Happy Mother’s Day

I hope my mom knows she is my best friend and my best beer drinking friend!  We could literally enjoy any beverage together and it would be a great time.  Well, except rum, Grandma SueAnn can’t do rum anymore.

Ben recently joined me on a work trip and Grandma SueAnn was gracious enough to help out with Scarlet while we enjoyed a couple days away before the work trip.  For taking on such a worthy task we, of course, brought her home a selection of beers from our trip.

We started off at RAR Brewing (see my article: May the Fourth Be With You – From a Non a Star Wars Lover at RAR Brewing’s Star Wars Fest), and made our way to Macklin Brewing in the evening.  We thought of her often while perusing the crafts and art for sale amongst the street fair May the 4^th be with you but on the 3^rd.  That street festival would have been Grandma SueAnn’s vibe.  And then in the evening chilling at Macklin Brewery, a completely different tone than the street fair, while chatting with some other brewery goers would have fit her vibe just the same.

Saturday we visited Big Oyster Brewery, Misspillion River Brewing, First State Brewing Company, JAKL Beer Works and Crooked Hammock Brewery.

Before we left Big Oyster Brewery I knew we were grabbing a 4pack to go.  We decided to grab Pillars of Dankness.  It is a delicious IPA that comes in at 7% ABV and has a 3.92 rating on Untapped.  Pillars of Dankness is as juicy as it is hazy.  You are completely lost in the hazy IPA takeover but there is an over silky pillow like softness that slowly settles you down to get ready for the next sip.

Grandma SueAnn would have loved First State Brewing.  I am not entirely sure if she would have played Exploding Kittens with us, but sipping that flight and munching on the poutine would have done the trick.  We picked up a crowler of the Vibrant Beats from First State Brewing.  We already knew we were indebted to Grandma SueAnn for helping with Scarlet so we knew this was one of the brews to take home.  She is a lover of the Belgium tripels.  It comes in at 10% ABV and has a 3.94 overall rating on Untapped.  It is described as a “blend of Antique Beats (Barrel Aged Barleywine) and vibrant Thoughts (Barrel Aged Belgium Tripel with Peach).  We split this crowler with her on our second night home and paired it pizza, chicken boli and chef salad.  Vibrant Beats has just a hint of booziness but it quickly grabs your attention with a slight fruity flavor with some maltiness and finishes with a sweet honey taste.  We definitely recommend Vibrant Beats and check out the First State Brewing Company. We ended our evening at Crooked Hammock.  We walked in thinking this would be a snack and a flight.  Our waitress was so excited about the food and beverage selections we found ourselves ordering a flight, the street corn fries and the Papa Pig Burger.  Our waitress absolutely helped make the visit very exciting but the food was amazing  We stuffed ourselves but still only ate half of the food.  Leftovers are great so don’t worry, we polished those off.  But the flight was awesome.  We ended up going with the Banana Hammock in a 4pack to split with Grandma SueAnn, since we now have purchased more beer.  This 15% ABV Belgian Quadrupel was not boozy tasting and felt very sneaky.  We recommend trying this one AT home kids.  This has a surprising 3.73% rating on untapped, I thought for sure it would have an average of 4.0 or higher.  This one is sneaky and smooth at the same time.  It is, as Josh would call it, a big damn beer #BDB  It has a beautiful amber color and, of course, has some banana flavor to it.  But more of a caramelized banana flavor that still has the spicy Belgian yeast behind it.  I can’t wait to drink this one on a hammock

I know my mom would vibe any each and every one of these breweries with us!  Visiting a brewery is meant to be a fun and comfortable visit. Some of our fav brewery visits together have been Sworn, Troegs, Boneshire Breworks, YAH Brew and Evergrain. Grandma SueAnn has gotten to visit several breweries now with us, her list is ever growing and we definitely want to get her to more, like Fourscore Beer Co, and more in the area!

Grandma SueAnn has been to Our Town Brewery, Boneshire Brew Works, YAH Brew, Troegs Independent Craft Brewing, Ever Grain Brewing, Sworn Brewing, Official BBQ and Brewing; and she has enjoyed them all. Can’t wait for more adventures with Grandma SueAnn at breweries!

We got to take SueAnn to Boneshire Brew Works while Scarlet was just little yet, she enjoyed a flight and had a wonderful time hanging out with us.

SueAnn came out with me for a work event (Alzheimer’s Association) at the Ever Grain Brewing. She is always so supportive… especially if there’s beer involved!

Another work event brought Grandma SueAnn and I out to Lancaster. So of course…. Our Town is right there, and we had to get in on it. Grandma SueAnn decided to give the beers ‘bunny ears’ for my picture!

Drinking at Home

Grandma SueAnn loves to ‘get down’ with some beers at home. After work, we love popping over to Grandma’s, having a beer or two to relax while Scarlet runs about the room playing. Its a great way to unwind from the long day and get to catch up with mom, enjoy some shared beer, and maybe even a great dinner to boot. A YAH Brew and a Schmidt’s Sausage (with Kraut) at the Fuzzy Few Festival

This delight was enjoyed Saturday August 17^th, the last day of the Fuzzy Few Festival in Hummelstown, PA.  This event has morphed since it’s inception over 55 years ago.  It felt like much more of a community supporting community.  (See our Instagram post from the Fuzzy Few Festival.)

I also spent every single night with an Alzheimer’s Association table setup.  I shared information and resources for those who shared concern or were going through a situation involving dementia or Alzheimer’s impacting their lives.  We also invited folks to join us at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s event on Saturday November 2, 2024 at City Island. (Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Harrisburg Area Walk.)

The Fuzzy Few Festival ran from August 12th until August 17^.  Most evenings the crowd walking around to play games and connect with local organizations died down by 9pm.  Most everyone had pulled up a lawn chair and was enjoying the free nightly concert.  A free event for the community is a gem to find. (See our article on the Fuzzy Few Festival 2024.)

With a wonderful donation from Troeg’s beer (last year, in 2023 – the Fuzzy Few Festival had the beer garden located inside the basketball court’s caged in area) it was nice to see a “beer garden” not far from where concert goers were enjoying their evening.  I mean if a community event is fundraising and providing free entertainment, why isn’t it busier here?

There still seems to be a stir amongst some former supporters of the carnival.  The move from out of state rides and game providers to come into our town seems to be the main complaint.  Although the need for volunteers is always so imperative and more dire.

YAH Brew continues to be a community supporter. With events like the “Benefit for CJ” and several collaboration beers to benefit local nonprofits. It would be great to see many more communities supporting communities. I can guarantee I’ll be continuing to support YAH Brew and Schmidt’s Sausage; and definitely the Fuzzy Few Organization. (Shout out to Justin for dropping the beer off to me on Saturday night. Megan and Dr. Barisch were hanging out at the Alzheimer’s tent with me, discussing the Bicycle Criterium in Hummelstown, and I sent them over to Justin to talk about Hummelstown and to enjoy YAH Beers.)

Fuzzy Few Festival

The Fuzzy Few Festival was another fun year. Amy and her mom worked dueling stands / tents at the event. Amy had an informational booth for the Alzheimer’s Association, while Grandma SueAnn had a stand selling magnets with the donations and money raised going to the Walk to End ALZ events.

I helped set up with Amy on Sunday morning before work (Sunday the 11th). Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday I was able to attend the event, mostly to help keep an eye on Scarlet (who loved running around, and especially loved playing in the Duck game’s water).

Two of my older daughters got to come and hang out with us on Thursday and absolutely cleaned house at the dime pitch. (We landed the Appalachian Brewing growler, but with no cap, and no real interest in growlers anymore, we let another lay claim to it).

All in all it was an absolutely fantastic event. My parents had a good time when they visited (my dad enjoyed getting to see the final performance of Pentagon), Grandma SueAnn said she sold a good number of magnets, and Amy got to help provide people with critical information about the Alzheimer’s Association.

Fuzzy Few Organization Presents the Fuzzy Few Festival With Beer Garden 2024

Fuzzy Few Festival

Previously known as the Fuzzy Few Carnival, this year the Fuzzy Few Organization is renaming and rebranding it as a Festival rather than a carnival.

For the past 55 years it has been the Fuzzy Few Carnival and has happened near or around the middle of August every year. With the Hummelstown Fireman’s Carnival happening in the end of June each year.

Unfortunately, as with most things – COVID – 19 changed a lot of the way events, activities, and things like this work. And with all of that it became harder and harder for the Fuzzy Few Organization (FFO) to be able to secure carnival groups to come help assist their carnival each year. Last year they were unable to have rides and other vendors due to this, but they did procure some inflatable activities and playground stuff for children.

So pivoting for 2023 they announced the Fuzzy Few Festival (instead of the Fuzzy Few Carnival).

Now in its second year as the Fuzzy Few Festival, it returns for 2024 from August 12th through August 17th.

It will run from August 12th through August 17th 2024 at Schaffner Park (Boro Park).

Beer Garden

The Beer Garden has moved from the caged in basketball courts to right directly in front of the band stage – and as a bonus – they will allow guests to purchase the alcohol and move about the festival rather than having to stay within the basketball court like last year.

Known beer will be Troegs Independent Brewing (who has graciously donated eight [8] cases of beer to the event) – Perpetual IPA, Sunshine Pilsner, and Graffiti Highway IPA – as well as Blue Moon, Coors Light, and Miller Lite. (More could be announced.) Also on top of beer there is mixed drink, wine, cocktails, and select other beverages.

Pentagon

The band Pentagon are hosting their “farewell tour” and one of their final gigs will be the closing day of the Fuzzy Few Festival 2024. This might be your last chance to catch them in action, so be sure to come out Saturday August 17th. The festival runs until 11:30 PM.

Amy and the Alzheimer’s Association

Make sure you stop out to visit Amy at her Alzheimer’s Assocciation stand. (I’ll also be helping out a few nights after work). Raising awareness for Alzheimer’s and for the Alzheimer’s Association.

She will have a stand at the Festival, so you can stop in, talk with her (or us) and hang out, and get information, fliers, pamphlets and information about Alzheimer’s, the Alzheimer’s Association, and their work raising awareness, looking for a cure, charitable work, as well as the upcoming End ALZ Walks.

History of Fuzzy Few Organization

The founding of the Organization, know as the Fuzzy Few, came about during Hummelstown’s 200th Anniversary. It was formed as a Bearded Brothers Club to participate in that celebration. After playing a very active role during the time of fun and merriment, the men in the club decided to apply for an official charter and operate as a non-profit organization in the community of Hummelstown.

The organization’s official emblem was registered and approved on December 29th, 1963. The emblem also indicates the clubs desire to promote goodwill and fellowship not only within the organization but also throughout the community and surrounding areas.

The goal of the organization since its founding has been to establish and support community and youth related programs.

We had just gotten home from our State College visit where Amy had her Walk to End ALZ event on Saturday, November 4th. While signing into my Mozilla Firefox browser for the day, on the ‘pocket’ articles that constitutes my opening homepage, there was an article about a link between beer and Alzheimer’s and how beer could help in preventing Alzheimer’s.

In a groundbreaking exploration into Alzheimer’s prevention, researchers have uncovered a potential game-changer: hop flower extracts, a common ingredient in beer. This discovery sheds light on the multifaceted role of hops, long recognized for their stabilizing properties in all types of beers.

The Study: Investigating Hop Varieties

The University of Milano-Bicocca spearheaded a meticulous study, putting four widely-used hop varieties—Cascade, Saaz, Tettnang, and Summit—under scrutiny. The objective was to discern their impact on preventing the clumping of brain proteins linked to Alzheimer’s. We were in State College for the Walk to End ALZ. We were there Friday November 3rd, and Saturday November 4th. Amy works for the Alzheimer’s Association and was in charge of the State College Walk to End ALZ. I haven’t been up to State College since I was about 9 or 10 years old or so, and got to see a Penn State game at Beaver Stadium. I have had some of Otto’s Brewery beers before – my friend Ming brought home a mix six pack for me once. Amy was too tired last night to do her normal Sunday weekly column, so she took the time to do it tonight (Monday). She also did a mid week column – Halloween Candy and Beer Pairings; so please be sure to check that out. Amy is still recouping from the busy weekend and I believe is already sound asleep to the Simpson’s. This is her brewery review. (-Ben)

Brewery Review: Otto’s Pub and Brewery

We received the most recommendations for Otto’s Pub and Brewery when we polled our friends on which brewery we should check out while working in State College.  This was our first time at Otto’s but we previously had some of there beers.

We knew there would be a wait to get into this place on a Friday night.  We lapped the parking lot to find a distillery right in front of Otto’s.  After later seeing they are both owned by C&D Brewing ventures we will definitely check them out on the next trip into SC. 

We were told a 30-minute wait and by the looks of Barrel 21 Distillery in front of Otto’s that seemed pretty generous.  Besides I saw plenty of things in the general store I wanted to take an extra peak at.

There was lots of cool merchandise in the store.  But right away the line of Otto’s craft soda caught my attention. 

I was immediately drooling over the stacks of grape soda, birch beer, raspberry cream soda, orange soda, root beer and ginger beer. While I was pregnant and later breast feeding Scarlet being able to find craft sodas or just anything nonalcoholic at a brewery felt like such a treat. (See my Weekly Column: I Really Miss Drinking.)

I immediately squealed with delight at the sight of the ginger beer.  I struggled so hard with nausea my ENTIRE pregnancy and ginger seemed to really help that symptom subside.  There was definitely going to be a 6 pack coming home with me. 

The nostalgia of the soda and the décor of Otto’s was hitting hard as we were waiting for our table.  We got chatting and almost missed our table. 

We were seated and waited on quickly considering how busy the place was.  We ordered a “Try 3” and a 20 oz pour.  In the try 3 mix we picked Oktoberfest, Small batch series Porter and Small Batch Series Ale: Pumpkin Ale.  For the 20 oz we tried the Slab cabin IPA.  The Porter was loved by Ben and the Pumpkin Ale was loved by Amy.  If you know our tastes, this was predictable.

I saw house made beer pretzel on the appetizer menu and I couldn’t pass it by.  I could be talked into many things with the offering of a beer pretzel, especially one served with sweet and spicy mustard.  Both the beer and the pretzel arrived in a short amount of time.  The pretzel tasted buttery and rich but not greasy.  It paired perfectly with the beers!

I had my eye on the BBQ chicken pizza special.  We went with no banana hot peppers to cut down on spiciness.  But it definitely still had a kick to it.  I am guessing the Southwest Ranch.  But it wasn’t anything a swig of the yummy brews couldn’t fix.

We’ll definitely be back to Otto’s and you should check it out too.

Walk to End ALZ

Editor Ben jumping back in here. I just want to say how amazing of a job Amy did for the State College Walk to End ALZ. As well as all of the volunteers she had working for her, but I just want to mention how amazing of a job Amy did. We got up to State College around 1 PM and worked until nearly 6 PM getting Medlar Field and the Beaver Stadium / State College Campus area ready for the walk. It was hard work, but Amy is very dedicated, hard working, and a wonderful advocate for the cause. She did an absolutely phenomenal job – as she always does – for the walk. We got to meet a lot of great people, got to hear wonderful touching stories from people over the weekend, and hopefully helped raise awareness, raise funds, and help lift and bolster spirits for people dealing with this horrific disease. Amy is a truly kick ass hard working warrior for the cause.

I was feeling in the mood to split a beer or two, maybe three with Grandma SueAnn.  Yesterday she kicked butt. Cumulative fundraising of $800 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on City Island and also volunteering at the walk event.  It was definitely some time to celebrate.

Zoktoberfest by KCBC – Kings County Brewers Collective

We started off with the Zoktoberfest by KCBC.  I am going to be honest, it is because of my driving.  When I showed up to Grandma SueAnn’s house, the Devious Imperial Pumpkin  had escaped the bag I was totting along.  I was still scared enough that I held it over the sink when I opened it!

The Zoktoberfest comes in with a 5.4% ABV and it has an overall untapped rating of 3.75.  It is described as “Smooth, bready malt character, with Clean earthy bitterness. Finishes crisp and dry. Crushable.  Brewed with 100% German malt and hops.  Worthy of your best lederhosen and your finest stein.”

This doesn’t feel like our typical marzen.  Grandma SueAnn and I tasted more of the bready malty flavors but then very crisp and light caramel.  Untapped has a few confused check ins too.

And that is exactly how I’d describe it “Bit thin flavored” The flavors are all there but they are subtle and do nothing to excite me.  Grandma SueAnn concluded “It was just ok.” 

Devious Imperial Pumpkin by Fegley Brew Works

After some laundry checks and dogs walked it was time for the next beer.  I think I was scared of the Devious Imperial Pumpkin by Fegley’s Brew Works. 

Devious Imperial Pumpkin (DIP) comes in at a 9% ABV and an overall untapped rating of 3.77.  It is described as “Amber-hued and expertly brewed with real pumpkin, pale, Munich and caramel malts, this ale pours a frothy dark ruby color with enchanting aromas of pumpkin pie, spiced cookies and nutmeg.  A harmonious blend of ginger, cinnamon, clove and allspice balances natural pumpkin sweetness, revealing rich undertones of toffee, squash and clove.  Finished with unique notes of spiced pumping seeds and blood orange marmalade, this full bodied ale offers a sophisticated and delightful taste of the season, crafted with unmated passion and quality.”

Ah yes, we love a good pumpkin beer.  Not sweet and not too spicy.  Grandma SueAnn describes it as a beer you don’t even have to think about.  You just drink it and enjoy it.  You know what?  She is right.  It was so easy to just enjoy this well balanced pumpkin beer on a chilly fall day.

Post – Script

Ben jumping on here. Just want to say that Amy did an absolutely amazing job this weekend of helping Francis organize, run, and execute the Walk to End ALZ event on City Island at FNB Field in Harrisburg, PA yesterday. She absolutely puts her everything into it and always does such an amazing job. You can tell that she really cares hard about the quality and work that she does, and that she really cares about the cause.

Grandma SueAnn is no exception to that as well. She helped raise a lot of money for “Team Grandma Squared” and in honor of her mother.

It was also Grandma SueAnne’s 69th birthday on Friday night. After I got off work, we went over to Official BBQ and Brewpub in back of Rutherford (on Lyter Lane). Absolutely fantastic BBQ, and good brews as well. Micah and Aaron Delp do an amazing job there. If you check out our Instagram page you’ll soon see pics of our dinner at Official BBQ as well as pics from the Walk to End ALZ event.

The Walk to End ALZ comes to Clarion on Thursday, September 28th, 2023 at Lost in the Wilds Brewing. Registration is at 5:00 PM and the Opening Ceremony and Walk is at 6:00 PM.

We are very excited to host the Clarion Alzheimer’s Walk at Lost In The Wilds this year. 

Our brewery is located along the Rail 66 Country Trail, which is a four season paved hiking and biking trail. We hope that our beautiful outdoor venue and proximity to the trail will provide a perfect atmosphere for this years event. Lost In The Wilds Brewing is a microbrewery located in Shippenville, and is conveniently located at the gateway to the PA WILDS. 

We currently produce a wide variety of beers on site and provide a full taproom and sprawling outdoor venue for nature and beer lovers alike. We hope to make this years Alzheimer’s Walk a great success to raise awareness about this disease while giving attendees a spacious and comfortable area to enjoy. We will be offering some fun purple cocktails during the event.

Its also so great to see a brewery helping out such a tremendous cause and to have the event at their place and to support organizations fighting terrible diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s Disease

The following comes from the Wikipedia article on Alzheimer’s Disease.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and progressively worsens,^[2] and is the cause of 60–70% of cases of dementia.^[2][10] The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events.^[1] As the disease advances, symptoms can include problems with language, disorientation (including easily getting lost), mood swings, loss of motivation, self-neglect, and behavioral issues.^[2] As a person’s condition declines, they often withdraw from family and society.^[11] Gradually, bodily functions are lost, ultimately leading to death. Although the speed of progression can vary, the typical life expectancy following diagnosis is three to nine years.^{[needs update][8][12]}

The cause of Alzheimer’s disease is poorly understood.^[11] There are many environmental and genetic risk factors associated with its development. The strongest genetic risk factor is from an allele of APOE.^[13][14] Other risk factors include a history of head injury, clinical depression, and high blood pressure.^[1] The disease process is largely associated with amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and loss of neuronal connections in the brain.^[15] A probable diagnosis is based on the history of the illness and cognitive testing, with medical imaging and blood tests to rule out other possible causes.^[5][16] Initial symptoms are often mistaken for normal brain aging.^[11] Examination of brain tissue is needed for a definite diagnosis, but this can only take place after death.^[17] Good nutrition, physical activity, and engaging socially are known to be of benefit generally in aging, and may help in reducing the risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s.^[15]

No treatments can stop or reverse its progression, though some may temporarily improve symptoms.^[2] Affected people become increasingly reliant on others for assistance, often placing a burden on caregivers.^[18] The pressures can include social, psychological, physical, and economic elements.^[18] Exercise programs may be beneficial with respect to activities of daily living and can potentially improve outcomes.^[19] Behavioral problems or psychosis due to dementia are often treated with antipsychotics, but this is not usually recommended, as there is little benefit and an increased risk of early death.^[20][21]

As of 2020, there were approximately 50 million people worldwide with Alzheimer’s disease.^[9] It most often begins in people over 65 years of age, although up to 10% of cases are early-onset impacting those in their 30s to mid-60s.^[17][4] It affects about 6% of people 65 years and older,^[11] and women more often than men.^[22] The disease is named after German psychiatrist and pathologist Alois Alzheimer, who first described it in 1906.^[23] Alzheimer’s financial burden on society is large, with an estimated global annual cost of US$1 trillion.^[9] It is ranked as the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.^[15]
