Another Futurama Monday

Welcome back for another Futurama Monday! Did you know Hulu has the episodes up basically at midnight?! I didn’t! I thought it was like Disney+ and other services where a new episode usually airs at 3:00 AM EST, but I got on last night and the newest episode was on already at 12:54 AM (EST) when I checked it out. Totally awesome and good to know I can get an early jump on each Futurama episode (since I only get to bed usually around 1 AM – 2 AM every night anyway).

Today’s Futurama themed beer is an older beer – but I did the review quite a while ago, and saved it. I had been waiting and deciding when to post the review – and then found out that the series was coming back and I thought – perfect, I’ll just wait to post it when the new season comes up. So here it is, now to be posted with the new season.

I Apologize For Nothing (pictured with Hedonism Bot on the label) came out for the Fourscore Beer Company’s 3rd Anniversary Celebration last year. (And coincidentally, they are ramping up their celebrations for this upcoming week which will be their fourth anniversary celebration. Check their Facebook page for all of their announcements. Fourscore Beer Company did a big 3rd Anniversary Celebration last year with a lot of new releases and I Apologize For Nothing was one of them.

I Apologize For Nothing

I Apologize for Nothing!

A memorable quote from one of the more tertiary characters of the show – Hedonism Bot. He is only in 14 episodes and 3 of the movies, and rarely has more than one or two lines – one of which is the above line (repeated a few times over the various episodes).

In 3003, Hedonismbot attended the Big Robot Party (4ACV08). In 3004, he attended the Calculon–Coilette wedding (4ACV13), and asked Fry to write an opera (4ACV18). In 3007, he saw the professor‘s doomsday devices (BBS). In 3008, he was present at the League of Robots when Bender entered the league (TBWABB). In 3009, he attended the Violet Dwarf Star Implosion (ITWGY). In 3010, he supported Proposition ∞ (6ACV04), he made a big party to celebrate his wedding to a house (6ACV07), saw Amy and Kif at the Hip Joint (6ACV08), and attended the 100th Delivery Party (6ACV12). In 3014, he was with the Planet Express Crew and the Simpsons during “the end of the world” (SABF16).

Hedonismbot’s behaviour resembles that of a rich decadent Roman noble of ancient times, and he is a great patron of the opera with his very own box in the Metropolitan House of Opera – he even commissioned Fry to write an opera in which Fry would perform the Holophonor (4ACV18).

Hedonismbot also enjoys a number of unconventional hedonistic pleasures, including being covered in chocolate icing, sex orgies and robosexuality.

Hedonismbot was to be married to a house in the suburbs in July of 3010, but the night before, he held a bachelor party where, due to a nuclear powered stripper malfunctioning, he was the only survivor. It is unclear if he was married or not, but as evidenced by a party in September, his hedonistic ways of promiscuity have not changed.

In a season three commentary, Matt Groening points out the importance of the name being Hedonismbot and not Hedonistbot – he is not only hedonist, he is the actual personification of hedonism.

In 3013, Leela called him a senator (7ACV21).

As his name suggests – he is a robot based around hedonism. Kind of a Caligula styled design and character attitude, all about wanton and based lusts.

Beer Review: I Apologize For Nothing

Beer: I Apologize For Nothing
Brewery: Fourscore Beer Co.
Style: IPA – Triple New England / Hazy
ABV: 10%
IBU: N / A
Untappd Description: Built off a base of American 2 Row and Chit malts with loads of malted and flaked oats and a very large dose of powdered Australian Sauvignon Blanc whole grape powder. Hopped in the kettle with Calypso and Centennial Cryo and triple dry hopped with Kohatu, Citra Cryo and Emerald Spire. The grape powder provides a melon forward aromatic profile that is followed by notes of under ripe pineapple and pine needles. The grape follows through in the flavor on top of a soft and juicy base. More floral notes are present here along with watermelon rind, candied pineapple and bright citrus

Bammo! Hedonism all over on this big bad TIPA (Triple IPA). It hits you right out of the gate as you start to pour it with a heady aroma of hops knocking those hedonistic senses right out of you. The Citra really shines on the nose and aroma, and you get a wealth of fruity flavors ranging from grape, pineapple, and a bit of mango and grapefruit to kind of round it out. This is a bright, juicy, powerful beer, just from the aroma alone.

The appearance is a beautiful light straw color, with a wonderful fluffy, cloud like head to it. Very soft, very pillowy, airy and light looking. (Don’t let that fool you though.) It is opaque and hazy like a New England hazy IPA should be, no real noticeable floating sediment, and as you drink it, it left wonderful lacing on the glass.

Already I know this is going to be a killer beer. As good as an explosion at Hedonism Bot’s bachelor party. (“There was bodies everywhere…. and then the explosion happened!”) Big time carbonation and continued fermentation here; big fruit flavors and the grape powder adds a nice tartness. There is a lot of flavors and interactions going on with this big bad boy of a TIPA. The tartness is paired with sweeter, gummies citrus notes Sweet, but TIPAs need that to counter the booze. The sweetness does counter balance the tartness nicely, and the hops, even New England / Hazy TIPAs can get a bit too much hop character, too much hop bite, and can be too green – they just need that fruit, that sweet, that wealth of flavors and aromas to counterbalance – otherwise it can be a bit too much, especially the higher ABV they get, the more boozy they can sometimes taste and feel. This is a very intricate and balanced beer with a lot of nuanced tastes and notes to be discovered as you drink it. Its not a sipper like a bourbon barrel aged barleywine or anything, but certainly not one you can crush or should be drinking too fast. Definitely don’t think its a four – pack in an evening type of beer either (more like one or two at most).

How the West Was 1010101010

(I don’t even know if I have the right binary above, but lets go with it.) Quick thoughts on today’s episode – I enjoyed it. So far might be my favorite episode of the season. Dwight does sound off, not sure if they recast him, or if its a thing of aging, but he sounds off. I did enjoy Roberto, Borax Kid, and all of the little character arcs of the episode. It was just a fun, old school, zany Futurama episode. Not all of the jokes fully landed, but they were still on brand for the most part, and were fun. They didn’t have to do much exposition in the episode, and I just enjoyed it. Was just a fun, Futurama episode of old.

Preparing for the Holiday Weekend

While mentally preparing for this long holiday weekend I stared at the collection of bomber bottles on top of my rolltop desk in my living room.  It feels like they are taking up lots of space and I just simply must decrease the number of bottles on top of my desk.  Holiday weekends are perfect for that.

I decided to crack into the Captain Precious from Alementary.  We picked up this one when we had to stop by since after having Scarlet.  We loved celebrating her birth by toasting one of our favs from them, Figgy Pudding. 

When we posted on IG about her birth they graciously offered another bottle in celebration.  Captain Precious was another bottle we had to get on the way out the door. 

Captain Precious is a 12.5% Barleywine and the perfect way to kick off the holiday weekend and we paired it with some spicy tacos.  It has an average rating on Untapped at 3.90 and that is way too low for this quality Barleywine.  It is described on Untapped as “Marjie’s first beer!  This Barleywine is made with peanut butter and heaps of fresh blueberries and fermented with Kveik yeast for a touch of overripe tropical fruit. “The perfect mix of some peanut butter and blueberries it was delicious. We then finished off the night with a stout we bought way before we got pregnant, two of the Pastry Stouts from the Pastry Parkway line from Fourscore Beer Co in Gettysburg. All four pastry stouts come in with a 15% ABV. Two of the four we got were the cannoli and the s’mores Cupcake.  The other two I wish I got my hands on were Blueberry Marshmallow Muffin and Chocolate Cherry Caramel Croissant.  The Pastry Parkway was a collab with Wolf Brewering Company in Mechanicsburg, PA and Fourscore Beer Company in Gettysburg, PA.

We started with the Cannoli Pastry Stout and we decided to pair it with some chocolate peanut butter cup Turkey Hill ice cream.  It was a warm evening and I would be going for ice cream so we were lucky it was a delicious combo.  Then, as I sat down to write this, we cracked open the S’more Cupcake Pastry Stout and stole Ben’s Zebra cakes to go with it. 

I know feel accomplished getting a few things cleaned up around the house by decreasing the bomber stash.  I can’t wait for the next holiday weekend!  Happy Birthday America!

Some Explosive Good Beers

All of these – from the Figgy Pudding we had in honor of our child’s birth; to the Captain Precocious we had picked up at The Alementary (one of our favorite breweries), to the two Fourscore Beer Co and Wolf Brewing Company collabs (Pastry Parkway – Cannoli and Pastry Parkway – S’mores Cupcake) were “explosively good”. (See what I did there?)

So I have to ask you all again… how many bombers do you have sitting at home, cellaring in your basement, and waiting to be drank? (Don’t worry, despite polishing these off, we still have plenty more to go!)

Its that day again. A nerd day of celebratory and galactic proportions. A day to jump on Nintendo Switch Online, on LEGO.com, on Star Wars.com and who knows how many other fan sites and branding sites to get tons of Star Wars related deals.

By now I’m sure you’ve seen it all over Facebook already, every brewery from near and far posting a picture of their workers in costume or a Star Wars movie still with a beer on the picture, usually with the branding of “May the Fourth Be With You” somewhere on the image.

I bet you are probably even within about a 20 mile radius of a brewery or bar doing “Star Wars trivia” tonight.

Its also a day here to celebrate Star Wars in general, and on The Beer Thrillers we are definitely doing that! We definitely love covering Star Wars here on The Beer Thrillers, and I think it shows with our sheer number of Star Wars themed beer reviews, Book of Boba Fett review, and even Star Wars book reviews. On our Facebook page you can find us often linking and sharing to various new beer releases by different (somewhat nearby for me) breweries that are Star Wars themed.

So with the idea of the fact that nearly every brewery is doing some kind of Star Wars themed day or releasing a Star Wars themed beer, I’m going to present a small list of near – ish to me places doing Star Wars beer released themed for this year’s May the Fourth Be With You. (I’m not going to run down a list of every place doing just Star Wars trivia, but the breweries that are at least doing a Star Wars themed beer release, or have a Star Wars themed beer on their menu. And of course, if I miss any, be sure to mention it in the comments section.)

May the Fourth Beer Releases

Yes, its that time of year when brewers take their beers they’ve made, and decide to give it a Star Wars themed pun and shoot it out on May 4th or nearby arounds to great critical acclaim (and for people like me, who love Star Wars, to grab up and drink up).

(This is also when the mulers come out in droves, charging you 80$ for two four packs that are being sold for 22$, and willing to ship. I have stretches of DMs from yesterday of Floridians telling me “its totally the acceptable price to sell 40$ for a 4 pack”, and even though S&H doesn’t go up if you ship 4 or if you ship 8, still charging 40$ per pack, so 80$ for 8 beers.

Yea, actually, don’t get me started about the insane DMs I got from mulers and re-flippers specifically from the Miami area, trying to get me J. Wakefield Beers of their Star Wars release. I even had one guy DM and tell me that 105$ for a mixed four pack [two of one beer, two of the other], is a very generous offer.)

Star Wars Day Beer Releases

There is a lot of Star Wars day beer releases for today, the biggest notable one is typically RAR Brewery. Who does a Star Wars themed Out of Order beer release every year. This year they are releasing five Out of Order Star Wars themed beers.

RAR Brewing – Out of Order Star Wars

The RAR Brewing Company Out of Order series is one of their most notable series, and they typically do thematic four, five, six pack releases.

This year is a five – pack (not a typical four pack or six pack) that contains two old favorites as well as three new ones; also a new glass and a new ‘mood mat’.

The beers in this year’s drop are:

Brewery Fire – Hoth: Mangalorian

We’ve covered Brewery Fire’s “The Mangalorian” before, but this is a new take on it. A Cold IPA version of it, appropriately titled: Hoth: The Mangalorian.

Allusion Brewing Company – Stay on Target

Our Battle of the Breweries 2023 champion – Allusion Brewing Company – still has their “Stay on Target” on draft.

Divine Barrel – I Did It For the Wookie

Divine Barrel has a re-release of their “I Did it For the Wookie” beer.

Bottle Logic – Three Releases

Bottle Logic Brewing Company is releasing three beers for today, but as of time of writing, they have only announced two. “Tatooine Sunset” and “Unlimited Power”.

J. Wakefield Beer

The last I’m gonna highlight here is J. Wakefield Beer’s two releases for today. Dagobah Downpour and Max Rebo’s Sour Ale. Who doesn’t love Max Rebo? Honestly. Coolest musician ever. Other than maybe Droopy McCool who was a Jizz Whailer. (And yes… thats a real term in Star Wars before you get mad at me!)

Here’s gonna be my call out. Help a Brother Out! A Highlight of Our Star Wars Beer Reviews

(Some of the following comes from my “May the Fourth Be With You” 2022 article and 2020 articles.)

Beer Review: This is the Way (Broken Goblet)

One of the first Star Wars themed beers I reviewed here on the blog, and one of our most popular beer review articles. A good friend (Roy Ge) picked it up for me and Drew to drink at his place while we did a podcast about The Mandalorian. Was an absolutely wonderful beer. They have released a few variants since. One of which I am covering in the upcoming weeks with the Obi-Wan Kenobi show.

Beer Review: This is Nut The Fluff You Are Looking For (Fourscore Beer Co)

Picked this big bad boy of a bottle up when I was in Gettysburg with Ming and Don and brought it back to drink with Drew. As you can see on the blog, you’ll be able to find several Fourscore Beer Co reviews (you can even find Amy’s latest beer review right here – Phantomania). They are a phenomenal brewery that loves delving into Star Wars themed beers. We just picked up a four pack of soft swerves from them that were Star Wars themed, and can’t wait to dive into them here for the blog.

Beer Review: Out of Order – Blue Milk (RAR Brewing)

One of our most popular articles on the blog (right up there with our yearly March Madness tournament posts, our review of Yuengling’s Hershey Porter, and with the Broken Skulls IPA by Stone Cold). This was the first of the Out of Order series I’ve reviewed, and it was a solo one they originally did, but then brought back when they did their Star Wars release in 2021. You’ll find others from that series down below.

Beer Review: Wookie Monster (Fourscore Beer Co)

Another excellent beer, and another Star Wars themed beer by Fourscore Beer Co. Had to work to get this one because I missed out on their initial release and it sold out quickly. Got it through a trade chain through the Central PA Whalerz group, and was I ever so grateful. Delicious beer.

Beer Review: The Pandalorian (Tattered Flag)

From our good friends at Tattered Flag comes this mash-up parody beer called The Pandalorian. This is a very juicy, tasty New Engand IPA that hit the spot on a warm sunny day in November. Soon after my trip back from Indianapolis, (as you can tell by the Vonnegut glass), I got lucky and still had some nice warm November days, and I took full advantage of it laying out and drinking in the sun while reading.

Beer Review: Java the Stout (Jackie O’s Brewery)

One of the beers I picked up on my trip to and from Indianapolis was Java the Stout by Jackie O’s. It was a delicious stout that “lived up to its name”. Also, the can art is absolutely phenomenal. Its worth checking out just for that.

Beer Review: This is the Whey (Bolero Snort)

One of the first Star Wars themed beers I’ve reviewed by Bolero Snort, and a fantastic beer. The other was BoBull Fett and I reviewed that for the premier episode of ‘Book of Boba Fett‘.

Beer Review: The Mangalorian (Brewery Fire)

In early January I hiked with Ming in the Catoctin Mountain area of Maryland. Afterwards we stopped at Brewery Fire and I picked this up to go. This was my May the Fourth review last year. Wonderful beer, and a great brewery that loves their nerd and pop culture references.

Beer Review: BoBull Fett (Bolero Snort)

Another beer review from Bolero Snort, and this time a crowler. We traveled out to New Jersey to pick this up the day of the premier for Book of Boba Fett and then reviewed it for the show as our first of the weekly beer reviews for our “Star Wars Wednesdays”. A fantastic beer.

One of several Black Flag beers we’ve covered on the blog. A top notch brewery we love to hit up whenever we’re able to in the Maryland area. (Its about an hour and a half – plus – drive from our location near Harrisburg.) It has quickly become one of Amy’s favorite breweries. Seeing all the different brewery releases everywhere on a day like this always gives me big time FOMO feelings. Like I’m missing out on a ton of beer. I have reigned that in a lot in my older years, I no longer due to line waiting, and I tamper down mule buying too much (doing more per cost, not willing to give mules a ton of extra money, etc.). Because deep down we all know – beer is beer. As long as you enjoy the beer, it could be called “Zapp Branigan’s Fart” or it could be called “The Death Star IPA” or “IPA”, and it would all taste the same. I think its good to keep that all in perspective when getting that “FOMO” feeling.

Gettysburg’s Little Brewery Turns Three Years Old

One of Central and lower Pennsylvania’s favorite breweries is turning three years old this Saturday. Its amazing how far and what all they’ve done since opening their doors in August of 2019. Riding out a pandemic, getting acclaim countrywide, being featured prominently online from influencers, blogs, the media, and more.

Third Anniversary – August 13th, 2022

This Saturday, on August 13th, 2022, starting and kicking off at 10:00 AM (EST) at their brewery in Gettysburgh, Fourscore Beer Company is beginning their big anniversary celebration. With lots of new beer releases, as well as food trucks, beer on tap, and much much more.

Anniversary “Greatest Hits” Six Pack

To celebrate their third anniversary, Fourscore Beer Company is releasing a “greatest hits” six pack. They are re – releasing five of their greatest sours as well as one brand new beer to go with the pack. 1) Soft Swerve Dole Whip

For our 3rd anniversary, we decided to bring back 5 of our highest rated sours ever, plus one brand new addition for this year’s anniversary mixed pack!

To kick things off, we are bringing back our highest rated sour ever – the OG Soft Swerve Dole Whip! The aromatics of pineapple and vanilla bring a straight pineapple upside down cake experience. The flavor is sweet and tropical in a beer form that will absolutely remind you of the frozen dessert.

𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗸𝗲

We brought a second offering back from the OG release of Soft Swerve. We scoured back through the recipe book to see how we went about this the first time around. It all started with trying to source the best mango puree around, Alphonso Mango. Prized for its flavor, aroma and creamy texture, no other mango comes close. Pair this with our cheesecake treatment (contains dairy, because – well – Cheesecake) and you have a tropical explosion melded perfectly with lingering cheesecake.

It had to be done! We had to bring this collab with the homies from the White Rabbit back. With how it was scored, you guys thought the same. Huge amounts of tropical pineapple backed with exotic Yuzu puree and a solid heaping of coconut cream. The inspiration of this one was always a Painkiller cocktail, but with an exotic twist.

Announcing the last addition to our Anniversary mixed 6 pack releasing next Saturday. This one is not one we did before, but we think it will rate right up there with the rest!!

We got together with our good friends from Chester, NY to combine our fruited sour brain power. For our end of the collab, we took influence from true Italian gelatos and went with a concept based on one of the top selling gelato flavors, Bacio. Think milk chocolate with fresh hazelnut. We of course had to add our own twist and we conditioned it on loads of strawberry, blueberry, blackberry and boysenberry.

Foeder Aged Farmhouse Wit with Peaches – We took our mixed culture fermented farmhouse with local grain that spent over a year in our custom foeders and conditioned it on hundreds of pounds of local Adams County freestone peaches for nearly an entire year. Post aging, we bottle conditioned it for the most natural experience possible, lending a nicely carbonated yet still soft textured experience.

𝗜 𝗔𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴

Hazy Triple IPA w/ wine powder – Built off a base of American 2 Row and Chit malts with loads of malted and flaked oats and a very large dose of powdered Australian Sauvignon Blanc whole grape powder. Hopped in the kettle with Calypso and Centennial Cryo and triple dry hopped with Kohatu, Citra Cryo and Emerald Spire. The grape powder provides a melon forward aromatic profile that is followed by notes of under ripe pineapple and pine needles. The grape follows through in the flavor on top of a soft and juicy base. More floral notes are present here along with watermelon rind, candied pineapple and bright citrus.

𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗶 𝗚𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗿

(15%) Blended Barrel Aged Imperial Stout with Coffee, Peanut Butter, Marshmallow and Vanilla. We took stock from 4 different barrel aged stouts (16 month Templeton Rye, 12 month Buffalo Trace, 3 year Four Roses OESK and 3 year Four Roses OBSO), blended them together and aged them extensively on pounds of Tahitian Vanilla beans. We then added peanut butter powder, bourbon barrel aged coffee and marshmallow to give the ultimate sweet treat.

This weekend we are celebrating Round 3 and are super excited to have our Anniversary release collab with @otherhalfnyc!!!

Hazy DIPA Collab w/ Other Half

Built off of a base of American Pilsner, and various oats and wheat. Hopped in the kettle with Citra Incognito and Motueka, then triple dry hopped with Citra Spectrum, Nectaron and Riwaka. Fermented with a brand new Thiolized yeast strain from our friends at Omega. The aromatics are all fresh peaches and white grapefruit with a slightly over ripe pineapple backdrop over a bright golden hue. The mouthfeel is lush and creamy with more peach, pineapple and just enough bitter for a balance. The ABV is well hidden and deceitful.

Rum Barrel Aged Fruited Sour – How could we only do one collab with the homies from @otherhalfnyc? We took our barrel aged sour game to the next level on this one. After sharing around the first take on our barrel aged Jahmba at a fest, we figured that we needed to combine forces to make a beer that is truly next level. We aged our house sour base in a rum barrel and then took this cocktail influenced concept and added a ton of jammy fresh strawberry puree. After getting that perfect daiquiri consistency and flavor, we brought the next level of intrigue in with some top notch lychee puree. The combo provided to be sweet, boozy and flat out amazing.

Beers…. Mmmmm….. Beers….

There are so many things to unpack about this beer. I feel like I’m always on the hunt for the next tasty hazy IPA…and let me tell you I like them hazy!  That perfect Hazy IPA reminds me what it feels like when Homer has that drooling eye roll moment.

The tropical and citrusy aroma of Phantomania quickly took me away to a better place than central pa during a freezing rainy day!  It must be this fabulous hop combination.  It ends on a bitter taste, but it just cleanses that palate and you are ready for the next satisfying sip.

Beer Review

Beer: Phantomania
Brewery: Fourscore Beer Co.
Style: IPA – Triple New England / Hazy
ABV: 11%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: For our foray into using Phantasm Powder (a thiol rich substance derived from NZ Sauv Blanc grape skins) we chose a triple ipa with various forms of Citra and Motueka hops.  The grist is compromised of a base of American Pilsner malt, British Golden Promise and malted oats, backed by touched of flaked oats CaraFoam, wheat malt, and unmalted wheat.  Hopped in the Whirlpool with Citra Incognto and Motueka, and a double dry hopped with doses of Phantasm Powder, Citra Cryo and more Motueka before a final dose of Citra Spectrum.  The aroma is sweet lime peel, white gummy bear and pink grapefruit driven, leading to a creamy body.  The flavor is straight lime sherbert with hints of ripe mango, leading to a finish that’s a little dry with a hint….

I am in complete agreement, there are not enough characters in an untapped description in order to describe Phantomania.

I had never heard of phantasm power….is it just me??  I quickly ran to the google-later to conquer my questions.  According to Bisonbrew.com “Phantasm Powder is a brand new product from New Zealand. It’s basically pulverized freeze-dried Sauvignon Blanc Grapes. What it contributes to beer is a massive charge of thiols: compounds that drive intense tropical fruit flavor and aroma.” Ah, that is where the tropical citrusy cloud comes from.  Chef’s Kiss!

Hang on just a minute.  As a former wino, ok wino currently in remission, sauvignon blanc grapes are a favorite. I suppose it depends on how good each season is for how readily available or how tasty each grape skin.  In November Porchdrinking.com reported it is still “one of the most unique and hard-to-get beer ingredients on the market today.” https://www.porchdrinking.com/articles/2021/11/03/phantasm-powder/

Please tell me we aren’t going to pretend to not talk about the elephant in the room.  Am I the only one that had no idea that ABV was 11%?  This nice, light, citrusy beer is a BEAST.  I can easily say this is one of my top 10 fav beers of 2021.  Yes, this Phantasm powder has been boggling my mind since then!  I intend to drink many more beers with phantasm powder to compare.  Let’s be honest I’ll be drinking many more beers regardless, but load up on this good stuff.

Had to go back and revisit this beauty last night with this being ‘stout season’ and what all… despite how nice and warm its been. But anyway, this has been one I’ve been meaning to review for a while, since I finally got my hands on a four pack of it back around August I believe. I’ve left one in the fridge for a nice night to drink and do up a review, and that is exactly what I got for you here.

This is one of many (many) nerdy or pop culture beers I’ve done. Yesterday I listed some in my review for Super Villain. So we can add this to that growing list of beers.

As I said yesterday: “Nerd culture definitely speaks to me. Look at my numerous beer reviews on here that are Star Wars themed, or video game themed, or some TV show themed. Jon Voight’s Car, Out of Order – Blue Milk, Moon of Vega, This is the Way, This is Nut The Fluff You’re Looking For, etc. You can see Josh also is very fond of nerd culture / pop culture and beers clashing with his latest review – Terpenes in Time.”

So instead of lamenting, and worrying about the election results and letting anxiety run amok, and with The Mandalorian episode two (of season two) coming out tomorrow, and since today is International Stout Day, why not do a fun, Star Wars themed stout for today’s blog and beer review.

After taking my dog (Leela) for a walk, which I did as a way of pausing my work on this review – because I’m the ultimate procrastinator, it was such a beautiful day that I had to sit out and do some day drinking.

So I ended up having a fantastic IPA from Stickman Brews – The Growfather (gotta love a Godfather beer / hop pun) (don’t worry, this will be a review soon), and then I took down the hops finally. Then I decided to finish the last of my Wookie Monster stouts.

So what should have been done around 12 – noon – is now only getting finished up at 5PM, and before I head over to Drew’s to do tonight’s stream.

Which I also picked out the stouts for tonight’s stream, since it’s International Stout Day, I decided we’d have nothing but stouts for the stream.

Well, minus the Wookie Monster…. since I drank that now. Which, speaking of that, lets get to this review and finish up today’s post!

Beer: Wookie Monster
Brewery: Fourscore Beer Co
Style: Stout – Imperial / Double
ABV: 9%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: Brewed with malted oats, chit malt, flaked oats and Maris otter base with a variety of specialty malts. Conditioned on over 100 lbs of Oreo cookies, along with organic cacao nibs and Madagascar Bourbon vanilla beans along with milk sugar. Medium bodied to restrain the sweetness, but still full enough to satisfy. Liquid Oreo cookies in a glass with a “managable” abv!

I’ll lean on an old favorite saying for the appearance – its black; as black as Razor Ramon’s hair. (Not Scott Hall’s hair; Razor Ramon’s.) This is the epitome of black, like those materials that block all light and absorb it, like black holes, its a silk, smooth looking black, with a very thin head to it, the head was off white cream to slight brown. Small head but with dispersed bubbles.

Nose to this is extreme Oreo chocolate / fudge chocolate smell. The cacao nibs really makes the Oreo cookie smell pop. There is some sweetness to this, like the white cream filling, you get vanilla from the beans, Oreo cream, and the milk sugar. It ends with a hint of the bourbon but so faint, like its drifting on the wind. The chocolate is the most overwhelming aroma to this.

Then we get to taste….. and ohmergerrrrdddd this is amazing. “Amazeballs” as the cool hip kids that I hang out with say…. But in all serious, this is one hundred and thirty eight percent delicious. If you like chocolate and you like dark heavy stouts, then this is everything you could ask for. Immediately on the first sip you get blasted with the heavy chocolate coming from the cocoa nibs and Oreo cookies. Heavy. Strong. Blam. Right out the gate, no waiting for it. Then as you sip you get in that smoothness, that silkiness, that gentle relaxing creaminess that comes from the vanilla cream part of the Oreos, from the Madagascar vanilla beans, and from the milk sugar. But, right at the end, it has a little bit of a kick of bourbon, enough to make this feel boozier, to taste boozier, to lend this like a very rich dark backbone to an already amazing brew. This feels heavier and denser and richer and boozier than its 9% belies, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I really think the 9% “manageable ABV” is tucked away and hidden because the beer feels more like a 11-12%. Its definitely not one to pound or chugg or shotgun or crush a four pack of. But that takes nothing away from how amazing this beer is. The flavors all work together so perfectly well, and its so rich and creamy that it goes down very smooth, its just so dense and heavy that you’ll fill full from drinking one. The chocolate and the vanilla combine perfectly in this, just like they do in real Oreos, that its so fantastically done. Hopefully this will be brewed again because this is downright phenomenal.

Now remember everyone, Chewbacca is a Wookie, and he is 8 feet tall, but he does *NOT* live on Endor with 3 foot tall Ewoks. Wookies are from Kashyyyk and live there, (or out in the galaxy) not on Endor with the Ewoks.

The most notable member of this species was the warrior Chewbacca, Han Solo‘s best friend and co-pilot, who played a vital role in the Clone Wars during the defense of Kashyyyk, the Galactic Civil War by aiding the Rebel Alliance in their fight against the Galactic Empire, and the war against the First Order. They were quite strong, and were known to rip people’s arms out of their sockets when provoked. By now I’m sure you are all sick of your friends on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or even by text or phone or SnapChat or WhatsApp or Zoom or Flim-Flam-Floom or Blue Milk or Bantha Fodder or whatever telling you “May the Fourth Be With You” or some such ‘garbage’ or nonsense right? Maybe you don’t know the difference between a Dianoga and a Ronto? Or remember that the green Nautalan Jedi Master that attacked Chancellor Palpatine / Darth Sidious in Episode III – Revenge of the Sith was Kit Fisto (c’mon…. with a name like that how couldn’t you remember him?), or that the Prune Face guy from Return of the Jedi when they attack the Bunker on the Endor moon was Orriamarko…… Maybe sportsball is more your thing. Either way, pro-Star Wars or anti-Star Wars, or Luke-Warm (ah, see what I did there?) to Star Wars, there is still good beers to be had about Star Wars or similar nerdy things.

So as any reader here to the blog will know, I am a huge Star Wars nerd. Starting back to when I was in 6th grade. Over at a sleep over a friend had Star Wars cards (Decipher’s SW:CCG – Star Wars Customizable Card Game) and he taught me to play. This led me to fall in love with Star Wars by watching the movies, and got me going to a local card shop called Omnidon’s in Hummelstown. This is where I ended up meeting friends D. Scott and R. Dibeler and a whole host of other people too numerous to even begin to list.

As I grew older, I watched the Original Trilogy (OT), the Special Edition Original Trilogy (SE-OT), the Prequel Trilogy (PT) and reading a list of books longer than I have time to type out here. (Authors like Timothy Zahn, Michael Stackpole, Matthew Woodring Stover, James Luceno, etc, etc, etc.). I even named my youngest daughter Mara (those who know – will know).

Flash forward to Disney buying the franchise, and at the time my oldest daughter was 7. I was ecstatic to get to watch new Star Wars movies with her in theater. In preparation we watched episodes 4 (A New Hope), 5 (Empire Strikes Back), and 6 (Return of the Jedi). We saw Episode 7 – The Force Awakens in IMAX at the Whitaker Center. She was hooked. She loved Rey, she loved BB-8 (she was already hooked by Star Wars, already loved R2-D2 and Chewbacca and Yoda). Over the years we saw Rogue One and The Last Jedi in theaters as well, and even Solo before it went to Netflix. (Last day possible in theater to see that one). Sadly, her love for the saga waned a bit after The Last Jedi (she’s not alone there), so we didn’t see Episode 9 – Rise of Skywalker in theater. But, that is part of our “May the Fourth” today – getting to watch it on Disney+ (uploaded to the streaming service today).

Fun trivia fact: my oldest daughter was featured on TV at a Phillies game (Star Wars night). She wore her Rey costume to the game and they had her dance with the Phillie Phanatic and some of the 501st Legion (cosplayers) who were there dressed as Rey, Stormtroopers, Kylo Ren, Vader, Leia, Chewbacca, and Luke.

…So…. whats all this got to do with beer right? Well, yesterday, me and my oldest two daughters made the trek down to Gettysburg to Fourscore Beer Co. For the weekend they were doing a Star Wars themed menu, including the release of ‘Wookie Monster’, a 9% oreo cookie stout; as well as food items – Sarlaac Fries (french fries, beercheese, and cole slaw on top), as well as Mynock Gravy and Biscuits (chipped cream rib-eye gravy and butter biscuits), as well as a cherry tomato and mozzarella salad. We stopped; and I got a food item of each (Lily got the Sarlaac fries and loved them, Olivia-Grace got the salad and ate it as we did the Auto-Tour, and I got the Mynock Gravy and Biscuits – fantastic). Unfortunately, the Wookie Monster was sold out. (As you can imagine, that was going to be a big feature of today’s blog post). [Sigh]. I did get a crowler of the Mango Marshmellow Jahmba. Can’t wait to crack that open and devour it. I’ve yet to have had a bad beer from them.

Here on the blog however, I have done several beer reviews of geeky, nerdy, Star Wars, and other similar movie franchises. Pop cultural references always plays a big role in a lot of breweries beer names and even branding.

My most recent Star Wars themed beer (and beer review) was the above mentioned ‘This is Nut the Fluff You’re Looking For‘.

This was an absolutely amazing 15% Imperial Double Stout by Fourscore Beer Co. Easily a contender for Top 10 (New) Beers I’ve had for this year (granted; this year will probably see me drink less NEW beers than previous years just due to everything going on). The Untappd Description reads: “Brewed with a British Maris Otter base, loads of malted oats and a variety of roasted and crystal malts with a touch of lactose. Heaps of peanut flour were used in the whirlpool and the wort was racked onto a ton of marshmallow fluff prior to fermentation. More marshmallow is added at the end of fermentation along with peanut butter powder. Huge aromas and flavors of fresh peanut butter and marshmallows straight from the bag. A rich malty base of caramel and chocolate tones carry the flavors to the finish. Brewed with Founders Club member Eric Acumen.” If you like peanut butter beers; this will definitely be right up your alley. There is still bottles for sale at Fourscore Beer Co (as of 5.4.20). Another fun beer I did a review of was “This is The Way” by Broken Goblet. Another Star Wars themed beer, though this time based off the hit Disney+ show ‘The Mandalorian’ rather than from the movies.

Jokingly calling it a ME-IPA (Mos Eisley IPA) rather than NE-IPA (New England IPA) Broken Goblet made one delicious IPA, be a ME-IPA or NE-IPA or whatever you want to call it. This is a juicy, tasty, easy drinking IPA. No bitter bite, slight creamyness to it, nice flowing beer. You can read my review of it here: “Beer Review: This is the Way“.

And where would I be if I didn’t mention Equilibrium’s “Moon of Vega”. If we’re talking Star Wars, we have to talk Space Balls! If you only ever see two space or sci-fi parody movies (and so far, you only really need to see these two) it best be Space Balls and Galaxy Quest. Anything else is inferior.

Moon of Vega is a collaboration NE-IPA by Equilibrium Brewery and J. Wakefield Brewing; and they absolutely nailed this out of the galaxy. This was a super tasty, delicious NE-IPA that was creamy, hoppy, juicy, dank, and all the things you look for in a NE IPA. A 4pk of this just wasn’t enough. As you can see, I had this during one of our podcasts for “So A Mexican and A Scott Walk Into a Bar…” a podcast ran by some of The Extended Beer Thrillers family – D. Scott and Esteban. While not a Star Wars beer, I did enjoy reading a Star Wars book and drinking a wonderful beer in the nice sunny afternoon earlier. The beer was Blue Hippo by Boneshire Brew Works (look for a review of that soon) and the book is Star Wars: Rebel Rising by Beth Revis.

Its nice to take a break amidst everything going on to get take your mind off the world, off the news cycle, off of the coronavirus, COVID-19, and everything else thats just going on in this insane and crazy world. Being in quarantine and lockdown can be a bit like staring into the abyss, and as Nietzsche would say about that: “Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.” (Its not often you get to use a Frederich Nietzsche quote in a beer review, so when the opportunity presents itself, you just have to do it.)

This is certainly an interesting time we are finding ourselves in; as is often quoted and said (and the phrase I like to use) its an “unprecedented time”. Nobody knows what’s going on, theres uncertainty everywhere, but what I do know, is that craft breweries are still out there with amazing beers – and will either do delivery, to-go, or curbside pickup. From places like Fourscore Beer Co in Gettysburg, to Boneshire Brew Works in Rutherford / Harrisburg, to Troegs Brewing in Hershey, to Roundguys in Lansdale, Two Rivers Brewing in Extol, and so many more to even list. This isn’t exactly how I planned this beer review to start up, but I’ve kind of had it half-envisioned as I went to write it but the beginning is always in flux when I start these, and is usually dependent on what’s going on. I build up a mental outline (I don’t physically outline anything, even when working on my novel) and I just get into the flow and let it go (once again, same goes for the novel, let the characters dictate how everything flows and where the story takes it). So thats mostly how my beer reviews and blog posts go as well. General upbeats and thoughts and things I want to mention before getting to the actual beer review, where once I get to that, I break down the actual beer as per how the beer tasted. So you – as well as I – never know what I’m getting when I write these reviews. So there’s a look into the weird and crazy window into how I write these blog posts. (Sorry this whole paragraph was pretty skippable, but it does kind of lead to the beer…. I promise….). So before I go too far off the rails on how things are bleak right now due to coronavirus / COVID-19 or how I have a crazy writing style, let me get into what led to picking up this beer, and then eventually get into the actual beer review.

Firstly, let’s move back to Sunday (3.22.20). I had wanted to go to Gettysburg on Saturday (3.21.20) but time slipped by on the day to make it really feasible and ended up not making it. Two co-workers who I had been with just hours before the imposed quarantining (due to work at the casino) – Ming and Don – met with me for the trip to Gettysburg. Have no fears, we practiced safe measures – social distancing, scrubbing everything and anything we touched (or saw others touch), and used copious amounts of hand sanitizer; coughed into elbows, etc, etc, etc. So have no fear, there was no contamination or spreading because of our visit.

I had been really eager to check out Fourscore Beer Co since they opened. Last time I was in Gettysburg was last summer with my daughter, and I checked out the Battlefield Brew Works (first time visiting there). But, Fourscore Beer Co looked to be much better, as well as knowing Wade Leedy from the Central Whalerz group, and having talked to so many people from the group about the brewery, I was super psyched about getting to check the brewery out. Unfortunately, flash to the coronavirus, and my first visit is just getting to-go food and beer. But alas, we made the best of it, and promised to visit again, under better circumstances, and when we can fully check out the brewery (hopefully my usually yearly trip to Gettysburg come July / August).

So, Don, Ming, and I ordered as we were about twenty minutes out from the brewery. We were going to get the Eric Aumen Patty Melt, but unfortunately they ran through supplies the day before, but we all settled on the Fourscore Burger (they got coleslaw, I got fries), and all three of us agreed, it was absolutely phenomenal. Top ten burger in my experience with breweries. Just fantastic fries as well, so all around it was a great meal. Ordered the ‘This is Nut the Fluff You’re Looking For’ to drink later (as you’ll find out for the review here), and got a four pack of Timekeeper DIPA. (I might do a review for Timekeeper DIPA, as its a great 8.3% Double IPA of pure juicy goodness.)

We took our food and beverages (Don got the coffee brown ale; Ming doesn’t drink) and went and parked at the parking lot adjacent to the Gettysburg Cemetery. (Which is also only two or so blocks down from the brewery.)

After eating we then began walking towards the Pennsylvania Monument and checking out the monuments, signs, and what-not along the way. This was Ming’s first time visiting the battlefield, and Don’s since he was in elementary school. I try to go every year (with a few misses) at least once to walk the battlefields. Gettysburg is a beautiful area, a gorgeous town, and despite the tragic history and circumstances, a peaceful, quiet, meditative place.

Don’t worry, we practiced our social distancing, even in tough places, like the Pennsylvania (PA) Monument, where getting to the top, and getting to the bottom, required a bit of waiting since its basically a one-person stairway.

Ok, I’m sure you’re all sick of hearing about my escapades with Gettysburg, and just want to get right to the actual beer review; the sole purpose of this right? The reason you’re here, isn’t to hear about my trip to Gettysburg, or about how I write, or about the coronavirus or COVID-19. The reason you are here, is because you want to read about how amazing this beer is, am I right?! And don’t worry, it is one hell of a beer!

Beer: This is Nut the Fluff You’re Looking For
Brewery: Fourscore Beer Co.
Style: Stout – Imperial / Double
ABV: 15%
IBU: None
Untappd Description: Brewed with a British Maris Otter base, loads of malted oats and a variety of roasted and crystal malts with a touch of lactose. Heaps of peanut flour were used in the whirlpool and the wort was racked onto a ton of marshmallow fluff prior to fermentation. More marshmallow is added at the end of fermentation along with peanut butter powder. Huge aromas and flavors of fresh peanut butter and marshmallows straight from the bag. A rich malty base of caramel and chocolate tones carry the flavors to the finish. Brewed with Founders Club member Eric Aumen. (The patty melt was also named after Eric Aumen as well.)

Firstly; let me just say this is an amazing beer. This was only my second beer from Fourscore (my first being the Timekeeper DIPA mentioned earlier), but this absolutely blew me away. Its 13$ per bottle, and they have quite a bit left at their brewery (so if you’re in the area, make sure to stop by and grab one, you won’t regret it!)

Appearance is just how you want your stout, dark, tall, and handsome.I think thats how it goes right? As soon as you open the cap and crack her open, you see the release that shows the great carbonation for this beautiful brew. It pours dark and heavy, thick, and gives off a delicious looking brown creamy foamy head. Interspersed bubbles, varying sizes. The beer itself is a Razor Ramon jet-black hair dark, and the head is a rich creamy brown. As you drink, it leaves a pretty lacing down the glass.

Aroma is just mouth-watering. Its hard to even want to take the time to smell this because you just want to get to drinking it. Heavy peanut, light marshmellow, heavy malt – mostly caramel and roast malts, just gives this a genuine, delicious, heavenly smell. You get a slight chocolate smell but its subdued behind the powerful peanut butter. There is also a light vanilla smell that could be the lactose in combination with the marshmellow or could just be the marshmellow itself, hard to fully distinguish. There is definitely a lot here with the aroma between the peanut butter, the marshmellow, and all of the various malts and oats of caramel, chocolate, roasted, and crystal.

Finally… getting to take a sip of this gorgeous beer…. and …. holy… wow…. just explosive flavor right out of the gate. Like a rambunctious puppy as soon as you get home from a long day of work (or after unlocking it out of the bedroom while you were in the other room trying to work from home due to quarantine), this explodes right out of the gate with mucho mucho mucho flavor. Firstly, let me straight up tell you, you are not going to be tasting the 15%; the high ABV on this is so well hidden, you can finish that entire bottle without realizing it at all. Its super smooth, but with a very heavy thick mouthfeel, but its so drinkable, so tasty, and so well rounded, that the high ABV never even becomes a factor or noticeable. Describing taste for this is simple – while its not something I enjoy as food; as a beer this totally worked – if you’ve ever had a fluffernutter sandwhich. Thats what this is. (With a lot more going on though.) The peanutbutter is definitely the most overwhelming flavor – and I’m a huge sucker for peanutbutter beers too (Molly Pitcher’s is one of my absolute all time favorites, and back at the Kegs and Eggs on the 14th, the Robin Hood Banana and Peanutbutter beer was amazing as well), but regardless of it being one of my favorite ingredients, this beer would still be a home run (or better yet, a grand slam). The marshmellow and lactose lend it a creamy and smooth texture and taste and really helps hide the 15% ABV. The various malts and oats has a very delicious backbone to this beer, and provides a wonderful secondary layer of flavors to this. This has the perfect balance of a thick, smooth, textured, rich, full bodied, aromatic, delicious beer. It has pretty much everything you want in a beer, in spades. This has been one of the most well-rounded stouts I’ve had in a long time. I cannot recommend again if you are in the Gettysburg area, stopping in at Fourscore and picking this up.

I want to say congratulations to Wade Leedy and Eric Aumen on a wonderful and fantastic beer. I also want to say here, I am a total sucker for the name and label for this beer as well. Great Star Wars reference, and awesome Star Wars beer label. This will be one of the bottles I keep for the wall, just based on label alone.
