Java Head Stout by Troegs Brewing (original logo)

Troegs Brewing is Bringing Back a Fan Favorite – Java Head Stout

A fan favorite is coming back to Troegs Independent Brewing – Java Head Stout! Originally replaced by Grand Cacao back in 2020 as the stout on record at Troegs. One of the most frequent questions at the Troegs General Store has been “when is Java Head coming back” and its safe to say — soon!

No official date on the release or when it will be coming back exactly, but there is details to discuss as it is currently fermenting. First, it will most likely be back end of October / beginning of November, and it will be in 16 oz pounder cans rather than the previous bottles. (Like most beers at Troegs Brewery, they have shifted from being produced in bottles to that of cans.) It will also most likely be a temporary or a once and done release, and not become a seasonal or flagship release, and it will also most likely be a brewery exclusive or near brewery exclusive (perhaps a few local distributors like West Connection Beer Vault and Breski’s Beverages getting it as well).

Java Head Stout

From the original entry at Troegs Brewing’s website:

JavaHead is like a day at Tröegs; it’s hard to tell where the coffee ends and the beer begins. This creamy oatmeal stout is infused with locally roasted, cold steeped coffee to release subtle hints of cocoa, roasted nuts and dark mocha.

Java Head Stout – Troegs Website

Its safe to assume that the beer will be nearly identical to the original brew, but might not be 100% the exact same recipe. However, the original was a 7.5% ABV and had 60 IBUs, and used Chocolate, Crystal, Oats, Pilsner, Roast malts and Cascade, Chinook, Cluster hops.

We will release more information when we have a date and when it will be coming out! So be sure to check back soon!

Cordial Elf Grand Cru Releases Thursday https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/01/31/cordial-elf-grand-cru-releases-thursday/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=cordial-elf-grand-cru-releases-thursday Wed, 31 Jan 2024 13:56:38 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13735 Cordial Elf is Back, and This Time Its Gonna be Grand

The Cordial Elf is back for your Valentine’s Day needs, but this year – its gonna be grand!

This year Cordial Elf is using the Mad Elf Grand Cru base (rather than regular Mad Elf like last year), and they will be using a chocolate syrup in the recipe rather than cocoa nibs as an addition. These changes will be giving the beer a more robust, poignant, and rich taste.

Cordial Elf Grand Cru will be releasing tomorrow – Thursday – February 1st, 2024. It will be sold in 16 oz cans, in four packs, cases, and singles, at the Hershey brewery only. This will be a brewery exclusive to the Hershey Troegs Brewery.

On Valentine’s Day there will be a special ‘booked tour’ beer dinner in their barrel room. This will be a multiple course meal and will come with a different Troegs beer pairing for each course. As of right now, the only known beer that will be served is the Cordial Elf Grand Cru.

Tomorrow is the release of Cordial Elf Grand Cru at the Hershey’s Troegs Brewery. The brewery is located at 200 E Hershey Park Drive, Hershey, Pennsylvania. It will be on draft, as well as for sale in the general store. No word on to – go limits as of now.

Troegs Independent Brewing just released Little Nator on Monday, as well as their Perpetual Exploration Variety Pack. Both are available in the general store. They will be releasing First Cut at the end of February.

Little Nator Releases on Monday https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/01/26/little-nator-releases-on-monday/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=little-nator-releases-on-monday Fri, 26 Jan 2024 16:49:19 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13727 Little Nator Releases on Monday – January 29th, 2024

This Monday Troegs Independent Brewing will be releasing their latest seasonal – Little Nator. Its the rascally cousin to the Troegenator! Unlike the bigger 8.2% version, this spring time lager is just 5.5% and perfect to sit and enjoy a few at a time. Lighter in body and in ABV, this is a wonderfully well rounded beer.

Recently releases as an unfiltered version as Scratch 506, the Little Nator makes its debut on Monday – January 29th, 2024 as the new seasonal beer by Troegs Independent Brewing. We first announced the release of this back in September – Troegs Brewing to Release Little Nator in Spring 2024 – and we gave some information on it there:

It will be coming in at 5.5% ABV, and will be sold in 12 oz cans. This will become a seasonal release each year, so it will also be hitting distribution as well.

It is brewed with Pilsner and caramel malts as well as Tradition, El Dorado and Hersbrucker hops.

Troegs Brewing to Release Little Nator in Spring 2024

The Little Nator is coming out in 12 oz cans, 12 oz bottles, and will also be sold in the Perpetual Exploration Variety Pack (PEVP).

Perpetual Exploration Variety Pack

The Perpetual Exploration Variety Pack

The Perpetual Exploration Variety Pack (or PEVP) will also be releasing on Monday – January 29th. This will be taking the place of the “Canthology” series of variety packs that Troegs Independent Brewing has been releasing.

The variety pack is a 12 pack of 12 oz cans, and contains:

  • 3 Perpetual IPA
  • 3 Sunshine Pilsner
  • 3 Little Nator
  • 3 Lollihop DIPA

The variety packs will also see small distribution, and make perfect pick-ups for those who haven’t gotten to try all of Troegs beers before.

Little Nator

The Little Nator is the “rascally cousin” of the Troegenator. Or in Troegs Independent Brewing’s own words:

Here at Tröegs, spring is in the air as we begin to thaw out of winter’s deep freeze. With warm weather on our minds, we’re excited to release our brand new seasonal, Little ‘Nator Springtime Lager.

This light bronze-toned lager is built on a foundation of caramel and pilsner malts to lend notes of crusty bread. Weighing in at 5.5% ABV, Little ‘Nator is modeled as a lighter take on our iconic Troegenator Double Bock.

Hopped with El Dorado, Hersbrucker and Tradition, Little ‘Nator displays hints of stone fruit and delicate floral notes. And, our house lager yeast ties it all together with a touch of fruity esters and a sweet but crisp finish.

Use our Brew Finder to score some in your neck of the woods!

Double Nugget Nectar

Beer: Double Nugget Nectar
Brewery: Tröegs Independent Brewing
Style: Red Ale – Imperial / Double
ABV: 9.5%
IBU: N / A
Untappd Description: Let’s take Nugget and double it. Well, it wasn’t quite that easy, but it sure was a fun balancing act. To start, we boosted the Simcoe, and this complex hop’s notes of apricot, peach rings and bright citrus are the star of the show. Azacca enters the picture to add hints of juicy orchard fruit, and Munich malt brings a bready sweetness. To strike a balancing note, Columbus joins Nugget hops, grounding this limited release with a layer of dank pine.
Global Untappd Rating: 4.23

Perpetual Darkness – Barleywine (by Troegs Independent Brewing) (photo courtesy of Troegs Independent Brewing Company)

Troegs Brewing Releases Perpetual Darkness

What if? Thats a question that gets asked a lot around Troegs Brewery in Hershey, PA. Answering these What If questions is how many of your favorite beers from the brewery have been made. Perpetual Darkness is no different.

Releasing today – December 7th, 2023 – Perpetual Darkness makes its return. An American style Barleywine, its one of the better barleywines in the Central PA area.

As per their Facebook announcement of it:

What if? It’s a question we often ask around here. What if Perpetual were a sort of dirty blonde barleywine? What if we toned down the bitterness but turned up the sticky citrus notes? Enter Perpetual Darkness, a hoppy candy bar gone wild with a silky body and an herbal, resiny finish. We taste: overripe grapefruit, grassy herbs, candied orange. Only available here at the brewery this Thursday in 16-oz cans. troegs.com/visit #Troegs #PerpetualDarkness #Barleywine

Tröegs Independent Brewing – Facebook Post

Personally this is an absolutely fantastic Barleywine, and a great beer all around. I always look forward to its release and try and stock up on it when it comes out. Not enough breweries do barleywines, and its one of my absolute favorite styles.

For more information on Perpetual Darkness, lets check Untappd:

Troegs Brewing Releasing Night Gazer Stout

This Thursday – November 30th, 2023 – Troegs Independent Brewing is releasing Night Gazer Stout at their Hershey brewery. This will be a brewery exclusive. A potentially one – off beer similar to Cyclops Teardrops (insofar as production).

Troegs Independent Brewing usually follows a pattern for their releases. Scratch Series beers and possible one – off production releases occur on Thursdays. Big beers, seasonals, or the franchise standards (Blizzard of Hops, Double Blizzard, Hop Cyclone, Nugget Nectar, Mad Elf, Nimble Giant, etc.) are released on Mondays.

Night Gazer Stout

From the Troegs.com website:

  • ABV:
    • 7.1%
  • Malt:
    • Pilsner, Roasted Barley, Black Patent, Chocolate, Crystal 80, Special B, Flaked Oats
  • Hops:
    • Columbus, Simcoe
  • Yeast:
    • House Ale

There’s a starman out there, ready to blow your mind. Built on a galaxy’s worth of oats and black malts, Night Gazer is an expansive beer for your celestial musings. This supple stout’s notes of dark roast, toffee and cocoa will serve as your guiding star to the cosmos.

Night Gazer Stout – Troegs.com

From their Facebook page, posted earlier today:

Coming Thursday! An expansive beer to aid your celestial musings, Night Gazer Stout is built on a galaxy’s worth of oats and black malts. Supple notes of dark roast, toffee and cocoa combine in this brewery-only release – a guiding light to the cosmos. Find the limited run of draft and 16-oz. cans here in Hershey. troegs.com/visit #PABeer #Troegs #Stout

Tröegs Independent Brewing – Facebook

Night Gazer Stout will be available only in house at the Troegs Brewery on Hersheypark Drive (Hershey, PA). It will be available on draft as well as in 16 oz pounder cans – (four packs, cases, and singles in the General Store fridge). You can get crowler and growler fills as well.

Rumor mill is that Troegs might be seeing how this stout does and putting this out onto the distribution market going forward and scaling Grand Cacao back and keeping that as an in – house beer only. (No official word has been said yet.)

Upcoming Schedule

From here to the end of the year Troegs Independent Brewing has some decently big heavy releases coming out. Nugget Nectar is looking to be making its yearly return – this year soon after Christmas – very soon after Christmas – with a tentative date being 12.26 (the very day after Christmas). Also upcoming is a Black Cherry Limeade, another Lager scratch, and potentially Peach Orangeade (returning).

So stay tuned for these future releases.

I know I can’t wait to get back from AC (Atlantic City) and get to try the stout, as well as the new Scratch 505 Double IPA (DIPA).

You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.

Its The Most Wonderful Beer of the Year

Its that wondrous time again! Its the Most Wonderful Beer of the Year time! This Monday – November 6th, 2023 – Troegs Brewing releases their Most Wonderful Beer of the Year sampler pack.

This twelve pack is brimming with Holiday Joy – packed with three 12 oz Mad Elf cans, three 12 oz Naked Elf cans, three 12 oz Gingerbread Cookie Stout cans, and three 12 oz Perpetual IPA cans.

Currently this will be the only way to get Naked Elf and the Gingerbread Cookie Stout – until November 16th when they will be released in cans and draft at the brewery.

What’s In the Box

The Most Wonderful Beer of the Year

Getting nicknamed the “blackout box” by co – workers at Troegs Brewery due to the ABV of all of the beers inside it; this is certainly a wintry beer box. The lowest ABV beer is Perpetual IPA with 7.5% ABV.

The box is made up of twelve 12 oz cans. Its one half of a case and sells for 22.99$ at the Troegs Brewery’s General Store. This lets it fit simply in your car, as well as easy to buy. Currently there are two exclusives included in the box – The Naked Elf (a Belgian Strong Ale, a cousin of the Mad Elf), and the Gingerbread Cookie Stout (a pastry stout). Both of these will be available individually later on – but are currently only available in this box sampler.

The breakdown of the box:

  • 3 Perpetual IPA (IPA)
  • 3 Mad Elf (Belgian Strong Ale)
  • 3 Naked Elf (Belgian Strong Ale)
  • 3 Gingerbread Cookie Stout (Pastry Stout)

Mad Elf Ale

It’s time! The Mad Elf is here with its nuanced blend of sweet and tart cherries, Pennsylvania honey, chocolate malt and a hint of mischief. The essence of this legendary holiday ale, along with its ruby red glow, is born from five varieties of tree-ripened cherries. Local wildflower honey sweetens the celebration, and a spicy Belgian yeast adds subtle notes of cinnamon, clove and allspice. It’s not the holidays until you’ve had your first Mad Elf. We taste: cherries, local honey, chocolate malt, subtle spices.

Naked Elf Ale

Gone are the cherries, honey and chocolate malt that dress up our holiday favorite Mad Elf, leaving “him” stark-raving nude. It’s all about the bare necessities – malt and yeast – to lend notes of cinnamon, allspice, clove and tangy fruity esters to this classic Belgian-style ale. We taste: cinnamon, allspice, clove, tangy fruity esters.

Gingerbread Cookie Stout

Gingerbread is a holiday tradition that begs for a robust dark beer. Loaded with oats, roasted barley and chocolate malts, we’ve elevated this pastry stout to suit your baking rituals. Additions of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, vanilla and clove help hone in on grandma’s time-honored recipe. While others may crumble, Gingerbread Cookie Stout is more than icing on the cake! We taste: ginger, caramelized sugar, dark chocolate.

Perpetual IPA

At Tröegs, artisanal meets mechanical in a state of IPA we call Perpetual. Cycling through our HopBack vessel and dry-hopping method, this bold Imperial Pale Ale emerges rife with sticky citrus rind, pine balm and tropical fruit. We taste: citrus, notes of pine, subtle grain.

The Most Wonderful Weekend

Upcoming, Troegs Brewery will be hosting their Most Wonderful Weekend event. This will be running from Thursday – November 16th, 2023 til November 19th, 2023.

It will feature the release of Naked Elf and the Gingerbread Cookie Stout (in both cans as well as on draft). The general store will also be selling a limited run of Mad Elf cans with original label art as well as art of the various ‘Mad Elves’ over the years. These will be 16 oz pounder cans.

The tasting room will have several specialty dishes just for the weekend, and at the bar they will have a firkin of Blizzard of Hops, as well as different give aways (including Santa Hats, glassware, etc.). The event will last the weekend long.

Tröegs will also be accepting new, unwrapped toys as part of its Perpetual Giving campaign to benefit Hershey Cocoa Packs

Tröegs Independent Brewing Mad Elf Grand Cru Returns In Limited Cork and Cage Bottles https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/11/01/troegs-independent-brewing-mad-elf-grand-cru-returns-in-limited-cork-and-cage-bottles/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=troegs-independent-brewing-mad-elf-grand-cru-returns-in-limited-cork-and-cage-bottles Thu, 02 Nov 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=13016

Mad Elf Grand Cru

Tröegs Independent Brewing announces the release of Mad Elf Grand Cru, a limited “director’s cut” of its iconic holiday ale, Mad Elf.

Do you like Mad Elf? Do you like it for the cherries, the honey, the sweetness? Maybe wish it was a bit tarter? To give you a little bit of a pucker? Then if so – you’ll love Mad Elf Grand Cru. The easiest way to discern the difference between the two is Mad Elf is sweeter and Mad Elf Grand Cru is tarter.

Mad Elf Grand Cru has Munich, chocolate, and pilsner malts and features a large addition of local Pennsylvania wildflower honey. It’s also fermented with the same in house Belgian yeast strain as Mad Elf, which gives it flavors of cinnamon, clove, and allspice.

Tarter

To get that tarter flavor for Mad Elf Grand Cru – instead of using the five cherries they do in Mad Elf, they restrictively only use Balaton cherries to impart notes of tart pie filling. They also leave the skins of the cherries on which adds to the tartness, whereas with Mad Elf they remove the skins of the cherries before brewing.

Relying on this sole cherry with the skin on also imparts a more maroon, burgundy, rich coloring than the redder hue that Mad Elf has.

Both the Mad Elf Grand Cru and the Mad Elf itself come in at 11% ABV. Similar IBU’s as well.

Cork and Caged

Unlike the regular Mad Elf – the Grand Cru (2023 vintage) only comes in the cork and caged four packs (or single bottles). The cork and caged bottles are 375 ml bottles (in past years, namely 2020 and 2018, Mad Elf Grand Cru also came in the 750 ml bottles).

In the general store at Troegs Brewery a four pack of Mad Elf Grand Cru costs 19.99$.

Putting this beer in cork and cage bottles helps give it that extra special touch. The corks are great at keeping pressure in and oxygen out. Since Grand Cru is a beer many people like to age, that’s a big plus.
