Pine Creek Spirits, located in Elizabethtown PA, in what was at one time the Funk Brewing taproom (see Funk Brewing Fire). (See also: Funk Brewing Taproom closing and Pine Creek Spirits Taking Over.) Located at 28 S Market St, Elizabethtown, PA 17022, the spirits taproom is now permanently closed.

Pine Creek Spirits Logo

Pine Creek Spirits announced on their Instagram post that they will be officially closed, going forward from today.

Their post today reads:

After taking a step back, we have to face the reality that we do not have the ability or resources to reopen. We’re incredibly proud of the team that we had over the years. They fought through a pandemic, a fire, and a failed business partnership. Many people would have thrown in the towel after one of those obstacles, but they perservered over many years to keep fighting for our business to stay alive.

Thank you also to all of our customers. We got to know many of you over the years and you were awesome to us. It makes it that much harder to close the doors. We hope you had as much fun as we did and hopefully we’ll see all of you down the road.

Pine Creek Spirits (Instagram Post – June 29th, 2025)

They previously recently posted this on social media as well:

Sorry everyone, we are taking a week to reorganize and won’t be open. We hope to see everyone at the beginning of next week!

-Pine Creek Spirits (Facebook Post – June 23rd, 2025)

So it looks like they are officially closed. Which is a shame, as its a wonderful location, and a great spot in Elizabethtown. Perhaps a new taproom will go in there, possibly a craft brewery taking over the spot, like how it used to be Funk Brewery’s taproom. Who knows. But we’ll keep you updated if anything does happen with the spot, so keep your eyes peeled on the blog. Cheers.

The Beer Thrillers: Beer Review Roundup

🌧️ Storm the Field – Tröegs Independent Brewing

This review hit home in more ways than one. A tribute to local sports culture and the Pennsylvania brewing scene, this beer combined citrusy brightness with clean bitterness and nostalgic vibes. With Tröegs being a regional juggernaut, this review blended personal insight, sharp tasting notes, and regional pride. A fan favorite.

🌽 Hocktoberfest – Sterling Pig Brewery

Our deep dive into Sterling Pig’s Oktoberfest-style lager was as flavorful as the beer itself. Combining BBQ, malt-forward notes, and Philly-area love, this review celebrated local flavor in every sense. We especially loved how the pun-heavy branding paired with the beer’s clean, biscuity body and subtle caramel finish.

🎃 Chocolate Pumpkin Stout – Homebrew Review

Sometimes the best beers are brewed at home. Our review of a rich, decadent chocolate pumpkin stout explored the joys (and quirks) of homebrewing. With roasted malt complexity, seasonal spice, and dark chocolate depth, this one proved that even DIY beers can steal the spotlight.

👻 Juicin’ Voorhees – Pariah Brewing Company

Released on Friday the 13th, our horror-themed review of this hazy DIPA was as fun to write as it was to drink. With juicy peach, grapefruit bite, and a smooth finish, this 8.1% ABV beer slashed expectations. Our Jason Voorhees tribute made for a seasonal standout with hop-head flair.

Beer Review: Juicin’ Voorhees (Pariah Brewing Company) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/06/13/beer-review-juicin-voorhees-pariah-brewing-company/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-juicin-voorhees-pariah-brewing-company Sat, 14 Jun 2025 00:15:13 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16427 Beer Review: Juicin’ Voorhees (Pariah Brewing Company)

It’s Friday the 13th, and as the chilling wind creeps through the trees and masked slashers stalk our screens, there’s only one beer that belongs in your glass tonight: Juicin’ Voorhees by Pariah Brewing Company. With a name that nods to the hockey-masked legend of horror, this hazy Double IPA doesn’t sneak up on you—it kicks in the door, machete first. But instead of screams, it leaves behind a trail of juicy citrus, smooth bitterness, and pure hop-fueled satisfaction.

Juicin’ Voorhees by Pariah Brewing Company

☁️ Appearance – Haze of the Undead

Much like the fog rolling across Crystal Lake, Juicin’ Voorhees pours an ominously thick golden haze with a glowing, almost radioactive glow. Its creamy white head clings like cobwebs on a rickety cabin, leaving lacing that lingers long after each sip. Ominous, inviting, and impossible to ignore.

👃 Aroma – Frighteningly Fruity

From the first whiff, this beer hits hard with grapefruit zest, peach nectar, and a whisper of dank tropical fruit—like a fruit basket left behind at a murder scene. There’s a sinister edge of orange rind and a faint herbal note in the background, hinting that not everything is as sweet as it seems.

👅 Flavor – Slashingly Smooth

Where most slashers go for the jugular, Juicin’ Voorhees chooses a more subtle, creeping approach.

  • Up front, you get a wave of peach, grapefruit, and tangerine—a fruit-forward assault that’s bright and punchy.

  • The mid-palate turns slightly bitter, with soft pith and a touch of earthy dankness.

  • The finish? Clean, slightly resinous, and just warm enough to remind you this beast clocks in at 8.1% ABV.

It walks the line between sweet and bitter with the finesse of a seasoned stalker—never too cloying, never too aggressive.

👻 Mouthfeel – Smooth as a Silent Stalk

Medium-bodied with a creamy, pillowy mouthfeel, Juicin’ Voorhees glides across the palate like a shadow in the woods. No alcohol burn, no heavy syrup—just a chillingly clean, soft experience that leaves you watching your back… and reaching for another sip.

🩸 Overall Impressions – Hazy Horror Done Right

Pariah Brewing has crafted something special here. Juicin’ Voorhees isn’t just a gimmick beer with a horror-themed name—it’s a legit, well-balanced hazy DIPA that stands tall even among the genre’s heavyweights. The name might scream slasher flick, but the beer inside is all finesse and flavor.

If you’re a fan of juicy IPAs, or just someone looking for the perfect beer to pair with your Friday the 13th binge-watch session, this one’s a no-brainer. Literally.

📊 Stats & Reception

  • ABV: 8.1%

  • IBUs: 24

  • Style: Hazy / New England Double IPA

  • Untappd Score: 3.9 / 5 (1,200+ check-ins)

  • Availability: Limited seasonal release, often around Halloween or fall

🍽️ Pairings – What to Eat While You Scream

  • Buffalo wings with ghost pepper sauce – feel the burn

  • Sharp cheddar and soft pretzels – smooth meets bold

  • Pumpkin pie or caramel apple tarts – because horror needs dessert too

  • Grilled sausage and onions – hearty flavors to match the DIPA bite

🪦 Final Words – Don’t Sleep on This Slasher

Whether you’re hiding under a blanket watching Jason Lives or sitting around a fall campfire waiting for strange noises, Juicin’ Voorhees is a killer choice. Bold, juicy, and just creepy enough to make your skin crawl—in the best way.

So this Friday the 13th, raise a glass to horror, hops, and Pariah Brewing’s tribute to the boogeyman of hazy IPAs. Just don’t turn your back on the fridge. You never know when another can might sneak up behind you…

🍺 Juicin’ Voorhees Review – A Killer Brew for Friday the 13th

Juicin’ Voorhees is a seasonal Double/Hazy IPA from Pariah Brewing (based in San Diego, CA), clocking in at 8.1% ABV and 24 IBUs. With its ominous name—a play on a horror-movie icon—it delivers an inviting yet smooth entry into the fall IPA scene.

Voodoo Brewing Announces Their North Shore Location is Closing https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/06/02/voodoo-brewing-announces-their-north-shore-location-is-closing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=voodoo-brewing-announces-their-north-shore-location-is-closing Mon, 02 Jun 2025 20:25:28 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16401 Voodoo Brewing Announces Their North Shore Location is Closing

Voodoo Brewing announced via social media that their Pittsburgh, North Shore location is closing. Tuesday – June 3rd, 2025 will be its last day where you’ll be able to have a chance to go in and grab a beer. They opened August 27th, 2022. (Voodoo Brewing to Open Pittsburgh North Shore Location on August 27th) The Pittsburgh Pub is located on the North Shore at 337 N Shore Dr, Pittsburgh, PA 15212 (in between PNC Park and Acrisure Stadium; formerly Heinz Field).

Several Voodoo Brewpubs closed in 2024 and even already in 2025.

Voodoo North Shore Brewpub Announces Closing

Voodoo Pittsburgh Pub in North Shore Announces Closing

Yesterday via social media at 12:48 PM EST they announced that their brewpub on the North Shore (near the PNC Park and Southern Tier’s location) will be closing, with the “last day to grab a beer with us here” is Tuesday (June 3rd, 2025).

Their post reads:

What a blast it’s been serving the North Shore.
After almost three years, we’ve made the call to close the pub so we can double down on what we do best: brewing world-class beer and making it more available throughout Pennsylvania. This shift will allow us to improve our production, expand distribution, and support our growing network of franchise locations across the country.
We’re entering the final days of our North Shore pub and Tuesday will be the last chance to grab a beer with us at this location. We will be open tomorrow, Monday June 2nd, at 2 PM serving up $5 draft beers.
Thank you to everyone who stopped in and supported us on the North Shore and to our staff who made it happen every single day. If you’ve been meaning to visit, now’s the time.
Come raise a glass and help us close things out right. It’s not good bye, it’s I’ll see you later.
The comment section is certainly interesting, with a mixed reaction of “oh no” to “wow, only two days notice for employees” to “what a shocker, another Voodoo Brewpub closing”. One commenter in particular saying:
woohoo 30 people no longer have jobs and they gave everyone a 2 day notice during the busiest time of the year. 🔥 another amazing business choice. ill never forget when they decided to lay off several people on christmas eve and when the owner TRIED to make us take down our pride flags. i hope this brand goes to shit as its clearly on its way there.
V’s down
With a follow up reply to that comment:

I was hoping someone would call them out on this one! I don’t understand why companies think that’s ok! I’m sure most of the hiring for summer has already taken place so that leaves these employees in an even tougher spot!

The comments followed up with rumors of what might be going into the location – possibly a “Shorty’s”.

They later posted this, at 6:09 PM via Facebook:

Voodoo Brewing Co. Pittsburgh Pub Talking About Monday’s Hours

We will be open tomorrow, Monday, June 2nd beginning at 2pm for $5 Draft beers. Come see the gang one last time on the North Shore before we close our doors Tuesday Night.

Voodoo Brewing Co. Pittsburgh Pub (Facebook Post)

Just as before, mixed comments were left. Voodoo Brewing hasn’t responded to any as of my time of writing this (4:00 PM June 2nd).

One comment saying:

I do not understand why anyone would want to waste their time and money for a company that has zero respect for their employees.
For your business to give your employees no notice that they are losing their jobs is absolutely absurd and speaks volumes.
You guys fucking suck, this is a blessing in disguise for your whole crew. They deserve better

Voodoo Brewpubs Closing

Seems to be a rash of Voodoo Brewing locations closing not just in 2024, but continuing into 2025. They are a franchise based brewery, so there is numerous locations. Some as far away (from Pennsylvania) as Reno Nevada (which has closed), which you can read about here: Voodoo Brewing Closes Reno Location.

Voodoo Brewpubs That Closed in 2024 or 2025

As of June 2025, at least six Voodoo Brewing Company locations have closed during 2024 and 2025:

  1. Fort Worth, Texas: Opened in July 2024 and closed by late October 2024 due to insufficient revenue to cover operational costs.

News and Updates

When we get more information, we’ll be sure to update this, and possibly make further articles with more news and updates about Voodoo Brewing, this location, and reasons for the closing.

For More Information on Voodoo Brewing

We have the following articles you can read:

For more information on Voodoo Brewing, the following comes via Untappd.

They are considered a “micro brewery” by Untappd, and listed as located at Meadville, PA. They have 691 unique beers and over 571,000 (just thirty – four shy of 572,000) ratings, with a global average rating of 3.94. As I click and open up their Untappd bio, I am going to assume it was hacked (or possibly an employee about to lose their job or just lost their job that still has access to the Untappd login ability) because this is what it says:

This is Voodoo Brewery, based in Meadville, PA, that opened a location in Valrico, FL. They have horrible beer that they brew themselves and skunk beer from other breweries; the service is atrocious and the vibes are mid at best despite their budget. Do not go to this expansionist corporate hell hole

Before clicking the “read more” you are just shown: “This is Voodoo Brewery, based in Meadville, PA, that opened a location in Valrico, F”

(I am quite curious when this update and change to their Untappd bio was made.)

When Canada Attacked Yuengling! https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/05/19/when-canada-attacked-yuengling/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=when-canada-attacked-yuengling Mon, 19 May 2025 19:44:46 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16369 When Canada Attacked Yuengling!

Thirty years ago, Canada struck at the brewing pride of Pennsylvania. The sudden, unexpected broadside was aimed at Yuengling. At stake was the very definition of “America.”

Yuengling Lager

In 1995, Yuengling wanted to trademark the slogan “America’s Oldest Brewery” for its products. Since 1829, the brewery had been making its beer in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. However, Molson Brewery objected. Founded in 1786 in Montreal, Molson not only argued that it was older than Yuengling, but Yuengling’s use of “America” was “deceptively misdescriptive.” Molson’s attorneys claimed that “America is synonymous North America,” which definitely includes Canada. For Molson, Yuengling was being dishonest with beer drinkers in the United States and around the world.

The Yuengling family was unimpressed. At the time, fifth-generation brewery owner Richard L. Yuengling Jr. quipped, “When Kate Smith stands up and sings ‘God Bless America,’ she’s not singing about Saskatchewan.” Plus, the brewery had been using its slogan since 1957 without any confusion over what country Yuengling was located.

The Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office took up the dispute. Molson went as far as to introduce a Webster’s dictionary of geography to show that America means North America. Yuengling responded by showing that Molson’s marketing had previously referred to the brewery as Canada’s oldest instead of America’s. Clearly, Molson understood the distinction.

Anyone who has looked at the label of a Yuengling beer lately knows the end of the story. It took nearly four years for the Board to reach its decision. For the board members, there was no evidence that “the purchasing public in the United States would equate the term ‘America’ with North America, rather than the United States of America.” Case closed.

Over twenty years later, all was forgiven. In 2020, Yuengling and Molson announced a joint venture to distribute Yuengling beer farther west… in America.

Those Beers With My Mom (Happy Mother’s Day) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/05/11/those-beers-with-my-mom-happy-mothers-day/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=those-beers-with-my-mom-happy-mothers-day Sun, 11 May 2025 12:46:35 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16336 Those beers with my Mom

Grandma SueAnn being silly at Sworn Brewing

Happy Mother’s Day

I hope my mom knows she is my best friend and my best beer drinking friend!  We could literally enjoy any beverage together and it would be a great time.  Well, except rum, Grandma SueAnn can’t do rum anymore.

Ben recently joined me on a work trip and Grandma SueAnn was gracious enough to help out with Scarlet while we enjoyed a couple days away before the work trip.  For taking on such a worthy task we, of course, brought her home a selection of beers from our trip.

We started off at RAR Brewing (see my article: May the Fourth Be With You – From a Non a Star Wars Lover at RAR Brewing’s Star Wars Fest), and made our way to Macklin Brewing in the evening.  We thought of her often while perusing the crafts and art for sale amongst the street fair May the 4th be with you but on the 3rd.  That street festival would have been Grandma SueAnn’s vibe.  And then in the evening chilling at Macklin Brewery, a completely different tone than the street fair, while chatting with some other brewery goers would have fit her vibe just the same.

Saturday we visited Big Oyster Brewery, Misspillion River Brewing, First State Brewing Company, JAKL Beer Works and Crooked Hammock Brewery.

(See our Instagram to follow along with all of our adventures visiting breweries – The Beer Thrillers on Instagram)

Before we left Big Oyster Brewery I knew we were grabbing a 4pack to go.  We decided to grab Pillars of Dankness.  It is a delicious IPA that comes in at 7% ABV and has a 3.92 rating on Untapped.  Pillars of Dankness is as juicy as it is hazy.  You are completely lost in the hazy IPA takeover but there is an over silky pillow like softness that slowly settles you down to get ready for the next sip.

Grandma SueAnn would have loved First State Brewing.  I am not entirely sure if she would have played Exploding Kittens with us, but sipping that flight and munching on the poutine would have done the trick.  We picked up a crowler of the Vibrant Beats from First State Brewing.  We already knew we were indebted to Grandma SueAnn for helping with Scarlet so we knew this was one of the brews to take home.  She is a lover of the Belgium tripels.  It comes in at 10% ABV and has a 3.94 overall rating on Untapped.  It is described as a “blend of Antique Beats (Barrel Aged Barleywine) and vibrant Thoughts (Barrel Aged Belgium Tripel with Peach).  We split this crowler with her on our second night home and paired it pizza, chicken boli and chef salad.  Vibrant Beats has just a hint of booziness but it quickly grabs your attention with a slight fruity flavor with some maltiness and finishes with a sweet honey taste.  We definitely recommend Vibrant Beats and check out the First State Brewing Company. (See our Instagram post here.)

First State Beer and Boli

We ended our evening at Crooked Hammock.  We walked in thinking this would be a snack and a flight.  Our waitress was so excited about the food and beverage selections we found ourselves ordering a flight, the street corn fries and the Papa Pig Burger.  Our waitress absolutely helped make the visit very exciting but the food was amazing  We stuffed ourselves but still only ate half of the food.  Leftovers are great so don’t worry, we polished those off.  But the flight was awesome.  We ended up going with the Banana Hammock in a 4pack to split with Grandma SueAnn, since we now have purchased more beer.  This 15% ABV Belgian Quadrupel was not boozy tasting and felt very sneaky.  We recommend trying this one AT home kids.  This has a surprising 3.73% rating on untapped, I thought for sure it would have an average of 4.0 or higher.  This one is sneaky and smooth at the same time.  It is, as Josh would call it, a big damn beer #BDB  It has a beautiful amber color and, of course, has some banana flavor to it.  But more of a caramelized banana flavor that still has the spicy Belgian yeast behind it.  I can’t wait to drink this one on a hammock

I know my mom would vibe any each and every one of these breweries with us!  Visiting a brewery is meant to be a fun and comfortable visit. Some of our fav brewery visits together have been Sworn, Troegs, Boneshire Breworks, YAH Brew and Evergrain. Grandma SueAnn has gotten to visit several breweries now with us, her list is ever growing and we definitely want to get her to more, like Fourscore Beer Co, and more in the area!

Grandma SueAnn has been to Our Town Brewery, Boneshire Brew Works, YAH Brew, Troegs Independent Craft Brewing, Ever Grain Brewing, Sworn Brewing, Official BBQ and Brewing; and she has enjoyed them all. Can’t wait for more adventures with Grandma SueAnn at breweries!

Below you can find pictures with Grandma SueAnn at each of the breweries. (The article would obviously be in remiss if we didn’t post pictures of her drinking!) As well as at her favorite place to drink — at home!

Official BBQ

We took Grandma SueAnn here to celebrate a birthday, she loved the beer, the food, and the gifts.

SueAnn at Official BBQ

Boneshire Brew Works

We got to take SueAnn to Boneshire Brew Works while Scarlet was just little yet, she enjoyed a flight and had a wonderful time hanging out with us.

SueAnn, Scarlet, Amy, and Ben at Boneshire Brew Works

Troegs Independent Craft Brewing

SueAnn came with to hang out for a Fall Fest at Troegs Brewing, we had the soft pretzel, the charcuterie and a few tasty fall beers.

Grandma SueAnn at Troegs Brewing for the Fall Fest

YAH Brew

We visited YAH Brew soon after they opened. Grandma SueAnn loved the atmosphere and the beer.

Ever Grain Brewing

SueAnn came out with me for a work event (Alzheimer’s Association) at the Ever Grain Brewing. She is always so supportive… especially if there’s beer involved!

SueAnn and Amy at Ever Grain Brewing

Sworn Brewing

After the work event at Ever Grain, how could we pass up stopping over at Sworn Brewing? Grandma SueAnn had heard so much about it and wanted to get in on those fantastic IPAs!

Our Town Brewery

Another work event brought Grandma SueAnn and I out to Lancaster. So of course…. Our Town is right there, and we had to get in on it. Grandma SueAnn decided to give the beers ‘bunny ears’ for my picture!

Our beers at Our Town Brewery (and Grandma SueAnn’s ‘bunny ears’)

Drinking at Home

Grandma SueAnn loves to ‘get down’ with some beers at home. After work, we love popping over to Grandma’s, having a beer or two to relax while Scarlet runs about the room playing. Its a great way to unwind from the long day and get to catch up with mom, enjoy some shared beer, and maybe even a great dinner to boot. She’s been featured in a few of my articles for our beer sharing:

Thanks for reading! Take your mom to a brewery, you are the reason she drinks.  Happy Mother’s Day!

Editor’s Add – On

Ben here, jumping on. I can’t let Amy post a Mother’s Day article without adding how much I love, appreciate, and respect, her hard work, dedication, and effort as a mother. She is an amazing mother and is always so wonderful, loving, caring, and doing a fantastic job of raising Scarlet. As well as being an absolutely fabulous bonus mother to my older three girls. So I want to wish Amy an above and beyond, extraordinary Mother’s Day. And I want to extend that to my own mother, and to everyone else’s mothers who have played such a pivotal role in their lives. As well as to all the mothers out there reading this article. Happy Mother’s Day everyone! Remember, you are the reason she can’t jump on a trampoline anymore – so let her enjoy some good craft beers today!

RAR during the Star Wars Festival on May 3rd

I went to the RAR Brewing “May the 4th Be with you fest but on the 3rd” but I am not a Star Wars fan.  I don’t mean I don’t like Star Wars I just never fell in love with it.  I loved watching the 3 OGs that came out years and years ago.  I will drop quotes and funny memes.  And I am assuming since I am dating the Editor of this blog, I will be forced someday to do an entire streaming of all things Star Wars.  I am here for it.

(See our article: RAR Brewing’s May the 3rd Fest)

I’m a Star Wars….

We arrived on the scene in Cambridge Maryland and scoped out the parking lot.  It was small and not surprisingly already full.  We drove a couple blocks away to a free street parking spot and pulled in ready for an afternoon of enjoying a fun brewery and street festival.  There was a mix of local older aged attendees mixed with Star Wars lovers and some dressed in Star Wars Cosplay.  The entire layout of the Festival was welcoming and relaxing.

May the 4th be with you; and I also with you (sorry, I can’t help it) fest but on the 3rd was a fun, relaxing afternoon in the quaint town of Cambridge Maryland.  There was art, music, beer, lots of beer, merch and good food.

It was a tad bit confusing on how to participate in the tasting tent at first but maybe I also can’t read the instructions.  We quickly purchased our bracelets and tickets to sample all the themed beers.  It was exciting seeing all the beers available for tasting for some stellar breweries; Bash Bros Collective, Imprint Beer Co, Burlington Beer Co, 2SP Brewing Company, Autodidact Beer, Tripping Animals Brewing, Clag, Spylgass Brewing Company, Maine Beer Company, Movement Brewing Company, Voodoo Brewing Company, Dewey Beer, Frost Beer Works, Four Point and Finback

We started off with the “Cuddle Buddies” 10% ABV Cream Triple IPA from Tripping Animals and 10.1%ABV “Even Fuller Very Circular” Triple IPA W/ Citra and Mosaic by Autodidact.  I think you already know The Beer Thrillers come in heavy.  These did not disappoint, and we quickly found a spot in the shade to chill and anticipate our next sample tastings.

Then we had to try a flight of the RAR themed beers for the day.  Swamp Planet -Hop Saturated Ale 8.5% ABV, Desert Planet -Hop Saturated Ale 8.5%, Deep Fried Porg, College Deep Friend Beers -Hop Saturated Ale 10.1% and the Dark Side DELUXE -4% ABV Blueberry, Cherry, heavy Saber -Toasted Marshmallow, a touch of Roasted Habaneros, and Midnight Pastry.  These all killed with Desert being the fav for us.

We were drooling over the food truck offerings of Fried Porg Bucket (chicken tenders with RAR seasoned waffle friends and choice of sauce), Mojo Pork Tacos, Birria Beef Tacos and Chicken tacos.  The Friend Porg bucket arrived in a square brown container; we missed the novelty of the Porg bucket offering.  The chicken tenders and fries were amazing along with a side of honey mustard.  We saw many other attendees enjoying the “deep friend Porg” along with the various taco options.

RAR’s Deep Fried Porgs

Even Fett had to get in on the Galactic Grill. Good thing he removed his helmet before eating the fries.

The second music act Black Dog Alley band provided a very mellow and friendly atmosphere among Fest goers.  Most folks walking by were swaying or bobbing their heads to the beat.  A few folks were seen dancing together.  We listened and relaxed to cover songs by the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Gnarles Barkley.

The music at the event was wonderful

This dog friendly event gave dog loving fest goers plenty to enjoy.  A friendly Pit bull puppy near us enjoyed some leftover Porg and fries.  We were immediate friends and shared some cuddles.

We purchased beer to go, some merchandise and some art from a local vendor.  We highly recommend checking out this yearly RAR May the 4th be with you events even if you aren’t a Star Wars fan.  We highly recommend checking out the quaint town of Cambridge Maryland and absolutely recommend checking out RAR Brewing company.  We can’t wait to visit again!

Beer Review: Chewbacca (Rotunda Brewing Company) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/04/29/beer-review-chewbacca-rotunda-brewing-company/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-chewbacca-rotunda-brewing-company Wed, 30 Apr 2025 02:45:07 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16296 Beer Review: Chewbacca by Rotunda Brewing Company

I first had this beer back in October of 2019. (Which feels like ancient history.) And I remember wanting to write a review of it even back then for the site…. and for some reason I never did. Not sure why exactly. Maybe I just didn’t get around to it or something, but I even kept my photo of the beer on my desktop screen this whole time. Ironically, I recently had it again, so what better opportunity to revisit the beer for my second beer review release for Andor: Season 2. Last week I reviewed – Admiral (J Henry Barrel Aged Grand Stout) by Delta Beer Lab – and so this week, we’ll taking a look at a much closer brewery – Rotunda Brewing Company with their Imperial Black IPA (or Imperial Cascadian IPA). This is one of my favorite styles of beer, I love Black IPAs, and Double Black IPAs are event better.

But before we dive in, I want everyone to please take a look at our stream / podcast / video we made on YouTube. It stars myself, Drew of Knights of Nostalgia, and Tim (Aglets). You can view it here:

In the video we cover the first three episodes of Andor. So please be sure to check it out!

And now, onto the review!

Chewbacca by Rotunda Brewing Company (at the Rising Sun in 2019)

The Beer Review: Chewbacca by Rotunda Brewing Company

Beer: Chewbacca
Brewery: Rotunda Brewing Company
Style: Imperial Black IPA / Double Black IPA
ABV: 8%
IBU: N / A
Untappd Description: (Blank)

Let’s check out this Wookie beast (not to be confused with the Wookie Monster by Fourscore). Will someone get this Walking Carpet out of my way so I can type!

Appearance

Chewbacca pours a deep, opaque brown-almost bordering on black-with a creamy, tan head that lingers like a loyal Wookiee companion. The lacing is impressive, clinging to the glass with each sip, leaving behind a trail reminiscent of hyperspace streaks.

Aroma

Right out of the gate, there’s a punch of roasted malt-think dark chocolate and fresh-brewed coffee-balanced by a piney, resinous hop profile. There’s a subtle undercurrent of caramel and a hint of citrus, like orange peel, that peeks through as it warms. The aroma is bold and inviting, promising complexity.

Chewbacca by Rotunda Brewing Company

Taste

The first sip delivers a satisfying interplay between roasted malt bitterness and assertive hop character. Notes of espresso and bittersweet cocoa dominate up front, quickly joined by pine, grapefruit, and a touch of earthy spice. The Black IPA style shines here: the hops never overwhelm the malt backbone, instead weaving together in a harmonious, chewy mouthfeel. The 9.2% ABV is well-hidden, but there’s a gentle warmth in the finish that lets you know this is a beer worthy of a Wookiee.

Mouthfeel

Medium to full-bodied, with a creamy carbonation that lifts the flavors without feeling heavy. The finish is dry, with lingering roast and a pleasant, resinous bitterness that invites another sip.

Overall Impressions

Chewbacca is a robust, well-executed Black IPA that balances dark roast and hop bite with finesse. It’s a bold tribute to its namesake-complex, powerful, and just a little wild. Whether you’re a Star Wars fan or simply a lover of big, hoppy dark ales, this is a beer that deserves a spot in your cantina. Untappd’s 3.8/5 rating feels right, but I’d nudge it a bit higher for the sheer fun and craftsmanship.

Wrap Up

My Untappd Rating: ****.25
Global Untappd Rating: 3.8 (out of nearly 1000 ratings) (as of 4.25.25)

May the hops be with you-always.

I’m gonna have to check the archives of the site here, or on my computer, to see if I have any notes or anything from the initial first time I drank the beer, if maybe I started a review and then sadly – for whatever reason – never got around to finishing it. Maybe I was waiting for the right chance to post it, and never found it. Who knows, there’s over 70+ articles in my “draft” folder here on the site, some day I’ll get around to posting them…. unfortunately that day is not today though. But be sure to come back to the site, who knows, maybe it’ll be tomorrow…..

And check back next Tuesday for another (hopefully) Star Wars themed beer release. Over the weekened is May the Fourth Be With You, so once again, hopefully I’ll be able to grab some of the RAR Star Wars themed beers and will be able to review them weekly!

Cheers all and thank you for reading!

Going back in time to the 90s in Mount Joy: The Fresh Brews of Mount Joy Brewfest https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/04/28/going-back-in-time-to-the-90s-in-mount-joy-the-fresh-brews-of-mount-joy-brewfest/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=going-back-in-time-to-the-90s-in-mount-joy-the-fresh-brews-of-mount-joy-brewfest Mon, 28 Apr 2025 20:32:39 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16252 Going back in time to the 90s in Mount Joy: The Fresh Brews of Mount Joy Brewfest

or – we took a trip to a brewfest and had a ‘kickin’ good time, one that was rad to the max!

Tasting cups from The Fresh Brews of Mount Joy brewfest

VIP Beerfest tickets –Check

Babysitter secured –Check

Uber ordered –Let’s Go!

We are ready to have a good time.  We made our way to the Fresh Brews of Mount Joy hosted by Yah Brew Hershey, Yah Brew Mount Joy and Voyage Mount Joy.  This was also part of a fundraiser with part of the proceeds benefiting “Donegal Athletic Club” which helps support the needs of our local athletes.

Like all things YAH Brew style, it hit heavy on the 90s nostalgia.  Even each brewery announcement on social media was doing a nostalgic reference to the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”  throwback.  And yes, I have had that song in my head while writing this entire article!

It was only the day of the event I took notice to the wear your best 90s themed attire.  I couldn’t think of anything that fit this goal so I went with my fav beer shirt.  My baby daddy luckily received a Homer Simpson T shirt for Christmas from a wonderful woman, so he wore that.

(See our article: The Fresh Brews of Mount Joy – Upcoming Brewfest on April 26th, 2025)

Even one of the gals pouring beer quizzed us.  “ I came to drop bombs. I got more rhymes than the bible’s got psalms” Who is the artist?  I can immediately guessed “biggie”.  I heard it in his voice when I repeated it in my head.  But I was very wrong…”House of Pain, Jump Around.”  So now that song is in your head, eh?

What got our attention to attend this event despite all the other events was the stellar lineup.

The brewery lineup for the Fresh Brews brewfest

After walking up and down the blocked off street the Beerfest looked like everyone was in a  hustle to get stuff setup but folks still taking time to chat and catch up.  I didn’t get the impression that everyone knew each other, although we ran into a lot of familiar faces, but everyone there was genuinely into the beer they were drinking. A large number of the breweries attending have done collab brews together.  It was like hanging out with all your beer friends while pretending the 90s weren’t more than 25 years together!

We had VIP tickets so that meant that VIP time was during the downpour.  I almost felt like I was playing frogger; jumping from tent to tent to get more beer pours at my quickest pace to avoid getting drenched.  But, let’s be honest, if you are giving me beer the rain doesn’t matter that much.

After the Facebook post and a friendly Beerfest goer we decided the bourbon barrel aged stout from Voodoo Brewing company was going to be our first taste of The Fresh Brews of Mount Joy.  Black Magick indeed lived up to hype.

If you have been reading The Beer Thrillers for any amount of time, I think you know by now we know how to get a Beerfest started.  This one comes in at a %13 ABV.  It gives that slight boozy flavor but then finishes off smoothly.  There is some definite magick  going on with this beer!

It wasn’t long until I needed some food to soak up the beer and our first Stop was Halo’s Eatery.  We split the Halo Bowl.  It was delicious and paired nicely with several of the beers we enjoyed.

It wasn’t long after I couldn’t stop drooling over the bacon on a stick I saw my other Beerfest goers enjoying.  We could hardly wait to chow down on the bacon and it was still very hot.  Again, many beers were enjoyed while enjoying Bacon on a stick.

The kicker to the whole event was the 90s cover band.  Every other person there would catch a few tunes and immediately start belting our lyrics that we could remember.

Before catching our Uber home we grabbed some Hoagies to go at Hulk Hoagies (the YAH Brewing attached hoagie shop that they run in Mount Joy), then went home to enjoy them on the coach.  We ordered Sweet Chin Music (spicy) and the Rock Bottom.

Fresh Brews Brewfest

Ben jumping in here. Just want to give a big shout out to Justin and everyone from YAH Brew for all the hard work they did. The brewfest was absolutely fantastic. Rain or no rain, it was a blast, and we got to hang out with lots of great people over the course of the day, and had some “da bomb” beers. Kudos to all involved for such a job well done!

Beer Review: Admiral (J Henry Barrel Aged Grand Stout) (Delta Beer Lab) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2025/04/22/beer-review-admiral-j-henry-barrel-aged-grand-stout-delta-beer-lab/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beer-review-admiral-j-henry-barrel-aged-grand-stout-delta-beer-lab Wed, 23 Apr 2025 02:45:10 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=16291 Beer Review: Admiral (J Henry Barrel Aged Grand Stout) (by Delta Beer Lab)

In honor of Andor season 2, (and the fast approaching May the Fourth Be With You), here is a new Star Wars (themed at least) beer review for everyone. Who has gotten to watch the first three episodes of Andor released today? (I did, and in the next beer review, I’ll post our YouTube review of it – involving myself, Knights of Nostalgia, and Aglets.)

Admiral (J Henry Barrel Aged Grand Stout) by Delta Beer Lab

Beer Review

Beer: Admiral (J. Henry Barrel Aged Grand Stout)
Brewery: Delta Beer Lab
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Style: American Imperial Stout (Barrel-Aged)
ABV: 11.1%

First Impressions

If you’re searching for a bold, barrel-aged imperial stout that delivers on both complexity and craftsmanship, Admiral (J Henry Barrel Aged Grand Stout) from Delta Beer Lab in Madison, WI, is a must-try. This limited release is making waves in the Midwest craft beer scene, earning an impressive 4.2/5 average rating on Untappd and a 4.42/5 on BeerAdvocate, signaling its strong reputation among stout enthusiasts.

Appearance

Admiral pours jet black with a dense, mocha-colored head that lingers and leaves elegant lacing down the glass. The viscosity is immediately apparent, hinting at the richness to come.

Aroma

The nose is decadent and layered. Expect waves of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and molasses, intertwined with notes of vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak from the J Henry bourbon barrels. Subtle hints of dried fruit and a whisper of bourbon heat round out the aroma, inviting you in for that first sip.

Admiral by Delta Beer Lab

Flavor

On the palate, Admiral is a masterclass in balance. The bourbon barrel aging imparts smooth vanilla and caramel undertones, seamlessly blending with the stout’s core flavors of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and dark toffee. There’s a gentle warmth from the 11.1% ABV – enough to remind you of its strength, but never overpowering. The barrel character is pronounced but not dominant, allowing the base stout’s roasty complexity to shine through. As the beer warms, notes of fig, raisin, and a touch of leather emerge, adding depth and intrigue.

Mouthfeel

Full-bodied and velvety, Admiral coats the palate with a creamy texture and moderate carbonation. The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering chocolate and a gentle bourbon warmth that invites another sip.

Overall Impressions

Admiral (J Henry Barrel Aged Grand Stout) is a standout example of a barrel-aged imperial stout done right. It’s robust, complex, and dangerously drinkable for its strength. We are working on a massive project here at The Beer Thrillers. We are creating a map of all of the breweries across the United States. State by state we are adding maps of all of the different states with every brewery in each state. (We will eventually get to the US Territories, as well as the Canadian Provinces, and possibly more countries; as well as doing some fun maps like a map of all the breweries we’ve been to, and other fun maps.) You can find the brewery maps here:

We are also working on a project of creating printable and downloadable PDFs and resources to be able to check and keep track of all of the breweries you’ve been to. So stay tuned for that project once we are finished with the Brewery Maps of the US States.
