Tickets to the Harisburg Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy sounded like a perfect date night with the blog master. We really had no idea what to expect. I was just excited that the Harrisburg area was getting a pop-up experience.

The email confirmation advised us to “dress in your most ravishing cocktail party attire.” I worked all week and we have a 2 year old toddler, you’ll be lucky if I wear pants! But I decided on a nice sweater and some makeup should pass.

On the way to the speakeasy we reminisced about visiting the Edgar Allan Poe Museum on the Viginia Trip (refer VA stuff here) Then we compared the drinks listed on the website so what readings we thought they would be paired with. We guessed The Tell – Tale Heart and The Raven; two of the most famous Poe writings. It was hard to guess 2 more, maybe The Fall of the House of Usher and The Cask of Amontillado.

A Review of The Edger Allan Poe Speakeasy

We arrived at the Civic Club of Harrisburg off Front Street. I knew parking would be a pain and I circled the block twice hoping to find some street parking. There were cars parked in spots that definitely were going to get ticketed as we saw a meter maid making their rounds. I saw a few folks parking in the small lot and unfortunately had to walk in a bit of mud to get into the mansion.

The setting of the Civic Club building, built in the early 1900s, added to the atmosphere setting up the evening. We waited in the downstairs area with a group of people. We then had our tickets scanned one at a time and ushered up a flight of stairs. One snaffoo, we had bought the 10pm showing tickets and not the 8pm that we showed up for. I was so embarrassed, mom brain was at it’s worst. The 2 cast members scanning tickets were so gracious and insisted they could still accommodate us.

As soon as your ticket was scanned you were handed your first drink on your way up the stairs. The Pale Blue Eye – A classic twist on a Traditional Collins. According to the menu on site is a “citrus and blueberry infused vodka, fresh squeezed lemon juice, and simple syrup. Topped with a pale blueberry eye.

Entering the Grand Ballroom on the second floor we are greeted by a stage and rows of chairs. I quickly felt like I was in entering a high school assembly and quickly took my seat as people kept entering behind us. I checked before we got here and all the tickets were sold out, so this showing had +2 as well because of our timing goof.

The Drinks

The website and the drink menu at the location had 2 different descriptions for the drinks. That was fine since they were all great, but it was just a little confusing. Thankfully a friend took a pic of the menu at the location (see photo to the left of Jesse’s picture of the menu at the venue). The lemon drink with an “eye” in it (it was really an unripe blueberry floating around) really tasted like minute maid lemonade mix to me. When we entered the room it was light enough to see but the lights were a shade of purple.

After everyone was seated the lights turned red and the MC for the evening who did the introductions and the dialog between readings was young, vibrant and playful. She made some funny jokes and some around us were pre – gaming before this event. Which added to the lightheartedness of the evening. Overall providing a greater environment and theme to the proceedings.

There were lots of different interpretations on the attire recommendations. Some folks were playing the part of dressing for the occasion in some “old timey” looking outfits. One gentleman, who was sitting in front us wearing a bowler hat apologized immediately and assured us he wouldn’t be wearing it during the show. As the show started, he put on a beret hat.

After our playful MC introduced herself and set the “stage” for the evening the first actor came out onto the stage. The lights were red, and it created an ambiance about the room. The first reading was an abridged version of the Tell-tale heart. The actor has a sinister laugh about him and seemed to captivate the audience. I couldn’t help myself. I mean the tone of the room was still lighthearted, here to have fun type of crowd. I kept visualizing in my mind the Tell-tale heart episode of The Simpsons

We had our drinks finished before the end of the reading. It was then I was hoping for cocktail like tables in the room. I didn’t feel like sitting there in a seat, school assembly style, holding my drink. The first reading was over, and the actors went up and down the rows of seating with busboys trays and collected the cups. I was at the end of my row, so I was responsible for grabbing and passing everyone’s cups. This first round was easy.

Shortly after another set of actors were going down the rows with large trays filled with the next drink. The name that was given was different than I remembered from the website. It wasn’t until after I saw my friend Jess post the drink menu did, I realize they were different.

The Show Goes On

They were handing out “The Cat’s Meow” – A twisted version of Poe’s favorite brandy milk punch. The menu describes it as “Aged bourbon meets with fruity brandy, accompanied by vanilla cinnamon milk, sweet cream and maple syrup.” This one was delicious.

We should have figured this one might be a reading. There were two black cats at the Poe Museum when we visited (in Richmond, Virginia – see our Instagram Post here) as well as many references in the museum about The Black cat.

The friendly MC came out to introduce the next reading but without giving any hints away, I think we already knew it would be the black cat because of the drink’s name. The lights in the room changed to blue and a different actor came out and gave an abridged version. He also gave a great reading. He moved up and down the aisles, feeling a bit more interactive with the crowd.

We were finishing our drink, we both enjoyed it very much, as the reading was ending. Before I knew it I had all the empty cups and I was ready for the busboy tray to collect our used cups.

The next drink was the Nevermore -Quoth the Raven, Drink-some-more! It is described as Fresh lime juice, peach and orange blossom infused vodka, simple syrup, and crushed charcoal. Topped with a dehydrated lime. We knew this reading would happen. Our top 2 guesses were Tell-tale heart and The Raven.

The actress for this abridged version of the Raven was portrayed by our cocktail waitress. By this 3rd reading you are feeling like you are hanging out with a bunch of friends; you have just passed drinks back and collected empty cups and you are being entertained. Every single person took on multiple roles in the staffing of the Edgar Allan Poe speakeasy pop up were friendly, joyful and entertaining.

This reading was done before we were done with our drinks, and the busboy trays were coming down the aisle. Like I said about not wanting to be stuck holding my cup, I quickly downed what I had left of my drink. Not everyone in my row was as daring to swish it down and then you are stuck with cups under seats.

The next drink was Cocktail of Red Death – Our Spirited Nightcap is to Die For. It is described as Fresh squeezed seasonal fruits, raspberry infused vodka, cranberry juice, 100 proof vodka and fresh lime juice. This was tasty but I was unsure about the dried flower looking thing floating in it.

This masque of the red death happens to be one of our guesses. A different actor comes out onto the stage wearing a mask and you guessed it, the lights turned red. This actor did another excellent portrayal while wearing a large mask. The MC wrapped us up for the evening, encouraged tipping and escorted us out and down the stairs. Thank goodness you dropped off your empty cup on your way out the door and I didn’t have any other responsibilities for the evening.

We ran into some friends outside, and we quickly departed as attendees of the last show of the evening were starting to pile in.

At first, I thought this would be a once and done type of experience but now that we are about a month out, I’d attend another Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy Pop Up.

(Editor’s Notes: This article is long overdue to come out. Every time we tried to get it posted, things went awry. First, us getting terribly sick at the beginning of February, then life being busy with me getting a new job, Scarlet starting daycare, and then our trip to the Kennett Brewfest. But here it is, and yes, it is a large article, coming in at nearly 3000 words all told — I think with my editor’s note it will hit over 3000. We debated about splitting it up into two articles, but decided it was best just to leave it as is. We can always change it in the future if people think that would be best. I will add my two cents that we both really enjoyed the show. The readings were interesting, they were new and ‘updated’ versions of the stories, shortened and changed to fit more of our time than anything else. The drinks were good, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the Milk Brandy Punch, especially because I don’t like milk. It was full and sold out for every showing, and we ran into several people we knew, like Gabe and his wife, Amy’s friend Jesse and their friends, and several others. Everyone seemed to have a good time coming out of the show and afterwards, as well as during it. They are touring and doing lots of shows. It was funny how it popped up on our Facebook feeds right as the time we suggested it to each other, so it made for a great date night and escape from work and stress. The night was dreary and rainy and fit the mood and vibe perfectly, and along the riverfront it added all to the atmosphere. If you are able to see them out, I would highly recommend it.)

It’s Pumpkin Time!

So…. a couple leaves have changed color on the tree in our front yard.  So…. it’s technically not too early, right?  I can talk about pumpkin spice now?  They were the first ones I saw in the store and I had to grab a couple for me and Grandma SueAnn to enjoy.   (See: A Beer Review by Grandma SueAnn [Beer Review: Braaaiins! by Spring House Brewing Company].)

We were shopping at the local Weiss and I saw it on an end-cap and I had to have it.  Braaaiins by Spring House Brewing Company.  I grabbed the 4pack with the approving nod from the boyfriend.  I could hardly wait long enough for them to chill.  Grandma SueAnn was in agreement; kicking our pumpkin beer drinking season off with a loved classic was the way to go. The first pumpkin beer of the year, near end of August, and I had to grab it!

Braaaiins! by Spring House Brewing

Once chilled this pumpkin ale is the perfect beer to kick off Autumn with.  It is described on Untapped as “our pumpkin ale is brewed with generous amounts of real pumpkin blended into the mash.  The subtle fresh pumpkin flavor is enhanced by the addition of a touch of traditional autumn spices and sweet dough, thus creating a beer with an orange amber color, warm pumpkin aroma, a bold malt center and a crisp finish.  We are proud to offer you a balanced and delectable fall treat.  Suitable for zombies.”  It has an 8.5% ABV so I isn’t anything to mess around with.  It has an overall rating on Untapped of 3.70.

Zombies are People Too by New Trail Brewing

On another occasion we swung into West Connection Beer Vault in Hummelstown (find West Connection Beer Vault on Facebook).  Amongst the mix of six we picked out were two from New Trail Brewing. (We also scored a fantastic Barleywine by 3 Floyds Brewing – Pillar of Beasts. See Ben’s beer review of that here: Beer Review: Pillar of Beasts by 3 Floyds Brewing.)

Zombies Are People Too and Double Zombies, two pumpkin beers from the mid – Central PA brewery up in Williamsport. They clock in at a 5.7%ABV and an 8.5% ABV respectively. My first instinct was to see if Grandma SueAnn could tell the difference between the two New Trail pumpkin beers. (Because who better to try out new pumpkin beers with than Grandma SueAnn?) Yes, the Double Zombies has a higher ABV but Double Zombies is also supposed to be packed with, according to Untapped “twice the strength, maple syrup, vanilla, and pumpkin spice.”  Grandma SueAnn thought she tasted just a bit more spice to Double Zombies but she happily helped me drink both pumpkin beers.

Overall though we enjoyed both of the New Trail pumpkin options. In the mid-state (Harrisburg area) you can find them at your different beer distributors and bottle shops like Breski’s Beverages, West Connection Beer Vault, Brass Rail, Bradford Village Beer and Soda, as well as at your grocery stores like Wegmans, Weiss, and Giant. You might even be able to find them in some gas stations like Rutters, WaWa, or Sheetz. So be on the lookout and the hunt!

A look back in the brewhouse at Lindgren Craft Brewery

Did you miss me as much as I missed you?

This whole mom thing IS NOT EASY.  I admit, I am struggling at times.  How are we supposed to juggle full time careers, kids, chores around the house…..I mean at that point forget about having any sort of social life.  I am struggling to find that balance.  So, I asked my Boo (Ben) to plan a date night.  I just need some adult alone time.

This may have come as a shocker, but we went to a brewery! LOL! Juggling our schedules and Scarlet make it very hard to find an evening to go out together.  To say I was excited for an evening at a brewery felt like an understatement.  Maybe the excitement was a bit much since I pretty much drove right past Lindgren Craft Brewery!  It is inside old Duncannon National Bank, and it feels so niche and cool.

A Look at Lindgren Craft Brewery

According to PerryCountyHeritageTrail.com the bank was built in 1889.

This was the first building in Perry County to be devoted exclusively to banking.  Before the Duncannon National Bank, the safe at the Duncannon Iron Works was used to protect large sums of money.  Currency was dispatched from banks in Harrisburg and Carlisle as needed.  It was common for merchants and businesses to act as banks and lenders before banks become more common in the 20th century.

If you aren’t careful, you will get lost in the Lindgren tap list.  It was tough to pick out that first pint.  The variety of styles and flavors is not something all breweries can encapsulate but Lindgren certainly held our attention.

I mean it had been a minute since we got out; but I started out heavy with the “To Infinity and Beyond”, a porter brewed with 86 pounds of Milky Way Bars and 23 pounds of cocoa nibs, and it was served on Nitro.  I was drooling just thinking about it, so I went all in.  Ben got the Diane & Ross…No Supremes, a black Kolsch.  Both were amazing!

The Kolsch was deceiving because in Kolsch fashion it was light and refreshing but it was a black Kolsch.  You still got some dark and roasty flavors.  It was brewed with additions of Carafa malt for color.  The Porter was dark and delicious, everything you expect from a well brewed porter and.  I thought at first, I might be overloaded with the milky way flavor, but the sweetness was perfectly balanced out with the full bodied roastyness of the porter.

We had to get some food to go along with the delicious brews (Duncannon Ghost Kitchen Food Menu). The Duncannon Ghost Kitchen run by the Old Trail Tavern & Steak is nestled inside the brewery as a separate business but they definitely blend well together (Lindgren Craft Brewery and Duncannon Ghost Kitchen Partnership). We nibbled on the Bavarian Pretzel Flight and the classic Cheeseburger.  Do Not think these are your typical brewery food staples, although I hope these will be for Lindgren, The Bavarian pretzel flight wasn’t your typical giant pretzel put on display as a peacocking type of appetizer.  They were pretzel bites tossed in some sort of yummy seasoning.  Perfect to toss into your mouth with some beer as you are enjoying the evening. We decided to order a flight next and try some more styles.  We picked out 4 easily with Taking Selfies with Turkeys Blonde/Golden Ale, I love Mary Jane IPA, Rebels of the Sacred Heart Red Ale and Of Lords and Ladies a Mild Dark.  From the refreshing spark of the Blonde to the caramelly and gentle bitter from the Mild they all went down easily and great with the food we were sharing.

We had fun checking out the old bank vault where they house the drawers for the Keyholders membership.  You even track your monthly membership pour with a draft card kept in your drawer in the safe.  That is also where they sell their merchandise.

After we got done eating, Mike Lindgren stopped by again (we ran into him just as we were originally sitting down), and invited us along back with Sean and Mark from Liquid Noise Brewing Company (who won our 2024 Battle of the Breweries Tournament).

I’ll be the first to admit I don’t know much about the brewing process.  All I know is I’m a chick that likes drinking good quality craft beer.  Listening to Mike and the guys from Liquid Noise geek about the craft of brewing beer was still music to my ears.  That’s what I see in a brewery; a favorite community spot with an affliction to taking pride in your craft.  Perhaps I’ll be requesting Liquid Noise for my next date night with my Benjamin. We do need to get together with them on hosting a big bash for them winning this year’s Battle of the Breweries tournament, why not make more of our date nights kill two birds with one stone.

As Lindgren finally gets the chance to settle in we can’t wait to see the brewery grow.  Also, I can’t wait for a sign on the building so maybe I won’t blow by it.

Amy took some fantastic pictures of the Bank Vault inside Lindgren Craft Brewery, where they keep all of the Keyholder Mug Club member stuff as well as their merchandise for sale. She also grabbed some great pics of the brewhouse while Mike showed us around inside there and talked shop. The holidays always bring on a waves of nostalgia for me.  Cooking the Thanksgiving Turkey in Grandma’s roaster and trying our best to mimic her stuffing recipe always makes me smile.  With this feeling it reminded me to finish off my birthday present of the Muppet RAR beers.  I had Part-Ay- Part-Ay, It Wasn’t easy and Kissy Kissy left to celebrate my Birthday and RAR celebrating their 10 year anniversary.

The first grab out of the fridge was the Part-Ay- Part-Ay RAR Brewing.  It is described on Facebook as “Our lactose sour base conditioned over Strawberry, Funfetti Cake, and Pastry Cream.”  It is coming in with a 6% ABV and an overall 4.22 rating on Untapped.  That first sip feels like I got punched in the face with strawberries.  When I realized what character this one was in reference too I practically spit it out with laughter.  This sour beer is a party in your mouth.  It made me second guess there wasn’t more berries in this one and I misread. 

The next grab out of the fridge was the “It Wasn’t Easy” (again by RAR Brewing). And yes, this beer is legit green.  Not the green kind you normally see on St Patrick’s day, but the pastel green version of pink Pepto Bismol. (Almost looked similar to RAR’s “Green Milk“.)  It is described on Facebook as “Our lactose base conditioned over Pineapple juice, Lemon Lime, Coconut, and Pasty Cream.” It comes in with a 6% ABV and a 3.89 overall rating on Untapped.  Alright, alright, alright; I have a little bit of a problem with the Green color.  I have to look away when sipping it.  It reminds me of the purple ketchup that came out in the early 2000s and I couldn’t eat that either.

A few mornings ago, I was desperately searching through the Disney app for something new for Scarlet to watch so I don’t hit that millionth time watch of Encanto anytime soon.  The Muppet Babies was an option to watch.  I quickly remembered these beers again. The flood of memories from always having this as a part of my Saturday AM cartoon watching.   I thought I’d try to introduce it to Scarlet.  I desperately miss the Muppet Babies when I was a kid and I must find a way to watch those with Scarlet. I just know she’ll love them as much as I did growing up. How could she not?

I knew there would be improvement from this gem of technology but am I that old person?

The graphics were so different these looked like entirely new characters and where did Summer come from?  I couldn’t watch much of the newer version of muppet babies and Scarlet was busy tearing apart another part of the living room.  I caved and put Encanto on again while Scarlet came and sat in my lap to watch it with me. 

I saved Kissy Kissy for last.  It is described on Facebook as “Our lactose base conditioned over strawberries, cotton candy, Lemon-Lime and Vanilla Ice Cream.”  It has a 6% ABV and comes in with an overall rating of 4.24 on Untapped.  I was afraid with Kissy Kiss and Part-Ay- Part-Ay both being conditioned over strawberries that they would be similar.  But they are entirely 2 different sour beers.  Kissy Kissy is creamy and light while Part-ay Part-ay, like I said above, punches you in the face with Strawberries. 

My favorite of this series is easily Woka Woka Pie. (See my previous article – RAR Brewing Brings the Nostalgia with Muppets Out of Order Series – for more information.) I loved this series because your girl loves sours and the wave of nostalgia.  I am going to recommend all to watch Emmitt Otter’s jug band Christmas.  I read it was on the Disney app and I intend to introduce this one to Scarlet too.  If you are a Jim Henson fan, you will love it.

We all know we have leftover Halloween candy. Either from buying too much to give away, or from your kids going out and getting it (and you ‘trick or treating’ yourself using their bags while their asleep). Or just using your 11-month old dressed up as an Ewok to get candy that she can’t even eat yet….

….not naming names…

But so, we all have leftover Halloween candy. So lets have some fun and pair it up with some beer!

Amy is here with a mid week hump day column, to give you some beer and candy pairing advice.

Halloween Candy

Admittedly I drink lots of beer and admittedly I have a sweet tooth. Absolutely a beer pairing with the Halloween candy is in order.  I mean, how many pieces of Halloween candy have you gotten into?  Pair it with a beer and let’s enjoy the mixed flavors

So what candy do you have left? 

Candy and Beer Pairings

Let’s break it down by styles and what can pair up with each style.

Stout or Porter

Stout or Porter – Pair it with the peanut butter cups! I’m going to start here because my favorite are the Reese’s peanut butter cups.  Pairing the creamy peanut butter cup with a dark and rich stout or Porter takes you on a flavor rich joyride.

Hefeweizen

Hefeweizen – Pair it with the Twix or anything caramel.  Something about the breadiness of a hefe and the taste of the shortbread and the caramel.  I thought it was still there with most other caramel candies too.

Sour

Sour – Pair it with the Hot Tamales! They still make those, right?  Or an Atomic Fireball.  The sweet and sour from the beer.  Anything spicy pairs perfectly with a good sour beer.

Pilsner

Pilsner – Pair it with the red licorice or anything similar to twizzlers.  Ok don’t laugh but use the twizzler like a straw.  I know, I know, don’t roll your eyes at me.  Try it! That sweet biscuit-like taste of a pilsner meshes perfectly with the sweetness of red or cherry licorice.

Brown Ale

Brown Ale – Pair it with the snickers or anything that has both a sweet and a salty.  The depth of flavor in a brown ale pairs perfectly with the sweet and salty fight going on in your mouth!

Cream Ale

Cream Ale – Ok, hear me out; pair it with Candy Corn.  You need a refreshing cream ale to wash down all the sugar from the candy corn.  I mean, who really eats candy corn?

Within five minutes of arriving at Grandma SueAnn’s house; she smiled and asked if I was ready for pumpkin beer?!

Does a bear sh1t in the woods?  Hell, yes, I want a pumpkin beer!  I almost launched the food and small baby spoon I was using to feed Scarlet with at my Mom’s head.  Instead, I just smiled at her like the wild-eyed maniac that motherhood has turned me into.  She was talking about diving back into the pumpkin beer haul from last Sunday.

(Last week Amy got to spend time with her mom – Grandma SueAnn – and they dived into the first part of their pumpkin beer haul: Pumpkin Beer Review with Grandma SueAnn – Abomination Brewing: Forbidden Pumpkin, Greater Good Brewing: Giant Pumpkin, and Pizza Boy Brewing: Sunny Side Up Double Coffee Pumpkin.)

Diving Back Into the Pumpkin Haul

I let Grandma SueAnn pick the glassware, so go ahead and peep on the cute bear glass.  If you think that is silly just wait until we get to beer #2.  Her pick was the Nightmare on East Elm Street, a pumpkin/yam beer, by Conshohoken Brewing Company.  This is a 6.66% ABV…wait a sec, was that done on purpose?  I see what you did there. 

NEES has an overall untapped rating of 3.64. It is described as “A seasonal homage to our original brewery in Conshohocken, we bring you Nightmare on East Elm Street Pumpkin Ale.  Brewed with honey malt, pumpkin puree, lactose and spices.  Nightmare on East Elm Street is pumpkin pie in a glass.  This autumn ale is best paired with candy corn.”  We both thought that the pumpkin flavor was pretty light and finished as a pilsner.  A few on Untapped agree.  Maybe one of the other flavors mellowed out the pumpkin flavor?  It was a great light beer and went down very smoothly. 

Something Something Pumpkin

Without hesitation Grandmas SueAnn is popping up to pick out the second beer.  Again, I let her pick.  It’s fun to watch her read about the beers and get to know which ones she likes and which ones she doesn’t.  I love that I get to split beers with my mom, watch my daughter play and watch football at the same time. 

That first beer was only a 6.66% ABV but Grandma SueAnn is posing the bears with the beer.  I told you to watch out for the pic of beer #2.  Aren’t they cute? She picked the Something pumpkin by Eight and Sand.  This is a pumpkin/yam beer coming in at 6%.  It is described as “Our pumpkin cream ale treats your taste buds to notes of pumpkin pie crust, warm cinnamon, smooth vanilla, and autumn spices.”  SP has an overall rating on 3.90 on Untapped.

We both agreed Something Pumpkin is nice and light but filled with flavor at the same time.  It has a sweet flavor but not the overly sweet some cream ales can have.  Maybe it should have been classified as a cream ale and not a pumpkin/yam beer.

Some of us pumpkin lovers don’t settle for subtle fall flavors.

Only the best pumpkin, only the most truest of pumpkin flavors for us.

I know you will never believe this, but Grandma SueAnn turned me down to split the 3^rd and final beer of the pumpkin beer stash.  She seemed sleepy as Scarlet was keeping her on her toes.  Don’t worry, we will add more seasonal beers to the stash. 

I’m sure this also won’t be the last time you’ll be seeing Grandma SueAnn reviewing some beers with us here on The Beer Thrillers; so please let us (and by extension her) know if you are enjoying her beer reviews. It feels like it’s been a minute since my girl Kristin of The Perfect Portion had the Enchilada Stuffed Peppers on the menu.  Or maybe I just missed this dish.  With the chilly weather creeping in on Central PA the past few days I almost felt the urge to grab the tropical stout from Troegs Brewing – but I can’t remember the last time I had a Sunshine Pilsner, so I grabbed for that classic from Troegs’.

This meal is a fabulous health conscious version of the rich Enchiladas. For more information on The Perfect Portion see my article: (We Can’t Always Be a Glutton Right? – Perfect Portions and Allusion Brewing Company)  Choosing a Sunshine Pilsner to enjoy alongside this delicious meal was the perfect choice. The lightness of the pilsner definitely gives room for a Tex – Mex dish with flavors aplenty. 

I shared the beer and the meal with my mom while hanging out at her house.  Please peep the smurf glass.  My mom and I both loved the pairing of the meal and the Pilsner.

The Sunshine Pilsner is a regular year round at Troeg’s.  It comes in with a 4.5% ABV.  It is described on Untapped as “It takes the right ingredients, people and processes to nail the complex balance of two-row barley, zesty, saaz hops and lager yeast.  Secondary fermentation creates natural carbonation that delivers soft notes of fresh-cut straw and flowering herbs.  It in the end, this bright and refreshing clean American craft pilsner is our go-to when the sun is shining and makes us happy when the skies are gray.  We taste bright citrus, flowering herbs, honeyed biscuit. “  It has an overall rating of 3.45 out of 75.1k. 

That is a crazy low average.  I looked at the numbers.  The lowest rating come from those checking in doing a tasting of this.  Is this light and smooth pilsner getting a fair shot if it is after a thick stout or a fruity ale?  An example of one of the check ins from a tasting is, it is described as hoppy.  Nowhere is this Pilsner described as hoppy.  Also, since you just earned your newbie badge maybe we should just move on. 

(It appears the majority of the reviews are in error or ones where people don’t understand the beer in question or what they are actually drinking, like the review I screen shotted here to the left.)

But after my delicious combination I finished off the evening with some salted caramel ice cream.  Perfect ending.

(Speaking of Troegs Independent Brewing – we had a wonderful evening there on Thursday as the kick off of their Oktoberfest. Myself, Ben, my mother, and Scarlet enjoyed a wonderful evening out in the beer garden. We got the Bronzeit platter and the Bavarian Pretzel, for beers we had the Scratch 499 Rauchbier, the Scratch 497 Schwarzbier, Scratch 496 Salt and Lime Lager, the Hop Cyclone and the Hop Knife. We had a wonderful time and had amazing food and beer. Then Saturday – yesterday – night, we got to spend the night by the poolside and enjoyed the Bourbon Barrel Aged Triple Nator. Stout Season

It is stout season all year long for me.  I would have tried Troeg’s new tropical stout anyway though.  This stout was brewed for the Barrel and Flow Festival in Pittsburgh and is a collaboration with the Windy Bridges Brew LLC.  Barrel and Flow Festival is a three-day festival held at the Stacks at 3 Crossings in Pittsburgh’s Strip district neighborhood.  It is noted at America’s first Black arts and craft brew festival. 

Barrel and Flow

Barrel and Flow is a three day festival in Pittsburgh, and is one of the premier events of the year. It has been voted the # 1 Brewfest by USA Today readers and fans. The Barrel and Flow Festival is aimed at helping and supporting African Americans. All of the breweries involved are either working in collaboration with an African American owned brewery – or are one themselves.

Can Art

The can art is noteworthy as well.  It sets you up for the mood of this beer.  I think my question to Social Living, as I should have asked other artists before: Did you taste this beer prior to creating the can art?  Artist credit to Social Living.  According to Social Living – “Social Living is a one-person artist-owned brand based in Pittsburgh that provides high-quality, empowering, “counter-culture” style wall art in various forms and artistic clothing with lifestyle goods. Each of the Social Living art pieces is my original design and are printed/produced by me in my studio.”

Beer Review: Tropical Stout

Beer: Tropical Stout

Untappd Description: Our collaboration with Pittsburgh-based @windybridgesbrew is now available! Tropical Stout starts with dark grains and flaked oats, then the island vibes kick in with Sultana and Sabro hops in the kettle. Dry-hopping with Mosaic, El Dorado and Azacca adds aromas of sweet pineapple and stone fruit. Sweet and roasty, this easy-drinking 5.9% ABV stout is destined for tomorrow’s @barrelandflow festival – a celebration of Black breweries, artists and small businesses. We’re loving the artwork by Darrin Jamal of @social.living! According to the Windy Bridges Brew LLC Facebook “Get ready for a tropical experience in a can.” And as noted on the can they are bringing “fruity dimensions to flaked oats and roasted barley for notes of sweet coffee” And somehow these flavors spring out and mesh so well together. 

It comes in on Untapped at a 5.9% ABV with a 3.74 average rating.  It comes at you with a tropical nose but a malty taste.  This is where you start out in the malty and subtle sweet coffee flavor.  It ends with hints of pineapple and coconut.  This stout isn’t the usual stout you drink during stout season.  It is nice and light. 

We just happen to be drinking it as dinner was about finishing up cooking.  So yes, half of it disappeared before the food was plated. The menu for dinner tonight was grilled pork loin, mashed potatoes and broccoli.  It seemed to pair nicely and you could still taste all the layers of this amazing tropical stout. 

Get it Fast

This one is only sold in 16 ounce cans in the taproom and general store at Troeg’s.  I highly doubt this will last very long. (As of 8 PM tonight they were down to less than 12 cases in the general store.)

Dinner

Dinner was grilled pork loin, broccoli from the air fryer, and mashed potatoes. We used some of the Tropical Stout to marinate / grill the pork loin. The stout really helped to bring out the flavors of the pork loin, and really made the meal pop.
