I hope my mom knows she is my best friend and my best beer drinking friend! We could literally enjoy any beverage together and it would be a great time. Well, except rum, Grandma SueAnn can’t do rum anymore.

Ben recently joined me on a work trip and Grandma SueAnn was gracious enough to help out with Scarlet while we enjoyed a couple days away before the work trip. For taking on such a worthy task we, of course, brought her home a selection of beers from our trip.

We started off at RAR Brewing (see my article: May the Fourth Be With You – From a Non a Star Wars Lover at RAR Brewing’s Star Wars Fest), and made our way to Macklin Brewing in the evening. We thought of her often while perusing the crafts and art for sale amongst the street fair May the 4^th be with you but on the 3^rd. That street festival would have been Grandma SueAnn’s vibe. And then in the evening chilling at Macklin Brewery, a completely different tone than the street fair, while chatting with some other brewery goers would have fit her vibe just the same.

Saturday we visited Big Oyster Brewery, Misspillion River Brewing, First State Brewing Company, JAKL Beer Works and Crooked Hammock Brewery.

Before we left Big Oyster Brewery I knew we were grabbing a 4pack to go. We decided to grab Pillars of Dankness. It is a delicious IPA that comes in at 7% ABV and has a 3.92 rating on Untapped. Pillars of Dankness is as juicy as it is hazy. You are completely lost in the hazy IPA takeover but there is an over silky pillow like softness that slowly settles you down to get ready for the next sip.

Grandma SueAnn would have loved First State Brewing. I am not entirely sure if she would have played Exploding Kittens with us, but sipping that flight and munching on the poutine would have done the trick. We picked up a crowler of the Vibrant Beats from First State Brewing. We already knew we were indebted to Grandma SueAnn for helping with Scarlet so we knew this was one of the brews to take home. She is a lover of the Belgium tripels. It comes in at 10% ABV and has a 3.94 overall rating on Untapped. It is described as a “blend of Antique Beats (Barrel Aged Barleywine) and vibrant Thoughts (Barrel Aged Belgium Tripel with Peach). We split this crowler with her on our second night home and paired it pizza, chicken boli and chef salad. Vibrant Beats has just a hint of booziness but it quickly grabs your attention with a slight fruity flavor with some maltiness and finishes with a sweet honey taste. We definitely recommend Vibrant Beats and check out the First State Brewing Company. (See our Instagram post here.)

We ended our evening at Crooked Hammock. We walked in thinking this would be a snack and a flight. Our waitress was so excited about the food and beverage selections we found ourselves ordering a flight, the street corn fries and the Papa Pig Burger. Our waitress absolutely helped make the visit very exciting but the food was amazing We stuffed ourselves but still only ate half of the food. Leftovers are great so don’t worry, we polished those off. But the flight was awesome. We ended up going with the Banana Hammock in a 4pack to split with Grandma SueAnn, since we now have purchased more beer. This 15% ABV Belgian Quadrupel was not boozy tasting and felt very sneaky. We recommend trying this one AT home kids. This has a surprising 3.73% rating on untapped, I thought for sure it would have an average of 4.0 or higher. This one is sneaky and smooth at the same time. It is, as Josh would call it, a big damn beer #BDB It has a beautiful amber color and, of course, has some banana flavor to it. But more of a caramelized banana flavor that still has the spicy Belgian yeast behind it. I can’t wait to drink this one on a hammock

I know my mom would vibe any each and every one of these breweries with us! Visiting a brewery is meant to be a fun and comfortable visit. Some of our fav brewery visits together have been Sworn, Troegs, Boneshire Breworks, YAH Brew and Evergrain. Grandma SueAnn has gotten to visit several breweries now with us, her list is ever growing and we definitely want to get her to more, like Fourscore Beer Co, and more in the area!

Grandma SueAnn has been to Our Town Brewery, Boneshire Brew Works, YAH Brew, Troegs Independent Craft Brewing, Ever Grain Brewing, Sworn Brewing, Official BBQ and Brewing; and she has enjoyed them all. Can’t wait for more adventures with Grandma SueAnn at breweries!

We got to take SueAnn to Boneshire Brew Works while Scarlet was just little yet, she enjoyed a flight and had a wonderful time hanging out with us.

SueAnn came out with me for a work event (Alzheimer’s Association) at the Ever Grain Brewing. She is always so supportive… especially if there’s beer involved!

After the work event at Ever Grain, how could we pass up stopping over at Sworn Brewing? Grandma SueAnn had heard so much about it and wanted to get in on those fantastic IPAs!

Another work event brought Grandma SueAnn and I out to Lancaster. So of course…. Our Town is right there, and we had to get in on it. Grandma SueAnn decided to give the beers ‘bunny ears’ for my picture!

Drinking at Home

Grandma SueAnn loves to ‘get down’ with some beers at home. After work, we love popping over to Grandma’s, having a beer or two to relax while Scarlet runs about the room playing. Its a great way to unwind from the long day and get to catch up with mom, enjoy some shared beer, and maybe even a great dinner to boot. She is an amazing mother and is always so wonderful, loving, caring, and doing a fantastic job of raising Scarlet. As well as being an absolutely fabulous bonus mother to my older three girls. So I want to wish Amy an above and beyond, extraordinary Mother’s Day. And I want to extend that to my own mother, and to everyone else’s mothers who have played such a pivotal role in their lives. As well as to all the mothers out there reading this article. Happy Mother’s Day everyone! Boneshire Brew Works Celebrates 8th Anniversary

Boneshire Brew Works is Set to Celebrate Their 8th Anniversary

This weekend – Friday through Sunday – October 25th (Friday) until October 27th (Sunday) – Boneshire Brew Works is set to celebrate their 8th Anniversary! Located at 7462 Derry St, Harrisburg, PA 17111 in Rutherford (Harrisburg suburb), PA. (They also have a taproom at the SOMA in Harrisburg downtown as well.)

No details have been announced yet on their social media platforms, and for those who receive their newsletter all you received was the above picture – but – you can expect special one off beer releases, a special food menu, and an all around wonderful time at their brewery. So make sure to stop out and visit them and check out the brewery if its your first time or if its your five millionth time. It’ll be a great weekend!

Grilling and Beer’ing

A follow up to my column just the other day – but what is your favorite item to grill and beer to wash it down with?

Here are some recommended combinations!

Recommended Beers and and Grills

The go to grill favorites is the hamburger and the hot dog!

Gemballa by YAH Brew

Starting with the classic Hot dog you should stick to a lager or Hefe. These will balance nicely with the saltiness of a hot dog. We would recommend the Gemballa from YAH Brew. Their lager never disappoints. It comes in with a 4.6 ABV and goes down easily.

The second classic to pair with a Hamburger would be a pale ale or depending in spiciness at wit beer. Depending on the burger a richness in flavor will pair perfect with a lighter beer. Especially thinking you’ll be outside enjoying this delight. We are reaching for the Sunshine-N-Bananas by Sworn Brewing company. It is the perfect Hefeweizen. It is also refreshing on a hot day like today!

I am the kind of girl that likes to have cheese on her burger. Depending on the type of cheese you use you won’t be changing the palate all that much. You can stick with the same as the hamburger or try the Two Brewers American IPA by Lydian Stone Brewing Company.

Gordon Ramsay – STOP

I can’t help myself, but I need to grill some onions too. Now if you can get the onions to caramelize. God help me I feel like I am turning into Gordan Ramsey. Cheeseburger with grilled onions would rock with an amber lager. The malty sweetness can complement the caramelized onions perfectly. It would go perfectly with Sweater Weather by Liquid Noise Brewing company. This Brown ale was everything I hoped it would be and more. It comes in at a 5.5 ABV and also compliments those caramel coconut girl scout cookies well too!

And since we have grilled onions let’s pair a beer with a grilled sausage. (Or as Amy likes to call it – SAUSEEEEEEEEEEGE) (I pulled back from deciding on using a Ramsay Bolton sausage .gif here… I think we might all agree its best not to have that imagery in our heads.)

A sausage will pair with a dry pilsner. There are so many kinds of sausage but if you go with a regular Italian sausage a dry pilsner will bring out those Italian flavors. We would recommend a STICK HEAD PILS Pilsner by Boneshire Brew Works. I must warn you this pilsner is very crushable but at 5.5 ABV it isn’t too scary.

There is Something About Those Back Patio Beers

There is something about those out back patio beers. Wait, it’s too damn hot out today for that. We will be having this evening’s beer inside!

While I was pregnant with our daughter, Scarlet, Ben took his first crack at hardscaping a patio area off the back porch. I’ll spare you the details, but it was a long daunting process that quickly got out of hand. I mean, nothing goes as simply as you hope but, when it involves a large hole in the ground and 10 feet on concrete it gets crazy. No, this isn’t the start of a mob movie!

You can understand when Ben finally finished the original plans for the patio, we were very grateful. Even on humid evenings we have been grabbing some patio time with a beer since early in the year. The little spot that was created to find peace and relaxation needs a beer to go with it.

The latest brews we have enjoyed together are Idiom Brewing out of the Blue on July 1, Heavy Seas Hazy Cannon and Tropicannon on July 1 , Idiom Brewing Emotional Rollercoaster July 4^th, Last Thursday 11^th Schnitz Ale Brewery Boozendorf ale.

Each time it feels like a major relief to relax outside with a well-crafted beer and finish out the day. Especially being able to chat and vent about a stressful day with a friend or the love of your life. The patio beer also counts if you are alone though. This is the beer that when you finish you feel refreshed. Given the time of year patio beers are normally fruity or light.

No matter where you live or frequently hang out, grab yourself a “patio beer”, preferably from a local craft brewery and relax!

This wasn’t our patio but we did have beers in a “patio” at Boneshire this past Friday (The Beer Thrillers at Boneshire Brew Works – Instagram).

Ben had the AuZealand and I had the Flying Hawaiian. And yes, we had these in the parking lot picnic table area. It still counts as part of the patio beer discussion. This isn’t like Cheers but each brewery we tend to write about should make you feel like you belong. Like it’s your 3rd home.

We also enjoyed a patio beer at YAH Brew Kolsch for CJ June 30^th (Benefit for CJ) (The Beer Thrillers at YAH Brew – Instagram). It’s a small patio outside of Yah Brew but it continues that vibe of feeling welcome at the neighborhood watering hole.

Some of our other fav patio spots to have a beer: Sworn Brewing, Cold Spring Brewing Company , Wolf Brewing, Boneshire Brew Works, Ever Grain Brewing’s open patio area, Troegs Brewery’s patio and beer garden; and honestly there’s so many more – too many to even begin to list really! Long Tongue Liar by Boneshire Brew Works

It was time to sit down and have a beer with Grandma SueAnn. I have spent so many recent weekends testing my limits of caffeine to work a part time job and it’s time to unwind. Reaching for a Belgium Tripel just feels right.

As soon as it was bottled we picked up some Long Tongue Liar from Boneshire Brew Works. This tasty Belgian comes in at a 9.6% ABV according to Untapped. It is described on Untapped as “OH, what a wicked tale you weave.’ So immediately Grandma SueAnn and I are excited.

The Facebook announcement states: The Liar has returned! Finally after several years Long Tongue Liar will be available on draft (tomorrow) and in bottles (Thursday). This beautiful Belgian beer is brewed with Belgian Candi Sugar, Honey, and our favorite Belgian yeast and clocks in at 10%. Its not for the faint of heart, drink too many of these and you might turn into a Liar!”

This is very tasty. I’ll assume Grandma SueAnn thought the same since the first pour from the bomber bottle was gone in a couple minutes. We both agreed this was a tasty treat; It has a silkiness to it that dances over your tongue. We shared a salmon salad and we picked up on some buttery-ness that we attributed to the fish.

Skip to a few hours later and I’m home making dinner. I’m sneaking some spinach into some homemade beef/turkey enchiladas and I’m thinking of cracking open the second bottle of LTL. It has a slight boozy taste to it but the honey flavor shows up to compete.

In previous years it was aged in California Chardonnay barrel with Pennsylvania cherries and Brettanomyces Lambicus.

If I took a guess I’d say it was aged in Chardonnay barrels again. That oaky taste is apparent and contrary to most dry chardonnay this one is one I’d like to sip on all night long. I have to say by the second one, I am indeed a Long Tongue Liar.

This is one of my favorite IPAs and why I lead off with this one. Its a year round flagship at Boneshire Brew Works, and it is absolutely delicious. If you get the chance to stop in at either of their locations, you have to try it.

When we make our annual pilgrimage to the hop-growing hotbed of Yakima Valley, we’re like kids in a candy store. We eyeball the hops on the lines, crush them in our hands and rub them til their oil fill the air. LolliHop brings together three of our favorites. Dry-hopping with Citra and Mosaic layers in notes of orange, grapefruit, and melon, while Azacca in the kettle adds hints of papaya and pineapple. Locally harvested rustic pale malt provides the backbone, and wheat and oats make this beer silky smooth with a touch of haze.

A fan favorite this time of year here in Central PA. Living five minutes from the brewery certainly has its perks. This is one of Drew (of Knights of Nostalgia)’s favorites from Troegs, and his favorites in general. Personally I can’t wait for Nimble Giant season which will be right around the corner.

Silent Disco by Funk Brewing

Style: IPA – New England / Hazy

This is a fun New England IPA. It might not be their most notable, but its certainly one of their stellar flagship IPAs. They have many other IPAs that are very good as well like Citrus IPA, Double Citrus IPA, Pipe Dream, and Prop, and even a Double Disco. We have previously reviewed their seasonal IPA – Royal Rumble. (As well as another beer from them – Griddle.)

Broken Heels by New Trail Brewing Company

A Hazy IPA hopped intrepidly with hand-selected Citra and Mosaic, leading to High Aromatics of luminous Citrus, rich Conifer, and refreshing Tropicals. This beer packs a full mouthfeel with low bitterness that is soft on the palette. Broken Heels is available all day everyday, and reminds us that no adventure is without its risks.

Albeit this is a little bit north of Central PA (Harrisburg wise), but its everywhere here. Sheetz, WaWa’s, Rutters, you name it, you can find it in their beer coolers. While I do love hammering some of the tall boys of these, I do typically prefer the Double Broken Heels, a good four pack of the Double Broken Heels will have you feeling all kinds of good.

We did review this previously here: Beer Review: Broken Heels. Here’s a brief quick excerpt:

This is like drinking hoppy juicy dank orange juice. It is so full of citrus fruit juicy hop taste and is just so easy to drink. You get a flourish of hop notes as soon as you start sipping, you get citrus, you get the tropical fruits, you get practically no bitterness, you just get a smooth drink. The pilsner malts and the flaked oats gives this a really smooth and tasty brew and just makes it like a wonderful NEIPA that drinks easy. After one sip of this you can quickly see why New Trails Brewing Co. is known for their outstanding IPAs.
Beer Review: Broken Heels (New Trail Brewing Co.)

We have reviewed a few other New Trail Beers in the past, and I know I can sometimes get a bit cynical of their IPAs tasting the same, but at the end of the day, their IPAs are absolutely wonderful even if they are all very similar. (You can find our review of Icicle here – Beer Review: Icicle.)

Annville iPA by Rotunda Brewing Company

Style: IPA – New England / Hazy
ABV: 7.8%

My Untappd Rating: 4.00

This is the highest IBU on the list. But thats nothing to hold against this (or to prop it up either I suppose). No Central PA IPA list would be complete without this wonderful IPA on it (so, it might be five on my list, but its not the least, or the last, this list is in no order). This is a delicious, juicy IPA, very tasty, and you can find it at Rotunda Brewing Company’s main brewery in Annville, or their brewpub in Hershey, or at a lot of different bars in the Hershey, Harrisburg, Hummelstown, Palmyra, Annville, Lebanon area.

We’ve reviewed a couple from them, such as: Juicy Fruit sWheat Tart, Irish Car Bomb Nitro Stout, Chewbacca, and Mango Guyabano sWheat Tart. Please check them out.

Its time for everyone’s favorite annual ‘oinking good time’ – thats right, its Pigtoberfest time again! Once again its getting to be fall time and that means Oktoberfests everywhere, and at Boneshire Brew Works – that means Pigtoberfest.

The annual Pigtoberfest is always a fun event at Boneshire Brew Works with live music, great beers, a stein holding contest, and much more. And this year’s Pigtoberfest will be no exception!

Annual Pigtoberfest Beer

Each year at this time Boneshire Brew Works also releases their annual Pigtoberfest Beer. You can read our review of it here: Beer Review: Pigtoberfest (Boneshire Brew Works).

Its an extremely delicious Festbier and certainly one of my favorites of the style; especially in the local area. If you are able to get it – and not just on the 1st (during the Pigtoberfest) – be sure to stop in and try it, you won’t be disappointed a tall, I can guarantee that.

Hurricane Ian

Well, this section is an update (edited and updated on September 30th at 6 – 7AM). With Hurricane Ian this changes things a little, but the event will go on – Rain or Shine. Music will still be there, stein holding will still happen, and there will still be wonderful beers flowing and food to eat. So be sure not to miss this just due to a few sprinkles (…or torrential rainfall… either / or). The event will still go on and be just as much fun if its inside or outside have no fears of that.

Saturday the 1st is going to be a busy day for us here at The Beer Thrillers. First off in the morning Amy and I will be volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End ALZ in Harrisburg (on City Island), then we’ll be stopping at the Polish / Slavic Fest (piroegies!) and then following that going to the Pigtoberfest. So look for us there probably around 1:30 to 2PM ish… I am guessing here, time becomes fluid once we start hitting up events. Hopefully Hurricane Ian will hold out and not turn everything into a wash fest, but we’ll see.

(Edit: Hurricane Ian is going to be definitely playing a part, and will most likely be raining all day tomorrow – Saturday. We’ll see how this changes our plans. (And don’t let the Breweries in PA banner with all the Oktoberfest Events mislead you… there is certainly a Pigtoberfest / Oktoberfest event going on at Boneshire Brew Works this weekend. They have several other breweries listed and shown on their image graphic / banner, but for some reason they don’t have Boneshire’s. They have Wolf’s listed, they have Pilger Ruh’s listed, Sly Fox’s, Wyndridge’s, Lost Tavern’s, and a few other’s listed, but they don’t have Boneshire Brew Works’s listed. They seem to give Boneshire Brew Works a bit of the short thrift it seems at times, but have no fear, we’ll cover them, and we’ll keep you updated. Happy Mothers Day

Lets first start this off with doing a big shout out to all the mothers out there. We wouldn’t be here without them. (Quite literally.) So we here at The Beer Thrillers acknowledge and congratulate all the mothers – we know its not easy. (Ask my mom, she would gladly tell you horror stories of raising…. not me of course, my sister. I was an angel. Perfect child. Clearly the favorite. My sister on the other hand…. *shivers*.)

Every year around this time my grandmother’s peony bush blooms out front. So I cut off some of the flowers, and cut off some similar flowers (this year I cut a few branches of the dogwood and some azalea flowers) and took them out to grammy’s grave. Peonies bloom around early – middle of May and don’t last super long, but have wonderful beautiful flowers and a great aroma. You can read more on them here at Wikipedia: Peony. (Quick fun fact: The peony is named after Paeon [also spelled Paean], a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. In Greek mythology, when Asclepius became jealous of his pupil, Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower.)

Yesterday we celebrated Mothers Day at my parents house and I brought my girls over. As per tradition whenever we all get together, we typically play some form of board game or card game. The girls love Organ Attack so we played that with my mom.

Organ Attack was created by the writer of The Awkward Yeti, Nick Seluk. I reviewed one of his comic books here: Book Review: The Heart and Brain (The Awkard Yeti) (by Nick Seluk). The card game is fun, and gets my daughters all in a fiery mood fighting each other to remove and eliminate their organs. It is a fun game, that does help the girls learn a little bit about anatomy (like what diseases target what organs, what the organs do, etc.). There is some awkward moments though, like giving my mom cancer – something that she has survived three different forms. But in true champion and warrior form, we turn it all into jokes and my mom laughs, especially when she got to play the Medicine card on it and remove it. She even joked that it was easier than chemotherapy again.

All in all, mothers day was a lot of fun (well technically Mothers Day Eve, but it was our mothers day). Can’t beat a day spent with family, playing games, delivering flowers, little things like this in life is what’s nice. Like Kurt Vonnegut would say quoting his uncle (Bernard Vonnegut): “If this isn’t nice, what is?”

Anyone familiar with the blog knows that Boneshire Brew Works is my local go to brewery. Its about four minutes from home and all but within walking distance. (Rubber Soul is another, also within walking distance.) Needless to say we have covered many beer reviews by them: Sunburst, Pigtoberfest, Dillston, Harrishire, Fall Hippo, Blue Hippo, AuZealand 2.0, Tried and True (Mango), Caucus Race 6.0, The Hog, Long Tongue Liar, Pandemic Pils , Iscariot, Road Less Traveled, Good Walk Spoiled, S’Mores, LazaRIS, and reviewed the flight of Shire variants; we’ve also covered them in various news articles: Boneshire Brew Works Celebrates 5th Anniversary, Pigtoberfest 2021, Boneshire Brew Works Expands With Second Location, Boneshire Brew Works Celebrates 3 Years, Brewery Hopping – 12.27.19, and Breweries around Harrisburg Area (2019).

Soooo….. yea….. I would say we’ve covered quite a few of their brews here on the blog.

And all for good reason – they make some really wonderful beers. Grace (this beer) included. So when I heard they were releasing a special barrel aged beer – and that it was named Grace – I couldn’t slap my money down fast enough for this beaut. It was first released for sale for us mug club members, and then went on sale to the public after that. It was 20$ for the bottle.

From Untappd – Boneshire Brew Works is a microbrewery from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. They have 189 unique beers. They have 41,401 ratings with a global average rating of 3.84 (as of 5.8.22). Their Untappd description reads: “Welcome to Boneshire Brew Works. We are located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on Derry Street. Soon you will be able to have our beer and sodas throughout Central Pennsylvania, as they are already flowing in our tasting room. Follow us for updates on beer releases, events, and brewery happenings through your favorite social media site.”

Grace by Boneshire Brew Works

Style: Wild Ale – American
ABV: 7.5% / 6%
IBU: No IBU
Untappd Description: We brewed this beer several years ago and put it to sleep in American Chardonnay barrels with 2 strains of Brettanomyces. This beer is very complex with orange marmalade, subtle coriander spice, dry oakiness, heavy Brett funk and slight sourness.

This is a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful beer. Lovely in appearance, aroma, taste, everything, it just nails it. As per always with my beer reviews, I do it in the order of – appearance, aroma, taste. (Or at least I try to remember to do it that way. No guarantees.) [But have no fears, for this review I am.]

Starting off with the appearance – like I said, its beautiful. Its got a light reddish golden like hue. It has a very striking resemblance to some wines of the lighter scale. its fluorescent in a way, and completely clear. No sediment, no floaties, no deposits. Nice carbonation, slight small head that retains for a fair bit.

Aroma is an interesting mix of wine, Belgian, saison, and a mixture of other notes. Notes of the coriander spice, the grape, the oak, and lots of the chardonnay, gives off the heavy wine like impressions, but the coriander spice and the Brett aroma also gives off strong Belgian and Wilde Ale / Saison impressions as well; making this a wonderfully complex beer.

This is a deliciously tart, mildly puckering, wine like beer, designed for a classier age (not like those blasters they use in uncivilized times). It is a gorgeous looking beer, looks very wine like, and has just a wonderful appearance straight from the bottle to the glass, and undoing wax sealed bottles is always fun. (Really, there’s gotta be an easy way to unseal waxed and sealed bottles, but I haven’t found it yet.) The carbonation on this was nice, and the overall appearance is a medley of wine and Belgian styles, so I dig that. The bottle says its 6% ABV, but the Untappd listing for it says its 7.5%. This has a very complex overall taste to it. Its got a lot of wine attributes and tastes; you get a heavy dosage of oak, grape, Brett, funk, tart, with a dryness, and then you get some subtle notes of coriander spice, orange and orange marmalade, The tartness and dryness to the beer really holds it up well and keeps the medley of different flavors in a very nice sipping beer; this is a perfect dinner beer to share with someone over a nice course meal. This isn’t mean to be a sessionable or poundable beer that you have with your buddies while watching the Phillies blow another game or something similar, this is meant to be a lovely dinner beer, with candlelight, nice music, steak, mashed potatoes, garlic green beans, etc. Thats what makes it so enjoyable too, knowing the work and craftsmanship that went into this beer, making it such a delicious, well rounded beer, adds to the overall enjoyment of the beer itself; knowing that it was worked on hard, that it was barrel aged, that time was spent on this beer, all adds to its overall quality and flavor. Its the small enjoyable things like this – knowing that someone cares about their work and craft – that makes the moments and beer like this so much better. All in all, the flavors work so well, the aroma is lovely, the appearance of the beer is wonderful, and everything about this beer is just great.

Grandma’s and Mothers

Its so nice to get to celebrate Mothers Day and thank my mom for all she has done for me, for my girls, for my sister, and as a teacher all she has done for everyone else. My Grandma (Grammy) Grace was just as much a mother figure helping raise me as I grew up, and so was my Great Grandma – Florence Speck. All three of these women are / and were – such tough as nails ladies, who never gave up. My great grandma passed away at 99, after a long fight of dementia and alzheimers, my mom has survived several fights against cancer.

Its a nice nod to my Grammy that I got to do a beer review with a beer with her name. I think she would have been tickled pink by that. I got to do one for my Great Grandma as well – Florence by Hill Farmstead. I know she would have laughed about that, she loved stealing my dad’s beers when he still lived at home with them and going to college.

So let me just say one last time – Happy Mothers Day to all the moms out there who are doing such a wonderful job.

Fall Season

It is certainly that time of year… fall; and you can feel it in the crisp and cool air. And that means this time in the Hippo series, it needs to take a ‘fall’ turn and change, going from blue to red to pink to… fall. While maybe not a color like the others, fall is definitely a feeling, and works well for the series’ evolution.

Mug Club

As you can see, my beer in question here is in a mug rather than a normal glass or anything. Sunday (Halloween Day, October 31st), me and a friend stopped in around noon to enjoy their 5th Anniversary ‘Shire’ Pastry Flight (you can read that here: Multiple Beer Reviews – Shire Pastries) and also get to try the new Fall Hippo. And lets just say, we enjoyed all five new beers.

The mug club is such a good deal if your a regular. Most breweries have them, and their typically relatively the same across the breweries with some different perks and add-ons and bonuses. One of my favorite perks is that the mug is 20oz rather than the normal 16oz, so all of your beers you get are 20oz pours rather than 16oz pours. Thats a big perk in my opinion, especially when you go often enough.

(Only downside is taking pictures for the blog, without the clear glass, but the overhead view is still good, and you still get an idea of the beer anyway.)

Beer Review

Fall Hippo by Boneshire Brew Works

Untappd Description: Next up in our Hippo Series, Fall Hippo. Brewed with Cranberry, Pie Spices, and Lactose. Fall desert in a glass.

Aroma is pretty on point with the description, and is certainly a fall desert in a glass aromatically. You get the cranberry and pie spices right up in those nostril canals when you lean in for a good whiff. Its not quite “pie on the window sill cooling” strong, but the notes are all present and you can smell them.

Appearance is hard to tell from the picture (but you can check Untappd for numerous other pictures here – Untappd: Fall Hippo). But, overall, it has a lovely pinkish, off cranberry coloring to it. Like a lighter, more diffused cranberry, maybe a cranberry mixed with water and other juices or similar. (Note: I am not saying its watered down, just trying to give an apt description of the appearance.)

Taste is lovely for this fine beer. Very enjoyable. This is a completely comfortable, ‘kill a four pack in one sitting’ smooth, easy beer. This is a wonderful all day sipper, you can crush a four pack (or more!) of these, and have no problems. Its not too tart to give you acid reflux or anything, and its not too heavy ABV that it’ll get your head swimming. You get a notable cranberry tartness to it, but its not too much, not too overpowering, or lip-puckering or anything like that. And its not too tart or acidic that it’ll you acid reflux or anything like that either. You can pick up the pie spice notes, that gives it this little extra ‘kick’ to it. There is a slick, smooth, slightly creamy feel and taste to it (feel moreso, taste is subtle) which is from the addition of the lactose (or I might be overreaching and thinking thats what its from). Its a very well balanced beer, nothing is overpowering or too much, everything is pretty much good accordance with each other. The mouthfeel is on point. There’s no slickness or cloying to it. It just tastes nice and smooth and light. Its also easy on the head with the ABV, though the lactose might make it not so easy on stomachs. All in all, this is just a smooth, easy drinking beer, that you could sit around the fire with, or sit around all day watching some football games (or early morning futbol games) and be fine at the end of the day, so thats just a win all around right there.

Flight of Shire Stouts at Boneshire Brew Works

5th Anniversary Celebration

This past weekend marked the 5th Anniversary for Boneshire Brew Works. All weekend they had a big ‘bash’ of a celebration, from Friday – October 29th, through Sunday – October 31st. I got to stop out for a lunchtime visit on Sunday, and got to try out the brand new stout series – “Shire Stouts” by Alan (head brewer of Boneshire Brew Works). I also got to try the Caucus Race 10 and the Fall Hippo (shown above in my Mug Club 2021 Mug).

International Stout Day

Today is International Stout Day; so what better day to post my review of this delicious tasty flight of stouts? You can actually read about International Stout Day here – at StoutDay.com: International Stout Day. There’s a lot of information on the site, but here’s a quick blurb from the ‘About’ section:

The Shire Flight

Ok, lets get into it, but first, a quick word about the flight. This is a new stout series at Boneshire Brew Works. Its not variants of LazaRIS which Alan has done in the past, this is a new stout with various variants of it to start off with. This flight consisted of French Toast, cinnamon bun, hazelnut, and coconut.

Ok, onto the reviews:

French Toast Shire

Beer: French Toast Shire

Right off the bat, hit the ground running hard on this one. Huge maple aroma and french toast deliciousness from the first whiff. This smells like a snow day Tuesday morning with mom off work, and your school closed, and mom’s in the kitchen making breakfast.

Appearance is going to be pretty similar with all of the beers in this flight. The head / foam of each beer might look slightly different, but for the most part, each beer has the same appearance. (And given that each is a variant of the other, thats how it should be.) These are standard looking stouts; Razor Ramon hair black, like a black maw, something that Nietzsche would tell you to avoid looking at.

First sip is straight up tasteeeeeeeeeeeeeeey! Its like drinking liquid french toast. Very heavy maple flavors, subtle bread and sugar, lovely backburner of a stout behind it all. Full bodied, there’s a lot to love about this beer. Its a light but tasting heavy stout, nothing disadvantageous about that. Nothing cloying, nothing off flavored, nothing that sticks out as being unnatural or unwanted in the beer. You are getting all the flavors you should want, and all the flavors that are intended in a ‘french toast stout’. This is exactly as it should be. This might be my favorite of the flight (and I’m saying that post – having all of them; not just saying that right at the onset). I will definitely be needing to come back and give this a full mug try and get to really delve deep and enjoy this bad boy.

Cinnamon Bun Shire

Aroma for this bad boy is very heavy cinnamon. You can smell the cinnamon bun big time on this one. Right out the gate you get a nose of cinnamon followed by some bready and then the stout underlaying it all. This is certainly a very aromatic series of stouts – which they should be and is one of the great thing about stouts, aromatics work so well with them, and you get such a strong array of smells and aromas with them.

Just like the above stout, this looks like the abyss (didn’t Nietzsche warn us about them?), and it definitely stared back. This one had a bit more of a head to it than the French Toast one (a small slim foam crest to it). All in all it looks like a good healthy stout.

This one comes at you strong, fast, and heavy with the first sip. A blast of cinnamon right up front. A bit overpowering it, it wallops you right away. It doesn’t give as much of a bread or bready taste as I was looking for, or even a bit of a glaze / sugary taste that I expected (the bun and glazing of ‘said’ cinnamon bun). Still overall, its certainly a wonderful stout; just a bit overpowering on the cinnamon. So if you don’t mind cinnamon (or even better yet – if you really like cinnamon) then this is definitely up your alley. This isn’t really to take anything away from this stout, its definitely really good, just a bit strong on the cinnamon.

Hazelnut Shire

Beer: Hazelnut Shire

Aroma for this smells like a typical stout, with a hazelnut added bonus. This might be the least aromatic of the four, but still very aromatic. That was the fun thing about this flight, you could put all four in front of someone blind, and let them take a whiff, and they could easily tell which was which.

This one looks a lot creamier (and oh yea, its definitely a lot creamier than the others). It has just a shinier, creamier look to the beer, almost as if it were a nitro. It also has a little brown ring of foam head (more tan than pure white) with small little bubbles. Still stout typical – Razor Ramon hair black.

As if with appearance, this is a very creamy beer. A nice smooth, creamy stout. This is one of the chief things about hazelnut in stouts (or hazelnut stouts, or however that should be phrased), it just gives the beer a kind of nice, creamy, near nitro like taste, appearance, and flavor to it. Hazelnut, Coconut (as we will see in the next beer), and chocolate tend to be very popular additions to stouts, and all three flavors tend to stick well with the body of the beer to create a lovely flavorful beer. This is certainly proof of that. This is a nice, tasty, delicious stout, that has the wonderful body feel and taste of a stout, with the nice creaminess of the hazelnut, and hazelnut flavors, and overall just a fantastic beer on par with the other two of this series.

Coconut Shire

Another ‘nut’ stout…. except its not! Oh, coconut, you imposter, you fake out. Like the others, you get a lovely coconut smell right out of the gate on this aromatic stout. Coconut can be a wonderful smell and it always seems to work so well with stouts; I think the heavy body of the stout gives it a great body to add ontop of with the aroma and flavors of coconut. I’m typically not a fan of coconut outside of stout based beers (coconut candies, milk, etc, all taste horrible to me).

Appearance is just as we’ve been describing with the above beers – basically this entire flight. Razor Ramon hair black; the abyss that Nietzsche warned us black; stout black. Jet engine fuel black. Etc. etc. etc.

The last of the flight, and it doesn’t disappoint. (None of the flight did, not a single bad beer in the batch.) The coconut is a bit more subtle in flavor than it is in aroma on this. Out of all four of the flight, this one gives you the better true taste of the base stout underneath the variants. You still get the coconut in it; it’s just a bit more muted and subtle than the variants in the other stouts (especially the cinnamon in the cinnamon bun stout). I like that with this one, letting you get a good strong stout, with the coconut flavor, rather than a strong flavor with a pinch of stout. This all works into a really good stout. Just as with the others, there’s nothing cloying, nothing unnatural, no off flavors or anything bad with this. A wonderful mouth feel, a nice clean stout and coconut taste, and a good finish, no lingering taste or aftertaste, and nothing to detract from the beer itself.

Overall

Overall this was a downright delicious flight. (The Fall Hippo and Caucus Race 10 I had with them were also very good.) As of last checking Boneshire Brew Work’s (Derry Street location) menu list on Untappd, all of these beers are still on, so if you haven’t had them yet, you can still get in and check them out. (I last checked the menu list last night at around 10PM – 11.3.21 – so things might have changed since.)

I would highly recommend all four, either as a flight to try and taste them all out, or if there’s a particular flavor you really wanna try, grab a pint of it. This was a fun flight and added a great new list of beers for the 5th Anniversary Celebration. Hopefully we’ll see more of the ‘Shire’ Stout series in the future.
