Triple Pineapple Punge by Tired Hands Brewing Co. and breakfast eggs

Happy Mother’s Day

I’m pretty darn lucky.  This is my first Mother’s Day.  I never thought I was going to be celebrating this holiday for myself, but here I sit with a beautiful baby girl.  At first, I felt a bit anxious and nervous for the day, I might have laid in bed and cried a bit while Scarlet was napping.  But thankfully my boyfriend asked what he could do.  I said make me some breakfast!  Please, I mean!

(If you, or someone you know is suffering from post partum depression, or depression in general, please reach out to others. Friends, family, co – workers, colleagues, anyone and everyone. There are numerous organizations you can reach out to as well. Here are two organizations that we suggest:

Please, nobody needs to suffer alone or in the dark. Reach out, seek help, seek people to talk to. There is no shame. Take care of yourself.)

I had scrambled eggs and a TIPA for breakfast.  It made for a perfect First Mother’s Day morning.  The beer and eggs paired very nicely together.  My boyfriend added Worcestershire sauce, taco seasoning and a secret ingredient that added a slightly sweet flavor to some scrambled eggs.  It sounds like a crazy weird combination but it was tasty paired with Tired Hands Triple Pineapple Punge Triple IPA.

Triple Pineapple Punge – Tired Hands Brewing Co.

Triple Pineapple Punge by Tired Hands Brewing Co (Ben decided to off center the picture, my apologies)

Beer: Triple Pineapple Punge
Brewery: Tired Hands Brewing Co.
Style: IPA – Triple
ABV: 8.3%
IBU: N / A
Untappd Description: Triple Pineapple PUNGE is an amped up & blissed out version of our already killer Pineapple Punge variant. Triple Pineapple PUNGE is brewed with our dank & oat-y PUNGE base and hopped with the one-two combo of Nelson Sauvin and Motueka… but the real star of this iteration is the absolutely amoral amount of pineapple. An absurd amount of DRIPPY pineapple went into making one of the most decadent DIPA’s you’ll ever taste. Notes of pineapple rings, beachside Pina Colada and Dole Whip. PUNGE IS PUNGE IS PUNGE =)

Triple Pineapple Punge clocks in on Untapped at a 8.3% ABV. It’s described on Untapped as ‘an amped up & blissed out version of out already killer Pineapple Punge variant. Triple Pineapple PUNGE is brewed with our dank & oat-y PUNGE base and hopped with the one-two combo of Nelson Sauvin and Moteuka…but the real star of this iteration is the absolutely amoral amount of Pineapple. An absurd about of DRIPPY pineapple went into making one of the most decadent DIPA’s you’ll ever taste.” The beer is killer since it starts off as a tasty TIPA with a dank and oat-y taste, to agree with the Untapped description, but then the sweet pineapple taste dances over your tongue to finish.

Mother’s Day Lunch / Dinner

Then we were invited over to Ben’s sister’s house to grill for Mother’s Day.  We were lucky enough to enjoy burgers, chicken, ribs, crab and corn; all from the grill.  I brought dessert and the Mother in Law brought fruit and salad.  I was pretty darn lucky again, I was greeted with gifts from Ben’s sister and brother in law, my own mother and Ben’s parents as well.  The thankfulness I feel to be able to celebrate my First Mother’s Day with such a wonderful family brings me to tears.  Like I said, I’m pretty darn lucky.

Ben meanwhile was enjoying a 3 Son’s Brewing Company pilsner – Ocean Park Pils and Imprint Beer Company’s pilsner – Philsner. (See Ben’s review of the Philsner here: Beer Review: Philsner (Imprint Beer Co.).)

Sunburst – New Trail Brewing Co.

Sunburst by New Trail Brewing Co.

(Ben already had two of these at Drew’s while streaming the new release of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. So my mom and I could only have two. For more Zelda and beer related content, check out Ben’s article – Zelda and Craft Beer.)

Beer: Sunburst – Experimental Hop Blend
Brewery: New Trail Brewing Co.
Style: IPA – Imperial / Double New England / Hazy
ABV: 9.1%
IBU: N / A
Untappd Description: Sunburst is a new Hazy DIPA series focusing on bringing out the best juicy fruity hop characteristics we can. Experimental Blend brings together 3 as-of-yet-unnamed experimental hops from The Hop Breeding Company; HBC 630, HBC 586, and HBC 472. The resulting aromatics are packed with chewy tropical candy, and peaches & cream. Enjoy the sun bursting across the sky with this one.

I split the New Trail Sunburst: Experimental Hop Blend with my mom as we started diving into the yummy grilled grub.  This one went down a little easy for a 9.1% ABV.  Sunburst is counted as an Imperial/Double New England / Hazy.  It is described on Untapped as Straw or deep gold in color, this style has a varying degree of cloudiness.  Starch, yeast, hop, protein and/or other compounds contribute to a wide range of hazy appearance within this style.  There is a perceived silky or full mouthfeel that may contribute to the overall flavor profile.  Grist may include a small amount of oat, wheat or other adjuncts to promote haziness.  Descriptors such as “juicy” are often used to describe the taste and hop-derived aroma attributes present in these beers.”  So my mom and I might have went on to split another one!

A Great Day

My day consisted of beer, food, family and love.  Again, I’m pretty darn lucky.  Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers out there! Can’t beat a day filled with good craft beer, good home grilled food, family, and love!

Drink More Beer!

(Saint Peter’s Trail)

Saint Peters Trail

Sitting here at the end of another beautiful weekend and it turned out NOTHING like how we planned it.  Huge plans got swept out from underneath us.  Then the substitute plans got turned all around.  So we were able to get away for a partial day and have time to ourselves….that also involved beer.  Because you know each ones of these plans absolutely involved BEER!!

We tried to make the best of the free time and still do something together.  The parameters were these items:  Within two hours of home, hike spot (not to difficult) and a new to us brewery not far from the hike spot.

We decided to set our sights on checking out St. Peter’s Village Hiking trail.  All Trails lists it as “Saint Pete’s Trail”  a moderate trail with a 2.2 mile loop.  We were nervous to get out on the trail with how full the parking lot was, especially since we brought Leela with, but we didn’t realize people also park there when visiting the village stores.

The “blue and yellow” trail by the markings started out with lots of graffiti.  You could tell some of it was old since algae was growing overtop of it from the side of a boulder.   The first mile or so is all incline.  Let me tell you how that gets the heart rate going!  Once you hit the top of the trail it winds back down and you are on a decline most of the way back.  The only items that was hard about the trail was avoiding the mud near the end of the yellow trail before it connected back to the yellow.

Tired Hands – Planet Punge

We split a hike beer from Tired Hands.  I was super excited about this one since it was part of a 420 PUNGE DAY release.  Planet Punge is described on Facebook at their intra-conically dry-hopped version of Punge.  When I tasted this beer, I was ready to bet it had phantasm powder in it.  (See Amy’s beer review of Fourscore Beer Co’s phantasm powder infused beer – Phantomania here – Beer Review: Phantomania.) However their description on Facebook goes on to describe it “For the uninitiated, an intra-conical dry-hopping is when we only dry-hop a beer in its conical fermenter ONLY and not in our brew kettles.  We do this to make the hop character of the beer incredibly FLORAL & BOL, and to keep the bitterness from the hops incredibly low. The taste was amazing and it made for the perfect hike beer.  Thanks Tired Hands!

Tired Hands Brewing Company – Planet Punge

Near the end of the trail I may have stepped, accidently in the water while hoping on some rocks.  To state my displeasure was an understatement.  I must say, though, the new hike boots I was trying to wear in are definitely waterproof.  The water that went overtop of the shoe stayed in the show and didn’t escape.  I was relieved to remember right away that I packed another two pairs of sneakers to change into.  Always pack extra shoes and socks!

Hares Hill Brewing Co.

Hares Hill Brewing Co.

We all but closed our eyes and picked from a map the brewery to visit.  And we picked Hare’s Hill Brewing Co.  When we first walked in we only saw a bar area.  I thought to myself shoot, I felt like sitting at a table after that  hike!  We quickly saw a few other rooms and the waitress told us we could pick any table.  Right away we picked out a flight of Space boy (Imperial Double IPA), Gnarly Rabbit (IPA American), The Goddess (New England Hazy IPA),  Ditto (Hefeweizen).  These all were solid beers the only thing we wish is to have at least one stout, porter or with the season a saison or seltzer.

Hares Hill Brewing Co – Flight and Junkyard Fries

We also split the Junkyard Fries.  At first, we thought it sounded similar to poutine.  The menu described it as St. Lucifer dusted fried, topped with brisket, cheese, bacon caramelized onions, garlic aioli and Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce.

That was it for the day and we prepared for our 1 hour and 12 minute ride home.  It’s so important to do these types of things to reconnect and relax.  We took many moments while hiking to stop and look around to soak in the peacefulness.

(Hares Hill Brewing Co.)

That’s it for this Sunday.

– Drink more beer!!

The YAH Brewery’s mural of Biggie Smalls

It Was All A Dream

It was all a dream, I used to read Word Up! magazine
Salt-n-Pepa and Heavy D up in the limousine
Hangin’ pictures on my wall
Every Saturday Rap Attack, Mr. Magic, Marley Marl
I let my tape rock ’til my tape popped
Smokin’ weed in Bambú, sippin’ on Private Stock
Way back, when I had the red and black lumberjack
With the hat to match

Remember Rappin’ Duke? Duh-ha, duh-ha
You never thought that hip-hop would take it this far

Now I’m in the limelight ’cause I rhyme tight
Time to get paid, blow up like the World Trade
Born sinner, the opposite of a winner
Remember when I used to eat sardines for dinner
Peace to Ron G, Brucie B, Kid Capri
Funkmaster Flex, Lovebug Starski

I’m blowin’ up like you thought I would
Call the crib, same number, same hood, it’s all good
And if you don’t know, now you know

Juicy (Song and Lyrics) – The Notorious B.I.G

YAH Brew

Young at Heart (YAH Brewing)

It was all a dream.

We got the pleasure of visiting the new YAH Brew soft opening in Hershey, Pa over the weekend.  The place was packed and it was awesome to see Amiee and Justin’s dream of a 90s themed brewery come to life.  The nostalgia hits home but it was the relaxing vibe of the place that is the best.  Even being packed other patrons are happy to scooch over to make a seat and comment on which brew they were also enjoying.  Now, this is a brewery!

(Read about our covering the YAH Brewery’s starting their soft opening here.)

There were four of us that enjoyed the visit.  Ben and I, of course; and we also brought along my mom and Scarlet too.  My mom brought along her crafts to work on while sipping her beer.  Scarlet brought along lots of baby toys while sipping her formula.  Scarlet wasn’t the only baby there and it made for a fun time to see other small ones.  Kids could sip on Little Hug fruit barrels “huggies” if you remember those and they still make them!

The YAH Brew “BrewBoy” (GameBoy) Menu

When trying to pick out which beer to start off with it is easy to get distracted by the 90s nostalgia, the place exudes nostalgia.  You are mesmerized by the all 90s music videos playing as well as the super NES console hooked up on the other TV.  Before you know it you are trying to remember if you still have your super NES console at home and how many times you blew on that Donkey Kong cartridge to get it to work again.

There were beer drinkers enjoying the patio outside and even a dachshund was joining in at YAH Brew as well.  Any other day I would have been all over an outside patio seating but I felt like my luck it would immediately start raining again. I was going to start off with Fourscore + YA Brew Yeet fresh but that was kicked so I tried the Gushee: Blueberry, Pomegranate, Peach Sour ale.  It’s served in a glass that looks like a Gusher.

YAH Brew – Gushee

(Check out our Instagram – The Beer Thrillers @ Instagram – to see more pictures of YAH Brew.)

Remember those fruit snacks from the 90s.  It looked like a large Gusher! We also sipped on Internet Café an oatmeal stout that was delicious and the Wild Rabbit IPA from Ever Grain.  We nibbled on some chips that were available for snacks.  We can’t wait to see what items will come from a 90s nostalgia themed brewery kitchen when they have their Grand Opening next month.

(Left to Right – SueAnn’s Wild Rabbit, Amy’s Gushee, and Ben’s Internet Cafe)

I had to go for the Shimmy Shake: Peanut Butter Egg as my second brew.  I remember it fondly as my treat after a long and tiring Easter Day with the family.

Amy reviewed the Shimmy Shake for her Easter weekly column

(Read more about Amy’s thoughts on the Shimmy Shake from her Easter weekly column here: Peanut Butter Eggs, Easter, Beer, and Yah Brew’s Shimmy Shake (Beer Review).)

But is it a Malt beverage or a golden stout?  It is listed as a Malt Beverage at the brewery but a golden stout on Untapped.  This lead us to have a lengthy argument on the two different beverage types.  But, regardless,  It was delicious!  I had to pull it away from my mom too, she kept stealing it!  Maybe we will rethink taking my mom out to breweries with us.

YAH Brew – Hazed by the Bell in the forefront, and YAH Brew – Shimmy Shake in the background.

We also had the Hazed by the Bell New England Hazy IPA.  This one had a bit of a hoppy taste but a must try when you stop in!

Cheers to the brewery location and we can’t wait to see it for the Grand Opening.

Drink more Beer

Thank You For Reading

Thank you for reading everyone! Editor B. Kline jumping in here for a closing bit. Thank you to everyone for reading. April was a fantastic month here at The Beer Thrillers with lots of great articles, great participation in the blog and site, and a lot of visitors to the site. Our Battle of the Breweries ended with Allusion Brewing Company winning, and we are going to be traveling back out to Vandergrift sometime in July to do a big event for them.

Speaking of big events – starting May 7th through May 10th is the Craft Brewers Conference. We will be there hanging out. If you are gonna be there, let us know and we’ll meet up! We can’t wait to go out and come down to Nashville TN (our first time there).

We have started our big project of doing maps of each state and showcasing all the breweries involved. So far we have three done:

Hoping by the end of May to have at least five more done. I would like to have the complete country done by the end of 2023, but we’ll see. Its quite time intensive.

There’s a lot more coming to the blog, and a lot of things happening. In just a few days is May the Fourth, which usually means a lot of breweries are turning their regular IPAs into Star Wars themed IPAs, and all kind of other shenanigans.

Make sure you subscribe and follow, also keep us bookmarked so you can see all the new stuff. We’ve also affiliated and sponsored with a few things like Pretzels.com and Beer Drop.com – you can read about them with the links in this paragraph. Great discounts there for you (and helps us here at the blog).

Amy is about to head out with her mom to see a Beatles cover band (Rain) in Lancaster and I’m gonna get this uploaded and take care of Scarlet for the night.
