Omicron Persei 8 by Space Time Mead and Cider Works – a Metheglin style mead for our Futurama Monday.

Futurama Monday

Back for our second week of Futurama Monday. Last week Futurama premiered on Hulu, and they continued with “Season 11” Episode 2 today – Children of a Lesser Bog.

As I said previously – we will be doing a Futurama themed article each week, and later in the day I will be doing a Futurama episode recap / review on YouTube. So be sure to check out both.

Last week for our blog article I covered Futurama and Philosophy and did a book review of it. You can find that here – Book Review: Futurama and Philosophy (Edited by Courtland Lewis). Then later in the day I hopped on YouTube and did a recap / review of the episode – “Season 11 – Episode 1: The Impossible Stream” which you can catch here: Futurama Episode Review – The Impossible Stream and Mead Review: Omicron Persei 8 (SpaceTime Meadery) – you can also go straight to the video here: Season 11 – Episode 1 Review: The Impossible Stream.

On the video I did a recap / review of the episode as well as drank the Omicron Persei 8 and discussed it a bit, giving it a small, light review. I will be doing the full review in this blog post. (Later today, I will do a video recap / review of today’s episode – Season 11 – Episode 2: Children of a Lesser Bog.) I will be most likely having Allusion Brewing Company’s Star Wars themed beer – “Stay on Target”. (I won’t always be having a Futurama themed beer while doing a review, but I will try when I can.)

Futurama Monday Articles

Omicron Persei 8

Lrrr and the other Omicronians hail from Omicron Persei 8. They are a Reptilian / Lizard / Somewhat bird-ish species. For fun, I asked Chat GPT if they know about Omicron Persei 8, and here is its response:

Yes, I’m familiar with Omicron Persei 8. However, it’s worth noting that Omicron Persei 8 is a fictional planet from the animated television show “Futurama.” The show, created by Matt Groening, follows the adventures of a delivery boy named Fry who is cryogenically frozen and wakes up 1,000 years in the future.

In “Futurama,” Omicron Persei 8 is portrayed as a distant and dangerous planet, home to the Omicronians, an aggressive and warlike alien species. The Omicronians are often depicted as an exaggerated parody of science fiction tropes, and their planet serves as a recurring location in the series.

As a real astronomical object, Omicron Persei is a star system in the Perseus constellation, located approximately 1,100 light-years away from Earth. There is no known planet called Omicron Persei 8 in reality.

Chat GPT 3.5

The two Omicronians we see the most on screen is Lrrr and Nd-Nd his wife. To say they have a ‘complicated marriage’ is probably putting things mildly. Possibly my favorite episode involving the Omicronians is “Spanish Fry”.

Mead Review: Omicron Persei 8

Omicron Persei 8 by Space Time Mead and Cider Works

Beer / Mead: Omicron Persei 8
Brewery: Space Time Mead & Cider Works
Style: Mead – Metheglin
ABV: 9.3%
IBU: N / A
Untappd Description: Omicron Persei 8 has a nice hop character with almost malt like taste created by the buckwheat honey and coffee (think stout). This semi sweet mead is made with local wildflower honey, buckwheat honey, hops grown by Avery Mountain Bines & Twine, and Moka Origins Coffee. Hops and buckwheat honey added in boil. A wonderful mead when you are devouring. Lightly Carbonated. Gluten Free. Featuring art by Alexya Rauso.

Since I covered this a bit in the YouTube video, I’ll dive more into it here in the blog mead review. I suggest watching the video to get an idea of how the mead looks and how I thought it tasted on initial try. (Futurama Episode Review – The Impossible Stream and Mead Review: Omicron Persei 8.)

Appearance is very pretty, its a lovely light honey colored mead. It is transparent but with that golden orange glow. It has very good carbonation with wonderful bubbles that dance their way up to the surface.

Aroma is a honey, coffee, sweet, wild flower, with light hop note medley. This has a lot more interesting stuff going on with it than I had imagined at first pour. Taking a good nose of the mead gives you lots of different notes. The honey and hops might be muted due to the other notes of wildflower, sweetness, and coffee – or it also might be muted a bit due to age. This makes for an interesting (and nice) concoction of aromas.

Sipping on this – and its certainly a sipper, since its both a Mead, and a 9.3% ABV drink, you get the full gambit of tastes and things to notice. First taste, first impression, I get the sweet, the honey, the wildflower, with just a wee hint of coffee. Not much, and honestly without knowing the nose and reading the description, I’m not sure if I would believe its fully there. This could be an age thing, or it could be the mead itself. The hop characteristics have certainly tailed off, and I would place that a hundred percent on the age of the mead and not a thing to take umbrage with the mead itself. As you sip this you get a bit more of the medley of notes you first pick up in the nose and aroma. I get more coffee, I get more grounds and earthy notes (possibly the hops), and a lot more of the sweet, wildflower, and some of the hops fully and outright. The honey seems to sneak back in as the mead finishes up hitting you with a very sweet dosage of its potency. This was a wonderful addition to my “nerd panel” of beers and meads, to go along with all of the Star Wars RAR beers, the other Futurama themed beers I’ve had, and the numerous other Star Wars beers as well.

My Untappd Rating: ****
Global Untappd Rating: (Not Enough Reviews For a Global Rating) (as of 7.31.23)

Children of a Lesser Bog

Quick note on today’s episode – I will do a full review and recap on YouTube later, but since I have seen the episode already, I’ll jump in here and give a little bit of thoughts on it before expressing myself fully later.

I enjoyed the episode. I thought the start and the lead up to getting to the Amy / Kiff part was a bit weak (the honey stuff), and I thought some of Zapp’s lines felt forced, but generally I enjoyed the episode. I liked Kiff’s portrayal and segments, and I think it gave Amy some good character growth as well. Leela I thought was dumbed down a bit though, and not really sure my thoughts on how I feel they portrayed her in this episode.

I did enjoy the “bear biologist” and his return (he was the “whale biologist” from the original Fox run). The tardigrades was a fun inclusion, and I did like Axel, Mandy, and Lil Newt. I kinda wanted to expect more out of the idea of thousands and thousands of baby tadpoles and that there’d be more to it than just Kiff and Amy having three kids at various age stages, but I think this can work for future references and bits and segments. I was fully expecting them to do something different though.

Overall, I enjoyed the episode, and am looking forward to next week’s episode about “How the West Was 10101010101” and then the episode after that – “Parasites Regained”.

Futurama is Back Baby

As we covered in the previous two articles: Good News Everyone, Futurama is Back: Exploring Futurama – Inspired Craft Beers and Book Review: Futurama and Philosophy (Edited by Courtland Lewis) – Futurama is back, starting today with the first episode airing on Hulu streaming (July 24th, 2023).

Video Review

I did a YouTube (video) review of the first Futurama episode – Season 11 Episode 1 – The Impossible Stream. You can find that video here:

Futurama Episode Review – Season 11 Episode 1 – The Impossible Stream (as well as a Mead Review of Omicron Persei 8 by SpaceTime Meadery)

Please head over to YouTube by clicking the above video and checking out our YouTube page. Also please subscribe to be able to get more future YouTube content from us. We will be posting a weekly review of each episode of Futurama every Monday when they release. As well as there will be plenty more content.

And of course – make sure you “smash” that like button, subscribe button, and hit the notification button. Otherwise Nixon will sneak into your house at night and wreck up the place.

Futurama

We will be covering a weekly blog article each and every Monday for all 10 episodes of the Season 11 run on Hulu. I will also be following that up with a weekly video on YouTube giving my thoughts, opinions, and other commentaries about each episode. I will also likely be doing these reviews while having a beer and giving a quick review of the beer as well.

The first Futurama weekly blog article is a Book Review of Futurama and Philosophy, edited by Courtland Lewis.

Mead Review: Omicron Persei 8 by SpaceTime Meadery

Before we completely jump into this mead review, let’s first take a look at Omicron Persei 8.

Omicron Persei 8

From “The Infosphere” (Futurama’s version of Wikipedia or akin to Star Wars’ version of Wookiepedia), we get the following information on Omicron Persei 8:

Omicron Persei 8 is a planet situated about 1000 lightyears from Earth, in orbit around the star of Omicron Persei. The rulers of the planet are Lrrr and his wife Ndnd. Its surface seems to consist mainly of deserts. It is the home world and capital of the warlike Omicronians, the single greatest threat Earth and the entire Democratic Order of Planets are facing. It seems to have a small, asteroid-like satellite. [1ACV12] In addition to this, there are hundreds of small moons in the planet’s low orbit. [7ACV16]

In 3017, Fry travelled to Omicron Persei 8 to retrieve an artifact that would help clear the universe of hypnowaves. Lrrr, upset because he was using the artifact to steal cable channels from Earth, invaded New New York, and wouldn’t leave until President Nixon turned Fry over to him. The Omicronians were surprised that the Earthicans put up such a fight, and decided to call off their attack. However, Lrrr and Ndnd remained on Earth, along with a replica of the Omicronian Palace and several other Omicronian buildings.

……..

The Omicron Persei system contains at least 27 planets, as Omicron Persei 27 has been mentioned and the number indicates which planet in the system is being referred to, with the highest numbers being furthest from their stars. Omicron Persei 8 is neighbored by the planets Omicron Persei 7 and Omicron Persei 9 as have been referenced by Ndnd. This is a reference and a gag on the common Earth expression, and book by John Gray, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, the planets that “surround” Earth on either side of its orbit. It is merely meant to hyperbolically portray the large gap in cultural understanding between the sexes.

In “T.: The Terrestrial“, it is shown that the planet has hundreds of small moons in its low orbit. Its “third moon” is mentioned by Lrrr in “Spanish Fry“.

Not going to go too crazy in depth on this due to discussing it in the video, but this was a really lovely mead. There is a nice hop character to it, but its also a lovely dry and crispy mead. There’s a non – cloying sweetness to it deriving from the honey and wildflower that adds a very nice character to it.

We had stopped in Scranton area and stumbled upon the meadery and loved its SciFi, science, NASA, themes, and being a huge Futurama nerd I had to grab a can of this to go.

(And I am so glad I did.)

The Impossible Stream

In this video:

Futurama Episode Review – Season 11 Episode 1 – The Impossible Stream (as well as a Mead Review of Omicron Persei 8 by SpaceTime Meadery)

I give my full thoughts on Season 11’s Episode 1 – The Impossible Stream. So I will give it a proper rating here on the blog, and let you watch / listen to the video for my full thoughts.

On a score of 1 to 10 (1 being the worst, 10 being the best) I gave The Impossible Stream a 6 going to 6.5; and with benefit of the doubt I’ll stick to 6.5.

So for each future episode, I’ll keep a running tally of the season. So far:

Season 11 Episode Ratings

  • Season 11: Episode 1: The Impossible Stream – 6.5 out of 10
  • Season 11: Episode 2: Children of a Lesser Bog – (will air next week – July 31st, 2023)

I will keep this list updated and will show the next upcoming episode after. There is 10 episodes for each of the two seasons currently greenlit for Hulu. Season 11 and Season 12 are both scheduled to have 10 episodes, and all of the episode names have been announced.

Futurama – Season 11 Episode 1: The Impossible Stream

So make sure you come back each week for my video recap and reviews of each episode, as well as the accompanying blog articles.

May the Fourth Be With You (2023) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2023/05/04/may-the-fourth-be-with-you-2023/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=may-the-fourth-be-with-you-2023 Thu, 04 May 2023 13:30:00 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=11261 May the Fourth Be With You

Yes, its that time again! Fourth year running of us mentioning it. (We started the blog in late May of 2019, so we’ve only gotten to tackle May the Fourth in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 now.)

Its that day again. A nerd day of celebratory and galactic proportions. A day to jump on Nintendo Switch Online, on LEGO.com, on Star Wars.com and who knows how many other fan sites and branding sites to get tons of Star Wars related deals.

By now I’m sure you’ve seen it all over Facebook already, every brewery from near and far posting a picture of their workers in costume or a Star Wars movie still with a beer on the picture, usually with the branding of “May the Fourth Be With You” somewhere on the image.

I bet you are probably even within about a 20 mile radius of a brewery or bar doing “Star Wars trivia” tonight.

Its also a day here to celebrate Star Wars in general, and on The Beer Thrillers we are definitely doing that! We definitely love covering Star Wars here on The Beer Thrillers, and I think it shows with our sheer number of Star Wars themed beer reviews, Book of Boba Fett review, and even Star Wars book reviews. On our Facebook page you can find us often linking and sharing to various new beer releases by different (somewhat nearby for me) breweries that are Star Wars themed.

So with the idea of the fact that nearly every brewery is doing some kind of Star Wars themed day or releasing a Star Wars themed beer, I’m going to present a small list of near – ish to me places doing Star Wars beer released themed for this year’s May the Fourth Be With You. (I’m not going to run down a list of every place doing just Star Wars trivia, but the breweries that are at least doing a Star Wars themed beer release, or have a Star Wars themed beer on their menu. And of course, if I miss any, be sure to mention it in the comments section.)

May the Fourth Beer Releases

Star Wars meme our friend Josh at Master Mind X Studios made up for us.

Yes, its that time of year when brewers take their beers they’ve made, and decide to give it a Star Wars themed pun and shoot it out on May 4th or nearby arounds to great critical acclaim (and for people like me, who love Star Wars, to grab up and drink up).

(This is also when the mulers come out in droves, charging you 80$ for two four packs that are being sold for 22$, and willing to ship. I have stretches of DMs from yesterday of Floridians telling me “its totally the acceptable price to sell 40$ for a 4 pack”, and even though S&H doesn’t go up if you ship 4 or if you ship 8, still charging 40$ per pack, so 80$ for 8 beers.

Yea, actually, don’t get me started about the insane DMs I got from mulers and re-flippers specifically from the Miami area, trying to get me J. Wakefield Beers of their Star Wars release. I even had one guy DM and tell me that 105$ for a mixed four pack [two of one beer, two of the other], is a very generous offer.)

(Various Facebook posts about Star Wars themed beer releases.)

Star Wars Day Beer Releases

In probably my favorite mash up; Second Sin Brewing Company (Bristol, PA) is releasing Obi Wan Jabroni. A mash up of The Rock and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Crooked Crab Brewing Company – Crabdalorian

Always enjoy the pun twists like this one – Crooked Crab is releasing the “Crabdalorian” today in celebration of Star Wars Day / May the Fourth Be With you. (Similarly, Tattered Flag in the past released “The Pandalorian“.)

Brewery Fire – Hoth: Mangalorian

We’ve covered Brewery Fire’s “The Mangalorian” before, but this is a new take on it. A Cold IPA version of it, appropriately titled: Hoth: The Mangalorian.

Allusion Brewing Company – Stay on Target

Our Battle of the Breweries 2023 championAllusion Brewing Company – still has their “Stay on Target” on draft.

Divine Barrel – I Did It For the Wookie

Divine Barrel has a re-release of their “I Did it For the Wookie” beer.

Bottle Logic – Three Releases

Bottle Logic Brewing Company is releasing three beers for today, but as of time of writing, they have only announced two. “Tatooine Sunset” and “Unlimited Power”.

J. Wakefield Beer

The last I’m gonna highlight here is J. Wakefield Beer’s two releases for today. Dagobah Downpour and Max Rebo’s Sour Ale. Who doesn’t love Max Rebo? Honestly. Coolest musician ever. Other than maybe Droopy McCool who was a Jizz Whailer. (And yes… thats a real term in Star Wars before you get mad at me!)

Help A Brother Out

Here’s gonna be my call out. Help a Brother Out! If you ever see a Star Wars themed, Futurama themed, Zelda themed, Lord of the Rings themed, Seinfeld themed, Simpsons themed, pretty much anything nerdy pop culture themed, beer, shoot me a message. Maybe we can work out a deal or sale or trade or something.

Always looking to get my hands on Star Wars and other nerd themed beers to review for the site / blog. So if you know of any – let me know! I wanna check them all out!

(An incomplete list of beers I’m looking for on BeerAdvocate – ISO – Star Wars Themed Beers.)

A Highlight of Our Star Wars Beer Reviews

May the Fourth be full of memes

(Some of the following comes from my “May the Fourth Be With You” 2022 article and 2020 articles.)

In this article, I broke down what Star Wars Day is (May the Fourth) and discussed what Star Wars articles I had written up to that point. (Don’t worry, there have been PLENTY of new Star Wars content since then.)

Beer Review: This is the Way (Broken Goblet)

This is the Way by Broken Goblet

One of the first Star Wars themed beers I reviewed here on the blog, and one of our most popular beer review articles. A good friend (Roy Ge) picked it up for me and Drew to drink at his place while we did a podcast about The Mandalorian. Was an absolutely wonderful beer. They have released a few variants since. One of which I am covering in the upcoming weeks with the Obi-Wan Kenobi show.

Beer Review: This is Nut The Fluff You Are Looking For (Fourscore Beer Co)

This is Nut the Fluff You Are Looking for by Fourscore Beer Co.

Picked this big bad boy of a bottle up when I was in Gettysburg with Ming and Don and brought it back to drink with Drew. As you can see on the blog, you’ll be able to find several Fourscore Beer Co reviews (you can even find Amy’s latest beer review right here – Phantomania). They are a phenomenal brewery that loves delving into Star Wars themed beers. We just picked up a four pack of soft swerves from them that were Star Wars themed, and can’t wait to dive into them here for the blog.

Beer Review: Out of Order – Blue Milk (RAR Brewing)

Out of Order: Blue Milk by RAR Brewing

One of our most popular articles on the blog (right up there with our yearly March Madness tournament posts, our review of Yuengling’s Hershey Porter, and with the Broken Skulls IPA by Stone Cold). This was the first of the Out of Order series I’ve reviewed, and it was a solo one they originally did, but then brought back when they did their Star Wars release in 2021. You’ll find others from that series down below.

Beer Review: Wookie Monster (Fourscore Beer Co)

Wookie Monster by Fourscore Beer Co

Another excellent beer, and another Star Wars themed beer by Fourscore Beer Co. Had to work to get this one because I missed out on their initial release and it sold out quickly. Got it through a trade chain through the Central PA Whalerz group, and was I ever so grateful. Delicious beer.

Beer Review: The Pandalorian (Tattered Flag)

The Pandalorian by Tattered Flag

From our good friends at Tattered Flag comes this mash-up parody beer called The Pandalorian. This is a very juicy, tasty New Engand IPA that hit the spot on a warm sunny day in November. Soon after my trip back from Indianapolis, (as you can tell by the Vonnegut glass), I got lucky and still had some nice warm November days, and I took full advantage of it laying out and drinking in the sun while reading.

Beer Review: Java the Stout (Jackie O’s Brewery)

Java the Stout can art by Jackie O’s Brewery

One of the beers I picked up on my trip to and from Indianapolis was Java the Stout by Jackie O’s. It was a delicious stout that “lived up to its name”. Also, the can art is absolutely phenomenal. Its worth checking out just for that.

Beer Review: This is the Whey (Bolero Snort)

This is the Whey by Bolero Snort

One of the first Star Wars themed beers I’ve reviewed by Bolero Snort, and a fantastic beer. The other was BoBull Fett and I reviewed that for the premier episode of ‘Book of Boba Fett‘.

Beer Review: The Mangalorian (Brewery Fire)

The Mangolorian by Brewery Fire

In early January I hiked with Ming in the Catoctin Mountain area of Maryland. Afterwards we stopped at Brewery Fire and I picked this up to go. This was my May the Fourth review last year. Wonderful beer, and a great brewery that loves their nerd and pop culture references.

Beer Review: BoBull Fett (Bolero Snort)

BoBull Fett by Bolero Snort

Another beer review from Bolero Snort, and this time a crowler. We traveled out to New Jersey to pick this up the day of the premier for Book of Boba Fett and then reviewed it for the show as our first of the weekly beer reviews for our “Star Wars Wednesdays”. A fantastic beer.

Beer Review: Out of Order – Tatooine Tart (RAR Brewing)

Tatooine Tart by RAR Brewing

Back to RAR Brewing and their Out of Order series. Part of their Star Wars batch of the Out of Order series (along with Blue Milk making its return). Jabba’s Palace scene on the background on the computer from Return of the Jedi. As you can also see with the BoBull Fett beer review, the beginning of all the Star Wars LEGOs being shown in the beer pics.

Beer Review: Out of Order – RAWRGWAWGGR (RAR Brewing)

Out of Order – RARWWARRGGRGR by RAR Brewing

On a cold wintery snowy day in January (January 19th), and another Star Wars Wednesday, I took this Hoth like scene pic with another great Out of Order series beer from RAR Brewing.

Mead Review: The Meadalorian (Space Time Meadery and Cidery)

The Meadalorian by Space Time Meadery and Cidery

Our first Mead review on the blog, and it was a fantastic mead. Check out Space Time Meadery and Cidery if you are in the Scranton PA area. You won’t be disappointed.

Beer Review: Let the Haze Flow Through You (Black Flag Brewing Co.)

Let the Haze Flow Through You by Black Flag Brewing Co.

One of several Black Flag beers we’ve covered on the blog. A top notch brewery we love to hit up whenever we’re able to in the Maryland area. (Its about an hour and a half – plus – drive from our location near Harrisburg.) It has quickly become one of Amy’s favorite breweries. In the background you an also see Troeg’s Double Nugget Nectar which we have reviewed as well.

Beer Review: Wookies and Cream (Tall Tales Brewing Co.)

Wookies and Cream by Tall Tales Brewing Co.

On another of our brewery trips (this time making our way from Burley Oak over to Cushwa for their 5th Anniversary Brewfest) we stopped at Tall Tales Brewing Co, where I couldn’t help trying out a Star Wars themed beer… especially a stout!

Beer Review: Out of Order – Droid Juice (RAR Brewing)

Out of Order – Droid Juice by RAR Brewing

Back to RAR Brewing’s Out of Order series for our next Star Wars beer review, another of our weekly Book of Boba Fett “Star Wars Wednesdays” beer reviews. A wonderful sour from RAR in line with their others from the series (and their Out of Order series as a whole).

Thank You For Reading

Seeing all the different brewery releases everywhere on a day like this always gives me big time FOMO feelings. Like I’m missing out on a ton of beer. I have reigned that in a lot in my older years, I no longer due to line waiting, and I tamper down mule buying too much (doing more per cost, not willing to give mules a ton of extra money, etc.). Because deep down we all know – beer is beer. As long as you enjoy the beer, it could be called “Zapp Branigan’s Fart” or it could be called “The Death Star IPA” or “IPA”, and it would all taste the same. I think its good to keep that all in perspective when getting that “FOMO” feeling.

Thank you everyone for checking this out.

Also, make sure you stay up to date on the latest of the Founders Brewing Company’s current ‘saga’:

Today (obviously) is May 4th. “May the 4th Be With You.” Anyone planning on doing any fun silly Star Wars stuff? Any breweries you are hitting up for some fun beer releases?

Lots of places are turning their normal Thursday night trivia into “Star Wars Trivia” nights.

So what all are you getting into?

Then, Friday is Cinco de Mayo (May 5th). And THEN – its the Craft Brewers Conference May 7th – May 10th. What a busy grouping of days!

Thank you for reading everyone. We are gearing up for the Craft Brewers Conference (CBC) this upcoming week. We are traveling down Saturday and Sunday, and going to be at the conference late Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

We are totally psyched and cannot wait.

Will you be there? What do you hope to see, learn, do? Anything cool we should check out? Let us know in the comments!

Thanks again for reading everyone. Take some time to check out the site, we greatly appreciate it. We have affiliates and sponsors with Pretzels.com and Beer Drop.com, which can save you money on their products if you are interested. Check out our articles on them. Make sure to check out our beer reviews, brewery reviews, Amy’s weekly column, book reviews, hike reviews, and so much more.

Cheers All!

The Meadalorian by Space Time Mead and Cider Works

Mead

Hang in there with me on this one, for this is my first mead review here on the blog. I was originally just gonna keep it the same “Beer Review: The Meadalorian” but thought about it some, and decided with it being mead, that it needed its own category and section, so thus – Mead Review rather than Beer Review for the title of the article. So this is my first mead review here on the blog (as a direct full review).

I picked up the mead when we visited Scranton and stopped at the meadery completely by happenstance. You can read about our trip to Scranton. “Travelogue: Scrambling around Scranton.” The Space Time meadery was a cool little hang out, we tasted and sampled several of the meads, and the store inside was decked out very cool (especially if your a space nerd). Fully recommend stopping in if you are in the Scranton area.

As I’ve said, this is my first time reviewing mead fully on here, I will do it similar to that of beer reviews, but just let it be forewarned that while I enjoy mead, I am not nearly as much of a connoisseur of mead or as knowledgeable about mead as I am about beer. (If I can really be said to be knowledgeable about beer either.) So just take this for what it is then.

Star Wars

This is week three of my doing Star Wars themed beer reviews (every Wednesday until the completion of ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ I will be doing a Star Wars themed beer – or in this case mead – review). Previously I’ve covered:

I have done plenty of other Star Wars themed beers as well, and they’ll be linked at the end of this article.

Just like last week, you can join in on the discussion forums about The Book of Boba Fett, by going to these forums:

Despite what the timer says on my stove in the beer picture (…yes…. I haven’t set the timer on it yet…. my microwave hasn’t been set either, that just blinks 00:00 at me; the stove is just completely way off), I uncorked this mead at 9PM and started drinking it then. I had gotten off work at 6PM, had dinner with my parents, and came home to have this so I could write up the review and be all ready to go with it before having to go to work on Wednesday – the next day.

Firstly, let me say I don’t have a wine pen or wine opener, or de-corker, or whatever fancy term they use. I am about as far from a wine enthusiast or expert as they come. So I used a screwdriver, and in the process, ended up making a mess of wood, and dropping the cork down in. ….as Vonnegut would say – So It Goes.

While enjoying my adult beverage, my friend over at The Knights of NostalgiaDrew – streamed the second part of his Majora’s Mask randomizer, and I watched / listened as I played a game of SW:CCG on GEMP.

I’ve recently gotten back into SW:CCG and started looking up the cards on GEMP and playing games on there (three games so far, 1-2 so far). GEMP is an online format to play the old SW:CCG game (Star Wars Customizable Card Game). You can find the site and program here: GEMP-SWCCG. The PC (Players Committee) oversees it, and runs the program and website, and also offers several tournaments through it (especially now with COVID-19 and the pandemic, which has caused a lot less gaming in person, and has driven many more players to the online tournaments). I built an AOBS deck for DS (Agents of the Black Sun) and a Communing deck based around Qui-Gon for LS.

So I got a game in last night while sipping this delicious mead (I lost, by 15 Force Differential. I played against a Shadow Collective deck, which was based primarily on the Crimson Dawn from the Solo movie). I haven’t played the game in roughly 7 – to – 8 years, so there was a lot of reading cards in this game, and despite not knowing what 98% of them did, I think I somewhat held my own.

But enough about my blabbering about nerd crap, let’s get to the review.

Mead Review

Mead: The Meadalorian
Brewery: Space Time Mead and Cider Works
Style: Mead – Traditional
ABV: 12.1%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: This is the way! A medium dry/semi sweet traditional mead using Locust blossom honey. A nice replacement for a semi dry white grape wine!

Space Time Mead and Cider Works is located in Dunmore; basically the suburbs of Scranton. They have 62 unique beers (or meads) and have a total of 707 ratings. They are considered a Meadery. They have a global average rating of 3.93 as of 1.11.22. Their Untappd description reads: “Space Time Mead & Cider Works’ mission is to produce the highest quality and innovative craft mead (honey wine), cider, and wine in a manner that respects the past and works for a better future, while living in the present.”

Aroma for this is a wonderful grape like, dry wine smell. Its got a dry wine smell that really hits, but at closer whiff, it gives off a lovely sweet smelling of honey. I picture it like a good Thanksgiving wine, one that is dueling with its dryness and sweetness at the same time.

Appearance is crystal clear with a light off clear / yellow hue to it. Like a dry grape wine coloring. Or similar to champagne. Which it also has some of the sparkling and bubbles of champagne, especially after pouring or moving the glass around. It looks honeyed. Its clear and translucent (with the hue that it has), a slight haze cloudiness to it (almost oil like way of looking through it like clear dry wine has when looking through glasses of white wine). It swishes around in the glass nicely.

Oooooh boy, for someone who isn’t a traditional mead drinker, or wine drinker, this has got some kick to it. I mean, I enjoy a high ABV beer (in fact, I actually LOVE the higher ABV beers, particularly stouts), but this kicks and hits in a different way. Not bad! Just not the way this ol’ country bumpkin beer drinker is used to (thats all)! I am totally digging it though (like a Tusken Raider prisoner digging for some black fruits for their milk in a hot Tatooine desert). This is dry…. dry like…. Tatooine? (Oh… what a theme I’m building here! I’m a regular Billy Shakespeare.) It has a white grape, dry, wine line taste, but mixed with a honeyed sweetness. Like the two are married together… stuck in a perpetual orbit…. like two Twin Suns over a hot planet….. BOOOM! NAILED IT AGAIN! (Am I killing it with these analogies or what?!). This is certainly refreshing to my palate of beers, and I am really enjoying it. It does certainly taste boozy (and it should at 12.1%) but I also feel like most / if not all meads typically taste boozy (even the lower ABV ones). This is a warming drink, as in it just makes you warm up drinking it, and flushes them cheeks right up. And as the mead itself warms up and settles in the glass, I think it tastes even better. There is a slight crispness to it, but the sweetness really overrides the dryness and crispness and finishes it out. There’s no bad aftertaste, and no cotton mouth like I’ve had with some dry wines in the past. The mouth feel felt just right, nothing cloying, nothing too heavy or watery. Everything about this was just good, from the first sip to the last and just felt good. Was a wonderful drink from the top of the glass to the bottom and I certainly enjoyed every single second of it (even while losing my game, and listening to Drew getting stuck and frustrated on his Majora’s Mask randomizer). This was great. If you have the chance are in the Scranton / Dunmore area, make sure you stop in at Space Time Mead and Cider works. The owner is a wonderful dude and knows his stuff, and is a huge space nerd (so right there is a win in my books). I have a Futurama mead from them yet to review as well, which I will probably be doing in the days to come.

My Untappd Rating: ****.25
Global Average Untappd Rating: 4.23 (as of 1.12.22)

Star Wars and Legos

As you may have noticed, I am getting more and more into Star Wars Legos and using them more and more in the pictures for these Star Wars beers. Legos are the newer, more hipster, more fun version of the old school models our dads built and made. Or their better puzzles. Or… their just plain freaking cool and fun. Take your pick. But needless to say, I am addicted to buying more and more Lego sets and building more and more of them. To see some of the sets, and to see some of my Star Wars pics, and just our travels and beer pics in general, make sure to follow us on Instagram:

The Book of Boba Fett

I am going to refrain from discussing this week’s episode too much here. But I will say, there is a few interesting things, and I won’t really spoil them. Overall, I wasn’t a huge fan of this week’s episode. But I do like that they progressed the present timeline storyline much more than they have in the past. Some interesting cameos and surprise actors, some homages, and the typical Star Wars cliches abound. Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments. Will be interested in what you all think of this week’s episode.
