match-ups. There are four fatal four-ways, one for each conference. You may only pick one brewery from each fatal four-way.

Good luck to your favorite breweries in the tournament! Share and tell your friends to help your favorite breweries get more votes!

You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

The Battle of the Breweries (2024)

The Battle of the Breweries

Its time for our annual Battle of the Breweries to commence. We started doing this tournament back in 2021, continued it in 2022, and 2023, and now in 2024 we are once again hosting “The Battle of the Breweries”. Each year we have done things a bit differently. We started off small in 2021, ramped up the numbers in 2022, and in 2023 we had the opening stage being a “Group Stage” similar to the World Cup. For 2024 we are going to host a fatal four-way “win and your in” preliminary qualifier.

For previous articles, click here:

What Breweries Will be in the Tournament?

The only qualifying rule for a brewery to be in the tournament is it has to be a brewery that we – The Beer Thrillers – have visited and had a beer in. Thats it. Out of all of the breweries that we have visited, we will winnow the list down to four conferences of 32 each (so 128 total breweries). Here’s this year’s catch though – the final spot (the winner of the preliminary fatal four-ways) will be a brewery that we have not visited. So 31 breweries from each conference will be a brewery that we have visited, and the final spot in each conference will go to a brewery that we are planning on visiting in 2024 or at worst 2025 (time dependent).

So we take a look at all of the breweries we’ve visited, and we winnow that list down to 124 breweries that we have visited. And then we picked 16 breweries that we are hoping to visit this year or at worst next year, and thus your tournament is born for 2024!

Past Champions

In 2021 we had 48 breweries compete to determine our first inaugural champion. Instead of doing a 64 competitor tournament or 32, we decided to do a crazy thing like pick 48, which resulted in a Triple Threat to determine the winner.

The initial tournament finals consisted of The Isle of Que Brewing vs. Rubber Soul Brewing Company vs. Troegs Independent Craft Brewing Company.

The Isle of Que Brewing emerged victorious.

In our second tournament, we decided we would raise the stakes a bit. Instead of going from 48 to 64 – which would be the logical conclusion – we decided instead to go all the way to 128 competitors. Four conferences of 32 breweries each divided into divisions of 16 (two divisions per conference). Its like I thought we were the NFL or MLB or something.

At the very end we had the four conferences face off in a fatal four – way match up, that saw Von C Brewing vs. Bunnyman Brewing Company vs. Axemann Brewery.

Von C Brewing company emerged victorious from the fatal four – way with barely scraping by Bunnyman Brewing Company in a very close and hard fought battle. (Both breweries amassed over 3,000 votes!)

You can read about the winners here:

In 2023, Allusion Brewing Company won the tournament. We even had an appreciation party at their brewery later in the year – Allusion Appreciation Party.

Champion Banners

Battle of the Brewery Winners

So who will win 2024 and get to hoist their banner up alongside these breweries? Vote and find out!

Preliminary Round

The Preliminary Round will start Monday – February 26th, at 8:00 AM EST. Voting will run until Thursday – February 29th, ending at 11:59:59PM EST. (All times are always EST.) The winners will then be inserted into the conference brackets as #32 for each conference.

The sixteen teams that will compete in fatal four-ways for each conference are:

  1. Pilger Ruh Brewing
  2. Second Sin Brewing
  3. Vortex Brewing
  4. Bierhaus Brew Hall
  5. BruDaddy Brewing
  6. Gift Horse Brewing
  7. Wallenpaupack Brewing
  8. Rising River Brewing
  9. Retriever Brewery
  10. Stone Silo Brewing Company
  11. RAK Brewing
  12. Lost Tavern Brewing
  13. Sunset Hill Brewery
  14. Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company
  15. Great Barn Brewhouse
  16. Brew Gentlemen

Note, this is not the order of the fatal fourways. I will post that on Monday (February 26th) morning.

Why is it also B. Kline’s favorite episode? What does that say about him? Why is the sky blue?

Ok…. enough with the questions!

March Madness (2021) – The Battle of the Breweries (2021)

Breweries are selected from breweries that have been visited by B. Kline, A. Wolfe, Scarlet, Leela, J. Doncevic, and/or Paul Kan.

Voting

Each day you will be able to come to the site to make your votes in the polls. It will be set-up by IPS, so it limits you to voting just once per day per vote. You can vote as many times as you want per round, but only once per day.

Rounds will be last one week (ending on Sunday nights at 11:59:59 PM EST) and the new week of voting starting up the next day (Monday) when I get the articles posted (usually around 8:30 – 9:30 AM EST).

Voting will typically be a week long, but the scheduling might be a bit in-flux, stay tuned to the follow up Preliminary Qualifiers post, which will spell out the scheduling a bit better. I prefer to have the rounds last Monday – Sunday for ease. The opening qualifiers will end on a Thursday, and  the tournament will start on a Friday. So most likely the opening round will just have a few extra days of voting.

The Tournament

Each round is single elimination. The articles will go up Monday morning for each conference (named after a hop variety), and you will go through the rounds voting for all of the different conferences. Each conference will have its own article each week, and it will be one large voting block for each conference on the article. You will go through, make your picks, and then the breweries will advance (or not) based on voting. First round is 32, second round is 16, third round is 8, fourth round is 4, then we get down to two from each conference, and then finally a conference winner will go on to the main finals – a fatal four way to decide the ultimate winner! The winner of each conference will face off in a fatal fourway to decide the ultimate Battle of the Breweries winner!

So it will be a total of 7 rounds (5 conference rounds, then the ultimate finals round, as well as one round of Preliminary Qualifiers). So the tournament will last all of March and into a bit of April.

This is usually a lot of fun for all the breweries involved, as well as everyone involved. But it is also a lot of work on our end (namely – my end), as I will be doing all the work, keeping track of things, trying to keep things coherent and good, as well as write the articles, code things up, set things up, etc, all while working my day job. So please be patient, gentle, and kind. But most importantly — HAVE FUN!

This is a large undertaking, and will involve breweries from several states. From Pennsylvania to New York to New Jersey to Indiana, and all areas in between. It will consist of probably something like 8+ states, as well as the District of Columbia. So this is a big competition and a big chance for a brewery. But lets keep it fun, and make sure everyone has fun as well! I look forward to this event every year, and can’t wait to crown a 2024 Battle of the Breweries Champion!

Von C Brewing Company

VON C BREWING COMPANY out of Norristown, Pennsylvania!

Congratulations Von C Brewing and all of the brewers, staff, workers, and fans who helped vote, share, and come to the blog.

Thank You

First, I’d like to give a big shout out to everyone! I mean – absolutely everyone! From all the different breweries, staff, workers, fans, and readers of the blog. You have made this a tremendous success. The tournament this year totally blew away the tournament last year, both in volume of results, number of breweries involved, in shares, likes, comments, in clicks and views and visitors to the blog, to every possible metric I could use. Wow. I just want to say thank you to everyone.

Which leads me to the next point….

Blog Crashing

For the first time in the history of the tournament – and in the blog itself – the site has crashed due to amount of people visiting it. This is one of those “bad good things”. Its bad that its crashed, and I apologize to all those who were attempting to vote and it was down. (Difficulties with the host being a weekend, and it being a holiday weekend meant slower times getting them to respond, and literally had me on the phone waiting for over an hour.)

So needless to say, I was disappointed with the crash and the downtime, but was grateful for what that meant – so many visitors to the site! So congratulations to everyone who was able to crash the site (haha…..)!

Quick Recap

I’m going to do a quick recap of the finals and announce the winner with this article. And then do a full, big, recap, award ceremony, finals, whatever you want to call it on Monday.

Due to the downtime, I had extended the tournament until this morning ending it effectively at noon (11:59AM EST) (so technically – morning). With having to do some mowing, and family obligations (my sister was throwing my nephew’s 7th birthday party), things got a bit wonky for the day, and I didn’t quite complete things like I wanted. (Tried to get this recap article done by 2PM… started it… but didn’t get a chance to finish it until now.)

So enough rambling, lets get to the recap.

Lead Up

Coming into the finals fatal four-way, we had a winner from each conference. And those winners were:

  • Brock Lesnar Conference: Axemann Brewery
  • Roman Reigns Conference: Von C Brewing
  • Ronda Rousey Conference: Gearhouse Brewing
  • Charlotte Flair Conference: Bunnyman Brewing

All four breweries did a tremendous job to get to the finals. Each conference was 32 breweries (for a grand total of 128 breweries). Meaning just to get to the finals, each brewery beat out 31 other breweries. That’s no small feat.

Results

Like true pro wrestling, in a fatal four-way they often do it as an “elimination match”, meaning one wrestler after another is eliminated until you have the winner. Technically, we didn’t do eliminations in the voting, but for the results here, I am going to list the breweries in order of their “elimination” (or placing).

  • Eliminated first: Gearhouse Brewing (429 votes) (4th place)
  • Eliminated second: Axemann Brewery (682 votes) (3rd place)
  • Last elimination: Bunnyman Brewing (3582 votes) (2nd place)

Winner: Von C Brewing (3824 votes) (1st place)

For a total of: 8517 votes. That is an amazing total number of votes!

The breakdown for voting percentages goes:

  • Gearhouse Brewing (429 / 8517 votes) – 5.04%
  • Axemann Brewery (682 / 8517 votes) – 8.03%
  • Bunnyman Brewing (3582 / 8517 votes) – 42.05%
  • Von C Brewing (3824 / 8517 votes) – 44.89%

It was extremely close Thursday, Friday, and the bonus Saturday time between Bunnyman Brewing and Von C Brewing. It was anybody’s ballgame / race / competition / brewing duel to the death.

But once again, I want to congratulate Von C Brewing as being the champion!

Thank You Everyone

Just to reiterate, thank you everyone for visiting, voting, sharing, liking, commenting, and discussing the 2nd Battle of the Breweries. Look out for the full results on Monday, where I’ll break down the full tournament. (It will most likely get posted after I come home from work Monday, so later in the evening, around 8-10PM…. possibly Tuesday morning.)

Again, congratulations to all four final breweries. They all did amazing in the tournament. Especially Bunnyman Brewing and Von C Brewing, putting up some amazing numbers. And obviously, huge congrats go to Von C for winning it! They now will live on in the annals of the Battle of Breweries here on The Beer Thrillers, as being the second ever champion! (First champion was The Isle of Que Brewing).

For some related articles, you can check out last year’s two result pages:

This year’s results page, and the voting page:

Thanks for voting everyone!

Thanks For Reading

Check Monday for the full results page! Thanks for reading everyone! Lots of fun articles in the future, so make sure you keep coming back! Thanks for making this such a great and fun tournament!

Cheers Everyone!
