The Evolution of German Brewing and Beer Culture

Germany’s beer culture is renowned worldwide. Grounded in centuries of tradition, it has significantly impacted how beer is perceived, produced, and enjoyed globally. From medieval monks mastering brewing methods to the contemporary surge of independent craft brewers, German beer culture has adapted while maintaining its authenticity. Its brewing heritage profoundly influences the global craft beer scene, motivating brewers from the U.S. to Japan to recreate styles such as Dunkel and Hefeweizen.

A standout feature of German beer culture is its strong ties to community, festivals, and tradition. The vibrant ambiance found in the finest beer gardens and the cherished Festzelt Tradition during Oktoberfest demonstrate how Germany continues to exemplify beer appreciation.

Medieval Origins: The Monks and the Reinheitsgebot

German brewing has roots that stretch back over a millennium, with monasteries playing a pivotal role in refining beer production. Monks brewed beer not only for sustenance but also as a source of income. This era witnessed the rise of early beer styles, including the darker, malt- centric Dunkel. The combination of local ingredients and controlled fermentation techniques established the unique character of German beer.

In 1516, the Bavarian Duke Wilhelm IV enacted the Reinheitsgebot, or Beer Purity Law, which restricted beer ingredients to water, barley, and hops (yeast was added later once its role in fermentation was clarified). This legislation guaranteed quality and set a benchmark for clean, carefully crafted beers that continue to represent German brewing standards.

The Rise of Beer Gardens and Community Drinking

Beer gardens are an integral part of German culture. Originating in the 19th century, they were initially created in Bavaria, where breweries stored beer in underground cellars to keep it cool. Trees were planted above these cellars for shade, and soon tables and benches transformed these areas into communal spaces.

Today, the best beer gardens offer much more than just excellent beer—they create an experience. Families and friends share time in these open-air venues, relishing traditional foods like pretzels and bratwurst alongside classic German brews. The convivial atmosphere fosters camaraderie, a fundamental aspect of German beer culture that has inspired craft breweries around the world. Many contemporary craft beer taprooms aim to capture this welcoming, communal spirit.

Oktoberfest and the Festzelt Tradition

Any examination of German beer culture would be incomplete without acknowledging Oktoberfest. This iconic festival, which commenced in 1810 to celebrate a royal wedding, has evolved into a worldwide celebration. Central to Oktoberfest is the Festzelt Tradition, where enormous tents, or “Festzelte,” welcome throngs of beer enthusiasts. Each tent offers a distinct ambiance, ranging from energetic party atmospheres to traditional Bavarian settings filled with folk music and hearty meals.

German breweries craft special Oktoberfest beers—often Märzen or Festbier styles—that boast a richer, maltier profile compared to standard lagers. These unique brews have prompted numerous craft breweries worldwide to develop their own Oktoberfest offerings, preserving the festival’s spirit well beyond Munich.

The Global Influence of German Beer Styles

As the craft beer movement has grown, brewers globally have taken cues from German beer styles. Some of the most notable include:

  • Dunkel – This dark, malty lager, featuring caramel and toasty notes, has inspired a fresh wave of brewers to explore malt-forward styles.
  • Pilsner – Initially crafted in the Czech Republic but perfected by German brewers, this crisp, golden lager has surged to global popularity.
  • Weissbier (Hefeweizen) – Recognized for its hazy look and banana-clove aroma, this wheat beer has impacted American wheat ales and hazy IPAs.
  • Bock and Doppelbock – Known for their strength, smoothness, and rich malt profile, these beers set a high standard for winter warmers and high-ABV lagers.

Craft brewers in the United States, in particular, have embraced these styles, adding their unique twist. Many American breweries showcase their interpretations of German classics, all while honoring the brewing principles that make these beers exceptional.

Lederhosen and the Cultural Experience of German Beer

In Germany, beer transcends being just a beverage—it’s a celebration of heritage and identity. Traditional attire such as Lederhosen plays a vital role in beer festivals and gatherings, particularly in Bavaria. Wearing Lederhosen at Oktoberfest or a local beer celebration reflects respect for tradition and immerses individuals in the experience.

Those wishing to embrace a genuine Bavarian style find high-quality Lederhosen indispensable. Whether attending Oktoberfest in Munich or a German beer festival abroad, dressing appropriately enhances the cultural connection.

The Future of German Beer Culture in Craft Brewing

The traditions of German beer continue to shape the modern craft brewing landscape, as brewers globally respect and innovate on classic styles. From exciting beer gardens emerging in cities around the world to small-batch Dunkel lagers crafted by independent breweries, the essence of German brewing is flourishing in new and intriguing ways.

While some craft brewers are testing bold flavors and modern techniques, many still turn to the Reinheitsgebot as a foundation for quality brewing. The dedication to craftsmanship, tradition, and community remains at the core of both German beer culture and the worldwide craft beer movement.

LAKEFRONT SUPPORTS SUICIDE PREVENTION WITH A BEER AND AN EVENT

Lakefront Brewery has brewed its “Save A Weiss” beer once again to help raise awareness of National Suicide Prevention Week, which begins Sunday, Sept. 8th.

Lakefront Brewery is teaming up, once again, with a nationwide coalition of brewers for a suicide prevention awareness initiative inspired by O.H.S.O Brewing in Phoenix, Arizona. O.H.S.O owner, Jon Lane, had lost family and friends to suicide, and even had ideations himself. He credits the stranger he spoke to after dialing 988 for saving his life. In July of 2020, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) formally designated 988 as a nationwide 3-digit lifeline for mental health crisis and suicide prevention services. Lakefront hopes their “Save A Weiss” beer will raise awareness of the help out there, and with 988, there’s always a listening ear available.

“Our efforts last year meant so much to us, we wanted to repeat helping this very important cause,” said Lakefront Brewery President, Russ Klisch. “Please, come on down, have a beer, and maybe learn a little about suicide prevention.”

With the start of National Suicide Prevention Week on Sunday, September 8th, Lakefront will be donating $1 of every pint sold of the German-style Wheat Ale, Save A Weiss, to the AFSP Wisconsin chapter. The AFSP organization is focused on eliminating the loss of life from suicide by delivering innovative prevention programs, educating the public, raising funds for suicide research, and reaching out to those who have lost someone to suicide. Grab a pint all week long through Sunday, September 14th.

Help us and all the other collaborating breweries spread the word about the 988 suicide prevention line. It could literally save a life. Learn more about the 988 lifeline by clicking here.

*The Save A Weiss Wheat Ale will be on tap starting Thursday, September 5th, and the $1 donations will also begin that day.

At 6pm tonight, Lakefront is partnering with the Wisconsin AFSP to host a “Talk Saves Lives” Happy Hour at their Beer Hall. “Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention” is a community-based presentation that covers the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention, and what people can do to fight suicide. Free registration is preferred, but not required: https://tsllfbwi.attendease.com/  Anyone 21+ may join.

LAKEFRONT BREWERY WELCOMES PUPPIES TO THEIR PATIO FOR A JR’S PUPS-N-STUFF SUPPLY DRIVE

LAKEFRONT BREWERY WELCOMES PUPPIES TO THEIR PATIO FOR A JR’S PUPS-N-STUFF SUPPLY DRIVE

Lakefront is partnering with local volunteer/foster-based Wauwatosa dog rescue to gather much needed supplies for their mission.

“When we launched our Ripple Effect donation program last year, we asked our staff what organizations they would like to partner with in the community, which put JR’s Pups-N-Stuff on the top of our list from the beginning” says Lakefront’s Donation Coordinator Liz Mauritz. Lakefront is thrilled to be hosting a puppy supply drive on Lakefront’s patio this Sunday, September 8th from 11am to 4pm.

“There will definitely be adoptable dogs and maybe even some kittens,” added Mauritz.

JR’s Pups-N-Stuff is a nonprofit volunteer/foster-based dog rescue located in Salem Lakes and Wauwatosa. Their rescue was built by a network of foster parents who do not discriminate because of breed, age, or health status. Over the 15 years that they’ve operated, north of 10,000 dogs have found forever homes. This Sunday, they will be collecting much-needed supplies to continue their mission of saving animal lives.

To see a list of items that will make a significant impact for JR’s, visit Lakefront’s website HERE. Bring those items down to Lakefront on Sunday and donate directly to representatives from the organization. Those who donate new or gently used supplies will receive a free beer on Lakefront and a $5 donation or more will get you a spin of JR’s prize wheel.

Lakefront Brewery Tour Guide, Chad Lehman, knows JR’s Pups-N-Stuff well.

“We have been fostering at JR’s for about 6 years,” says Lehman. “We got into it after we adopted one of our dogs from them 7 years ago. It’s incredibly rewarding to find the perfect fit for both the foster dog and the people looking to adopt. Many of these dogs have not had the best start in life and if we can turn that around, that’s the ultimate goal.”

Fuzzy Few Organization Presents the Fuzzy Few Festival With Beer Garden 2024 https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/08/10/fuzzy-few-organization-presents-the-fuzzy-few-festival-with-beer-garden-2024/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fuzzy-few-organization-presents-the-fuzzy-few-festival-with-beer-garden-2024 Sat, 10 Aug 2024 14:15:13 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15419

Fuzzy Few Festival 2024

Fuzzy Few Organization Presents the Fuzzy Few Festival With Beer Garden 2024

Fuzzy Few Festival

Previously known as the Fuzzy Few Carnival, this year the Fuzzy Few Organization is renaming and rebranding it as a Festival rather than a carnival.

For the past 55 years it has been the Fuzzy Few Carnival and has happened near or around the middle of August every year. With the Hummelstown Fireman’s Carnival happening in the end of June each year.

Unfortunately, as with most things – COVID – 19 changed a lot of the way events, activities, and things like this work. And with all of that it became harder and harder for the Fuzzy Few Organization (FFO) to be able to secure carnival groups to come help assist their carnival each year. Last year they were unable to have rides and other vendors due to this, but they did procure some inflatable activities and playground stuff for children.

(See last year’s article: Fuzzy Few Organization Presents the Fuzzy Few Festival With Beer Garden 2023.)

So pivoting for 2023 they announced the Fuzzy Few Festival (instead of the Fuzzy Few Carnival).

Now in its second year as the Fuzzy Few Festival, it returns for 2024 from August 12th through August 17th.

It will run from August 12th through August 17th 2024 at Schaffner Park (Boro Park).

Beer Garden

The Beer Garden has moved from the caged in basketball courts to right directly in front of the band stage – and as a bonus – they will allow guests to purchase the alcohol and move about the festival rather than having to stay within the basketball court like last year.

Known beer will be Troegs Independent Brewing (who has graciously donated eight [8] cases of beer to the event) – Perpetual IPA, Sunshine Pilsner, and Graffiti Highway IPA – as well as Blue Moon, Coors Light, and Miller Lite. (More could be announced.) Also on top of beer there is mixed drink, wine, cocktails, and select other beverages.

Pentagon

The band Pentagon are hosting their “farewell tour” and one of their final gigs will be the closing day of the Fuzzy Few Festival 2024. This might be your last chance to catch them in action, so be sure to come out Saturday August 17th. The festival runs until 11:30 PM.

Amy and the Alzheimer’s Association

Make sure you stop out to visit Amy at her Alzheimer’s Assocciation stand. (I’ll also be helping out a few nights after work). Raising awareness for Alzheimer’s and for the Alzheimer’s Association.

She will have a stand at the Festival, so you can stop in, talk with her (or us) and hang out, and get information, fliers, pamphlets and information about Alzheimer’s, the Alzheimer’s Association, and their work raising awareness, looking for a cure, charitable work, as well as the upcoming End ALZ Walks.

Band Lineup

The bands lined up for the First Inaugural Fuzzy Few Festival are:

  • Monday (August 12th) – Honey Pump
  • Tuesday (August 13th) – Smooth Like Clyde

History of Fuzzy Few Organization

The founding of the Organization, know as the Fuzzy Few, came about during Hummelstown’s 200th Anniversary. It was formed as a Bearded Brothers Club to participate in that celebration. After playing a very active role during the time of fun and merriment, the men in the club decided to apply for an official charter and operate as a non-profit organization in the community of Hummelstown.

The organization’s official emblem was registered and approved on December 29th, 1963. The emblem also indicates the clubs desire to promote goodwill and fellowship not only within the organization but also throughout the community and surrounding areas.

The goal of the organization since its founding has been to establish and support community and youth related programs.

Book Review: Knife (Salman Rushdie) https://thebeerthrillers.com/2024/07/18/book-review-knife-salman-rushdie/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=book-review-knife-salman-rushdie Thu, 18 Jul 2024 17:50:23 +0000 https://thebeerthrillers.com/?p=15796 Book Review: Knife by Salman Rushdie

Salman Rushdie’s “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder” is a poignant and introspective memoir that offers a raw, unflinching account of the author’s near-fatal stabbing in August 2022. This work serves as both a testament to Rushdie’s resilience and a profound exploration of the aftermath of violence, weaving together personal narrative, philosophical musings, and literary craftsmanship.

Reading Knife by Salman Rushdie on my work break. (Via our Instagram – The Beer Thrillers)

Narrative Structure and Style

Rushdie employs a chronological approach to recount the events surrounding the attack and his subsequent recovery. The opening chapter, with its chilling precision, stands out as some of the most compelling prose in Rushdie’s oeuvre. His description of the assailant as “a sort of time traveler, a murderous ghost from the past” encapsulates the surreal nature of the incident and its connection to the long-standing fatwa against him. The author’s trademark wit and sardonic humor are evident throughout the text, even in the face of grave circumstances. Rushdie’s decision to refer to his attacker simply as “the A” (for Assassin, Assailant, or Asinine) demonstrates his refusal to grant his would-be killer undue significance while simultaneously showcasing his linguistic playfulness.

Thematic Exploration

Violence and Its Aftermath

At its core, “Knife” is an examination of the physical and psychological repercussions of violence. Rushdie’s detailed account of his injuries and recovery process serves not only as a personal narrative but also as a universal exploration of trauma. His observation that “in the presence of serious injuries, your body’s privacy ceases to exist” speaks to the vulnerability and loss of autonomy experienced by victims of violence.

Identity and Resilience

The memoir grapples with questions of identity in the face of life-altering events. Rushdie’s struggle to reconcile his pre-attack self with his post-attack reality is palpable throughout the text. His determination to “reclaim his life” and his defiant stance of living “like a free man” underscore themes of resilience and the indomitable human spirit.

The Role of Art in Healing

Rushdie’s decision to “answer violence with art” is a central theme of the book. The act of writing itself becomes a form of therapy and reclamation, allowing the author to process his trauma and assert control over his narrative. This aspect of the memoir reinforces the power of literature as a tool for healing and understanding.

Literary Techniques and Devices

One of the most intriguing aspects of “Knife” is Rushdie’s use of imagined conversations with his attacker. While these sections have been criticized by some as the least potent part of the book, they serve an important function in exploring the author’s need for understanding and closure. These fictional dialogues allow Rushdie to confront questions of motivation and ideology that would otherwise remain unanswered. The author’s use of metaphor is particularly striking, especially in his treatment of the titular knife. By describing the knife as “morally neutral in itself,” Rushdie invites readers to consider broader questions about the nature of violence and human agency.

Critical Analysis

While “Knife” is undoubtedly a powerful and moving account, it is not without its flaws. The book’s structure can feel somewhat disjointed at times, with Rushdie seeming to struggle with the balance between personal narrative and broader philosophical musings. Additionally, the imagined conversations with the attacker, while conceptually interesting, occasionally veer into territory that feels forced or contrived. However, these minor shortcomings are overshadowed by the memoir’s overall impact. Rushdie’s ability to transform a deeply personal trauma into a work of literature that speaks to universal themes of resilience, freedom, and the power of art is truly remarkable.

Conclusion

“Knife” stands as a significant addition to Rushdie’s body of work, offering readers a glimpse into the mind of one of contemporary literature’s most influential figures as he grapples with mortality and the aftermath of violence. More than just a personal account, this memoir serves as a meditation on the enduring conflict between forces of fanaticism and those of artistic freedom. In confronting his own brush with death, Rushdie has created a work that reaffirms the vital importance of literature in our understanding of the human experience.

Knife by Salman Rushdie

Knife by Salman Rushdie (cover via GoodReads)

The back of the book blurb:

From internationally renowned writer and Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie, a searing, deeply personal account of enduring—and surviving—an attempt on his life thirty years after the fatwa that was ordered against him

On the morning of August 12, 2022, Salman Rushdie was standing onstage at the Chautauqua Institution, preparing to give a lecture on the importance of keeping writers safe from harm, when a man in black—black clothes, black mask—rushed down the aisle toward him, wielding a knife. His first thought: So it’s you. Here you are.

What followed was a horrific act of violence that shook the literary world and beyond. Now, for the first time, and in unforgettable detail, Rushdie relives the traumatic events of that day and its aftermath, as well as his journey toward physical recovery and the healing that was made possible by the love and support of his wife, Eliza, his family, his army of doctors and physical therapists, and his community of readers worldwide.

Knife is Rushdie at the peak of his powers, writing with urgency, with gravity, with unflinching honesty. It is also a deeply moving reminder of literature’s capacity to make sense of the unthinkable, an intimate and life-affirming meditation on life, loss, love, art—and finding the strength to stand up again.

The Attack on August 12, 2022

On August 12, 2022, at approximately 10:47 a.m. EDT, Salman Rushdie was about to deliver a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York when tragedy struck. As Rushdie prepared to speak about the United States as a safe haven for exiled writers, an assailant rushed the stage and launched a vicious attack.

The attacker, later identified as 24-year-old Hadi Matar from Fairview, New Jersey, stabbed Rushdie multiple times. The assault was brutal and persistent, with Matar continuing his attack even as several people attempted to restrain him. In total, Rushdie suffered fifteen stab wounds to various parts of his body, including his face, neck, abdomen, chest, and right eye.

Henry Reese, the co-founder of City of Asylum who was on stage to interview Rushdie, was also injured in the attack, sustaining a shallow knife wound and bruising near his right eye. The swift response of a New York state trooper and a sheriff’s deputy present at the event led to Matar’s immediate arrest.

The aftermath of the attack was dire. Rushdie was quickly airlifted to UPMC Hamot, a hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he underwent emergency surgery. Initially, his condition was critical, with Rushdie on a ventilator and facing potential loss of an eye, liver damage, and severed nerves in one arm. Despite the severity of his injuries, Rushdie’s resilience shone through. By August 13, he had been taken off the ventilator and was able to speak. However, the attack left lasting impacts, including the loss of sight in his right eye and limited use of his left hand.

This horrific incident brought renewed attention to the longstanding threats against Rushdie, which began with the 1989 fatwa issued by Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini following the publication of “The Satanic Verses”. The attack, occurring decades after the initial threats, served as a stark reminder of the enduring nature of extremist ideologies and the ongoing risks faced by writers who challenge religious and political norms.

Legacy of Salman Rushdie

Salman Rushdie in 2024 (via The Atlantic)

Salman Rushdie’s legacy is multifaceted, encompassing his literary achievements, his influence on other writers, and his role as a champion of free speech. His impact on literature and society extends far beyond his own works, shaping the landscape of contemporary fiction and public discourse.

Literary Legacy

Rushdie’s contribution to literature is profound and enduring. His novels, particularly “Midnight’s Children,” have redefined the boundaries of magical realism and postcolonial literature. The Booker Prize committee recognized the lasting importance of his work as early as 1981, describing “Midnight’s Children” as “a work of extraordinary ambition and abundance” and “of amazing imaginative fertility as well as of political courage”.

Rushdie’s unique style, blending magical realism with historical fiction, has influenced a generation of writers. His exploration of themes such as migration, cultural hybridity, and the connections between Eastern and Western worlds has opened new avenues for literary expression.
Authors like Hanif Kureishi and Zadie Smith have been influenced by Rushdie’s approach to tackling cultural identity and the immigrant experience. (In turn, Salman Rushdie himself was inspired by writers as diverse as Franz Kafka, Anton Chekhov, Italo Calvino, Karel Capek, Ursula K. Le Guin, Jorge Louis Borges, James Joyce, Joseph Conrad, P. G. Wodehouse, and many more.)
Salman Rushdie’s influence on contemporary writers is both profound and far-reaching. His willingness to tackle controversial themes, such as cultural identity, migration, and the intersections of religion and politics, has inspired a new generation of authors to explore these complex topics in their own work. Writers like Hanif Kureishi and Zadie Smith have drawn from Rushdie’s bold narrative style and thematic focus, incorporating similar explorations of cultural hybridity and the immigrant experience into their novels.
Rushdie’s blending of magical realism with historical and political commentary has also left a lasting mark on global literature. His innovative storytelling techniques, seen in works like Midnight’s Children and The Satanic Verses, have encouraged younger writers to experiment with form and genre. For instance, Zadie Smith’s White Teeth reflects Rushdie’s influence in its intricate exploration of multiculturalism and identity within a modern context. Moreover, his advocacy for free speech and artistic freedom has emboldened many authors to challenge societal norms through their writing, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire literary innovation.

Champion of Free Speech

Perhaps Rushdie’s most significant legacy lies in his unwavering commitment to free speech and artistic freedom. The controversy surrounding “The Satanic Verses” and the subsequent fatwa against him thrust Rushdie into the role of a symbol for freedom of expression. His refusal to be silenced in the face of threats and persecution has inspired writers and artists worldwide to tackle controversial themes and push the boundaries of acceptable discourse.

Cultural Impact

Rushdie’s influence extends beyond the literary world. He has played a crucial role in changing perceptions of South Asian writers and culture in the West. As one of the first desi authors to achieve widespread recognition in Europe and North America, Rushdie helped pave the way for greater representation and understanding of South Asian perspectives in global literature.

Academic and Critical Recognition

Rushdie’s work has become a staple in academic studies of postcolonial literature. Scholars have extensively analyzed his exploration of postcolonial identity and cultural hybridity, recognizing the profound insights his novels offer into the dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity in a globalized world.

Ongoing Relevance

Even in his later works, Rushdie continues to address contemporary issues. His novel “Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights” (2015) explores themes of transnationalism and cosmopolitanism, demonstrating his ability to evolve and remain relevant in changing times. Rushdie’s perspective on the role of literature in society remains influential, with his assertion that the job of the modern writer is “to try and open up the universe to show people all of its possibilities”.

In conclusion, Salman Rushdie’s legacy is that of a literary pioneer, a cultural bridge-builder, and a tireless advocate for freedom of expression. His work has not only entertained and challenged readers but has also shaped the course of contemporary literature and public discourse on issues of identity, culture, and artistic freedom.

The Benefit for CJ Facebook Event

Quick shout out links:

CJ Corbin

On June 22 CJ Corbin was in a bad accident.  The other driver ran a red light and hit CJ while driving his motorcycle.  The other driver is only getting charged with a traffic violation but that is another story for another time.  CJ has lost part of a leg because of this accident.

My next question is how can I help?  No matter what the situation I think to myself; what am I capable of doing to change this terrible outcome?  I feel this is where my passion for working for a nonprofit comes from. One thing that has me obsessed with the brewery community is the unwavering support your local breweries support the community.

It reminded me of all the support and help for the Hemauer family – Helping the Hemauer Family.

(See our Instagram from the other day for pictures of when we were at YAH Brew to drop off the raffle basket on Thursday night.)

Benefit for CJ

The Callahan Kolsch from YAH Brew (100% of proceeds went to CJ)

This is a brewery community.  It was no surprise that YAH Brew was going to be holding a fundraiser for CJ, also part of their kitchen staff.  The event was held on Sunday June 30th from 3 pm – 8 PM.

While attending the event we overheard friends of CJ’s worrying about how he is handling this.  What I can gather; from looking around in the short time I was at the brewery; is that CJ has a very large community rallying behind him.

According to the YAH Brew Facebook page Performance Foodservice donated over 20 lbs of brisket, rolls slaw and BBQ Sauce.  100% of the sales of that food would go to CJ.  The food was sold out by the time we got there at 6:20 PM.

The basket Grandma SueAnn made for the silent auction.

There was a monumental feeling of support in the air as we enjoyed our beers.  Our own Grandma SueAnn put together a silent auction basket to help out the cause.  They had several silent auction items all from other local breweries and businesses.

There is a Go Fund Me Page to help with CJ’s care – GoFundMe: Support for CJames’ Recovery (PennLive’s Article about CJ’s Crash). The goal has been increased on the page since they have surpassed the goal and as of the time of writing this article is over $13k.

Baskets for the silent auction at YAH Brew for the Benefit CJ event.

We got a strong feeling that this may be the first of other fundraisers for CJ.  If it involves the love I felt for the community this evening, count us in!

Wrap Up

Editor Ben notes: After the event ended, and the clean up began, we got to talking with Justin and Aimee about CJ, the event, how their Mount Joy location is doing, how their all doing with all the stresses and headaches and everything going on, as well as Hummelstown happenings, and so much more. With just ball park numbers, and not getting the exact specifics and everything, but from the various forms of donations tonight – food purchases, straight up cash donations, the silent auction purchases, tips to the guest bartenders, as well as the sales of The Callahan Kolsch; they raised roughly over 7,000$ today for CJ. As well as whatever was also donated via his GoFundMe page which there was QR codes for at the brewery.

All in all, the event was a complete and total success. Justin did also mention that The 1762 Tavern at The Warwick Hotel will likely be doing a fundraising event in the near future for CJ as well, with 20% of all sales during that event (or that day) will be going towards CJ’s medical bills.

The outpouring of support from the community has been incredible, with baskets for the silent auctions coming in from friends and family, as well as breweries such as Troegs Independent Brewing, Lancaster Brewing Company, BierHall Brewery, and more.

Beers We Enjoyed

We both of course immediately got The Callahan Kolsch (20 oz) to start off the evening. While they wrapped up the silent auction, I walked down to Jersey Mike’s to grab a cheesesteak for us to enjoy while having the beers, and then once I got back, we got another round of beers. Amy got a second Kolsch, while I got the Go, Ninja, Go! collab that YAH Brew did with Country Club Brewing and Weathered Souls Brewing (the stout I wanted to try at their Mount Joy soft opening but was unable to).

Beerathon: 5K and Beerfest is Coming to Philly

Beerathon: 5K and Beerfest Coming to Philly

The first ever Beerathon 5K + Beer Fest – a one of a kind event focused on combining exercise and celebrating Pennsylvania based beer companies and beyond, is coming to Philly. Beerathon will take place Saturday, May 11 at The Navy Yard  in Philadelphia, PA and be composed of two parts: A 5k timed run and beer fest to follow.

Born out of training injuries that sidelined a group of friends from competing in the New York City marathon, they pivoted to something they were also good at: drinking beers. So, in 2011, in New York City, the Beerathon was born. A 26 bar, 26 beer adventure that captured the imaginations of beer lovers around the world. Now, over a decade of Beerathons around the country later, the newest challenge is born: Beers, Run, Ridiculous Fun, the Beerathon 5K + Beer Fest.

Beerathon kicks off with a totally doable 5K run (or walk) where participants will get that Runner’s High and earn a beer for each mile completed. After the race, patrons are invited to a ridiculously fun beer fest with an incredible list of curated beers, food trucks, live DJ and more on Marine Parade Grounds @ The Navy Yard.

Like beer more than running? Not ready to run or an old sports injury slowing you down? The Beerathon does not require any physical activity or participation in the 5K. Beer Fest Admission tickets are also available, separately. Choose your adventure: Beer Fest, 5K, or both! Beerathon is for everyone.
