A Complete Guide to Bavarian Brewing Tradition

Thinking about Oktoberfest? Massive amounts of beer first come to mind—and for good reason! This world-famous festival is all about tradition, celebration, and, of course, raising a Maß (liter-sized mug) of specially brewed drink. But Oktoberfest beer isn’t just any lager you can grab at your local store. It follows strict brewing rules, has a unique taste, and comes in two main styles: the classic Märzen and the lighter Festbier. Only six Munich breweries have the honor of producing this special brewery and calling their beer “ Oktoberfest official” served at the festival.

Do You Know? 6.7 million attendees visited and consumed 7 million liters of beer during Oktoberfest 2024.

Each sip of German-style beer captures a distinct taste. Whether you take at the vibrant festivities or enjoy it at home, what makes Oktoberfest beer so special is its key ingredients and definitive features.

Oktoberfest Beer History – How a Maltier Brew Became an Iconic Tradition

Oktoberfest beer traces back to the early 19th century to celebrate Prince Ludwig’s and Princess Therese’s wedding. Their celebrations lasted for days and resulted in the popularity of a lot from the Bavarian culture, such as the traditional lederhosen and dirndl dress, along with plenty of beer.

The Oktoberfest, which is now called the world’s largest beer festivity, didn’t always feature the brews you associate it with today.  The wedding celebration was such a success that it was repeated the following year and eventually became an annual tradition of what we now know as Oktoberfest, and with it came a beer style that remains iconic.

Initially, the drink served was a darker, maltier brew known as Märzen. It was named after the month of March, when it was traditionally brewed and stored in cool caves over the summer. Märzen remained the official beer for Oktoberfest in Germany for around 100 years due to its amber color and toasty malt profile. But as the celebration grew into an international sensation, festival-goers wanted something even more palatable. Munich’s breweries responded with malt-forward lager with a beautiful light golden to copper color (Festbier). This modern Oktoberfest beer style with a clean finish is served at the festival today.

American vs. German Styles — What’s the Difference

Same name, Different Beer! If you have picked up an Oktoberfest beer outside of Munich, you might have noticed something different—it won’t taste the same. Many people think Oktoberfest brew is just one style, but it’s not. You may find American and German approaches to this special beer tradition. U.S. breweries took the inspiration from the original Märzen, while in Germany, you taste the modern Festbier. Both styles, however, share a malt-forward character.

  • Märzen – The Original Oktoberfest Beer

American Oktoberfest Beers are often Märzen-style. It features an amber color and a slightly sweet taste with notes of toffee, biscuit, and bread. They typically have a medium body and a light toasted malt character. Märzen contains 5.8–6.3% alcohol by volume and is slightly heavier than a German Festbier.

  • Festbier – More Refreshing Lager

When you think of Oktoberfest beer in Germany, you’re talking about Festbier—the golden, crisp lager that fills massive mugs in Munich’s beer tents. It tends to be paler and more similar to a Dortmunder-style brewer with a balanced flavor profile. Festbier has a clean fermentation character and provides a toasty-doughy aromatic with an impression of sweetness. This makes it easier to drink in liters at festivities. The color varies, but you will find German versions mostly in golden, like a strong Pils-dominated Helles.

When buying any of the above beer styles, read the label. Märzen is always mentioned in the bottle, but if it displays Oktoberfest, you are drinking Festbier.

What Defines the Oktoberfest Beer— A Representative of Bavarian Heritage

Not just any beer can call itself an Oktoberfest beer. It has a unique character and brewing process that sets it apart from your everyday lagers. The drink served at festivities reflects German centuries-old brewing traditions and makes it a symbol of true celebrations.

It Must Be Brewed in Munich

Only six breweries—Augustiner, Paulaner, Spaten, Hofbräu, Hacker-Pschorr, and Löwenbräu—are allowed to serve “official” Oktoberfest beer at the celebration. Other than these are strictly forbidden at the festivities. These breweries operate large and small beer tents at the Theresienwiese to serve millions of people during the festival. Also, the beer must be brewed within the city limits of Munich to ensure authenticity.

It Follows the Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Law)

The beer must meet specific criteria of Bavarian law to be officially recognized as an Oktoberfest brew. This means it only contains

  • Water
  • Malted barley
  • Hops
  • Yeast

No additives or shortcuts!

It Has a Balanced, Malty Flavor

Oktoberfest beer is known for its smooth maltiness. Whether it’s the traditional Märzen or the modern Festbier, the flavor profile is malty, smooth, and highly drinkable, with a good balance of sweetness and hop bitterness.

It Has a Higher Alcohol Content

To give it a strong kick, Oktoberfest beers generally have a higher alcohol content compared to typical lagers. The permitted ABV typically ranges from 5.8% to 6.3%, which can vary by brewery. Hofbräuzelt beer is the strongest, with 6.3% alcohol. This gives it a bit more body and warmth, making it perfect for cool autumn celebrations.

It’s a Lager, Not an Ale

Oktoberfest beer is a bottom-fermented lager. This means it ferments at cooler temperatures for a longer time. The lagering results in a refreshing, smooth taste with fewer fruity or spicy flavors compared to ales. It also adds a crisp and clean finish to Oktoberfest beers.

It’s Made for Drinking by the Liter

One of the key features of Oktoberfest beer is its high drinkability. As you don’t just sip it— you celebrate it every few minutes. The beer is brewed to be enjoyed by the liter (Maßkrug) without feeling too heavy. That’s why modern Festbier is lighter than Märzen—so festival-goers can keep drinking all day long!l

Pairs Perfectly with Traditional Bavarian Cuisine to Enhance the Taste

Drinking Oktoberfest beer is only half the experience—the other half is savoring it with the perfect Bavarian feast. Whether you’re in a lively beer tent in Munich or hosting your Oktoberfest celebration at home, the right food pairing elevates the flavors of your brew. It makes each sip and bite more satisfying.

If you have Märzen-style, try its malty sweetness and yeasty flavor with

  • Roasted Meats—A browned, crisp skin of roast chicken or sausage
  • Hearty Dishes— The heat of hearty chili, stews, or schweinshaxe (roast ham hock or pork knuckle with gravy).
  • Pretzels — Soft, salty, and chewy baked pretzels dip in Obatzda.
  • Desserts — Waffles with syrup, pancakes with jam, or cookies and cake.
  • Cheese: Gruyere and Emmental or flavor notes found in accompaniments like jam, nuts, toasted bread, or crackers.

If you have Festbier in Munich, complement its light and crips finish with

  • Schnitzel — Veal, pork, or chicken when served with lemon or red berry jam.
  • Richer Dishes — Creamier recipies like cheesy noodles (käsespätzle), currywurst, or German potato salad.
  • Weisswurst — White sausage presented with sweet mustard and a pretzel.
  • Traditional Pairings — Roast chicken or pork, sauerkraut, and potato pancakes.

These pairings complement perfectly with the beers’ flavors and add to the overall enjoyment. The caramelized malt in Märzen doubles the taste of savory, slow-roasted meats. Similarly, the sharper and hoppier notes of Oktoberfestbier cut through the richness of creamy and saucy meals.

Wrapping Up

The rich and unique flavor, traditional roots, and the main brewery crafting procedure make Oktoberfest beer special. It is served in two main forms at different geographical locations. If you are in Munich and purchase a beer, it is most likely a light and smooth-textured Festbier. While outside Germany, breweries love to sell the traditional Märzen. The specific rules regulated to serve beer at Oktoberfest make it a unique experience for millions of visitors and set it apart from regular alcoholic drinks.

Beers at a bar

Dude Fest: A Bar In Idaho Has Declared It ‘Heterosexual Awareness Month’ And Will Be Giving Free Beers To All Straight Men

In an unexpected turn of events, a quirky bar in Idaho, which also hosts a Conspiracy Theory Trivia Night (sounds intriguing), is celebrating Male Mondays throughout June. They are offering a free draft beer to all straight men. At first, I assumed it was a Gay Bar showing appreciation for their allies, but no, it turns out to be a straightforward political statement. This is yet another reminder of the complexities we navigate in the United States today. June, as many know, is also Pride Month, yet surprisingly, nine NFL teams have not yet acknowledged it on their social media platforms.

Our societal landscape is quite peculiar. I firmly believe in the freedom to do whatever you want, with whomever you want, whenever you want. However, the obsession with monitoring logo changes to rainbow colors, organizations debating these changes, and subsequent boycotts is rather amusing to me.

But that’s a topic for another time. The focus here is on the amusing irony of a bar trying to counter Pride Month by offering free beer to straight men. If things go as expected, the bar might end up distributing a significant amount of free beer (potentially even to gay individuals who grab their free drink and leave). Moreover, the idea of “sticking it to Pride Month” by packing a bar full of men seems quite counterintuitive and rather funny.

The Top 50 Craft Brewing Companies in the United States

The Brewer’s Association has released their annual “Top 50 US Craft Brewing Companies“. They release this yearly, and its always a gold mine of information on what breweries are producing how much, distribution, sales, and who all is still considered ‘craft beer’ vs ‘macro beer’.

From their report:

The Brewers AssociationOpens in new window (BA)—the trade association representing small and independent1Opens in new window  American craft brewers—today released annual production figures for the U.S. craft brewing industry. 2 In 2022, small and independent brewers collectively produced 24.3 million barrels of beer, on par with 2021’s numbers3, and craft’s overall beer market share by volume grew to 13.2%, up from 13.1% the previous year.

The overall beer market* shrank 3% by volume in 2022. Retail dollar value was estimated at $28.46 billion, representing a 24.6% market share and 6% growth over 2021. Sales growth was stronger than volume due to pricing, share shift to smaller brewers—who are more likely to sell onsite and via distributed draught—as well as the continued channel shift back to on-premise, which has a higher average retail value. Craft brewers provided 189,413 direct jobs, a 9% increase from 2021, driven both by growth in the number of breweries and a continued shift to hospitality-focused business models.

Brewer’s Association: Top 50 US Craft Brewing Companies

Growth in Craft Breweries

Overall in 2022 the total number of craft breweries increased. Hitting an all time high of 9,552 breweries open in 2022.

The number of operating craft breweries continued to climb in 2022, reaching an all-time high of 9,552, including 2,035 microbreweries, 3,418 brewpubs, 3,838 taproom breweries, and 261 regional craft breweries. The total U.S. operating brewery count was 9,709, up from 9,384 in 2021. Throughout the year, there were 549 new brewery openings and 319 closings. Openings decreased for a second consecutive year, with the continued decline reflecting a more mature market. The closing rate increased in 2022 but continued to remain relatively low, at approximately 3%.

Of the top 50 overall brewing companies in 2022, 40 were small and independent craft brewing companies.4

“Breweries that managed to move up the list organically are often those that are adding incremental growth to the category,” said Watson. “Both beer and craft need to create new occasions and new beer lovers to find growth.”

The Battle of the Breweries (2023) – Conference Final Four Results https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/03/27/the-battle-of-the-breweries-2023-conference-final-four-results/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-battle-of-the-breweries-2023-conference-final-four-results Mon, 27 Mar 2023 15:26:26 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=10856
The Battle of the Breweries (2023)

Here We Are

Well, here we are – the Conference Finals. Not the tournament finals, but the finals for all four conferences. We are down to the final match – up in each conference before moving on to the Fatal Four Way Finals. (Rather than have two more rounds, we do things a bit differently here at The Beer Thrillers, and decide the finals in a fatal four way as a good main event of our little version of BrewerMania). Besides, it adds to the suspense to have a four way match – up rather than a simple heads up. (And hey, we even let you see the vote tallies!)

But first – just as we’ve done with all the previous rounds – before we move on to the next round, we need to take a look at the results of the past round.

In this case, since there’s fewer match – ups now, instead of doing a Results Page for each Conference (Chinook, Nugget, Saaz, and Walhalla), I’m just doing one results page for them all. We are also only going to be having one voting page this round as well (since there’s only one match – up per conference anyway).

How Did We Get Here (Past Results)

First, let’s take a look at how we got here. You can only know where you are by how you got there after all.

Group Stage Voting Pages

Group Stage Results Pages

Round of 16 Voting Pages

Round of 16 Results Pages

Round of 8 Voting Pages

Round of 8 Results Pages

Conference Final Four Voting Pages

Conference Final Four Results

Ok, now that we all got that out of the way. Let’s take a look at the Conference Final Four results for each conference. That way we know who we’re voting for in the Conference Finals!

Chinook Conference

First up is the Chinook Conference. Which had an absolutely insane amount of votes. Congratulations to all the breweries involved in this conference. It was two hard fought battles!

In the first match up we had the number 9 seed Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery taking on the number 13 seed Chubby Squirrel Brewing Company. Tattered Flag Brewery came out on top with 140 votes against Chubby Squirrel Brewing Company’s 81 votes.

In the second battle we had a real doozy of a fight! Number 6 seed Forbes Trail Brewing Company battled number 10 seed Cox Brewing Company in the highest voted battle so far in the tournament. Cox Brewing Company came out on top with 2519 votes versus Forbes Trail Brewing Company’s 1287 votes.

I wish both could move on they put up such a good battle! But alas, only one could come out on top.

The finals of the Chinook Conference will see two veteran owned breweries battle to move on to the Finals Fatal Four Way. Tattered Flag Brewery and Distillery vs. Cox Brewing Company.

Nugget Conference

In the second of four conference we had another two good battles raging with all four breweries having a good showing.

In the first match – up we had the number 8 seed (and returning champion) Von C Brewing Company defeat the number 13 seed 7 Mile Brewery with a total of 215 votes to 197 votes.

In the second battle we had six seed Allusion Brewing Company defeat the 15 seed Bunnyman Brewing with a total of 283 votes to 169 votes.

Two good battles in this conference means we should have one really good finals in the Nugget Conference. The finals will be Von C Brewing Company vs. Allusion Brewing Company – East Pennsylvania vs. West Pennsylvania.

Saaz Conference

With the Saaz Conference and the Walhalla Conference we (unfortunately) saw a lot less action with our voting. Probably a case of breweries not promoting it as much, or maybe technical issues (though none were reported to me), but the Saaz Conference and Walhalla Conference saw a significant amount of less votes than the other two did.

The first match – up saw number 4 seed RAR Brewing taking on number 9 seed Southern Tier Brewing Company. RAR Brewing came out on top winning 39 to 35.

The second match – up in the Saaz Conference had 11 seed AleCraft Brewing Company defeating the second seed Fourscore Beer Co by a score of 70 to 35.

This makes the finals for Saaz Conference a strictly Maryland affair (though AleCraft Brewing has expanded into Pennsylvania with their new Railroad PA location), with RAR Brewing vs. AleCraft Brewing Company.

Walhalla Conference

The Walhalla Conference had some Central PA local battles. The first being Harrisburg / Rutherford’s Boneshire Brew Works vs. Mechanicsburg’s Wolf Brewing Co, and the second having East Petersburg’s Mad Chef Brewing vs. Mechanicsburg’s LoveDraft’s Brewing Company.

In that first match – up number 8 seed Boneshire Brew Works defeated 5 seed Wolf Brewing Company with a total of 51 to 37.

In the second match – up we had 11 seed Mad Chef Brewing defeat 10 seed LoveDraft’s Brewing Company – 68 to 60.

So the finals of the Walhalla Conference will be Boneshire Brew Works vs. Mad Chef Brewing. Looks to be a good close match – up!

Conference Finals

Here is what we are looking at for our conference finals match – ups:

  • Chinook Conference: Tattered Flag Brewery vs. Cox Brewing Company
  • Nugget Conference: Von C Brewing vs. Allusion Brewing Company
  • Saaz Conference: RAR Brewing vs. AleCraft Brewing Company
  • Walhalla Conference: Boneshire Brew Works vs. Mad Chef Brewing

Who are you all looking to see move on to the Fatal Four Way Finals?

Make sure to vote! The voting page will be up in about a half hour!

Voting Rules

The voting rules for the Conference Finals are:

You can vote daily for your favorite breweries in each conference. Voting ends Sunday night, April 2nd, at 11:59:59 PM EST. So make sure you get your votes in early and often! And be sure to share and bookmark the page to help your favorite breweries even more. The voting pages will be up shortly (most likely around 10AM).

This is the finals of each conference (Chinook, Nugget, Saaz, and Walhalla). After this round, we move on to the finals for the entire tournament. Its a Fatal Four Way match between the winner of each conference. The Fatal Four Way Finals lasts two weeks to make sure every brewery gets plenty of time to promote and vote!

Thanks For Reading

Sorry for this going up a bit late. Was trying to get it done before leaving to go to the Central PA Blood Bank in Hershey to donate, but with Scarlet, and running around getting ready, the article just wasn’t done.

Coming home from donating (you can see the picture of me donating at our Instagram – here: The Beer Thrillers – Instagram – Blood Donation) had to answer a few phone calls, and then get this done and published (whilst Scarlet decided to have a ‘blow out’). So its been a fun morning so far, but at least we got the Results Page and Voting Page out by noon.

Thank you all very much for checking in with us and voting. I hope you really enjoy the tournament.

This tournament is a lot of work but one of my favorite things to do each year. I love to see the friendly competition between breweries and drinkers / fans of the breweries. Fun to see which breweries share and follow along and its great the competitive but friendly nature that evolves from this competition.

If you see any errors or find any technical glitches, please let me know. WordPress has been a bit buggy, and Facebook has also been doing some weird mobile linking issues, so I’m trying to get all of that hammered out and fixed. Let me know if you see anything.

In case you haven’t heard – we recently started a sponsorship / partnership / affiliateship with Beer Drop to help you get discounted, cheaper, fresh beer right to your door. You can read more and get the coupons and discount codes here: Sponsoring with Beer Drop

Amy is back writing again for us after her hiatus (ain’t easy having a baby). She will be having a nearly weekly column type article series with us. You can find her latest article here:

Voting for this round ends Sunday April 2nd, at 11:59:59 PM EST. Just about the time that WrestleMania 39 Night Two will be ending (I suppose). What breweries will be celebrating as (hopefully) Cody Rhodes will also be celebrating?

Again, thank you all so very much for reading! Please like, share, follow, subscribe, comment, bookmark, etc. It really helps us out here.

Cheers All!

YAH Brew Coming to Hershey in Spring 2023 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/03/02/yah-brew-coming-to-hershey-in-spring-2023/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=yah-brew-coming-to-hershey-in-spring-2023 Thu, 02 Mar 2023 18:54:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=10527

YAH Brew is Coming to Hershey in 2023

A couple of weeks back at the Winter Fling in Hummelstown, I got to chat with Justin Hoak and Aimee Hoak (his wife) about their brewery that has been in the works for over a year now – and he told me they were going to be taking over the Tattered Flag’s Distillery Bar location in Hershey. Well, today I can let the cat out of the bag and they will be opening in Spring of 2023.

Justin was approved for brewery production and has been producing from their location in Hummelstown Pennsylvania at 268 West Main St Hummelstown, PA. They ran into some roadblocks trying to get a location in Hummelstown, and even ran into issues with the Hummelstown Borough Board. (Hummelstown is also the home to Rubber Soul Brewing Company.)

YAH Brew will be taking over the Tattered Flag’s Distillery Bar in Hershey, Pennsylvania. A property that since COVID – 19 Tattered Flag has been using sparingly.

Since COVID – 19 Tattered Flag has been in an interesting flux as far as staffing and related issues go. They increased in location size having five locations at one point – their main brewery and distillery in Middletown, Pennsylvania; their Hershey Distillery Bar location; their Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Taproom; their Lancaster Pennsylvania Barrel Aging location; and their second floor restaurant and taproom at Hollywood Casino in Grantville Pennsylvania.

They had been using the Hershey location for Viking dinners and other event style activities.

The location is down the road from the Hershey Fresh Market venue which currently houses an Ever Grain, The Vegetable Hunter, Shy Bear, and Jigsy’s stands – all of which are breweries or brewpubs (these are secondary locations for each of these companies). Iron Hill Brewing is also nearby the Hershey Fresh Market venue and a few blocks down from the soon to be YAH Brewery location.

The location can be found at: 251 West Chocolate Ave, Hershey Pennsylvania.

Tattered Flag has used this location as a bar and taproom for their brewery and distillery since 2019 when they took it over from the Hershey Biergarten. It is attached to the Hershey Escape Room.

(A flight of beers I reviewed from July 2019 when it was still owned by Hershey Biergarten: Multiple Beer Review: Dark Skies (New Trail), Blood Money (Conshohocken Brewing Company), Lost Toys #3 (Wicked Weed), Medora (Wicked Weed).)

The taproom under Tattered Flag had a fully functioning kitchen, a tap system of 12 taps, and offered roughly 750 – 1000~ square feet of seating area.

YAH Brew

Justin Hoak and his wife Aimee Hoak started YAH Brew in May of 2022, getting production and legal rights and licensing as per the state. They have been touring brewfests ever since, brewfests cush as the Drink the Cookie Table brewfests in Pittsburgh (both last year’s and this year’s), as well as the Prototype Invitation Brewfest, Best Brunch Ever, the Hummelstown Winter Fling, and many others. They have done collaborations with lots of top notch breweries including Fourscore Beer Co.

Justin has previously worked as head brewer for Tattered Flag as well as helping out at Spring House Brewing and JoBoy’s Brewing. He is a good friend living just a few blocks away, and I know him and Aimee are throwing their all into the brewery. They have been working tirelessly on getting this up and running. Their beers are definitely not to be missed out on. If you’ve had some of the hazy IPAs, fruited sours, and seltzers from Tattered Flag in the past few years, as well as from YAH Brewing exactly, you’ll know what I mean.

The brewery is female owned, one of only a handful in Pennsylvania.

For more information on YAH Brewing, check them out at their various social media pages:

Their Untappd information is that they are a micro brewery from Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. They have 18 unique beers with 245 ratings and a global average rating of 3.91 (as of 3.2.23). Their Untappd description reads: Production brewery located in Hummelstown, PA. Follow our socials for info on limited releases and festival info so you can enjoy our beer!

Hershey Breweries

Taken from our article on Jigsy’s Old Forge Pizza and Brewpub Opening a Stand at the Hershey Fresh Market:

This means that if you start at 121 Towne Square Drive – at the Hershey’s Farmer Market – you can hit Jigsy’s Old Forge Pizza and Brewpub, Ever Grain Brewing, Shy Bear Brewing, The Vegetable Hunter Brewpub, and then go to Iron Hill Brewing, Tattered Flag Distillery and Brewery Bar (more news on this location in the near future when I’m able to talk about it), Hidden Stills Distillery, Troegs Independent Craft Brewing, Rotunda Brewpub, and back to the Farmer’s Market at 121 Towne Square in just 6.2 miles and 21 minutes driving time.

See the route here: 121 Towne Square Drive to Iron Hill to Tattered Flag Bar to Hidden Stills to Troegs Brewery to Rotunda Brewpub to 121 Towne Square Drive.

If thats not an incredible spot of great breweries and distilleries – I don’t know what it is! (That’s 8 breweries and 2 distilleries all in 6.2 miles of a loop!)

Jigsy’s Old Forge Pizza and Brewpub Expanding to Hershey

121 Towne Square Drive is the location of the Hershey Fresh market. Its right behind the main shopping row on Governor’s Road / RT 422 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. YAH Brewing’s brewery will be where the Tattered Flag Distillery and Brewing Bar is located. (As you can see in the Jigsy’s article, I’m even alluding to YAH Brew taking over the Tattered Flag location.)

Thank you for reading everyone, its so exciting to see Justin and Aimee’s dream coming true. They have worked so hard on this – its incredible to see it coming together. I can’t wait to get out there and check it out in just a short time.

The Battle of the Breweries – 2023

The Battle of the Breweries – 2023

Let’s do it again! Round 3 – FIGHT! We started this tradition in 2021 and continued it in 2022, and now its 2023’s turn to get in at it and have the breweries duke it out. And this time, on top of potentially angering the NCAA with our “March Madness” tournament, we’re also hoping to anger FIFA by stealing an idea from the World Cup.

Every year I like to change up how we do our version of March Madness – The Beer Thrillers Battle of the Breweries. First year we had 48 breweries compete for the prestigious championship, then in the second year we had 128 breweries battle for supremacy, this year, instead of doing a linear tournament, we are going to have a starting group stage similar to that of the World Cup, followed by a ‘knockout’ tournament or normal linear tournament structure. This year we are also beefing it up to 160 breweries fighting for the honors, the glory, the fame, the prestige, the big she bang, The Battle of the Breweries Champion!

The group round will be the same structure as the World Cup’s – the top two “teams” (ie. breweries) with the most points (ie. most votes) move on to the tournament. The big difference is that each group will be five breweries instead of the four teams in the World Cup.

The tournament structure is pretty straight forward. Four conferences of 16 breweries. The groups will be kept for the conferences, so each conference will have 8 groups that are locked in for that conference. After the group round ends, and the breweries advance, I will seed them based on their Untappd scores. (So a 4.04 Untappd rating will most likely result in a 1 Seed, whereas a 3.31 Untappd rating will most likely result in a 16 seed.)

The tournament then runs linear similar to NCAA’s March Madness and other similar bracket tournaments. 16 vs. 1, 15 vs. 2, 14 vs. 3, 13 vs. 4, etc. The winner of each conference will then face off in a fatal four – way to determine the true champion of The Beer Thrillers’ Battle of the Breweries (2023).

Past Tournament Announcements

See our announcement and rules articles for the past tournaments here:

Past Champions

In 2021 we had 48 breweries compete to determine our first inaugural champion. Instead of doing a 64 competitor tournament or 32, we decided to do a crazy thing like pick 48, which resulted in a Triple Threat to determine the winner.

The initial tournament finals consisted of The Isle of Que Brewing vs. Rubber Soul Brewing Company vs. Troegs Independent Craft Brewing Company.

The Isle of Que Brewing emerged victorious.

In our second tournament, we decided we would raise the stakes a bit. Instead of going from 48 to 64 – which would be the logical conclusion – we decided instead to go all the way to 128 competitors. Four conferences of 32 breweries each divided into divisions of 16 (two divisions per conference). Its like I thought we were the NFL or MLB or something.

At the very end we had the four conferences face off in a fatal four – way match up, that saw Von C Brewing vs. Bunnyman Brewing Company vs. Axemann Brewery.

Von C Brewing company emerged victorious from the fatal four – way with barely scraping by Bunnyman Brewing Company in a very close and hard fought battle. (Both breweries amassed over 3,000 votes!)

You can read about the winners here:

The Rules

There’s gotta be some kind of rules to this madness right? This madness of March (and well, this year the end of February as well… and yes… also a bit of April as the tournament goes into that month as well). So… what are the rules involved?

To pull straight the initial March Madness / Battle of the Breweries post:

So how’s this going to work? Who all is invited? What all breweries are going to be in it? How many breweries? How’s voting going to work? Who decides whose in and whose out? Whats the seeding? Why is Rick such a jerk to Morty? Why is Jurassic Bark the saddest episode of Futurama ever? Why is it also B. Kline’s favorite episode? What does that say about him? Why is the sky blue?

Ok…. enough with the questions!

March Madness (2021) – The Battle of the Breweries (2021)

Firstly, the only way for a brewery to be eligible for the Battle of Breweries… is quite simple – be a brewery that a member of The Beer Thrillers has visited in person. So that means all 160 breweries involved were visited by myself – B. Kline, Amy, Josh, Leela, or Scarlet. (And yea… there’s gonna be quite a bit of overlap there with Leela and Scarlet.)

After the 160 breweries were picked, they were then randomly placed in each of the conferences. (Random number generator.) They were then once again random number generated (RNG) into their different groups. Once we come out of the group stage, they will be seeded based on their Untappd global average rating (as of February 24th, 2023). In the case of ties (ie. a 3.63 and a 3.63), I will flip a coin to see who gets the higher seed; in the case of multiples (for example three breweries with a 3.63), I will roll for it or use a random number generator. Remember – I was once (…ok, still am) a huge nerd, so I have D3’s, D4’s, D6’s, D10’s, D12’s, and D20’s. (I even have a D100 laying around somewhere in my office.)

Voting

Each day you will be able to come to the site to make your votes in the polls. It will be set-up by IPS, so it limits you to voting just once per day per vote. You can vote as many times as you want per round, but only once per day.

Rounds will be last one week (ending on Sunday nights at 11:59:59 PM EST) and the new week of voting starting up the next day (Monday) when I get the articles posted (usually around 8:30 – 9:30 AM EST).

The first round – the group stage – will begin Monday February 27th, 2023. This will most likely be around 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM. There will be more details in each voting page’s article. There will be an individual post for each conference.

The last week – the fatal four-way will be two weeks. This will give adequate time for voting for the championship.

Conferences

In the past two years I used the names of professional wrestlers (Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, The Rock, Ric Flair, Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, Charlotte Flair, Ronda Rousey, etc.) for each conference, but I think this is a bit confusing, and will instead switch it up. I know using ‘hop’ names is the typical go to for other tournament brackets around this time, but it does seem the most straight forward and keeps it with the ‘beer’ theme. So for this year, we will be going with hop names.

Those hop names and thus the conference names are:

  • Chinook
  • Nugget
  • Saaz
  • Walhalla

I chose four different varieties that I grow at home / (aka The Beer Thrillers Headquarters). Each of these conferences will have 8 groups of 5 breweries each, after the group stage each conference will have 16 breweries in a tournament.

Let’s take an early look at what breweries are in what conferences:

Chinook

  1. Hackensack Brewing Company
  2. Chubby Squirrel Brewing Company
  3. Compass Mill Tap Room
  4. Acclamation Brewing Company
  5. Forbes Trail Brewing
  6. Bronx Brewery
  7. Dancing Gnome Brewing
  8. Vanish Farmwoods Brewery
  9. Bright Path Brewing Company

Wrapping Things Up Here

This article has taken me the better part of my entire evening last night after work, and all of this morning. It is seriously no simple task getting these groups into places. Tomorrow I will roll for the groups, and make the announcements on Facebook, maybe a blog post as well. Thank you all for the support with this big under taking.

Thank You For Reading

Ok, Amy and I are about heading out for our trip down to the Maryland border and hitting some breweries. We were supposed to do this trip last week, but the stomach bug hit Amy so we stayed home. We are also planning on then going to the Harrisburg Heat game tonight for their alumni night (Scoop and Wilsbach are being inducted into their Hall of Fame). So I gotta wrap this up so we can get going to our several breweries and then Heat game. I started this article last night after work and our plans, so I started this around 9:45 PM, and worked on it until about 1:30 AM, before going to bed. Scarlet has been a fussy mess all morning, and I’ve been up since 5:30 AM trying to work on this and help her at the same time. But its now finally done nearly at 10:30 AM.

Ok, thanks for reading. Any questions, comments, suggestions, etc, please leave in the comments. Or e-mail us directly at thebeerthrillers@gmail.com.

Gorilla Brewing Company

Before getting into the press release; lets quickly shout out to Gorilla Brewing. They reached out to me about doing some press release coverage for them here on the blog. This is the first of us writing about them for the blog. You will see more press releases from them in the future.

Gorilla Brewing Company Unleashes Dual Collaboration Beers: Godfather and Cherry Bomb

Gorilla Brewing Company, Galmegi Brewing Company, Daedo Brewing, and Beerroom; are proud to announce the release of two collaborative beers – Godfather and Cherry Bomb.

Ryan Blocker, Head Brewer at Galmegi Brewing, says:

“Working on the Godfather with Gorilla and Daedo was a great experience, and the final product is a testament to the hard work and dedication put into every step of the brewing process. We are thrilled to share this unique and flavorful beer with our fans.”

Ryan Blocker – Head Brewer for Galmegi Brewing Company

Cherry Berry is a collaboration with Gorilla Brewing Company and Beerroom. Cherry Berry is a perfect blend of black cherry and blackberry flavors, with lactose and a hint of vanilla bean. Infused with Mackinac and Sabro hops, the beer boasts a rich, purple hue, a tantalizing aroma, and an explosion of flavors in every sip.

Paul Edwards, CEO and Head Brewer of Gorilla Brewing Company, says:

“We wanted to create a beer that was both delicious and visually stunning, and the Cherry Berry Fruit Bomb delivers on both fronts. We’re proud to have worked with Beerroom to create this beer, and we can’t wait for our fans to try it.”

Paul Edwards – CEO and Head Brewer of Gorilla Brewing Company

Jaeheung ahn, CEO of Beerroom, adds:

“At Beerroom, we’re always striving to create innovative and exciting beers, and the Cherry Berry is no exception. We’re confident that fans of Gorilla Brewing will love this beer as much as we do, and we’re excited to share it with them.”

Galmegi Brewing Company

Their Untappd description reads: We started off as band of enthusiastic home brewers from all corners of the globe. Fortunately, people liked what we were doing so, we kept on doing it. In May of 2014 we opened our second location, a brewery, just around the corner, up from the beach. Daedo Brewing

As per Untappd – Daedo Brewing is a micro brewery from Dongdeok-ro, 대구 South Korea. They have 56 unique beers and 762 ratings with a global average rating of 3.87 (as of 2.12.23). Their Untappd description reads: Daedo Brewery is a new brewpub located on Kim Kwang Seok street, one of the most famous locations in Daegu. The original building was constructed as a makgeolli factory in 1953 and was named Daedo Yangjojang. (yangjojang is the Korean word for any building that produces alcoholic beverages) The makgeolli factory closed in 1997 and was left unattended for a long time, however in February, 2019, the building was renovated and reopened. We reused the name ‘대도양조장’, but now instead of makgeolli we make craft beer. Our brewery has six 1000 liter (7BBL) fermentation tanks, used to make a variety of different beer. There are many people unfamiliar with craft beer in Daegu, so we have a range of beers on our tap list , from easy to drink styles, like traditional Munich style Helles, German Pilsner, as well as an American style IPA, an Imperial Stout, a Ginger lime sour beer(sours are a new trend in craft beer these days) and Pink Stout using the locally roasted coffee beans. The brewery has two floors of seating, as well as open air seats outside, and can serve up to 150 people at a time. We have fourteen different beers available on our tap lists, with twelve of the beers produced locally at the Daedo Brewery.

You can find them at the following social media pages:

Thanks For Reading

Just as I said above, I would like to thank Erin from Gorilla Brewing Company’s marketing team for reaching out to me about writing this article. They have asked me to cover press releases going forward in the future, and I will be helping out with that.

She has been generous enough to send a care package to me as well (including a t – shirt, a beanie, a glass, and some beer). It’s all greatly appreciated.

While I’m in the process of saying thank yous – let me say thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read, and follow, and share, and subscribe, and like, and comment, and etc, and etc, and etc, the blog. It really does mean a whole lot to us. All of your views, visits, shares, comments, likes, on the blog – and our different various social media platforms – all help us get viewed even more. Its amazing how simple a ‘like’ click or a ‘share’ on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit, or any other social media platform really does for the blog.

Yesterday was a busy day – was planning on getting a fair bit of writing done, but didn’t get a chance to with how busy the day was. We went to ZeroDay Brewing for lunch, over to Urban Churn Creamery for an Eagles cheesecake for the Super Bowl today, then I helped Ming and Don move from Mount Joy to Linglestown. Which took all day. Then helped Ming pick up some 15′ planks of wood for his future dining table in Mechanicsburg, so we stopped at Ever Grain where I picked up some four packs of Sorbetto 56 and Joshua Group. Amy is preparing to write a new beer review based on Sorbetto 56; so look for that in the future.

Today is now the Super Bowl. Who do you all think will win? I’m predicting Eagles. I’m predicting 27 – 17. Let me know your predictions in the comments or on our Facebook page.

And one last thank you to everyone. Cheers to the Super Bowl and cheers to the weekend!

Cheers All!

Troegs Independent Craft Brewing – Facebook Post

Not Resting on Their Laurels

As part of their scratch system, Troegs Independent Craft Brewing has been announcing several scratch releases, like their upcoming Scratch 478 – Hazy IPA. They are churning out a lot of new beers, keeping their “beer game fresh”.

They’ve also announced the seasonal / yearly release of Hop Horizon as well. Which is part of their rotational hop series.

Our Troegs Articles

Wanting to do a deeper dive into Troegs Brewing? Then check out these other articles we’ve written about Troegs Independent Craft Brewing:

For More Information on Troegs Independent Craft Brewing

As per Untappd, Troegs Independent Craft Brewing is a regional brewery from Hershey, Pennsylvania. With 125 unique beers (editor note – which is massively off, since they are releasing Scratch 478 soon), and over 2 million ratings. They have a global average rating of 3.79 (as of 2.7.23). Their Untappd description reads: Founded in Harrisburg Pennsylvania in 1997 by brothers John and Chris Trogner, Tröegs Independent Brewing is driven by a sense of adventure and curiosity. Perhaps you’ve been lucky enough to try one or two of the hundreds of experimental Scratch Series beers we’ve brewed over the years. Whether you’re already a member of our extended family or you’re just getting to know our brewery, there’s always something new to discover with Tröegs.

Thanks For Reading

As always, thank you everyone for reading! Today was a busy day with work and the site blowing up with the news of LoveDraft’s Brewery Being Sabotaged. That’s certainly horrible news. So I’m glad this is at least a little bit more upbeat. The site and blog certainly have been busy. I hope you all have been liking all of the articles that we’ve been writing and posting.

If you do like the articles and our writing, please be sure to like, follow, subscribe, comment, share, etc, etc, etc. It really does help. Its all free, and it helps us with the various Google, Facebook, metaverse, etc, algorithms.

Speaking of writing – we’ve been approached by a few breweries and marketing groups for writing projects. So stay tuned for more information on these projects coming soon.

One week done with the month and we have been very busy. 2023 is turning out to be a much busier year for the blog. Ironically – it seems that we are doing less travel this year than last year (thanks Scarlet…). Doing more and more writing, but not hitting the road for travelogues and other activities, and not doing as much out and about as we did last year. By this point last year we had went to the Cushwa 5th Anniversary Celebration Beerfest, did a big trip through Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, as well as separate trips to Virginia. This year so far we’ve just made the one trip out to Hackensack and Little Ferry for Hackensack Brewing, Brix City Brewing, and The Alementary.

But don’t worry, we are definitely going to be doing a lot of trips once the weather starts warming up. We have the Craft Brewers Conference in Nashville in May. The annual trip to AC for the AC Beer and Music Fest. As well as planning a big trip up through Vermont, New Hampshire, etc.

So there will certainly be a lot of articles and travelogues for the year. I promise!
