Java Head Stout by Troegs Brewing (original logo)

Troegs Brewing is Bringing Back a Fan Favorite – Java Head Stout

A fan favorite is coming back to Troegs Independent Brewing – Java Head Stout! Originally replaced by Grand Cacao back in 2020 as the stout on record at Troegs. One of the most frequent questions at the Troegs General Store has been “when is Java Head coming back” and its safe to say — soon!

No official date on the release or when it will be coming back exactly, but there is details to discuss as it is currently fermenting. First, it will most likely be back end of October / beginning of November, and it will be in 16 oz pounder cans rather than the previous bottles. (Like most beers at Troegs Brewery, they have shifted from being produced in bottles to that of cans.) It will also most likely be a temporary or a once and done release, and not become a seasonal or flagship release, and it will also most likely be a brewery exclusive or near brewery exclusive (perhaps a few local distributors like West Connection Beer Vault and Breski’s Beverages getting it as well).

Java Head Stout

From the original entry at Troegs Brewing’s website:

JavaHead is like a day at Tröegs; it’s hard to tell where the coffee ends and the beer begins. This creamy oatmeal stout is infused with locally roasted, cold steeped coffee to release subtle hints of cocoa, roasted nuts and dark mocha.

Java Head Stout – Troegs Website

Its safe to assume that the beer will be nearly identical to the original brew, but might not be 100% the exact same recipe. However, the original was a 7.5% ABV and had 60 IBUs, and used Chocolate, Crystal, Oats, Pilsner, Roast malts and Cascade, Chinook, Cluster hops.

We will release more information when we have a date and when it will be coming out! So be sure to check back soon!

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a special occasion when America pauses to honor the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in service to our Armed Forces.

It also signifies the unofficial beginning of summer, a season for cookouts and gatherings with friends and family over food and drinks. To make these celebrations even better, you’re going to need beer. Here are some fantastic new craft beer variety packs that are making buying in bulk exciting again!

Variety Packs

Perfect for Memorial Day picnics, get togethers, and grilling hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill – variety packs are a perfect pick-up item to grab at your local brewery (or grocery store or beverage distributor) and bring to that shindig.

Craft beer variety packs have become increasingly popular among beer enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike. These packs offer a selection of different beers from a single brewery, providing an excellent way to explore a range of flavors and styles without committing to a full six-pack of one type. For newcomers to the craft beer scene, variety packs serve as a gateway to discovering personal preferences, whether it be hoppy IPAs, rich stouts, or refreshing pilsners. This diversity within a single purchase can turn any beer tasting into a mini-adventure, perfect for gatherings and parties.

Beyond the sheer enjoyment of diverse flavors, craft beer variety packs also showcase the creativity and skill of the brewers. Many breweries use these packs to highlight seasonal or limited-edition brews alongside their core offerings. This not only gives drinkers a chance to taste unique and experimental beers but also helps breweries gain feedback on new recipes. The inclusion of special and sometimes exclusive beers in these packs can drive excitement and anticipation among craft beer fans, making the act of unboxing and sampling each beer a thrilling experience.

Additionally, craft beer variety packs are an economical choice for those looking to stock up for events or simply fill their fridge. Buying in bulk often comes with cost savings compared to purchasing individual packs of different beers. Moreover, these packs are convenient, offering an all-in-one solution for catering to diverse tastes within a group. Whether for a casual barbecue, a festive celebration, or a quiet night of beer tasting, craft beer variety packs provide a versatile and appealing option that enhances the enjoyment of high-quality, artisanal beers.

Summer of Sunshine

Troegs Brewing Summer of Sunshine Variety Pack

Hershey, Pennsylvania-based Tröegs Independent Brewing is embracing summer with a new variety 15-pack that includes a beloved year-round classic and four exclusive beers available only in the Summer of Sunshine Variety 15-Pack.

Here’s how the brewery describes the contents:

  • Sunshine Pilsner (4.5% ABV) – This award-winning American craft pilsner features a complex balance of two-row barley, zesty Saaz hops, and lager yeast. Secondary fermentation creates natural carbonation, delivering soft notes of fresh-cut straw and flowering herbs.
  • Sunshine Salt + Lime Lager (4.3% ABV) – This bright and crisp lager offers a zesty hint of lime and a touch of salt, perfect for transporting you to the shore. Exclusive to the Summer of Sunshine Variety Pack, it’s the ideal beach beer.
  • Summer’s Here Lager (4.2% ABV) – Made with pilsner malt and flaked rice, this exclusive lager employs krausening for a crisp finish and subtle fruity esters. Dry-hopped with Citra and Saaz, it showcases notes of bright citrus, lemon rind, and flowering herbs in a pale white-gold brew.
  • Leisure Cruise Raspberry Wheat (4.7% ABV) – This Raspberry Wheat Ale is a classic lighter-bodied beer with big flavor. Real raspberries added after fermentation ensure bright pops of fruit are front and center.
  • Perpetual Haze (7.5% ABV) – Combining the clean, crisp bitterness of a West Coast IPA with the softness of a hazy, this beer features pale malts for underlying complexity. Raw wheat, London 3 yeast, and vigorous dry-hopping create a haze that cradles a citrusy hop blend, with Citra and Cashmere unlocking juicy notes of orange, passionfruit, and nectarine.

Perpetual Exploration Variety Pack Volume 2

Perpetual Exploration Volume 2

If IPAs are your thing, the Tröegs Perpetual Exploration Variety Pack Volume 2 offers a fantastic selection of the brewery’s finest India Pale Ales, including:

  • Tröegs Perpetual IPA (7.5% ABV) – This Imperial Pale Ale is perpetually cycled using the brewery’s HopBack vessel and dry-hopping technology, creating a robust beer that can withstand the season’s cooling temperatures.
  • Tröegs Graffiti Highway (6% ABV) – This India Pale Ale features bright citrus and tropical fruit notes. Like many of Tröegs’ beers, this IPA began as a series of test batches in the brewery’s Research & Development brewhouse, known as the Scratch Lab.
  • Tröegs Field Study (6.2% ABV) – A slightly hazy IPA with vibrant grapefruit, mango, pear, and melon notes, it evolved from the brewery’s small-batch, experimental Scratch Series.
  • Tröegs LolliHop (8.2% ABV) – This Imperial IPA boasts a slightly hazy character with bright notes of pear, citrus, and a hint of melon, built on a sturdy foundation of Pennsylvania-grown Rustic pale malt.

Some of the Troegs best summer time IPAs all in one package. Perfect for the unofficial kick off to the summer. Troegs Brewing is open Memorial Day – 11:30 AM to 9:00 PM.

Dogfish Head Off Centered Variety Pack

Dogfish Head Off Centered Variety Pack

Milton, Delaware-based Dogfish Head’s Variety Pack features two fan-favorites, 60 Minute IPA and Slightly Mighty, along with the new Tasty Traveler Lager, and the Delaware-centric Blue Hen Pilsner, a beer developed at its small-batch brewpub in Rehoboth.

  • 60 Minute IPA (6.0% ABV) – This IPA is continually hopped for 60 minutes with a boatload of intense Northwest hops. The result is a brew that is abundantly hoppy without being overly bitter, showcasing bold citrusy and grassy hop flavors.
  • Slightly Mighty (4.9% ABV) – The top-selling lo-cal IPA in America, Slightly Mighty is a full-flavored IPA with just 95 calories per can. Brewed with a hint of monk fruit for added body and complexity, it delivers tropical notes of pineapple, coconut, mango, and citrus while being light in calories and carbohydrates.
  • Tasty Traveler Lager (5% ABV) – Making its debut, Tasty Traveler is a crisp, refreshing lager brewed with Oaxacan green corn, Baja Salicornia, sea salt, and Mexican lime juice, offering a unique and invigorating flavor profile.
  • Blue Hen Pilsner (4.8% ABV) – This crisp and refreshing pilsner is brewed with just four ingredients: water, yeast, earthy Saaz hops, and Delaware-grown and malted barley. The label pays homage to Dogfish Head’s home state, featuring the Delaware state bird and colors reminiscent of the Delaware state flag.

Widmer Brothers Hefe Variety Pack

Widmer Brothers Hefe Variety Pack

Portland, Oregon-based Widmer Brothers Brewing is celebrating Memorial Day Weekend with a new variety 12-pack that highlights their renowned American Wheat Beer style. The Widmer Brothers’ Hefe Variety Pack includes their flagship Hefeweizen along with several unique wheat ale variations.

Here’s what’s inside:

  • Hefe (4.9% ABV) – First brewed in 1986, Hefe was a groundbreaking creation for the Widmer Brothers. With its floral citrus notes, naturally cloudy body, and refreshing finish, Hefe was unlike anything they had ever tasted. This golden, cloudy brew became an international staple of craft brewing, known as America’s Original Hefeweizen.
  • Imperial Hefe (8.0% ABV) – A bolder version of the original American Hefeweizen, Imperial Hefe features a high ABV of 8.0% and prominent tropical hop notes. This beer exemplifies balance, offering a bold wheat flavor while remaining smooth, delicious, and elegant.
  • Widberry Hefe (4.9% ABV) – Infused with the sweet and juicy flavors of blackberries, Widberry Hefe combines these luscious berries with their signature wheat beer, capturing the essence of summer in a can. Refreshingly smooth and fruity, it offers a unique drinking experience.
  • Apricot Hefe (4.9% ABV) – Originally introduced as Velvet Summer, the brewery’s summer seasonal in 2023, this fan-favorite is now available year-round in the variety pack. Brewed with sun-kissed apricots, Apricot Hefe delivers a refreshingly fruity, bright, and juicy flavor profile perfect for any season.

Purchasing

Each of the variety packs can be bought at their respective breweries (Troegs Brewing in Hershey, PA; Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton, Delaware and Rehobeth Beach, Delaware; and Widmer Brothers in Portland, Oregon). As well as the Dogfish Head and Troegs Brewing variety packs are in their full distribution footprints (look for it in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Maryland, Washington DC, and surrounding areas). The Widmer Brothers Variety Pack is located throughout their distribution footprint in the upper Northwest Corner of the United States. As well as in select stores throughout the country.

Nugget Nectar Is Being Released the Day After Christmas https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/12/18/nugget-nectar-is-being-released-the-day-after-christmas/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=nugget-nectar-is-being-released-the-day-after-christmas Mon, 18 Dec 2023 18:30:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13322 Christmas Present

Its an extra Christmas present – the day after Christmas! Nugget Nectar is releasing on December 26th, 2023.

One of the most anticipated releases every year, is coming earlier than in past years, this time coming as early as December 26th. Nugget Nectar is one of the most anticipated seasonal releases at Troegs Independent Brewing.

Seeing distribution immediately as well as being released at the Hershey brewery location itself, Nugget Nectar will be available in 12 oz cans, 12 oz bottles, as well as the 16 oz pounder cans.

Despite being released in 2023 – Nugget Nectar will be accompanied by its annual “First Squeeze” events, this time in 2024. (So no doubling down of First Squeezes in 2023.) Look for January for any First Squeeze events. You can stay up to date on that at the Troegs website: Nugget Nectar – First Squeeze.

Nugget Nectar

Nugget Nectar is an Imperial (Double) Red Ale. Not an IPA as sometimes thought or believed, or misperceived as. Its considered a Red Ale (or Amber Ale). It clocks in at 7.5% ABV (the same as their Perpetual IPA), and it has a listed 93 IBU.

According to Untappd it has over 479,900 ratings and a global average rating of 3.99 (as of 12.18.23). The Untappd description for it reads: Squeeze those hops for all they’re worth and prepare to pucker up: Nugget Nectar Ale, will take hopheads to nirvana with a heady collection of Nugget, Warrior and Tomahawk hops. Starting with the same base ingredients of our flagship HopBack Amber Ale, Nugget Nectar intensifies the malt and hop flavors to create an explosive hop experience.

You’ll be able to find Nugget Nectar at the Troegs Brewery at 200 East HersheyPark Drive, or throughout their distribution footpath. If unsure how to find it – you can use their Brewfinder at: Find Troegs – Troegs Brewfinder.

Mad Elf Grand Cru

Tröegs Independent Brewing announces the release of Mad Elf Grand Cru, a limited “director’s cut” of its iconic holiday ale, Mad Elf.

Do you like Mad Elf? Do you like it for the cherries, the honey, the sweetness? Maybe wish it was a bit tarter? To give you a little bit of a pucker? Then if so – you’ll love Mad Elf Grand Cru. The easiest way to discern the difference between the two is Mad Elf is sweeter and Mad Elf Grand Cru is tarter.

Mad Elf Grand Cru has Munich, chocolate, and pilsner malts and features a large addition of local Pennsylvania wildflower honey. It’s also fermented with the same in house Belgian yeast strain as Mad Elf, which gives it flavors of cinnamon, clove, and allspice.

Tarter

To get that tarter flavor for Mad Elf Grand Cru – instead of using the five cherries they do in Mad Elf, they restrictively only use Balaton cherries to impart notes of tart pie filling. They also leave the skins of the cherries on which adds to the tartness, whereas with Mad Elf they remove the skins of the cherries before brewing.

Relying on this sole cherry with the skin on also imparts a more maroon, burgundy, rich coloring than the redder hue that Mad Elf has.

Both the Mad Elf Grand Cru and the Mad Elf itself come in at 11% ABV. Similar IBU’s as well.

Cork and Caged

Unlike the regular Mad Elf – the Grand Cru (2023 vintage) only comes in the cork and caged four packs (or single bottles). The cork and caged bottles are 375 ml bottles (in past years, namely 2020 and 2018, Mad Elf Grand Cru also came in the 750 ml bottles).

In the general store at Troegs Brewery a four pack of Mad Elf Grand Cru costs 19.99$.

Putting this beer in cork and cage bottles helps give it that extra special touch. The corks are great at keeping pressure in and oxygen out. Since Grand Cru is a beer many people like to age, that’s a big plus.

Troegs Brewing Releasing Cyclops Teardrops This Thursday https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/09/24/troegs-brewing-releasing-cyclops-teardrops-this-thursday/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=troegs-brewing-releasing-cyclops-teardrops-this-thursday Mon, 25 Sep 2023 01:51:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=12517

Cyclops Teardrops – A Double IPA by Troegs Independent Brewing is coming out on Thursday, September 28th. (photo courtesy of Troegs Independent Brewing)

A Fan Favorite Returns

A recent Scratch Series fan favorite is returning at Troegs Brewery on Thursday – this time as a full production beer. Cyclops Teardrops builds off of Scratch 492, a Double IPA that was a recent big hit at the end of summer at Troegs Brewery in Hershey, PA.

As August ended and Scratch 492 left the taps in the tasting room and general store at Troegs Brewery, a lot of customers and fans were left asking, “When is Scratch 492 coming back?” Well, in just a few short days they’ll get their answer and wish as Cyclops Teardrops appears for the first time on taps and in cans at the Hershey brewery.

Cyclops Teardrops

No official promotional material has been released other than a single image – can art (shown above). So we don’t have the exact details of the beer yet, other than that we’ve been told its Scratch 492 come back. Scratch 492 was the culmination of several scratch beers, the top of the line, of a strong pedigree of Double IPAs.

All beers at Troegs Independent Brewing that receive a name and become either seasonals, year rounds, or even limited editions started out as scratches. They have been tweaked and changed slightly and re – released several times as different scratches. Nimble Giant for example was the culmination of six scratches.

(The scratch history for Cyclops Teardrops was: Scratch 492….)

Cyclops Teardrops – The New Scratch 492

This what the Scratch 492 looked like, and what Cyclops Teardrops’ recipe will look (extremely) similar to:

Beer: Scratch 492 – Double IPA
Brewery: Tröegs Independent Brewing
Style: IPA – Imperial / Double
ABV: 8.8%
IBU: N / A
Global Untappd Rating (as of 9.24.23): 3.98
Untappd Description: Scratch #492 combines two recent Scratch beer recipes – the grain bill of one with the hop combo of another – and jumps up to a Double IPA! Our haze-bolstering blend of pale malt, chit malt, flaked oats, wheat and spelt lays down the backbone, while mash-hopping with Mittelfrüh keeps the bitterness at bay. Azacca in the kettle lends citrus notes, while the dry-hop combo of Azacca, Simcoe and Strata coaxes aromas of tangerine, passionfruit and apricot. London 3 yeast ties it all together with a blast of tropical fruit.

Release

Cyclops Teardrops will be released at the brewery on Thursday – September, 28th, 2023. It will be available on draft in both the Tasting Room and the General Store, as well as in cans in the General Store. Troegs Brewery opens at 11 AM.

Other interesting news and speculation on release dates: The Big Scratch 500 is due to be arriving on October 5th – and will be both canned and on draft. Want some hints on what it could be? Double of a ground breaking beer from Troegs history…. perhaps?

Also, rumor is that the mischievous Mad Elf will be returning on October 9th. So start making your plans to Hershey accordingly.

Bourbon Barrel Aged Triple Nator Releasing at Troegs Brewery https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/09/07/bourbon-barrel-aged-triple-nator-releasing-at-troegs-brewery/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bourbon-barrel-aged-triple-nator-releasing-at-troegs-brewery Thu, 07 Sep 2023 17:29:21 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=12385

Bourbon Barrel Aged Triple Nator (courtesy of Troegs Independent Brewing)

The Father of All Nators

So we’ve got the Troegenator, we’ve gotten the Triple Nator… and now we got the grandaddy of them all – the Bourbon Barrel Aged Triple Nator. (And don’t forget, next spring we’ll be getting the Little Nator.)

Troegs Brewing has been releasing some stellar beers recently – Oktoberfest, Hop Cyclone, and now Bourbon Barrel Aged Triple Nator – with Master of Pumpkins coming in two weeks time, as well as a Schwarzbier, a Lemon Raddler, and a Rauchbier for the Oktoberfest; and then in time for Christmas they are bringing the Cookie Stout back out, as well as Naked Elf and of course Mad Elf.

Lots of great beers coming from the fantastic brewery in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Bourbon Barrel Aged Triple Nator

The grandaddy of all the Nators – the Bourbon Barrel Aged Triple Nator is the Triple Nator (Troegenator times three) stored in bourbon barrels and aged for over a year.

Some quick stats on this beast of a beer:

ABV: 14%
IBU: N / A
Malt: Pilsner, Munich, Caramel, Chocolate, Special B
Hops: German Northern Brewer
Yeast: House Lager
Additions: Demerara Sugar, Dark Candi Syrup

From Troegs Brewers and Beer Notes website on the beer:

This is the big, malty and ageable Triple Nator with a bourbon-barrel twist. Munich malt, chocolate malt and Belgian candy sugar deliver deep toffee and complex malt notes, and months in bourbon barrels add hints of toasted coconut, vanilla and molasses. Put it in a glass or put it in your cellar. The next chapter is yours.

We taste: deep toffee, layers of complex malt, hints of toasted coconut, vanilla and molasses

Bourbon Barrel-Aged Triple Nator

Availability

The Bourbon Barrel Aged Triple Nator releases today at the brewery only. Its a part of their splinter series; so you will be able to get it at the bar – in a cork and caged bottle – or from the general store (in cork and caged bottles only). 13.20$ per bottle (or cheaper in a 4 pack). Unknown how long this one will last, so you certainly won’t want to miss out on it.

Tröegs Hop Cyclone Releases Today https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/08/21/troegs-hop-cyclone-releases-today/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=troegs-hop-cyclone-releases-today Mon, 21 Aug 2023 15:27:05 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=12376

Hop Cyclone is Storming In

Hurricane Helms

Move out of the way Field Study… move out of the way Hopora…. there’s a Hurricane … err… I mean Cyclone… Coming through!

The next IPA in the ‘hop cycle’ series releases today – Hop Cyclone. Hop Cyclone takes its name from the dry hopping system that Troegs Brewing has been using for over a decade. This custom piece of brewing equipment creates a whirlpool (or a cyclone if you will) that circulates hops through the fermenter to ensure the hop oils hit every last drop of beer, this way it fully ensures that the entire wort is getting the essential hop oils to give it that bright, juicy, over the top taste.

Grains

The Hop Cyclone is made with pilsner malt, Vienna malt, and wheat – which gives it that hazy look – and helps prop up the hop oils which normally fall off during the fermentation process.

Hops

Possibly the most important part of the Hop Cyclone (outside of the hop cyclone device) is the hops! The hops used for Hop Cyclone are Citra, Sabro, Simcoe, and Sultana. These hops deliver notes of ripe pineapple, soft citrus, and juicy peach.

Hop Cyclone Artwork

The art for the Hop Cyclone was designed by Devin Watson; a former winner of the Art of Troegs.

For the Hop Cyclone label, I imagined these groovy 60’s hop graphics and seeing them swirl all around the can.

Devin Watson

To learn more about the Art of Troegs – visit the Troegs Website about it: Art of Troegs.

Hop Cyclone

Hop Cyclone is 9% ABV, a double New England Hazy IPA. It is available starting today – August 21st – at all Troegs distributors and local shops, as well as at the Troegs Brewery’s tap room and general store. In stores it comes in 16oz four packs.

Tröegs Oktoberfest Returns To Celebrate the German Beer Festival Season https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/08/01/troegs-oktoberfest-returns-to-celebrate-the-german-beer-festival-season/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=troegs-oktoberfest-returns-to-celebrate-the-german-beer-festival-season Tue, 01 Aug 2023 14:41:09 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=12373
Tröegs Oktoberfest Returns

Its August 1st…

Its August 1st…. and so you know what that means…. its time for Oktoberfest! Yes, it doesn’t seem as ridiculous as it sounds. Firstly – Germany celebrates Oktoberfest in September, and secondly, distribution and sales and marketing dictates release dates – not the Pennsylvanian weather.

The Mad Elf has been put away, Christmas in July is over, and now its time to bring out the Oktoberfest. The next great season of the calendar year is upon us.

The general store at Tröegs is cleared out of the Mad Elf, the Mad Elf Grand Cru, and all of the other Christmas in July items and drinks, and now in comes the Oktoberfest, soon will come in Hop Cyclone, and the fall season starts to begin to get underway at Tröegs Brewery.

Tröegs Oktoberfest

By boiling a portion of the mash, we create a bright, dry maltiness.

John Trogner – Tröegs brewmaster and co-founder

Tröegs Oktoberfest is 6.1% ABV – not too high and not too low either. The lager is true to its origins, a good toasty lager that would make any Bavarian happy. Brewer tasting notes for the Oktoberfest are caramel, toasted oats, sweet caramel, fresh baked bread, and flowering herbs.

Troegs Independent Craft Brewing collaborated with German artist David Leutert to make the can label and some of the artwork on merchandise. They have also collaborated with another artist for the tee shirts that will be released to celebrate the Oktoberfest season. Leutert took inspiration from the Bavarian flag and the traditional bier halls of Bavaria to create the design. Festzelte is the Bavarian bier gardens that you see traditionally in pop culture with the tents and the white and blue everywhere.

Lagers

Troegs Brewing has several lagers to scratch any lager fan’s itch. They have the year round Troegenator Double Bock, they have the Sunshine Pilsner, they also currently have When in Doubt (a helles lager) and they’ve had some recent scratch lagers – Scratch 491 and 496 in particular. The Oktoberfest Lager joins their Long Live Lagers celebration series.

Oktoberfest Lager can be found in 12-oz bottles and 12-oz cans. You can use their Tröegs Brew Finder to find it.

Oktoberfest Celebration

Troegs Independent Craft Brewing has announced that their yearly Oktoberfest will be ten days this year. Running from September 14th to September 24th. They will have beer releases, as well as new merchandise for the event, and of course German authentic food and steins as well.
